Domestic worker arraigned for allegedly stealing former employer’s cheque book and withdrawing N2.5m

The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned one Victor Williams before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a bank cheque belonging to his former employer, Alhaji Adekunle Moshood.

Williams was accused of also forging Moshood’s signature on the cheque and withdrawing over N2m from the account. Williams was arraigned before Magistrate P. E. Nwaka on three counts of stealing and forgery on Thursday, April 20.

The police prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, told the court that the offence contravened and is punishable under Sections 411 and 287(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

The charge read in part,

“That you, Victor Williams, in February 2023 did unlawfully withdraw N500, 000 from the account of your ex-employer, Adekunle Moshood, in the Magodo area of the state over the counter and had subsequently transferred N2m into your account without the consent of the original owner of the account and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.”

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges read to him in English.

Following his plea, Nwaka granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

He then adjourned the case till May 9, 2023, for mention.

LASTMA finds accident victim carrying 100 used baby diapers

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has arrested a suspected ritualist who was in possession of 100 used baby diapers and a large sum of money in Lagos.

The suspect was involved in an accident that occured at Moshalashi Roundabout, in the Iyana-Ipaja area of Lagos on Monday morning, April 24.

One of the victims involved in the accident died on the way to the hospital.

The agency disclosed this in a statement signed by its Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq.

The statement added that the passenger found with used diapers has been handed over to the police for further investigations.

“One of the passengers inside the commercial tricycle involved in the accident was however caught with more than 100 pieces of used small children’s Diapers (Pampers) with a huge sum of money of different denominations and was immediately handed over to Policemen at the scene of the accident,” the statement said.

Further speaking on the accident, Adebayo said the accident involved two males and a female. It added that a preliminary investigation carried out revealed that over-speeding was the cause of the accident.

“Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority on Monday rescued three severely injured accident victims (two males and a female) at Moshalashi Round-About inward Iyana-Ipaja area of Lagos.

“LASTMA Akanji Wasiu (Bravo 16) who led the rescue operations confirmed that the accident involved three vehicles, a Mazda commercial bus (FKJ 88 XH), a Tricycle (Keke Napep KJA 369 QM) and a white Camry car (KJA 351 HG) on the main carriageway at Iyana-Ipaja area of Lagos.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of a white Camry car lost control due to overspeeding and hit a commercial tricycle from the rear while the tricycle went off balance and obstructed another up-coming fully loaded Mazda commercial bus going to Iyana-Ipaja.

“The rescued three accident victims were immediately rushed to different Hospitals by their relatives but, unfortunately, one of the rescued accident victims (male) reportedly died along the road to the hospital.

“The vehicles involved in the accident were immediately removed from the road to avoid impeding the free flow of traffic and were handed over to Policemen from Gowon Estate Divisional Police Headquarters for further investigations.”

Man arrested for allegedly killing and burying his friend in Enugu

A man identified as Agbo Onuabuchi aged 24, a native of Ebonyi State but resident at Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, has been arraigned and remanded in Enugu Custodial Centre, for allegedly strangling to death and burying his male friend, one Peter Ukekwe aged 44, in a shallow grave, at Amori community in Nkanu West Local Government Area, on April 1.

The suspect and the deceased, had on the said date, travelled from Ogidi, Anambra State, to the mentioned location to visit one Onyeka Edeh, a male native doctor. However, during the night hours, the duo left the host’s house for an unknown destination.

A search was conducted, but they were not found until the following morning, when the suspect was arrested at Obe community in the same LGA, by Police Operatives serving in Nkanu West Division of Enugu State Command, with the assistance of citizens, while he was attempting to escape back to Ogidi, Anambra State.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the state police command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, said the suspect confessed to the crime, stating that he strangled the victim to death and buried him in a shallow grave in the bush, where his remains were exhumed and deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Ndukwe said the case was, thereafter, transferred to the Homicide Section of the State CID Enugu, where an investigation into the case was consolidated, concluded and the suspect was arraigned and remanded accordingly for further hearing.

38-year-old Yobe lecturer and his wife die two days apart

A lecturer with the Biology Department at Umar Suleiman College of Education Gashua, Yobe State, Dr. Barde Luka Yelwa and his wife, Godiya, have died two days apart.

Dr. Yelwa,38, died on Thursday, April 20, 2023, after suffering from a heart attack in the hospital where he was treating his wife who was sick.

Two days after his death, precisely on Saturday, April 22, his wife also passed away.

The couple left two children behind, a 5-year-old girl and a 2-year-old boy.

Dr. Yelwa had acquired his Ph.D. two weeks ago.

The burial of late Dr. & Mrs Barde Luka Yelwa is rescheduled for Monday, April 24, 2023, and the final internment will take place at Dagare Village, 10 Km along Bauchi-Jos Road.

