Activists demand release of #endsars protesters.

Prominent Black Lives Matters activists and celebrities have written to Nigeria’s president demanding justice over the treatment of people during protests against police brutality.

The group, which includes singer Alicia Keys and campaigner Greta Thunberg, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to free jailed protesters.

They also called for a “transparent investigation” into the alleged killing of protesters by armed forces.

“We cannot stay silent,” they said.

Witnesses say they saw soldiers open fire on protesters in Lagos on 20 October after weeks of protests, which began against the much-hated police unit, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (Sars), but then morphed into greater calls for better governance.

“In the midst of a global pandemic, your people sought to bring peace and justice to their land, and they made Africa and its diaspora proud in doing so,” the letter to President Buhari said.

“Yet their peaceful requests were met with state-sanctioned violence and suppression, as your administration meted out unwarranted force against its own unarmed citizens.”

The letter was organised by #BlackLivesMatter movement co-founder Opal Tometi, and timed to coincide with International Human Rights Day.

Other signatories included actors Kerry Washington, Danny Glover and Mark Ruffalo, as well as writers Afua Hirsch, Reni Eddo-Lodge and Naomi Klein.

“As people who have supported the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States and throughout the diaspora, we cannot be silent when similar atrocities take place in African countries,” the letter said.

“We demand respect for the Nigerian people, especially as they engage in their constitutional right to protest grave injustices.”

As well as demanding the release of all jailed protesters, activists and journalists, the signatories demand that all soldiers and security officials responsible for the alleged shooting at Lekki Toll Gate on 20 October are held to account, and that the ban on peaceful protests is lifted.

Amnesty International says 12 people were killed in the shooting, although the Nigerian army insists its soldiers were firing blank bullets.

judicial panel has been set up in Lagos to investigate both events at Lekki and the activities of Sars. While it promises neutrality and justice, some protesters say they fear government retribution if they speak out.

Since the protests, a number of activists say they have been targeted by the authorities, the BBC’s Mayeni Jones reports. Some have had their bank accounts frozen by the Nigerian Central Bank and some have been detained without charge, before being eventually released.

Assets Declaration: Magu Honours CCB Invitation

The suspended Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu, yesterday honoured the invitation of the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) in Abuja.

Sources close to the matter also disclosed that Magu was at the CCB office in Abuja on Thursday, December 3, 2020 with his lawyers over the CCB’s invitation on his assets declaration.

But the suspended EFCC boss could not be attended to as the CCB was having its annual lecture with a theme titled: “Fighting Corruption for Socio-Economic Development”.

It was further gathered that Magu later visited the CCB on Friday, December 4, 2020 where he spent couple of hours for the interview on his assets declaration.

The CCB had earlier invited Magu on November 17, 2020 and asked him to come along with: Acknowledgement slips of all his assets declaration since he joined the public service; Copies of his appointment letter, acceptance, records of service and payslips from January to May, 2020; and all title documents of his landed properties both developed and undeveloped.

But Magu replied in his two letters to the CCB that he would not be able to honour its invitation on the grounds of lack of access to the relevant documents which the CCB is demanding from him.

Speaking through his lawyer, Mr Wahab Shittu, Magu explained that he did not shun the CCB invitation as reported by some sections of the media but only sought a new date over lack of access to relevant documents.

The letter reads in part, “ We wish to state with high sense of responsibility that we have written two letters to the Chairman of the CBB, intimating him about the inability of our client to have access to the relevant documents as required by the CCB.

“The letters, which were dated November 16 and 17, 2020, were addressed to the CCB Chairman”.

Shittu said: “The letters were titled- Re: Investigation of Activities- Letter of Invitation, Breach of Code of Conduct for Public Officers.

“Please note that the letters were stamped and acknowledged by the office of the CCB Chairman on the said date of November 17, 2020. We also wish to state the said letters were copied to the Director of Intelligence, Investigation and Monitoring while the letters were also stamped and acknowledged by his office”.

On Magu’s inability to honour the invitation initially, he said: “Explaining the inability of our client to honour the invitation, we stated as follows: “Your letter dated November 2, 2020 with reference No.-CCB/HQ/II & M/007/2093 addressed to our client has been passed unto us to respond to as follows:

“In the referred letter, our client was requested to appear before your distinguished body on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at 11am prompt concerning the above subject matter. We have firm instructions to inform your distinguished body that our client, regrettably will not be able to honour today’s invitation in view of certain circumstances beyond his control.

