Police witness testifies in Dr Olaleye’s child defilement case

An Investigative Police Officer (IPO) Inspector Abe Leonard on Thursday testified before an Ikeja Sexual offences and Domestic Violence Court against Dr. Olufemi Olaleye in the case of alleged defilement of his 16-year-old wife’s niece.

Mr Olaleye, the Medical Director of Cancer Care Foundation, is facing a two-count charge of defilement and sexual assault by penetration.

He, however, pleaded not guilty.Mr Leonard, the sixth prosecution witness, told the court he served at Anthony Police Station while being led in evidence by the state counsel, Babajide Boye.

The witness told the court that the victim was 17 years old at the time the case wasn’t reported by the wife of the defendant, Aderemi Olaleye.

He said the case was reported at the station on November 29, 2021, about 11:00 p.m. He said a case of indecent treatment of a child was reported and the DPP of the station, DSP Patricia Amadi deployed a team of policemen to the house of the defendant.

“About two hours later, the defendant and his lawyer came into the station.“The DPP called both parties to the office where she interviewed them and she also sent for a statement form which was brought in by Sgt. Modupe Phillips,” he said.

The witness further informed the court that he transferred the case to the Gender Unit in Ikeja after he discovered that it was a case of indecent treatment of a child and defilement.

He added that the survivor told him that the defendant allegedly engaged her in sexual activities sometimes in 2019.

“I visited the scene of the incident but I did not get access to the house. I advised the parties to go to the gender unit in Ikeja because the Anthony Division has less power to investigate such cases.

“The survivor told me that the defendant had sex with her sometime in 2019 but the defendant denied it, adding that the survivor is like a daughter to him.

“However, the wife of the defendant, told me that the survivor confessed to her before coming to the station. The statements of the witness and statement of the defendant’s wife were admitted into evidence.

While under cross-examination by the defence counsel, Babatunde Ogala (SAN), the witness confined to the court that the complainant did not submit the survivor for medical examination while at Anthony Police Station but he was aware that a medical examination was conducted at the gender section.

The witness added that he could not gain access to the house because the defendant’s wife was not at home and that the defendant was with them at the station.

“Mrs Olaleye was not at home to give access to the house and her husband was with us at the station.

“I can not remember the date I visited the house and on the second occasion I tried to go, I put a call to her but her number was not going through,” he said.

He maintained that the case was transferred to gender section because the station (Anthony) had limited power to investigate the case.

A medical doctor, Oyebimpe Akinbunmi, had on January 4 told the court how the defendant allegedly defiled the survivor.

The agency also reports that the survivor had on December 21, 2021, reportedly testified against the defendant in a closed hearing which was in line with the 1999 Constitution and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act as amended.

The wife of the defendant, Mrs Aderemi Fagbemi-Olaleye, on December 19, told the court that her husband was diagnosed with sex addiction.

Justice Ramon Oshodi adjourned the case until Feb.10 for continuation of trial.

Gunmen have abducted Joshua Ahmadu, the district Head of Chawai in Kauru Local Government of Kaduna State.

Abel Adamu, president of Chawai Development Association, CDA, confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday, January 25, 2023.

Mr Adamu, in the statement signed by Raphael Joshua, Public Relations Officer of CDA, said that the traditional ruler was kidnapped on Tuesday night, January 24, by unknown gunmen who invaded his house at Zambina.

The statement urged youths of the chiefdom to always take communal security seriously so as to avert such breaches.

Nigerian man sentenced to 2 years house arrest in Canada for being a fake immigration officer

A Provincial Court in Winnipeg, Canada has sentenced a Nigerian man to two years of house arrest for forging bank records and other documents to help would-be immigrants safely enter the country.

Chinenye Alozie, a 35-year-old father-of-four pleaded guilty to acting as an unauthorized immigration consultant and to misrepresenting or withholding facts in immigration applications, offenses under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

The court heard the crimes related to Alozie’s dealings with more than 60 foreigners, most of them students, between 2014 and 2019, Canada Today reports.

He caught the attention of the Canadian Border Services Agency in late 2018 after reports that he had advertised his services to overseas students online.

At a hearing on Tuesday, Jan. 24, QC Matthew Sinclair told Judge Stacy Cawley that Alozie is not a licensed immigration consultant or attorney.

