Indian police arrest two men after assault

Two men have been arrested in India following a violent assault on a 14-year-old Muslim boy who entered a Hindu temple to drink water, police say.

Footage of the incident, which occurred in Ghaziabad in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, sparked outrage after it was widely shared online last week.

In the video, posted on Instagram, one man can be seen beating and kicking the boy as a second person films it.

Rights groups have expressed concern over an apparent rise in such assaults.

In Uttar Pradesh, there has been an increase in recent years of reported targeted attacks on minorities, including Muslims, by “extremist Hindu groups”, according to Human Rights Watch.

Some Hindu temples in India do not permit entry to non-Hindus, and the site in Ghaziabad had a sign stating that it was “forbidden” for Muslims to enter, The Indian Express newspaper reported.

The incident involving the boy in Ghaziabad, named as Asif, reportedly took place last Thursday and was later posted online by one of the suspects, police said.

It showed the teenager being struck in the head, forced to the ground and then repeatedly kicked, including in the groin.

Asif’s father – not named in the report – told The Indian Express that his son “was in the area when he felt thirsty… he saw a tap at the temple and began drinking“.

However, managers of the Hindu temple in Ghaziabad have questioned whether the incident was a dispute over water, stating that there was a tap outside and that Asif should not have entered the temple grounds.

Ghaziabad police have named the suspect as Shringi Nandan Yadav, a resident of the city of Bhagalpur in the state of Bihar. They said he had told them that he was working as a caretaker at the temple where the alleged assault took place.

Another man, named only as Shivanand, has been arrested in connection with the filming of the incident, police confirmed on Sunday.

Ghaziabad police Supt Kalanidhi Naithani said the main suspect was arrested shortly after the incident was first reported, and that “strict action” would be taken.

The reaction on social media was swift – and angry.

“What kind of sick person [do] you have to be to mercilessly assault a child?” journalist Rifat Jawaid tweeted.

You’re the best’ — Fani-Kayode hails Ghanaian wife for backing him amid abuse claims.

Femi Fani-Kayode, a former minister of aviation, has once again showered encomium on Regina-Hanson Amonoo, his Ghanaian wife, for always standing by him regardless of his shortcomings.
The accolades were lavished on Regina, also known as Gina Hall, on Sunday — less than 24 hours after she defended the ex-minister over allegations of abuse levelled against him by Precious Chikwendu, his fourth and estranged wife.
Fani-Kayode has been in a heated tussle with Chikwendu for the custody of their four children since their marriage of seven years collapsed last year.
The former beauty queen had earlier alleged that the ex-minister abused her on numerous occasions while they were still together — a claim he dismissed.

Amid the face-off between the pair, Gina Hall had in a statement on Saturday debunked Chikwendu’s allegations, while backing Fani-Kayode.
In an ostensible reaction to Regina’s gesture, the ex-minister took to his social media pages to commend the Ghanaian, while reiterating his love for her.
Fani-Kayode also described Regina, his third wife, as “my everything” who always stands by him even when he makes mistakes.
“The one and only and the best of the best. As faithful as always and as constant as the northern star. Even where I made the wrong choices you forgave and stood by me. You are my everything. Love you forever G!” he wrote.
This is not the first time Fani-Kayode will be applauding Regina for backing him whenever there are controversies.
He had last year described her as the “most powerful force in his life” after she came to his defense amid allegations of domestic violence reports against him.
The ex-minister tied the knot with Gina Hall in 1997 after which he married Chikwendu in 2014.
Fani-Kayode had earlier married Saratu Attah in 1987 but the duo split three years later. In 1991, the ex-minister also married Yemisi Adeniji but they were separated by 1995.

Health Minister has resigned after six people died due to a lack of oxygen at a hospital ward treating Covid-19 patients

Jordan’s health minister has resigned after six people died due to a lack of oxygen at a hospital ward treating Covid-19 patients, state media report.

The deaths were reported early on Saturday at a new government facility in the town of Salt, about 14 miles (23km) west of the capital, Amman.

Prime Minister Bisher al-Khasawneh had asked Health Minister Nathir Obeidat to step down over the incident.

Police were sent to the hospital after dozens of relatives turned up.

The oxygen shortage, which lasted for about an hour, reportedly also affected intensive care and maternity units at the facility, although there were no reports of fatalities on those wards.