“Our client’s inability to honour your invitation is as a result of his inability to access his office and the requested documents since his suspension from office. We wish to inform you that the documents which you requested for and other personal documents are still in his personal office where he has been denied access up to date.”

He further requested that the invitation “to our client be extended pending the conclusion of the exercise of the mandate of the presidential Judicial Commission of Inquiry set up against our client and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

“This request has become necessary since most of the documents requested by your Bureau were removed from our client’s offices by the Department of State Security Service (DSS) and the request of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry in the absence of our client while our client was in detention.

Shittu’s letter further stated that “based on the foregoing, it would be impossible for our client to answer your questions and provides those documents which are in the possession of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry and the Department of State Services (DSS).

“We therefore kindly request your distinguished body to graciously extend the invitation extended to our client pending the return of our client’s documents (which you requested).

“Please note that there is the need for our client to have access to the relevant documents in order to prepare for his defence to your invitation.

“In the circumstances, until such a time when our client gains access to his personal file in his office where most of the requested documents are, it is impracticable to honour your invitation, even if our client is willing to do so as an obedient and patriotic citizen.”

Teenager Plans Own Kidnap, Demands N30million From Family

The state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, while parading the suspects at the command headquarters on Monday, said the principal suspect, Ifesinachi, was still at large.

A teenager, Ujunwa Offiah, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly conspiring with her boyfriend, Blessed Ifesinachi, to fake her kidnap and demand N30million ransom from her family.

The police also arrested an accomplice, Precious Chukwu, 22, whose phone was reportedly used to negotiate with Offiah’s family.

The state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, while parading the suspects at the command headquarters on Monday, said the principal suspect, Ifesinachi, was still at large.

Odumosu said, “This is a case of conspiracy and staged kidnapping, and the man at the centre of this case, who happens to be a Uber driver, is still at large. We are going after him because he conspired with one of these two ladies, Offiah, who faked her kidnap.

“He cleverly used the phone of another girlfriend, Precious (Chukwu), to contact Offiah’s family, informing them that their daughter had been kidnapped.

“He requested N30m from Offiah’s family to get her freed, and during negotiations, which involved the police, they settled for N700,000. While the money was being dropped, we took action and in the process arrested Offiah and Precious.”

According to Punch, Offiah said she joked about the kidnap with Ifesinachi, adding that she was surprised he took it seriously.

She said, “I met Ifesinachi in October, and when we got talking. I jokingly told him to kidnap me so that he would collect ransom from my sister. I never knew that he took it seriously until he told me he had gone to the village to meet a native doctor and also discussed with his guys about the deal. When he said he was ready, he realised that I was scared and threatened to kill me if I informed anybody of the plan.

“So, I refused to tell anybody because he is a cultist. On November 27, on my way back from school, I went to meet him and a girl, Patience, at 2nd Rainbow, and from there, we went to a hotel. At the hotel, he called my sister to demand N30m as ransom, but when I heard that my grandmother had collapsed in the village because of what happened to me, I told him to accept any amount they offered.

“On Thursday, he went to get the money and came back to the hotel on Friday morning. He told me he collected N600,000 and released me after that. When I saw my family members, I told them that some guys kidnapped me. I lied to my family and the police because he threatened to kill me, including my sister’s children. It was when I saw his girlfriend and the schoolbag that I confessed about the whole kidnap.”

Chukwu denied knowing that her phone was being used to negotiate the ransom.

She said, “He (Ifesinachi) asked for my phone that he wanted to use it for business. I never knew he wanted to use it to do this kind of a thing. I was at my workplace when the police came to arrest me.”

Lagos sets up special squad to check driving against traffic

The Lagos State Government has launched a special security team, named ‘Anti-Oneway and Other Traffic Offenders Squad’ to checkmate one-way driving and other traffic offences by motorists.

The squad was set up by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hakeem Odumosu, at the instance of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, with the specific mandate to arrest and impound vehicles plying one-way, BRT lanes and also motorcyclists operating in restricted areas.

The squad is led by the Commander of policemen in Governor’s Monitoring Team (GMT), Shola Jejeloye, a Superintendent of Police (SP).

It will complement activities of the existing Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Enforcement Agency (Task Force) led by Yinka Egbeyemi, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP).

In the maiden enforcement of the outfit on Monday, the GMT team combed Ikeja, Ojota and Maryland axes, arresting Okada riders who defied the State’s traffic restriction order.

The team also burst a residential area in Ikeja habouring Okada riders that are flouting the State’s Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018, retrieving various motorcycles from the building.

Some of the offenders were arrested in the enforcement for prosecution.

