Your voices have been heard, says NiDCOM to youths protesting police brutality

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), on Friday said that the voices of Nigerian youths protesting Police Brutality have been heard by government and results will be achieved soon.

Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, told the press during a courtesy visit by some members of Diaspora Youths Group to her office in Abuja. She told the group to give government the opportunity and chance to serve Nigerians. “I commend the Nigerian youths for demonstrating that we are a united nation, and that what binds us together is deeper than what separate us, the government is proud of you for standing with one voice to speak against what you call police brutality. “I think your call for the reformation of the police is a low hanging fruit but it can be a catalyst to institutional reform in Nigeria. “Also, a catalyst to demanding the best of ourselves, a catalyst to be on the part way of building the true Nigeria of our dreams and I believe so.

We have heard your cry and government will still continue to listen to you, this problem did not start with Muhammandu Buhari’s administration but I am very optimistic that it will be solved in this administration,’’ she said. Dabiri-Erewa also appealed to all Nigerian youths to remain non-violent while protesting by looking to the future to be better, “even the Inspector-General of Police said that nobody should be harassed or killed because you are protesting, but let your protest be violence free’’. She also urged the group to use the same zeal to fight corruption by saying we want great things to happen in our great country Nigeria. Speaking earlier, Ibrahim Magaji, the CEO of Digital Green Intercontinental UK, who led the group, said that their mission is to express concerns with respect to the ongoing police brutality protest in country. Magaji said that Nigeria is the giant of Africa not only to citizens but to neighbouring countries which in turn looks up to Nigeria as a support pillar. “We owe the rest of Africa this responsibility by protecting our global image and proving to the world that our diversity is not a challenge but our strength.

This is a clear indication of how the youths feel about the constant harassment by SARS. Not all youths are bad, some of us are entrepreneurs and we run our businesses. “So we are raising our voices to the right authority to address the issue,’’ he said However, he said that though government has made a move by changing the name from SARS to SWAT, they forget that it would not change their attitude. The police need to be reformed. “This is trending in the social media and the world is watching which will in turn affect us in the diaspora. Rukayya Ibrahim, Senior Assistant Registrar for Baze University, Abuja, applauded the commission for giving the group the platform for the conversation to take place. She said “the general feeling of Nigerians is that of frustration. We cannot deny that, all we are asking the government is to show us the same support we gave this government during the 2015 election.

One dies, three injured as car hits #EndSARS protesters

One person has been killed and three others injured as a car rammed into #ENDSARS protesters in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The protesters had gathered in front of the Ondo Governor’s office when a Toyota Camry marked LND 778 GL and two commercial motorcyclists rammed into the crowd.

One person was said to have died on the spot while others were rushed to the hospital.

Ondo Police spokesman, ASP Tee-Leo Ikoro, who confirmed the incident, said family of the deceased has agreed to accept their fate.

He said the family has requested for the body for burial

17 KASU medical students test positive for COVID-19

No fewer than 17 medical students of Kaduna State University (KASU) recalled for examinations have tested positive for coronavirus.

Chairman KASU Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Comrade Tukur Abdulkadir, disclosed this to reporters on Friday.

He said the positive cases have vindicated the union’s opposition to reopening of the institution.

He said: “As you are aware, the management of Kaduna State University has opened the university and plans to conduct examination beginning from Monday, 19th of October, 2020.

“To this moment, Kaduna State Government has not officially announced the re-opening of tertiary institutions. Although the 2019/2020 academic session has been significantly affected by Covid-19 lockdown, re-opening the university at this material time is tantamount to trading the lives of students and staff for the conduct of the examination.

“The decision by the management of KASU to re-open is in gross violation of the Covid-19 Protocol as highlighted by the Presidential Task Force (PTF) and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

“This action also violates the standard provision and regulations guiding conduct of University examinations.

“Let this be known to the general public, almost all the guidelines as stipulated by PTF/NCDC are not in existence in Kaduna State University at the moment.

“Students congregate very closely without facemask, and hostels are overcrowded. It is on record that some weeks ago, 17 out of about 50 medical students who were recalled for examination tested positive to Covid-19.”

He said the examination proposed for October 19 was not feasible because students were not given sufficient time for revision.

Besides, he alleged the institution have not been following COVID-19 protocols, hinting there were neither adequate spacing nor Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) for students and lecturers.

He warned there might be a spike in COVID-19 infection considering the institution is not residential.