It is not yet clear why there was an oxygen shortage and an investigation is under way, Mr Obeidat said. The health minister had earlier said he felt a “moral responsibility” for what had happened.

A forensic doctor at Jordan’s health ministry, Dr Adnan Abbas, told Petra news agency that all six patients who died on Saturday were being treated for coronavirus.

Dozens of relatives whose family members were receiving treatment at the Salt hospital turned up at the facility following the news, but were prevented from entering by police and security personnel.

One relative, Fares Kharabsha, said he was inside the hospital when the incident occurred and saw staff carrying portable oxygen devices to patients, AP news agency reported.

“They resuscitated a large number of people, including my father and mother,” he said, adding: “I saw people who died.”

Jordan’s King Abdullah II has visited the hospital since the incident, Reuters news agency reported.

The country has so far reported more than 460,000 cases of Covid-19 and 5,224 coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Jordan has stepped up measures to reduce the spread of the virus in recent weeks as cases have steadily increased since late January.

Restrictions include overnight curfews at weekends, which prevent prayers inside mosques and masses in churches.

The country, which has a population of about 10 million, began its vaccination programme in January.

Adele and her ex husband have now reached the end of the road with their divorce settlement and the Rolling in the Deep singer is not going to be paying him spousal support. Adele and Simon have joint custody of their eight-year-old son Angelo.

The majority of the divorce settlement is not public information so it is unknown if Adele might’ve paid a settlement amount to her ex-husband.

When Adele and Simon broke up, they said they would still be raising their son lovingly. The couple has kept their word and will be sharing custody of Angelo.

Israeli prize winner Yehuda Meshi-Zahav has been accused of sexually assaulting women and children

The founder of one of Israel’s most prominent rescue organisations has been accused of sexually assaulting women and children over a period of decades.

Yehuda Meshi-Zahav set up Zaka in 1989, and was recently awarded the Israel Prize – the country’s highest civilian honour.

The allegations were first reported by Haaretz newspaper on Thursday, leading police to launch an investigation.

Mr Meshi-Zahav has forfeited his Israel Prize and stepped down as head of Zaka.

In a letter to Zaka members and volunteers, he said he was giving up the prize “out of deep concern for this holy organisation that I have built with my own two hands”. He also called the allegations “baseless”, Haaretz reported on Friday.

The allegations against Mr Meshi-Zahav date back to the 1980s.

Haaretz spoke to six people who say he assaulted them when they were young children, teenagers, and in their 20s.

According to local media he was investigated by police over sexual assault allegations in 2011, but the case was later closed for lack of evidence.

The statute of limitations has run out on five of the six cases described in the paper, meaning police are unable to investigate them. However, they have now launched an investigation into the sixth case, in which a woman says she was raped by Mr Meshi-Zahav when she was in her 20s.

Zaka is a network of volunteer-based community emergency response teams in Israel. It developed following Palestinian suicide attacks on Israeli buses, and its mainly ultra-Orthodox members were often first on the scene to help casualties and recover victims’ remains.

In a statement, the organisation said it wanted to “keep the names and reputations of the thousands of Zaka volunteers away from this incident, and to clarify that they have nothing to do with it”.

It added that its management was “shocked” by the allegations, and that they had trust in the official investigation.

This popular cyclist was killed near his home

An adventure athlete who cycled the world and survived falling down a mountain in India has been killed by a bus near his home in northern Israel.

Roei Sadan, known affectionately as “Jinji”, was 39 years old.

From 2007 to 2011, Mr Sadan cycled across 42 countries on six continents.

He was hit by a United Tours bus while cycling near the entrance to Kibbutz Rosh Hanikra, where he lived, on Wednesday at about 14:30 local time (12:30 GMT).

He was admitted to Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya, where he was in a critical condition until he died on Friday, Israeli Hebrew-language media reported.

In 2010, three years into his cycle around the world, Mr Sadan wrote in The Jerusalem Post: “While I cycle across continents, I am not alone. I visit Israeli embassies around the globe, I give lectures at schools and I tell the world about Israel… Some call me the ‘ambassador on wheels’.”

His route went from northern Alaska down the west coast of North, then Central, then South America. He then cycled from the tip of South Africa up to Ethiopia, and then to Israel for a two-week break.

The next leg went across Europe, then across Turkey, then through Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in Central Asia, on to China.