Jejeloye vowed that the team would not be lenient on those flouting Lagos traffic regulations, warning motorists who may have the intention of driving on one-way lanes to desist from the act.

He said: “We have been mandated by the Commissioner of Police to stop acts of indiscipline by some motorists who are in the habit of flouting traffic regulations of Lagos State. We will discharge this duty without fear or favour, and our activities will be professionally exercised in line with the mandate of the team.

“I, therefore, urge motorists to obey the traffic laws and be patient when driving on the roads. We will not be lenient on motorists that are in the habit of committing traffic offences. Offenders arrested will be prosecuted and have their vehicles confiscated.”

Nigeria: Govt Reduces Fuel Price

The federal government, on Monday night, succumbed to the pressure from organized labour and reduced present price of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly known as Petrol, by N5.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, who announced this to journalists after a meeting with leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), which held at Old Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, said the reduction would be from N168 to N162.44 per litre with effect from December 14.

The meeting, which started at 8:55pm Monday lasted till Tuesday morning at 1:27am.

Daily Trust reports that the product is presently sold at N168, following the decision of the Petroleum Products Marketing Company to increase the ex-depot price of petrol from N147.67 per litre to N155.17 per litre in November.

The ex-depot price is the price at which the product is sold by the PPMC to marketers at the depots.

According to Ngige, a technical committee has been set up to ensure price stability in the industry, noting that the committee, which will report back to the larger house on January 25, will appraise the market forces and other things that would ensure stability in the industry.

“Our discussion was fruitful and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, which is the major importer and marketers of petroleum products, and customers have agreed that there will be a slide down of the pump price of PMS and that the price cut will get us about N5 per litre and that the price cut will take effect from next Monday, a week today,” Ngige told journalists.

The minister explained that the price reduction was not meant to suspend deregulation because it did not affect the price of crude oil but on areas where the NNPC as the main importer had agreed that it could cut cost like freight and demurrage costs.

He argued that the reduction of new price was a product of a joint committee of NNPC and labour representatives which looked into ways of cutting costs.

The Labour minister also told journalists both sides agreed to wait till the next meeting date on January 25 to enable the special committee dealing with complaints to conclude their deliberations on electricity tariff.

NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, also corroborated the position of the minister, saying that the agreement was reached by both sides.

Another round of #ENDSARS protests premature, counterproductive – Gov Bello

Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has appealed to Nigerian youths to shelve any plan of embarking on another round of#EndSARS protests, saying such move would be premature, dangerous and counterproductive.

Bello in a special broadcast to Nigerian youths on Sunday, said he was worried following intelligence reports that youths were mobilizing to resume another round of#EndSARS protests in some selected cities beginning from tomorrow, Monday December 7. According to him, there was urgent need for all relevant stakeholders to take steps that would ensure the country does not witness another round of #EndSARS protests. He said the country was yet to recover from the devastating impacts of the last #EndSARS protests whichever were hijacked by hoodlums who unleashed unimaginable mayhem on innocent people and engaged in massive looting and destruction of both public and private infrastructures across the country. According to him, another round of protests will worsen the already precarious security situation and economic recession currently bedeviling the country. “I deem another round of #EndSARS protests to be premature and counter-productive at this time.

Apart from the higher likelihood of conflict with the police earlier canvassed, we must also admit that the security situation in the country is very precarious at the moment. “All patriots must therefore make conscious efforts not to degrade a parlous security situation further. Nationwide protests at this time will only overburden the load-bearing capabilities of our security architecture increasing the likelihood of total collapse. No matter the narrative, I doubt that out-of-control anarchy is an objective of the #EndSARS protests. “It is also true that we live in an economy that is bleeding badly right now. Traditional responses to COVID-19 has hurt, not just Nigeria, but all other countries of the world. Many have fallen into recession. “To worsen matters, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) predicted 3 days ago that the pandemic could push the number of people living in extreme poverty to over 1 billion by 2030. Thank God they are owning up to my earlier prediction, warning and caution. “Nigeria’s earning and foreign exchange situation is too fragile as we speak to resist sustained shocks. Another nationwide protest will worsen the multidimensional poverty indices all over our country and work greater hardship on the ordinary Nigerians we claim to be advocating for”, he said. He said apart from the negative impacts of such protests on security situation and the nation’s economy, it will also will also lead to disruptions f several social activities and celebrations people have already planned during the Yuletide season.