Meanwhile, friends, family members and colleagues have taken to social media to mourn the couple.

“We spoke just a few days ago after your Ph.D. accomplishment not knowing that that’s the last moment I will ever hear from you again,” Comrade Joeman Joseph, wrote.

Five killed in boat accident in Kano, six rescued

The Kano State Fire Service on Sunday April 23rd confirmed five persons dead while six others survived a boat mishap at Kanwa Dam in Madobi Local Government Area of the state.

The service Public Relations Officer, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, said that one Umar Faruk-Dalada, reported the incident and he also provided names of the victims.

“The incident occurred on April 22, at about 5:40pm,” he said.

“There are 11 persons on the boat, six were rescued alive, while five were rescued in an unconscious state.

“Names of those that lost their lives in the mishap are Abdulrazak Nabara, 40; Dalha Muktar-Atamma, 40; Mustapha Ibrahim, 45; Umar Isah, 35, and Umar Idris, 35.”

The PRO said the victims were from Fagge local government area of the state.

He added that an investigation into the accident had commenced and the findings would be made public upon completion.

Ex-MAN chairman urges incoming president to improve road infrastructure

Wale Adegbite, former chairman of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Ogun Chapter, has advised the incoming government to improve road infrastructure across the country.

Mr Adegbite gave the advice on Monday in Ota, Ogun.

He said improving road infrastructure would reduce the cost of transporting raw materials from the port to factories and from factories to consumers.

He appealed to the incoming administration to create a level playing field in accessing dollars bid by manufacturers through their banks to the Central Bank of Nigeria.

“There is the need for the new government to think toward this direction as this would help to assist manufacturers to facilitate the importation of their inputs into the country,” Mr Adegbite explained.

“In addition, they should grant incentive to manufacturers in the area of reduction in taxes levied on companies to cushion the effects of continuous rising inflation and the challenges of unstable power supply.”

The former MAN chairman also stressed the need for the government to make concerted efforts to close the IFEX rate to reflect true rates transactions are consummated.

Nine casualties recorded in Texas after-prom party shootings

An after-prom party in Texas erupted in gunfire early Sunday morning, leaving nine people shot and wounded.

According to the Jasper county sheriff’s office, about 250 people were estimated to have been present at the time of the shooting.

The county sheriff’s office confirmed the incident in a Facebook post stating that police deputies responded to a disturbance with shots fired on County Road 263 north of Jasper County shortly after midnight.

“Upon arrival, nine victims were found to have non-life-threatening injuries,” the statement said.

“The incident erupted at an after-prom party that was being held at the residence on County Road 263,” said the police. Most victims were transported to Jasper Memorial Hospital, and some were transferred to Christus St. Elizabeth for further treatment.”

According to the sheriff’s office, investigations are ongoing, and people of interest are being questioned. The statement said further information would be released when available. A second shooting within the city limits of Jasper, Texas occurred shortly after the first, the statement said.

There were no injuries in the second shooting, but a connection between the two incidents is being investigated due to a “common vehicle at both locations,” the police explained.

Jasper, a city of about 6,800 people, is located in the Deep East Texas subregion, about 40 miles west of the Texas-Louisiana state line.

Gunmen kill two in Plateau

Two persons have been killed by gunmen who invaded Kuru Station of Wereng Community, Riyom LGA, Plateau State, on Sunday evening, April 23.

Sources told The Nation that the militias invaded the community and started shooting sporadically, killing and wounding people, leading to cries for help.

Spokesman of Operation Safe Haven, (OPSH) in charge of Plateau , Bauchi and Kaduna States, Capt. James Oya confirmed the attack and added that they are on top of the situation.

He said the gunmen sporadically opened fire, while passing by and a bullet reportedly hit and killed a member of the community.

Nigerian football legend, Jay-Jay Okocha, has said he would have cost around €150m in today’s transfer market for clubs to secure his services.

The former PSG, Fenerbahçe, and Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder was commenting on the high fees clubs now pay to sign players.

In an interview with hurriyet, Okocha believed he would have cost around €150m going by the current transfer market.“Maybe 1 billion should have been paid for me,” he said.

“They paid £106m for their defensive midfielder Chelsea. To a player from Portugal. I would have cost around €150m. My assists, dribbles… World football started to pay a lot of money. Such would be the numbers of players of this quality.”

Man stabs his neighbour to death during an argument over parking on their street in Lagos estate

The police in Lagos state have arrested one Tolulopa Olowu, 41, for allegedly stabbing his neighbour, Pablo, to death at First Unity estate in Badore, Ajah in Lagos state on Saturday, April 22.

According to eyewitnesses, both men had a misunderstanding over the parking of vehicles on Gbadamosi street where they reside.

The misunderstanding degenerated into a fight and the suspect allegedly stabbed the deceased with a knife in his stomach, killing him on the spot.

