Osinbajo hailed fathers for making a remarkable impact on their children’s hearts. The former Vice President shared a picture of himself, his wife and his children and wrote,

“ From Lego pieces to college degrees, from first steps to life milestones, the journey of fatherhood has been an incredible one.

“To my fellow dads who’ve watched their little ones grow into remarkable adults, we’ve certainly come a long way. Here’s to us, and to the indelible imprints we’ve made on the hearts of our children.

“Today, while we revel in the joy of being fathers, I also want to extend my thoughts to those like me for whom this day might be tinged with longing.

Oyo government launches seasonal malaria chemoprevention campaign

The Oyo State government, in collaboration with Malaria Consortium, has launched the second phase of the Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention Campaign (SMC).

The campaign aims to achieve zero malaria prevalence in children under five in the state.

This is contained in a statement by the coordinating director, Gideon Alade, in Ibadan on Saturday.

He said the programme had been inaugurated in the Saki West Local Government Area of the state, targeting the prevention of malaria in children three to 59 months during the peak of the malaria season.

The permanent secretary, Oyo State Ministry of Health, Olusoji Adeyanju, reiterated Governor Seyi Makinde-led administration’s commitment to significantly reduce malaria cases among children under five and pregnant women.

Mr Adeyanju said it was essential for parents and guardians to present their children to health workers for drug administration.

He said the children within the age bracket were expected to take chemoprevention drugs monthly for five months.

“The second round of Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention distribution commenced on June 16, 2023, and will last till Monday, June 19, 2023.

“Distribution will be carried out monthly for four days each month. The drugs will be repeated every 28 days from June to October 2023.

“The present drugs SPAQ that will be distributed are free, and they do not cure malaria, but they prevent Malaria. It doesn’t work alone; we have to ensure that our children also sleep inside the net. Our environment should be clean without mosquito breeding sites.”

Mr Adeyanju appreciated the healthcare providers implementing the process and the Malaria Consortium Team for their support.

He said the mass distribution of malaria preventive drugs in the state had significantly reduced malaria cases in children between three to 59 months in Oyo state to 52 per cent from 72 per cent.

“The implementation commenced last year with an overall coverage of 102 per cent in which about 290,000 children were reached.”

He, however, sought the support of stakeholders in concerned communities to ensure success in the implementation.

Earlier, the wife of the chairman of Saki West Local Government, Funmi Akinola, expressed the readiness of the government to continually give the project all the necessary support.

The Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention will be administered in six local governments with the highest malaria burden, which includes Irepo, Olorunsogo and Ogbomoso North.

Suspected human trafficking syndicate busted in Abuja sting operation

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking In Persons (NAPTIP) has arrested two suspects in Abuja over alleged human trafficking.

The suspects are Awulonu Franklin and Joseph Ukaluo.

The agency’s director-general, Fatima Waziri-Azi, disclosed on Friday that officers of the agency busted the trafficking syndicate on June 9 at about 11:00 a.m.

She said the suspects are part of a syndicate that specialises in moving young female Nigerians between 16 to 26 to India for sexual exploitation and possible organ harvesting.

Ms Waziri-Azi said a sting operation was conducted after several days of undercover activity by operatives of the agency.

She said two female victims between 16 and 22 were rescued just as they were taken to the embassy.

The DG disclosed that the suspects forced the victims to swear an oath of allegiance in two shrines in Delta and Imo.

Ms Waziri-Azi stated that one of the victims also revealed how her very close friend, who had already been trafficked to India, was subjected to having sex with a minimum of 10 men daily.

She further said the agency was on the trail of the suspects’ accomplices in India.

The DG said that the two suspects, who claimed to be operating a mobile tour company at the time of their arrest, were found in possession of 28 passports.

She said some passports indicated that the victims were from Ghana, the Republic of Benin, Niger Republic and other countries.

Ms Waziri-Azi listed other materials found in the suspects’ possession as laptop, phones, which are under forensic examination, and other equipment related to the commission of the crime.

She disclosed that 10 letter-headed papers belonging to different companies were also recovered from the suspects.

The DG said the agency had placed the hotel where the victims were harboured on red alert as money was paid on behalf of the victims.

She said the agency had collaborated with many organisations and governments to launch a fresh angle to the fight against crime.

However, Mr Franklin, believed to be a prime suspect in the offence, denied involvement in trafficking, saying he only operates a travel and tour company through which he had assisted many people.

He said some passports recovered belonged to some of his clients travelling to study in some countries, including a University in India.

“My company is registered as ‘Endless travel and tour agent’, and I have been in this business since 2018,” he said.

Mr Ukaluo also said he knew Mr Franklin as a travel agent and nothing more than that, adding that they had both lived in the same neighbourhood for many years.

Daniel Atokolo, Director, Investigation and Monitoring Department, told journalists that an investigation is ongoing into the matter.