“There are also sociocultural implications. Nigerians tend to travel a lot during the Christmas holidays. Statistics show that travel during this period is not only for pleasure as widely supposed. “For many of our people, this is the only time in the year when they can attend to pressing life responsibilities like marriages, hospital appointments, funerals of loved ones and even community improvement events. “As a Governor, I am aware hundreds of such events will happen in towns big and small in my state and beyond. Many have been fixed for months or even years in advance with much expense already gone into planning. “All of these will be disrupted by nationwide protests at this time and I appeal to the great Nigerian youths not to be the harbingers of so much pain and loss to their compatriots – individuals, families and communities alike. “Then of course, we have sociopolitical reasons to thread carefully. We have the example of countries which have gone the path of chaotic social change only to collapse as proof that action and caution are siamese twins in the journey of all successful revolutions” he said. He said the government in response to earlier demands by the Nigerian youths, had set up panels in various states of the federation where issues of abuses and human rights violations were currently being handled, adding that the youths should explore that avenue to seek redress. Governor Bello also advised the youths to look beyond protests as the only means of effecting social change in the country, adding they should begin to organize themselves to take part in the 2023 political process which could help them to effect the necessary changes in the country. “Contrary to perceptions, 2023 General Elections are not far at all. If God keeps our lives, we are only about 800 days away from February, 2023 when all of this youthful energy can be harnessed and channeled properly for a true revolution via the ballot box.

Till then, there is more than enough work before the #EndSARS group. “I therefore appeal to the Nigerian Youth, especially the #EndSARS protesters, to rethink all plans for protests at this time, and indeed before the Panels have rounded off their assignments. Such would be premature, dangerous and above all, counter-productive to our stated aims and objectives. “I must also stress that when all is said and done, the fastest route to desired social change in a democracy is via the political process. The guarantee of periodic elections and change of guard in government is one reason never to burn it all down at once. Perhaps the most impressive thing about the US protesters is how much they have utilized the ballot box in 2020”, he said.

Nigerians Facing Hardship Caused By #EndSARS Protest, COVID-19, Says Aregbesola

According to the minister, the just concluded #The EndSARS protest, which gripped the whole country, has caused a lot of suffering to the people.

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has said President Muhammadu Buhari is aware of the current hardship Nigerians are facing.

According to the minister, the just concluded #The EndSARS protest, which gripped the whole country, has caused a lot of suffering to the people.

Recall that thousands of Nigerians held the #EndSARS campaign in October, taking to the streets to protest police brutality.

The protests resulted in the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad unit of the police.

Speaking at the commissioning of a central mosque built by Ta’Awunu Islamic group in Iwo, Osun State, on Saturday, Aregbesola said, “The President is aware of the hardship facing the citizens of the country. This was caused by the pandemic and the #EndSARS protests which erupted in many states of the federation. The president is doing all his best, and I can assure you that very soon, all will be well and we will be happy again.

“My reasons for coming to the state is in two folds; #EndSARS and to remind us that Coronavirus is still very much with us. We can’t afford to return to when the virus was at its peak in the country. That is why we must observe social distancing and use our face masks always. Cases are still being recorded every day.

“During this festive period, we must be cautious. We should obey the holy prophet’s teachings that say, ‘When there is an epidemic somewhere, we should not live there, and those outside should not join until the epidemic is over.’ We must take responsibilities for our lives.”

Nigeria’s health sector gets over N1trn budgetary allocation, not N43bn ― Gbajabiamila

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila on Wednesday assured on the 9th Assembly’s resolve to prioritize the health sector with a view to ensuring better service delivery for Nigerians.

Hon. Gbajabiamila who gave the assurance during an interactive session with a delegation of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) led by its president, Prof. Innocent Ujah, pledged the House resolve to look at the issue of the outstanding allowances of the Nigerian health workers.

Also at the meeting, the Speaker who frowned at the insinuations in some quarters that the health sector has the least budget of about N43 billion, argued that the sector gets over N1 trillion budgetary allocation.

He also reiterated the House resolves towards fast-tracking the legislative process on a bill to repeal and re-enact the Nigeria Medical and Dental Council Act.

“Healthcare is one of the major areas of focus of the 9th House Legislative Agenda. We will continue to stand with you and anything that will help our country move forward. You can’t talk about nation-building without getting your healthcare delivery right.

“Just be rest assured that you have in this institution a friend. We will work with you. I must commend you that under the difficult terrain you work in, you’re still able to do your job,” he said.

The Speaker also supported the idea of a bank for the health sector as suggested by the NMA President, saying the House would look into it.

“We’ll like to explore the idea of a health bank further. We’ll work with our doctors in the House to know how we can go about it. If you can give us a little synopsis of it, we’ll work with it.”