The matter was reported at the Lagbansa police division and the suspect was immediately arrested and is currently in police detention.

Meanwhile, the corpse of the deceased has been deposited at the state morgue in Yaba.

President Buhari congratulates Navy boss at 57

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, on his 57th birthday.

In a statement by his media aide, Femi Adesina, on Saturday in Abuja, President Buhari rejoiced with family, friends and professional colleagues of the CNS, who has consistently posted distinctions in service to the nation.

Mr Buhari noted the profile of dedication and commitment of the CNS, who served in many capacities, including operations of NNS Ambe, NNS Damisa, NNS Ayam, and Nigeria’s Defence Attaché in Luanda, Angola.

Mr Gambo also acted as director, defence affairs in the office of the National Security Adviser.

The president extolled Mr Gambo for his steadfastness and selflessness in handling responsibilities, working for many years as director, simulation, naval doctrine and assessment centre, Lagos, and chief staff officer, at the Naval Training Command in Lagos,Mr Gambo was also director, procurement, defence space administration, before his appointment as the CNS.

President Buhari prayed for the well-being of the CNS and that of his family.

Busload of narcotics conveyed by security agents intercepted near Seme border

The Semé Command of Nigeria Customs Service said it intercepted 553 parcels of cannabis sativa worth N10 million, with four suspects arrested alongside.

The Customs Area Controller of Seme Customs, Comptroller Dera Nnadi, disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Semé.

Mr Nenadi said a Ford bus conveying the contraband was accosted by Customs officials on routine patrol along the Abidjan – Lagos Corridor on April 21.

“Upon search of the bus, seven large sacks containing 553 parcels of cannabis sativa, also known as Indian hemp, were discovered.

“Also, Four male occupants of the vehicle, comprising of two civilians and two members of one of the sister security agencies conveying the contraband items were arrested.

“The contraband narcotics worth about N10 million and the means of conveyance were taken to the station at Seme and detained, pending further investigations.

“Also taken to the station are the four male suspects who have volunteered statements.

“However, the two members of one of the sister security agencies were handed over to their agency for further necessary action.

“Preliminary investigation following the questioning of the suspects revealed that the Indian hemp was destined for Kaduna State,” he said.

Mr Nnadi condemned the nefarious means of earning a living by some members of the society, who had no consideration for the damaging effects of hard drugs which contributed to crime in the country.

He urged members of the society who traversed the Seme corridor to take advantage of the trade facilitation effort of the Nigeria Customs Service and engage in legitimate business.

The controller charged all stakeholders, officers and men of the command and sister border agencies along the corridor to remain vigilant and alert during the Salah celebration as smugglers might wish to take advantage of the public holidays to engage in their reprehensible acts.

He also directed them to ensure that all facilities and critical government infrastructure in the area of responsibilities were protected during this period as always.

Police nab five suspects for murder, stealing motorcycle in Bauchi

Police in Bauchi State have arrested five suspects over the alleged murder of a commercial motorcyclist in Kangere village in Bauchi Local Government Area.

This is contained in a statement issued by police spokesman in the state, SP Ahmed Wakil, and made available to reporters on Friday in Bauchi.

He stated that the five suspects allegedly committed criminal conspiracy, armed robbery and culpable homicide.

“Police received a report from one Ibrahim Umar of Kangere ward in Bauchi Local Government Area that his younger brother, one Muhammad Tukur, a commercial motorcyclist, was missing.

“On April 9, police received information from Maina-Maji Divisional Headquarters that a decomposing corpse was sighted at Shinge village forest in Alkaleri Local Government Area.

“The corpse was later identified to be that of the missing motorcyclist,’’ he stated.

Mr Wakil added that investigation revealed that Hashimu Adamu (22), of Badaqoshi village in Alkaleri Local Government Area of the state and Anas Muhammed (23) of Kangere village were the last passengers sighted with the motorcyclist.

He stated that detectives swung into action and arrested the aforesaid passengers for interrogation.

“During interrogation, the suspects confessed that they conspired between themselves to lure Tukur, the motorcyclist, to take them to Badaqoshi village Alkaleri Local Government Area.

“On reaching Shinge village, they stabbed the motorcyclist in his stomach, slaughtered him, abandoned the corpse and made away with his motorcycle,” he stated.

Mr Wakil added that exhibits recovered from the suspects included one motorcycle.

He stated also that the suspects would be charged in court at the completion of investigation.

14-year-old boy remanded in prison for defiling a 22-month-old baby in Oyo

A 14-year-old boy who allegedly defiled a 22-month-old baby has been remanded in Agodi Corrections facility, by a family court in Iyaganku, Oyo State.

The Prosecution Counsel, Insp Oluwakemi Arowosaye told the court that the boy resides with his parents at No 4, Salawu Street, Ibadan. He was accused of defiling the baby between March 31 and April 3.