Finally, he cycled along the coast of Australia – two weeks of which was on a tandem bike with the blind Israeli cyclist Orly Tal, the Times of Israel reported.

Five years later, in 2015, he was climbing Stok Kangri mountain in Ladakh, north India, when he slipped on a rock during his descent and fell hundreds of metres.

He suffered a concussion and was taken to hospital in Delhi. Once stable he was transferred to a hospital in Israel, where he was in a coma.

“I remember the summit, and then I woke up two months later,” he told the Times of Israel the following year.

He went on to make a miraculous recovery, and begin cycling again.

UK royal family not racist, says Prince William.

Prince William defended Britain’s monarchy Thursday against accusations of bigotry made by his brother, Prince Harry, and sister-in-law, Meghan, insisting the family is not racist.

In comments made during a visit to an east London school, William became the first royal to directly address the explosive interview broadcast Sunday in the U.S. that Harry and Meghan gave to Oprah Winfrey.

“We’re very much not a racist family,” he said as his wife, Kate, walked by his side.

Harry and Meghan’s allegations of racism and mistreatment have rocked the royal family, and Buckingham Palace sought to respond to them in a 61-word statement Tuesday, but it has failed to quell the controversy.

William, second in line to the throne after his father Prince Charles, says he hadn’t yet spoken to Harry in the aftermath of the interview, “but I will do.’’

Meghan, who is biracial, said in the interview she was so isolated and miserable as a working member of the royal family that she had suicidal thoughts. She also said Harry told her there were “concerns and conversations” by a royal family member about the color of her baby’s skin when she was pregnant with their son, Archie.

Hers and Harry’s comments have touched off conversations around the world about racism, mental health and even the relationship between Britain and its former colonies.

William and Kate toured School21 in Stratford, east London as children returned to classes. The visit was also meant to mark the rollout to secondary schools of a mental health project Kate launched in primary schools in 2018.

TBT With Basket Mouth

Bright Okpocha, better known by his stage name Basketmouth, was born on the 14th day in September 1978 and is a Nigerian stand-up comedian and rapper.

In 1991 Bright discovered his skills in drumming, which he did for over 5 years after wards.
During his days of being an instrumentalist for his church and a band at that point, he also discovered his skills in rap music and later diverted into that path in 1994.

In 1995, he, his friends and brother formed a group called da psychopaths. It had 7 members but they split before they could even release an album or single.

Bright and his brother Godwin immediately formed a group called D Oddz and later added a third member (muyiwa osunrobi). Together, they did a couple of shows but couldn’t break through the music industry as their brand of rap wasn’t accepted then.

In the year 1996/1997, they got admitted into the University of Benin where Basketmouth studied sociology while his brother studied anthropology. They performed at a concert and got booed off the stage, Bright decided to drop the mic as a rap artist and grab the mic as a standup comedian.

His 1st standup comedy was a disaster because the crowd got irritated and booed him off the stage. Later that year (1999), he came back after a series of research on what brand of comedy could sell in UNIBEN; that was the beginning of Basket mouth’s inception and acceptation into the world of standup comedy. His professional stand up act came into existence in the year 2000 and his big break came when he met Ali Baba.

That same year, Basketmouth was billed to perform at Lagbaja’s monthly concert at Motherland, in October 1st 2000. He made his 1st appearance at the renowned Nite of a 1000 laughs. After then, it was one gig to another.

On the 1st of November 2000, the concept came to reality featuring Ali Baba, Paul Play, Teju babyface, mandy, Mr. Patrick and a host of others. Immediately after Laff n Jamz in UNIBEN, Ali Baba told Bright to come down to Lagos to expose his skills. It was hard to combine studies and standup comedy but it was done.

Things got bigger and better when Bright was invited by Tequila events to perform alongside Julius Agwu on a tour that hit over 30 higher institutions around Nigeria.
The name BASKET MOUTH hit the big screen when he featured in international concerts that witnessed the likes of Joe, Boys 2 Men, Sean Paul, Beyonce, Wyclef Jean, Dru Hill, Akon, Snoop Dogg, Ciara, Chris Brown and many others. His international gig was in Europe (2003) after which he stayed off the foreign scene until his debut performance in Atlanta at the Nigerian Reunion in 2006. This performance led to series of performances and bookings in the United States and other countries including South Africa.