He said the House would look at the suggestion to review the retirement age for medical doctors and other health workers.

“On the increase in budget allocation, I believe it has been increased to some extent. I don’t know the exact figure right now, but we’ll look at it. If there’s need to review it further, we’ll do that.”

Earlier, the NMA President, Prof. Ujah, who is also the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, said the visit was to strengthen the relationship between the Speaker’s office and the association.

He pleaded with the Speaker for the House to come up with good legislation for the health sector; enhance the remuneration and allowances of medical personnel; ensure new retirement age of consultants at 70 and others at 65; improve funding and budgetary allocation for the sector as well as establish a bank for health as in the case of agriculture and industry.

On his part, the chairman of the House Committee on Healthcare Services, Hon. Tanko Sununu, a medical doctor, applauded the Speaker for all his interventions in the sector and said the NMA team was on a thank-you visit.

He then presented an award of excellence given to the Speaker by the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) at its Annual General Meeting held recently.

This got me thinking…

close up of leaf

I am a football fan not a fanatic.
The death of this golden legend called Diego Maradona got me wondering about the essence of life. Little wonder when billionaire Femi Otedola in a telephone interview, was asked by the radio presenter “Sir what can you remember made you a happiest man in life?”
Femi said:
“I have gone through four stages of happiness in life and finally I understood the meaning of true happiness.
The first stage was to accumulate wealth and means. But at this stage I did not get the happiness I wanted.
Then came the second stage of collecting valuables and items. But I realized that the effect of this thing is also temporary and the lustre of valuable things does not last long.
Then came the third stage of getting big projects. That was when I was holding 95% of diesel supply in Nigeria and Africa. I was also the largest vessel owner in Africa and Asia. But even here I did not get the happiness I had imagined.
The fourth stage was the time a friend of mine asked me to buy wheelchair for some disabled children. Just about 200 kids.
At the friend request, I immediately bought wheelchairs.
But the friend insisted that I go with him and hand over the wheelchairs to the children. I got ready and went with him.
There I gave these wheel chairs to these children with my own hands. I saw the strange glow of happiness on the faces of these children. I saw them all sitting on the wheelchairs, moving around and having fun.
It was as if they had arrived at a picnic spot where they are sharing a jackpot wining.
I felt REAL joy inside me. When I decidedto leave one of the kids grabbed my legs. I tried to free my legs gently but the child stared at my face and held my legs tightly.
I bent down and asked the child: Do you need something else?
The answer this child gave me not only made me happy but also changed my attitude to life completely. This child said:
“I want to remember your face so that when I meet you AGAIN if GOD/DEATH allow, I will be able to recognize you and thank you once again”

What would you be remembered for after you leave that office or place?
Will anyone desire to see your face again where it all matters?

This got me thinking. I pray it does same to everyone.

Have a wonderful day

Don’t assume you know your RIDE!!!

This is the time to overhaul your car If you must travel with it for Christmas holidays. A thorough examination is necessarye to ensure it (your ride) is in good condition before travelling with it.

Essential Tips and Guidelines

1) Flush your radiator water and add Radiator coolant to avoid overheating.

2) Inspect your Camber Bushing Robbers at the front. They determine the stability of your steering.

3) Flush your break fluid and ensure your break Master and Servo are in good condition for active breaking system
4) Ensure that your Tyres have not expired. From the manufacturers date . You shall see 0216. This means 02nd week of 2016. Tyres expires after 4yrs.

5) Any time you enter porthole and your car seems to loose balance then your shock absorber is most likely to be bad. If there is Oil around your shock Absorber. Its likely to have gone bad. Or If your Mechanics after pressing It in, it does not come out slowly, then it needs replacement. But if it comes out very fast, they must have tampered with It by adding much air into it.

6) Asymco Break pad is known to be the best break pad but it does not come as break shoes.

7) When on speed and your Bonnet seems to vibrate, then you need to do wheel alignment but if the steering shakes, then you need wheel balancing.

8) If your car is missing fire then do the following:
A) change the plugs B) A plug coil might not be in good condition so replace it.
C) Replace your Fuel pump filter
D) Service your injectors and Nozzles using Abro Chock spray. Those who sell the injector know how to do it.

9) When driving and suddenly you notice that your steering has gone one side, it’s a sign that one of your back tyres is too low.

10) Finally, as you drive and you notice your automatic gear does not change very easily. Then you need to service your gearbox oil filter. You also need to replace the gearbox oil with the right specification.
It is written on the dipstick. I wish you the best.