Chief Magistrate P. O. Adetuyibi did not take the plea of the minor who was charged with defilement, for want in the jurisdiction.

Adetuyibi ordered the police to send the case to the Oyo State Directorate of Public Prosecution for legal advice.

The baby who is an orphan, has been taken by the Oyo State Child Welfare Department of the Ministry for Women Affairs. The judge adjourned the matter until July 20, for mention.

FG suspends Executive Secretary of Secondary Education Commission over alleged corruption

Prof. Benjamin Abakpa, the Executive Secretary of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), has been suspended over alleged misappropriation of fund.

His suspension was disclosed in a letter signed by Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Andrew David Adejo.

Prof. Abakpa has been directed to hand over the affairs of the office to the most senior director in the commission.

Spokesperson of the NSSEC, Fatima Bappare, who confirmed Abakpa’s suspension, said he was accused by the board members of administrative ineptitude, financial misappropriation and lack of synergy.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission (ICPC) has been invited to carry out a full investigation.

One shot dead as cult war rages in Rivers community

Another person has been shot dead as the recent clash among rival cult groups in the Diobu axis of Port Harcourt, River State continued on Wednesday, April 19, 2023.

The latest victim, popularly known as Asari, said to be in his twenties, was killed at about 7:55 pm along Ekwe/Ikwerre road, Mile 3 Diobu in the metropolis.

Eyewitnesses told Punch that said ‘Asari’ was standing with some persons when about five armed men came out from a car, rained bullets on him and zoomed off.

Sources in the area on Thursday said that the killing was said to be a supremacy war between two suspected factions of ‘D12 and Blackies’ cult gangs.

“They were recently engaged in a shoot out at Elechi beach in Mile 1 Diobu, Port Harcourt last Tuesday which claimed two lives. Now the war has spread to Mile 3,”

It was gathered that the shooting caused pandemonium, as passersby, road users and commuters scampered to safety while roadside traders within the scene hurriedly closed business for the day.

Speaking of the incident, a vigilante and Chief Security Officer of Nkpolu Oroworukwo in Mile 3 Diobu, Godstime Ihunwo, confirmed the identity of the victim.

He disclosed that persons believed to be members of the victim’s cult gang carted away his corpse before his team and policemen returned to the scene.

“At about 8 pm on Wednesday, we heard two gunshots at IKwerre road /Ekwe Street opposite Bishop Okoye Street and quickly rushed down to the scene,” he said.

“On reaching there, we saw a young man known and called ‘Asari’ laying dead and immediately we approached the Nkpolu Police station to tender our report.

“As we and the police were coming back to inspect the corpse, we got a report that some unknown gunmen drove with one Jetta and one Mazda and made away with the corpse.”

Mentally-challenged and homeless persons will be counted during census – NPC

Mentally-deranged and homeless people will reportedly be captured in the upcoming 2023 housing and population counting.

Prince Diran Iyantan, the NPC Federal Commissioner representing Ondo State disclosed this during a one-day capacity-building workshop for the 2023 population and housing census publicity committee, held in Akure on Wednesday, April 19.

Iyantan also assured Nigerians that the 2023 census would have at least 98 per cent success.

The State Director of NPC, Mr Oluyemi Falusi, on the other hand said digitisation of the census was in line with UN recommendations.

Falusi said the 2023 exercise would be the first digital census to be conducted by Nigeria, adding that it would facilitate faster processes, reduce error, track progress, ensure efficiency and ensure prompt publication of results, among others.

The NPC Director also said the training, recruiting, deployment, conduct, analysis and publication and other processes of the exercise are fully digitalised.

Falusi who further revealed that a 5-tier strategy being deployed for quality assurance, robust monitoring and evaluation system had been set up, concluded by stating that there would be a call centre and a situation room in the state to assess the daily progress of the exercise.

Keke driver killed after killing passenger over N50 in Bayelsa

A Keke Napep rider was lynched on Wednesday evening, April 19, shortly after he stabbed a young man named Douglas Joseph to death in Yenizue-Epie community of Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.

Douglas Joseph, 30, was a native of the community and a father of three. An eye witness who narrated the incident to DailyPost said:

“He said he was coming from Opolo community to Kpansia which was supposed to be N100, but the Keke rider insisted on collecting N150.

“As we were separating them, we saw the Keke rider bring out a dagger. We thought it was just to scare the youth. But he stabbed him on his lap and the young man fell to the ground. People prevented the Keke rider from running away. Unfortunately, his wounded victim died.

Following his death, the Keke rider was lynched by a mob that hit him with different objects.”

Reacting to the incident, the Bayelsa State Police Command, said it has deployed its Anti Riot Squad to restore normalcy at Kpansia and its environs over the unfortunate murder of a community youth by a tricycle rider.