#EndSARS Protest Turns Bloody in Benin, Two Feared Dead as Thugs Attack Protesters

No fewer than two people were feared dead Friday when hooldums attacked peaceful #EndSARS protesters in Benin-City, capital of Edo State.

The state governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, swiftly condemned the attack on the #EndSARS protesters by the unidentified hoodlums, noting that a thorough investigation would commence immediately to bring the culprits to justice.

Obaseki charged the Police Command to come out in full force to provide adequate security to the protesters, as they were exercising their rights as concerned citizens of Nigeria.

“I have just learnt that hoodlums have attacked #ENDSARS protesters, who have conducted themselves peacefully in Benin City. I extend condolences to the victims of the attacks, including those who lost their lives and others who were injured by the thugs,” Obaseki said in a statement.

The governor also tweeted his condolences from his official twitter handle @GovernorObaseki.

Armed with a white coffin and placards of various shapes and inscriptions, the protesters moved from the Kings Square, major roads and streets and Osadebay Avenue Government House Benin City.

They also chanted anti government slogans such as “Buhari Must Go and EndSARS”

Some hoodlums suspected to be boys from popular quarters in Oredo council area of the state were said to have been miffed by the disruptive actions of the #EndSARS protesters which according to them, disturbed their daily businesses.

They were said to have hauled stones at the protesters and also shot into the air which reportedly left two dead and caused several of them to sustain injuries in the process.

But irked by the ugly development, the protesters, in a reprisal, took the fight back to where the suspected thugs converged at the National Museum ground at the King’s Square (Ring Road) where they engaged in a bloody fight.

One of the victims who was caught in the crossfire during the free-for-all, Godswill Abere, had his forehead broken and soaked in blood.

Mr Abere told newsmen that he was not part of the #EndSARS protest, but was given the beating of his life over alleged claims that he was taking pictures of the fracas.

“I was just on my way from the bank. When I got to the Airport Road, some boys just attacked me because I was holding my phone. They claimed that I wanted to take pictures and videos of them. So, they snatched my phone and started hitting me from different angles,” he said.

“I am yet to recover the phone. They have my phone. The make is Tecno Camon 12. I was not part of the protest,” Mr Abere stated.

Also, one of the #EndSARS protesters who gave his name as Dennis Osaretin, said their action was in solidarity with the protest that is currently going on across the states of the country.

He said, “I am here to show solidarity to the Nigerian youths on their recent call for the end of SARS and not just the end of SARS but for a total overhaul and reform of the Nigeria Police and the entire Nigeria security architecture and to a larger extent, a total reform and overhaul of the Nigerian states.”

“All we are looking for now, is a state that works for all, a state that works for the youth, provides employment, provides safety and security for our people beyond the lips service.

“We have come out here to show that we are tired of the way the country is and we want something for a change at least for once,” Mr Osaretin said.

The protesters had also called for a total end to SARS and SWAT and for drastic measures towards ending impunity and brutality by operatives of the country’s police force.

However, the siege mounted by angry protesters caused endless hours of traffic gridlock along Sapele road, Akpkpava, New Lagos and New Benin roads, Sakponba and All the link roads leading to the Government reservation Areas (GRA).

Commuters were stranded in traffic while the protest lasted.

IPPIS: ASUU orders members to shun FG’s officials on biometric capture

The leadership of Academic Staff Union of Universities is set for a fresh clash with the Federal Government as it has ordered its members across the country to shun the government officials who will be visiting campuses for biometric capture of academics beginning from Monday, 2020.

ASUU President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, gave the directive in a letter dated 15th October 2020, he wrote to all the Zonal Coordinators and all members of the union, urging them not to have anything to do with the verification officials, who according to him, are Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS) officials from the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation.

The letter entitled: “Update on Engagement with Government” sighted by Tribune Online reads: “We have received information that IPPIS officials from the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation will be visiting campuses as from Monday, 19th October 2020 for biometric data capture of academics. All ASUU members should have nothing to do with them. Fact-check by ASUU with the figures from the OAGF has proven the claim that our members are trooping to enrol in the IPPIS in Abuja as false. The enrolled number is inconsequential.

“On Monday, 12th October 2020, UTAS (Universities Transparency and Accountability Solution) was presented to the President and other leaders of the Nigerian Senate. Discussions on the withheld salaries, EAA, (Academic Earned Allowance), renegotiation of2009 Agreement, visitation to federal universities and proliferation of State Universities started at the meeting.