Basket Mouth is currently one of the brand ambassadors of one of the leading telecommunications companies in Africa (Globacom) till date and stands out as one of the names to reckon with in the entertainment industry.

Audio cassette tape inventor Lou Ottens dies aged 94

The man who invented popular “audio cassette” tape has given up the ghost.

Lou Ottens, the Dutch engineer credited with inventing the audio cassette tape, has died aged 94.

An estimated 100 billion cassette tapes have been sold around the world since they were introduced in the 1960s.

Ottens’ invention transformed the way people listened to music, and there has even been a resurgence of the cassette in recent years.

The engineer died in his hometown of Duizel last weekend, his family announced on Tuesday.

Ottens became head of Philips’ product development department in 1960, where he and his team developed the cassette tape.

In 1963, it was presented at the Berlin Radio electronics fair and soon became a worldwide success.

Ottens struck a deal with Philips and Sony that saw his model confirmed as the patented cassette, after a number of Japanese companies reproduced similar tapes in a number of sizes.

On the 50th anniversary of its creation, he told Time magazine that it was a “sensation” from day one.

image captionBillions of cassette tapes have been sold around the world since their invention in the 1960s

Ottens was also involved in the development of the compact disk, and more than 200 billion of those have been sold worldwide to date.

In 1982, when Philips showed off a production CD player, Ottens said: “From now on, the conventional record player is obsolete”.

He retired four years later. When asked about his career, he said his biggest regret was that Sony and not Philips had created the iconic cassette tape player, the Walkman.

Cassette tapes have experienced an unlikely surge in popularity in recent years. A number of artists including Lady Gaga and The Killers have released their music on them.

According to the Official Charts Company in the UK, the sale of cassettes in the first half of 2020 increased by 103% compared to the same time period the previous year.

And in the US, according to Nielsen music, sales of cassette tapes grew by 23% in 2018 compared with the previous year.

Hamed Bakayoko: Ivory Coast’s PM dies.

The Prime Minister of Ivory Coast, Hamed Bakayoko, has died in a hospital in Germany, authorities say.

Bakayoko, who was receiving treatment for cancer, passed away on Wednesday, just days after his 56th birthday.

He was appointed prime minister in July, following the sudden death of his predecessor Amadou Gon Coulibaly.

President Alassane Ouattara described Mr Bakayoko as a “great statesman, an example to young people and a man of exemplary loyalty”.

PM Bakayoko

“Our country is in mourning,” said President Alassane Ouattara on Twitter.  “I have the immense sorrow to announce to you the death of Prime Minister Hamed Bakayoko this Wednesday, 10 March, in Germany following cancer”,  Ouattara said, adding, he was  “a great statesman, a model for our youth, a personality of great generosity and exemplary loyalty ”.

A transfer to Turkey, where there was talk of the Ivorian Prime Minister undergoing an emergency transplant, had also been considered for last Thursday. But doctors said he was no longer operable.

Bakayoko received treatment in France on February 18. In recent months, he had contracted coronavirus and malaria.

During his first stay in Paris at the end of January, he had performed a series of medical tests at the American Hospital without any precise diagnosis. Alassane Ouattara went to his bedside visited the prime minister on March 3 in Paris. During a dinner with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace, the Ivorian president expressed concern about the health of his prime minister.

A former media executive who turned to politics, he played a prominent mediation role in Ivory Coast’s civil war during the first decade of the century.

“He was a key player in the political game and a major player in reconciliation. It’s a true shame,” Issiaka Sangare, spokesman for the opposition Ivorian Popular Front told AFP news agency.

Aside from his role as prime minister, Mr Bakayoko was also the country’s defence minister.

Patrick Achi has been appointed as interim prime minister, while Tene Birahima Ouattara, a younger brother of the president, has been named interim defence minister.

A bill that will legalize the use of Cannabis– Marijuana has now been approved

Mexico’s lower house has approved a bill that would legalise the recreational use of cannabis.

It will now go to the Senate for a final vote, which President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s party is confident will pass.

Cannabis plant ☘️

This would make Mexico one of the world’s largest regulated markets for cannabis.

Mexico has struggled with a bloody war against powerful drug cartels, with violence killing thousands yearly.

Lawmakers voted in favour of the bill by 316 votes to 129. It had already been approved in the Senate in November but another vote is needed following some alterations by the lower house.

