Zamfara NSCDC arrests POS operator hired by bandits

A POS operator simply identified as Mustapha has been arrested by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Zamfara State for allegedly making financial transactions on behalf of bandits.

Commandant of the corps in the state, Muhammad Bello Muazu, told newsmen that Mustapha was arrested in Birnin Tsaba community in Zurmi LGA of the state.

Muazu added that two POS machines were seized from him by his team on a stop-and-search mission while being brought from Abuja to Zamfara.

The commandant said;

“The suspect confessed that the machines were bought for him by a bandits’ leader and he is only transacting business with people he knows (the bandits).

“During interrogation, the suspect told us that they put calls to him from the forest and instruct him to collect money on their behalf and keep the money with him.

“Then if they want to buy some items such as drugs, fuel and foodstuffs they send somebody directly to him to collect the money to buy whatever they want for them.

“Or sometimes they instruct the POS operator himself to use the money available to buy whatever they want for them. The transactions are usually shrouded in secrecy and are done with only known persons as confessed by Mustapha.

“This tells you that this person is particularly hired or sponsored to be doing the POS transactions for them.

“When the bandits got the information about the arrest of the suspect (their agent) and seizure of the POS machines, they threatened to kill three persons they had abducted from the community earlier if the POS machines are not released to them or if in particular, the suspect is not freed.

“The people they threatened to kill are the village head of Birnin Tsaba and two party chairmen. The suspect had been operating two POS machines and we have asked banks to close the suspect’s accounts.

“We have advised the state government to temporarily suspend the operations of the POS, especially in rural communities.

“From our observation, this will affect the way the bandits are using rural POS operators to make transactions. The rural POS operators are closer to the armed criminals.”

Lab scientists decry medical tourism by Nigerians, politicians

The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, AMLSN, has frowned at the thriving tendencies of medical tourism by Nigerians especially the political class over the decades.

AMLSN in a communique’ issued at the end of its 206th National Executive Council (NEC), Meeting weekend in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital, noted that Nigeria would become a tourism destination if the country invest the huge amount of money spent on medical tourism in its health sector.

According to the communique’ which was signed by the National President, Prof. James Damen, National Secretary, Prof. Musa Muhibi, and National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olusoji Billyrose, the association observed that the issue of brain drain in the country’s health sector has escalated to an alarming proportion.

It identified the reasons for the human capital flight to include poor leadership of the health sector, corruption, poor welfare package/renumeration and toxic work environment, and reiterated call on government to urgently look into the concerns in order to remedy the unfortunate situation.

The communique’ reads in part;

“For the umpteenth time, NEC frowns at thriving tendencies of medical tourism by Nigerians, especially the political class. It has been estimated that Nigeria spends about N664bn yearly on medical tourism.

“This is indeed a huge loss of foreign exchange and a drain on the country’s foreign reserve.

“These amounts, when invested in the Nigeria health sector, will not only make it competitive with world hospitals, but will make Nigeria a health tourism destination since the so-called world-class hospitals in developed countries are manned by Nigerian health professionals.

“Consequently, we call on the Federal Government through the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Bank of Industry, to provide financial support through special intervention funds for private sector investment for healthcare delivery, and especially building of mega and High-tech medical laboratories that can be globally competitive both in technology and test spectrum.

“NEC observed with sadness the continuous human capital flight that has escalated to an alarming proportion. In 2022 alone the nation lost about 906 medical laboratory scientists to human capital flight.

AMLSN, even regretted that the paltry budgetary allocation for the health sector spanning about two decades now has continued to fall short of recommendations of the African Union declaration Abuja in 2001 that member nation’s should commit not less than 15per cent of their annual budget to the health sector.

The association which called on incoming government to change the status quo, however, observed, “So far we have perused through the health agenda of manifestoes of the leading candidates in the elections and we are concerned that some are lacking in depth, scope and strategy.

“We hereby call on the candidates to reassess the situation on ground and enrich their Healthcare agenda for the nation”

Akeredolu suspends Ondo Polytechnic governing council chairman

The Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has suspended the Chairman, Governing Council of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Mr. Banji Alabi, following the report of the Visitation Panel to the institution.

The governor announced the suspension while receiving the report of the seven-member panel to the polytechnic, on Thursday.

It was gathered that Alabi allegedly refused to honour the invitation of the panel on several occasions.

Receiving the report at the Governor’s Office, Alagbaka, Akure, Akeredolu who appreciated all members of the panel for their labour, with a promise to look into the report, declared, “the chairman stands suspended until I hear from him.

Governor Akeredolu, who expressed worry over what he called the downward slide being observed in the polytechnic, said the report would guide the government on what to do.

He said;

“Coincidentally, I am from Owo, I was inundated with several complaints here and there. A number of them I am not able to solve. I asked questions and got answers that probably were not correct, I can’t understand. I got information that several people have been recruited and when I ask, they will say no. Then why are your wages going up? Why can’t you pay?

“We have intervened on one or two occasions and we gave money with specific instruction to pay salaries. At the end of the day, you cannot still complete salary payment. I’m sure your report will contain this. Management, yes, there might be some problems with human and material resources but as I always say when they come and meet me, I know from verifiable facts that the Rector has attracted enormous funding to that place either through TETFUND or others, because of his connection. You can’t take that away from him.”

The governor also stated that it had become more desirable to turn the polytechnic into a university, declaring that “there is no going back,” stressing that the polytechnic had all it takes in terms of facilities to become a university.

Submitting the panel report to the governor, the Chairman, Professor Olabode Koriko, applauded Akeredolu for releasing about N1.6bn bailout to the polytechnic, adding that the commitment of the governor to reposition the polytechnic and restore its lost glory was commendable.

“Rufus Giwa Polytechnic until recently remains a model institution in the South-West over the years, however, poor management of human and material resources appears to have eroded the gains of the past and turned the once famous citadel of learning that has produced very successful men and women in the society to a shadow of itself.

“Your decision to set up the Visitation Panel at this auspicious moment could therefore not have come at a better time and is no doubt altruistic. It is expected that at the end, your desire to emplace probity and accountability in the management of this great citadel of learning would be realised,” he stated.