“He is not authorized to represent persons with regard to their applications,” he said.

According to Sinclair, a look at Alozie’s bank records revealed deposits of $90,000 in 2016 and $120,000 in 2017 from people believed to be foreigners.

An investigation by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada found that 52 deposits came from people applying to Canada as temporary students, workers or visitors.

Records provided to Border Protection Agency showed that between 2014 and 2018, Alozie used his personal credit cards to pay the government fees of 61 immigration applicants.

A June 2019 search of Alozie’s home uncovered evidence that he helped 20 clients create false bank statements for their immigration applications and “helped invent fictional storylines or personal stories to increase the likelihood that (her) application is approved,” Sinclair said.

Five of Alozie’s clients were allowed into Canada for their fraudulent immigration applications, Sinclair said. Alozie was also ordered to pay $29,000 fine.

He also called on airport authorities and airline operators to make provisions for equipment, personnel and infrastructure that would guarantee a seamless travel experience for PLWDs.

“But when we cannot access airports seamlessly. It has become an issue of abuse, indiscrimination and inhumane treatment. We are here to sensitise aviation stakeholderson seamless access to airports.”

Mr Anyaele expressed gladness that stakeholders in Plateau had identified gaps and were willing to close them by putting in place the required equipment at airports for easy accessibility.

He commended the Plateau government for giving assurances to make the Yakubu Gowon Airport a ninth level airport which is obtainable in other countries.

Gwantong Isaac of the Civil Aviation Authority regretted that the airport in Plateau was not built with the PLWDs in mind.

Mr Isaac said the airport had no designated car parks, consumer desks for people with disabilities, special toilet facilities, flight display systems and others, to ease their movement.

Excessive fasting can damage kidney – NAFDAC warns

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians against excessive fasting, stating it can destroy the kidney.

The Director-General of the NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, stated this in Abuja during a briefing on Monday, Jan. 23.

She urged Nigerians to fast with common sense or pay with their kidneys. She also urged Nigerians to desist from patronising hawkers and street-corner sellers of medicines.

Adeyeye said:

“Kidney failure, liver damage, others, I don’t know how many have died in Nigeria due to substandard medicines and unwholesome foods.

“However, we are a very religious country, Muslims and Christians, we fast a lot, and it is part of the kidney problem. Because your body has to have homeostasis balance, meaning the water level in your body must be enough to make your organs to function. Some people will fast for 10, 20 days, without drinking a lot of water. The kidney is being punished.

“Now, if you put chemicals in it, it triples in an exponential manner, with damage to the kidneys. This is because the kidney does not have enough water to dilute and filter.

“I fast but I fast with common sense. We have to fast with common sense, if not, we will pay it with our kidneys. Also, do not buy medicines from hawkers and corner stores. But medicines from pharmacies.”

We’re unaware of alleged deadly China flu – Ministry of Health says

The Ministry of Health says it is unaware of the alleged deadly flu that is reportedly spreading in China and some other countries, and had claimed the lives of some persons including Nigerians.

There have been reports passed around on social media that the deadly flu is sweeping across China and that the flu has killed some persons including Nigerians.

However, while speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, January 23, the Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, said neither the World Health Organisation (WHO) nor the US Centre for Disease Control (US-CDC) has contacted the Federal Ministry of Health regarding the reported deadly flu spreading in China.

He said the Federal government cannot authenticate the veracity of the claims surrounding alleged presence of the deadly flu.

He added that neither Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has contacted the Federal Ministry of Health on any disease outbreak as against the practice of formal notification of any of such public health issue from China.

In his words;

“We can’t verify the case of the reported deadly flu now. However, we are on the lookout for anything of public health concern because it’s our duty to protect the health of our people.

However, we have referred the matter to Director General of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and Port Health Services so they can be at alert.Sincerely speaking, the messages on social media about the deadly flu in China is odd and strange to us.

The ideal situation is that whenever there’s such an outbreak of any flu or deadly disease anywhere, we hear it first from WHO.

But up till now, WHO has not contacted us with any information about the flu neither has the Chinese embassy communicated to us on that matter.

Usually, the Chinese embassy in Nigeria will send an official to communicate to us in case of any such thing but that has not been done.