“On Tuesday, 13th October 2020, the Senate President, Deputy Senate President, the Senate Leader, Chairman of Senate Committee on Tertiary Education. Minister of Education, Munster of Labour and Employment, Accountant General of the Federation, among other government officials, met with the ASUU leadership on UTAS and other matters.

“Yesterday, 14th October 2020, the UTAS was also demonstrated to the Accountant-General of the Federation, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chairman of Senate Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFund, Executive Secretary of NUC and other stakeholders.

“Today, 15th October 2020, we shall meet with representatives of government to have decisive engagement on UTAS/IPPIS and trash out the main demands in the ongoing struggle All our members would be adequately briefed of the outcomes.

The first stage of UTAS testing has been completed. What is left is the technical testing which is commencing immediately. All stakeholders applauded the innovation that UTAS represents. IPPIS is a World Bank creation imposed on Nigeria. UTAS is a creation of Nigerian scholars to secure our data, ensure the autonomy of Nigerian Universities and reposition our University system for global competitiveness.

The leadership of our great Union is fully aware of the hardship the non-payment of salaries by the Accountant- General and other forms of intimidation by over-zealous Vice-Chancellors have unleashed on our membership and we are leaving no stone unturned to redress the situation. Therefore, all members of ASUU should stay away from anything related to IPPIS; so as not to jeopardize the ongoing critical engagement with the Federal Government.”

However, at the meeting with the Federal Government officials on Thursday, ASUU President, Ogunyemi had expressed the readiness to call off the strike if the Federal government was able to address some of the demands of the Union, with the Federal Government promising to release the sum of N30 billion as part of the Academic Earned Allowance for the lecturers.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, at the end of the meeting, said the Accountant General of the Federation was committed to releasing the money before November 6.

“The next day which was Thursday, one of the students (a girl) was found dead in her uniform in the river, a situation that prompted another protest by the students, this time on Thursday, the protest was hijacked by some youths who were not happy with the death of the schoolgirl”

“The NSCDC seeing that there would be a crisis, they quickly called the Special Tax force that is deployed within the area to forestall crime and kidnaping, the Special Tax force arrived in Peva, they opened fire on the protesters, that was when a stray bullet hit a roadside mechanic and he died instantly”

“The two other students who were declared missing by the school authority have not been seen up to this time am speaking with you” the source disclosed on phone.

It was also reliably gathered that the police commissioner had engaged the locals and other security agencies in a round table discussion to calm the situation.

FG to release N30bn earned allowances to ASUU

The Federal Government has agreed to release N30 billion as part payment of the Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Sen. Chris Ngige. Minister of Labour and Employment said this at the end of a meeting between the Federal Government and ASUU on Friday in Abuja.

“The Accountant General of the Federation (AGF) was committed to release N30 billion on or before Nov. 6.

“The remaining N10 billion would be spread equally over the two tranches to be paid in May 2021 and February 2022 respectively. The OAGF should quickly conclude the verification of figures of EAA claims so as to clean up the figures from 2014 to 2020.

“To this end, a committee would be constituted by NUC to develop a template that would capture all the agreed allowances in the 2009 Agreement for all the Unions in the Universities.

“Thereafter, the OAGF and the National University Commission (NUC) are to quickly conclude the verification of the EAA figures, so as to defray the payment from 2014 to 2020. ASUU is to work with the OAGF and NUC to achieve that by the end of December,” he said.

He noted that the process of mainstreaming of the EAA into annual budget using the agreed formula shall be activated.

He also said that the NUC and Ministry of Education are to coordinate the activation process immediately and should be concluded by Nov. 6th.

Ngige added that the National Assembly has agreed to implement the process of mainstreaming provided the amount involved is sent in as quickly as possible by the Ministry of Education.

The minister also said that both parties agreed on the issue of funding for the revitalisation of public universities.

“In spite of the economic downturn as a result of COVID-19 pandemic, government have offer N20 billion payable by the end of January 2021, ” he said.

He said that ASUU also agreed to take the offer to its members for consideration and revert by Oct. 21.

“The Minister of Education will follow up with the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning on its earlier Memo to Mr President on sources of alternative funding for revitalisation to facilitate the process of additional funding of the University system.

“This is with a view to reactivating the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of 2013 as agreed in the Memorandum of Action (MoA) of 2019,” he said.