The legislation would let users with a permit carry up to 28g and grow as many as eight plants at home for personal use. At present, it is illegal to carry more than five grams.

It would also allow for other licences for the cultivation, transformation, research and export or import of cannabis, Reuters news agency reports.

Mr López Obrador has argued that the bill could help tackle the country’s powerful drug cartels.

One lawmaker from his Morena party told AFP news agency that the law would help to achieve peace.

However critics have argued that the bill could make marijuana more accessible to children. Others have questioned why Mexicans would be able to buy as much alcohol as they like, yet be liable for prosecution if they grow more than eight cannabis plants.

Should the bill be approved, Mexico would become the third country in the world, after Uruguay and Canada, to legalise cannabis for recreational use nationwide.

A number of foreign cannabis-growing companies from Canada and California are said to be interested in tapping into the market opportunity presented by the legislation.

Covid-19 infection rate soars in Brazil; Let neighbouring regions beware

Brazil has recorded 268,370 fatalities since the pandemic began

Brazil has exceeded 2,000 Covid-related deaths in a single day for the first time, as infection rates soar.

The country has the second highest death toll in the world, behind the US, with a total of 268,370 fatalities. Wednesday’s total was 2,286.

Experts warn the transmission rate is made worse by more contagious variants.

On Wednesday, former leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva hit out at President Jair Bolsonaro’s “stupid” decisions made during the pandemic.

Mr Bolsonaro, who was pictured wearing a mask for the first time in a month on Wednesday, has consistently sought to downplay the threat posed by the virus. Earlier this week he told people to “stop whining”.

The surge in cases has put health systems in most of Brazil’s largest cities under immense pressure, with many close to collapse, Brazil’s leading public health centre Fiocruz warns.

Margareth Dalcolmo, a doctor and researcher at Fiocruz said the country was “at the worst moment of the pandemic”.

“2021 is still going to be a very hard year,” she told AFP news agency.

The latest deaths mean Brazil has a rate of 128 deaths per 100,000 population – 11th highest amongst 20 of the worst affected countries in the world. The highest rates are in the Czech Republic with 208 deaths per 100,000 people and the UK with 188 deaths per 100,000 people, according to Johns Hopkins University in the US.

Thursday is the anniversary of a pandemic being declared by the World Health Organization. Worldwide more than 118 million cases of the virus have been recorded, and more than 2.6 million deaths.

What’s the situation in Brazil?

On Wednesday, the country recorded 79,876 new cases, the third highest number in a single day. A surge in cases in recent days has been attributed to the spread of a highly contagious variant of the virus – named P1 – which is thought to have originated in the Amazon city of Manaus.

A total of 2,286 people died with the virus on Wednesday.

According to Fiocruz, 15 state capitals have intensive care units (ICUs) that are at more than 90% capacity including Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

Reports say the capital Brasilia has now reached full ICU capacity, while two cities – Porto Alegre and Campo Grande – have exceeded capacity.

In its report, the institute warned that figures point to the “overload and even collapse of health systems”.

Brazilian epidemiologist Dr Pedro Hallal told the BBC’s Outside Source TV programme: “If we do not start vaccinating the population here very soon, it will become a massive tragedy.”

Dr Hallal, who works in Rio Grande do Sul, said people felt “abandoned by the federal government”.

Mr Bolsonaro has belittled the risks posed by the virus from the start of the pandemic. He has also opposed quarantine measures taken at a regional level, arguing that the damage to the economy would be worse than the effects of the virus itself.

Former leader Lula, in his first speech since corruption convictions against him were annulled, told people not to follow “stupid” decisions by Mr Bolsonaro and to “get vaccinated”. Mr Bolsonaro said the criticism was unjustified.

What do we know about the Brazil variant?

Preliminary data suggests the P1 variant could be up to twice as transmittable as the original version of the virus.

It also suggests that the new variant could evade immunity built up by having had the original version of Covid. The chance of reinfection is put at between 25% and 60%.

image captionThe new coronavirus variant first detected in Brazil has led to a surge in deaths in the country

Last week, the Fiocruz Institute said P1 was just one of several “variants of concern” that have become dominant in six of eight states studied by the Rio-based organisation.

“This information is an atomic bomb,” said Roberto Kraenkel, of the Covid-19 Brazil Observatory, told the Washington Post newspaper.