So, we are wondering about the authenticity of the report going around in the social and some conventional media. However, we are yet to get any confirmation from the right organisations.

Evidently, this is the season where people generate stories, true or false, and throw it into the media space to cause unnecessary reactions, positive or negative, among the people.

Nevertheless, we are monitoring the situation and we take seriously, everything we hear and see.

But in summary, any outbreak of such would be diagnosed by WHO and they would send necessary advisory and other relevant information regarding such outbreak. So, we should disregard this report and take it with a big ‘pinch of salt”

Pete Davidson removes tattoos dedicated to Kim Kardashian after split

Pete Davidson has covered up the tattoo he dedicated to his ex-girlfriend, Kim Kardashian, 5 months after their split.

This was discovered after he went shirtless during a vacation in Hawaii with rumored girlfriend Chase Sui Wonders.

Recall that 29-year-old Pete famously inked his body in tribute to his then-girlfriend, getting several tattoos that referenced Kardashian and even her kids, but the ink was noticeably absent during his romp in the ocean.

In October 2022, the star was photographed with a bandage above his left collarbone where his “My girl is a lawyer” tattoo was, causing speculation that he’d had laser treatments to remove the ink, and the photographs in Hawaii confirm the removal, with the Kardashian tribute nowhere to be seen.

On the other side of his clavicle, the “Jasmine and Aladdin” design he had to commemorate their first kiss during a skit on “SNL” is also gone.

The most extreme dedication to Kardashian was the word “Kim,” which the former “Saturday Night Live” star had branded on his chest, but that has also disappeared, notwithstanding a faint scar visible in the middle of his dog tattoo.

Last spring, Kardashian revealed to Ellen DeGeneres that he got the brand because of its permanent nature, saying Davidson told her, “I don’t want to be able to get rid of it or to cover it up, and I just wanted it there as a scar on me.”

Along with the brand, the funnyman’s “KNSCP” neck tattoo bearing the initials of Kardashian’s kids has also bit the dust, a decision Kim’s ex husband, Kanye West is likely pleased to hear about.

NAFDAC advices against taking weight loss capsule

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cautioned Nigerians against the use of the drug — Weight Rapid Loss Capsule.

This was contained in an alert with No. 049/2022, signed by NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, issued to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday, Jan. 22, in Abuja.

Adeyeye stated that the drug has been found to have potential to cause cancer.

The NAFDAC boss added that result of laboratory analysis showed that the drug, manufactured by Ingi Oman, contain banned substance “phenolphthalein”, which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recognised as unsafe.

She added that the capsule, being marketed as “the most effective weight loss supplement” and sold through social media platforms like Instagram, also contain microbial growth above permissible limits.

She stated that “phenolphthalein has been found to be toxic to genes, as it can cause damage or mutations in the DNA.

Studies have also shown its potential carcinogenic risks.

“NAFDAC implores consumers to stop the purchase and use of the product.

“Members of the public in possession of the product should discontinue use or sale, and submit stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.”

Adeyeye encouraged healthcare professionals and consumers to report any adverse effect experienced with the use of the product to the nearest NAFDAC office. Consumers are also advised to report adverse effect via pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng or E-reporting platforms available at www.nafdac.gov.ng.

The director-general urged the public to also report any incident concerning the use of the drug via the Med-safety application, which can be downloaded on android and IOS stores.

Diphtheria death toll increases to 34

The NCDC blamed the rising cases of the vaccine-preventable disease on low vaccination coverage across the country.

The agency said;

“The fact that we are having a resurgence of diphtheria now suggests that there have been critical reductions in vaccination coverage among pockets of our population.

“This reduced level of population immunity has given rise to the cases that we are seeing.

“It is not a matter of diphtheria spreading from state to state, the bacteria that causes the disease is present everywhere in our environment.

“Any state where you find diphtheria now, you are likely to find that it will be associated with suboptimal vaccination coverage, either in general or in pockets of the population.”

Suspected cases of diphtheria in Kano have also risen from 25 to 100 in less than two weeks.

The disease is prevalent in Ungogo, Nassarawa, Bichi, Dala, Dawakin Kudu, Fagge, Gwale, Kano Municipal, Kumbotso, Rano, Dawakin Tofa and Gwarzo local government areas.