Ngige, however, said it was agreed that on the issue of Salary Shortfall that ASUU will confirm and report at the next meeting.

On the state universities, it was agreed that the NUC Act will be amended in order to strengthen its regulatory capacity.

It was agreed that ASUU will work with NUC on this and then involve the relevant Committee of the National Assembly.

He noted that on the payment of EAA to ASUU members at the University of Ilorin that the issue has been resolved.

Ngige however noted that the meeting was informed that the visitation panels to Federal Universities have been approved by Mr President, but they have not been gazetted.

He said that the Federal Ministry of Education is to ensure gazetting within two weeks on or before Oct. 29th.

“The meeting agreed that the Panel will be inaugurated latest by the end of November and the Panel will have a four to six weeks mandate to finish its work by Dec. 31st and submit two reports per university covering five years periods of 2011 – 2015 and 2016 – 2020,” he said.

Ngige also revealed that government renegotiating team would be reconstituted on or before Oct. 31, and the renegotiation will be concluded on or before Dec. 31.

On the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), the meeting was informed that ASUU has met its timeline regarding the first stage of the initial demonstration of the efficacy of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) to government.

The meeting also agreed that if UTAS passed all the integrity test, which involve the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), it would be adopted for the payment of the University staff.

Meanwhile the meeting could not agree on how payment would be done for ASUU members during the transitional period of UTAS tests.

It said that the government side again appealed to ASUU to enroll on IPPIS platform in view of the Presidential directive that all Federal Government employees should be paid via IPPIS.

It added that they can thereafter be migrated to UTAS whenever certified digitally efficient and effective with accompanying security coverage.

The ASUU maintained that given ASUU’s invention of UTAS, it should be exempted from IPPIS in the transition period.

Also on the issue of withheld salaries of ASUU members, the meeting agreed that Government will pay this money as soon as the mode of payment is agreed upon by both parties.

The meeting is to reconvene on Oct. 21 for ASUU to report back on the decision of her National Excecutive Counclil (NEC), in order to facilitate the calling off of their strike.

End SARS: Police lament killing of officers as protests continue nationwide

The killing of Policemen with their rifles stolen is trending in Delta State. The latest is the killing of a Mobile Policeman, Inspector Gbadura. He was killed at a filling station in Etuwewe junction along Deco road in Warri on Thursday night about 9 pm.

The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya in a text message confirmed the report this morning.

She said,”True, you already have the same details I have”.

This is coming after a Policeman and a civilian were recently killed at Eku Community in Ethiope-East Local Government Area.

Another Mobile Policeman was also killed on Sunday, October 11 at a shopping mall in Osubi, Okpe Local Government Area. He was killed for daring to stop the gunmen who were trying to burgle into the shopping mall.

All of these are happening as the #ENDSARS# protests continues nationwide inspite of the ban on the activities of Officials of the “Special Anti-Robbery Squad” by the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.

With the developments, the lives of Policemen seem to be in great danger in Delta State, Nigeria as no one including the media speaks for their interest.

The Divisional Police Officer,”B” Division in Warri, CSP Benjamin Igometi was in a state of mourning when Our Correspondent him over the mobile policeman who was shot dead. He couldn’t speak enough. He was so cold as he managed to confirm the report.

The roads in Delta State are almost lacking in the presence of Policemen on the roads.

After the ban by the IGP that all SARS Officials should leave the roads, about 20 persons were kidnapped along the Ughelli road in Agorfure motors, a commercial tricycle and other private vehicles.

The absence of the Policemen whether good or bad is giving rise to the activities of the criminals in the State and elsewhere in the Country.

In a telephone chat with Our Correspondent in Warri, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Hafiz Inuwa bemoaned the spate of killing of Policemen by gunmen in the State.

CP Inuwa said the police will do all it can unravel the brains behind the killing of Policemen in the State.

While noting that no one is speaking for the interests of the Policemen who are also citizens of the Country as the #ENDSARS# protests, CP Inuwa said the protesters blocked the Onitsha head bridge from the Asaba end yesterday.

He said, he has warned his men not to provoke the protesters who are equally looking for who will provoke them so that they start destroying the properties of innocent Nigerians as well as attacking Policemen in the process.

No SARS official will join new tactical unit – Police

The Nigerian police authorities Wednesday said no officials of the now defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) will be deployed to its new tactical unit.

Police spokesman Frank Mba said in a statement that the operations of the new Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) will be “intelligence-driven”.

“Prospective members of this new team will also undergo psychological and medical examination to ascertain their fitness and eligibility for the new assignment,” Mba said in a separate statement on Tuesday.

SARS was scrapped at the weekend following days of protests by Nigerian youth who demanded that the unit be scrapped.

The unit was accused of extrajudicial killings, kidnapping, extreme forms of torture, extortion and intimidation.

Members of the squad were known to arrest young Nigerians for simply owning laptops and expensive phones, especially iPhones. These gadgets were usually searched forcefully, sometimes even at gunpoint.

Mba said the new unit created to “fill the gaps” left by the proscription of SARS will “barred from indiscriminate and unlawful search of phones, laptops and other smart devices.”

Protests against police brutality leave Nigerian cities gridlocked

A wave of demonstrations against police brutality in Nigeria showed no sign of abating on Wednesday, with a 10th straight day of marches being staged in Abuja, the capital, and Lagos, the commercial hub.

The protests were triggered by the circulation of a video clip purportedly showing a civilian being killed by the police’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad. The unit had faced prior accusations of human rights violations, torture and extra-judicial killings.

At least 10 people have died nationwide since the demonstrations began on October 5, according to advocacy group Amnesty International. Tolu Ogunlesi, an adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari, has confirmed just one death on Twitter.

The situation was further inflamed on October 12 when a protester in Lagos was shot by police. Protest organisers have since said on social media that several main streets and bridges in Lagos would be blocked until the officer responsible was arrested.

Several schools announced they would close to avoid children being caught in the gridlock.

While most previous protests in Nigeria have been quashed by the security forces, this time the government has prohibited the use of force, ordered the release of all arrested participants and disbanded the anti-robbery unit.

Its approach may have been prompted by the scale of the protests – the largest in a decade – and widespread defiance against measures instituted to try and quell them.

Despite the government’s conciliatory moves, some protesters remain in detention and troops have been deployed to harass crowds in Abuja, said Aisha Yesufu, a protest organiser, who recounted how she had been kicked by a soldier during a march in the city on Tuesday.

Demonstrations are continuing because Nigerians “want to be sure that what the government said it’s doing is being done,” she said. “The youth can see that the government cannot be trusted, because there’s no sincerity of purpose from them at all.”

The airing of pictures and video clips depicting police brutality in real time on platforms such as Twitter and WhatsApp has made it more difficult for the authorities to deny the validity of the protesters’ complaints or protect the identity of the responsible officers.

Some of the marches have been organised using virtual private networks, preventing security agencies from getting advance notice.

When the government clamped down on Flutterwave, a payment platform used to collect money to help the protesters, a new Bitcoin-based platform was quickly established to raise funds.

Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy and its largest oil producer, ranks as the worst-performing country in the 2016 World Internal Security and Police Index compiled by the International Police Science Association. The gauge measures the ability of security bodies to render services.

The Nigerian Senate said on Twitter that the protests were justified, given the anti-robbery unit’s conduct. A new Special Weapons and Tactics Team has been established to replace the squad, but the protesters have already started a new social media campaign calling for its disbandment.

Chronicles of slay kings and queens.

Can you tell if a person is truly blessed by looking at a picture? This reminds me of that proverb,”not all that glitters is gold”. So many people are going through unpleasant situations and make the world believe that they have everything at their fingertip. I really feel it’s a trend in this dispensation and as such is the poor get poorer.

Many are faking it just to impress others while they do nothing to elevate their true financial status. It’s not a new thing to hear a young and handsome dude bragging about working in an oil company when truly, he works in a filling station. I must say that in life, it doesn’t matter how we start out but what matters is doing something legit for a living and driving towards a common goal ,” a better life” .

We will make it , that will definitely happen and this is why it is very important to stop worrying about how far your friend , colleague or an unknown person has gone. I believe alot of people suffer from inferiority complex and they stoop so low to fake their lifestyle just to impress others. So, it happens that this guy drives a very nice car while you trek despite earning the same salary. Then you decide to borrow your friend’s car to work , just to pull a stunt and prove that you have a car too. You forget that investment is the pathway to wealth and all you need do is cut short your flamboyant expenses in order to acquire necessities.

I keep saying comparing yourself with others is unhealthy . If you want a better life , go out for it , put in the work and never give up. If checking other people’s status makes you feel inferior, stop checking it or better still , keep your head high and believe you can be anything you choose to be in life with perseverance , faith and hardwork. I feel that’s a good vibe!

Hi ladies , let me share something interesting with you too. I know about this particular lady down my street , she wears expensive wigs and it seems she has many of it , she puts on designers all the time and oh , her nails looks very expensive. You know about the trendy powdered nails , right? That’s her favourite.

I will say that the reason why many expensive looking ladies remain liabilities is because , instead of investing the bulk of money they earn or which is handed to them frequently , they keep lavishing it on material things just to look ravishing. However, if you are beautiful , you are beautiful. You really don’t need to spend extravagantly to achieve it.

Can I ask a question? What’s is the big deal if a young lady owns a mansion , an empire and makes a positive impact? I appreciate good looks , I’m a fashion lover but not a desperate one. I will not go out of my way to buy something I cannot afford. Truth be told , this is sheer stupidity and many ladies are guilty of it. Why do we do extreme things just to impress people who would only compliment us by saying , ” Oh, you look good”. It doesn’t pass that, does it?

Are you paid heavily to look good ? If not , why stress yourself and compete with celebrities who dress up for showbiz? Why do you spend extravagantly when you haven’t made enough to take care of your unborn children? Let us remember about the responsibilities that the future will bring along with it while we live in the present. I doubt if many ladies and guys think about this. Slay kings and queens , this is for you, investment is the pathway to wealth!

We Are Suffering, Paid ‘Peanuts’, Nigerian Policewoman Says

A Nigerian policewoman has said that the #EndSARS protest will do nothing to the rot in the system because police officers were paid ‘peanuts’ while politicians they protect take huge sums of money home.

She disclosed this during a radio programme in Lagos.

The policewoman said though she earns N53,000 monthly, she’s been unable to pay her house rent for three years.

According to her, most police officers were suffering.

Over the past few days, there have been renewed calls for the scrapping of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force over reports of brutality and extrajudicial killings.

Following the protests, Mohammed Adamu, Inspector-General of Police, had disbanded SARS on Sunday.

President Muhammadu Buhari had also issued a directive calling for a reform of the police in the country.

However, the protests have continued with activists issuing a five-point demand including the release of all persons arrested and justice for victims of police brutality.

#ENDSARS: Youths march in support of Buhari, IGP in Abuja

A group under the auspices of Coalition of Civil Society organisations has applauded President Muhammadu Buhari and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Muhammed Adamu for disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

At a rally in support of police and other security agencies which took place at the Unity Fountain, Abuja, the coalition condemned the continuation of the #ENDSARS protests across the states.

Chief Convener of the Coalition, Comrade Olayemi Success, described the actions of the protesters as “totally uncalled-for and unacceptable, originally, the protest was ill conceived as the advantages and usefulness of SARS in curbing crimes in Nigeria overwhelmingly outweighed their few mistakes, therefore, such protests can be highly demoralising”.

Olayemi added: “Today, we the leaders of different Civil society organizations are gathered here from far and near with some of our members from every nook and cranny of Nigeria in solidarity with our security agencies especially the Nigeria Police force, recently, we are all aware of pockets of protest demanding for the scrap of Special Anti- Robbery Squad (SARS).

“The Inspector General of Police (IGP) in display of his 21st century Police officer’s compliance, highest level of professionalism and best regards for Democracy yielded to the call and disbanded the SARS, surprisingly, the protesters still continue with their trade of protest.

“In view of the above, this solidarity march is very important to boost the morale of the police men and women, for them to know that well -meaning Nigerians appreciate their sacrifices in securing Nigeria, we are convinced that Police is our friend and everyone that sees police as enemies are suspects.

“Let us use this opportunity to commend the world best Inspector General of Police for creating SPECIAL WEAPONS AND TACTICS TEAM (SWATT), which we believe will discharge all the responsibilities of the disbanded SARS more professionally and effectively, also, it is very important to call on the National Assembly to approve more funding for Nigeria Police force for adequate security”.

The coalition called on all Nigerians to collectively join hands with the Nigeria Police Force for an enduring security and peace in Nigeria.

On Sunday, the government said SARS would be dissolved. And replaced it with a Special Weapons and Tactics team (SWAT). SWAT will “fill the gaps” left by SARS, the government said. Some Nigerians are reacting under the hashtag #EndSWAT. They fear that SWAT is just a new name for SARS. However, in volatile northeastern Nigeria, the public have one the opposite way.