World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has described the situation in Brazil as “very concerning” and warned of a possible regional spillover.

Covid-19 cases are collapsing Health Systems in Brazil

Health systems in most of Brazil’s largest cities are close to collapse due to Covid-19 cases, a report by the country’s Fiocruz institute warns.

The Rio de Janeiro-based institute said more than 80% of intensive care unit (ICU) beds are occupied in the capitals of 25 of Brazil’s 27 states.

On Tuesday the country recorded 1,972 Covid deaths, a new daily record.

Brazil has recorded more than 266,000 deaths and 11 million cases since the pandemic began.

It has the second highest number of deaths in the world after the US and the third highest number of confirmed cases.

According to Fiocruz, 15 state capitals have ICUs that are at more than 90% capacity including Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia and São Paulo.

Two cities – Porto Alegre and Campo Grande – have exceeded ICU capacity.

In its report it warned that figures pointed to the “overload and even collapse of health systems”.

“The fight against Covid-19 was lost in 2020 and there is not the slightest chance of reversing this tragic circumstance in the first half of 2021,” Fiocruz epidemiologist Jesem Orellana said, quoted by AFP news agency.

“The best we can do is hope for the miracle of mass vaccination or a radical change in the management of the pandemic.

“Today, Brazil is a threat to humanity and an open-air laboratory where impunity in management seems to be the rule.”

Last week experts told Valor Economic newspaper that deaths would soon surpass 2,000 a day. They warned that the only way to avoid this was if the federal government took over national coordination of the fight against the virus, recommending lockdowns, the use of masks and a mass vaccination drive.

More than eight million people have had their first vaccination dose so far, representing just over 4% of the population.

On Tuesday, the country also recorded more than 70,000 cases, a 38% increase on last week, according to local media. The recent rise has been attributed to the spread of a highly contagious variant of the virus thought to have originated in the Amazon city of Manaus.

Despite this, President Jair Bolsonaro has continued to downplay the threat posed by the virus.

Earlier this week he told people to “stop whining”. Speaking at an event, he said: “How long are you going to keep crying about it? How much longer will you stay at home and close everything? No-one can stand it anymore. We regret the deaths, again, but we need a solution.”

A number of quarantine measures have been taken by regional governors, which Mr Bolsonaro has opposed, arguing that the collateral damage to the economy will be worse than the effects of the virus itself.

In Over 20 Years That I Have Lived In Oyo, No Crime Has Been Traced To Me—Wakili

The Fulani leader, Iskilu Wakili, who was arrested by members of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) in Kajola, Ibarapa area of Oyo state on Sunday, has denied being involved in criminality.

Wakili

Speaking at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, Ibadan, Wakili challenged his accusers to come out in the open with their claims.

He said he has never been involved in crime since he has been staying in Oyo for over 20 years.

Wakili said he was at home on Sunday when he heard women among his household shouting that some armed men were approaching his house.

“Two days after my return from hospital (in Cotonou, Republic of Benin), I was lying down because I was ill and suddenly some women came and started shouting that armed OPC men had come looking for me.

“I asked them to flee but I could not run because I was sick. Two men later came and picked me from where I was lying down, they threw me in their vehicle naked. I fainted many times before they drove me to the police station in Igboora. From there we were taken to SCID, Ibadan.

“I am not a criminal, my children are not criminals. I don’t know anything about kidnapping or any crime. I have many cows and I know they stray into farms at times but I don’t have criminal records anywhere and this can be investigated. After they took me away from my home, a woman, Tande, was killed.”

Wakili also narrated how he paid ransom before his children who were abducted last year were released.

He said: “Sometime last year, two of my children were kidnapped and I paid millions of naira as ransom before they were released. I am not a kidnapper.

After pledging loyalty to a fraternity, a university student in the US lost his life

A university student in the US state of Ohio has died after alleged hazing at a college fraternity’s initiation ceremony.

Stone Foltz, 20, was made to drink a “copious amount of alcohol”, his family’s lawyer told US media.

Hazing is a tradition where people pledge their loyalty by doing something painful, humiliating or dangerous.

Mr Foltz is the second student in as many weeks to die following a so-called frat party in the US.

Adam Oakes, a 19-year-old student at Virginia Commonwealth University, was found dead on 27 February after attending a fraternity party.

Hazing is illegal in most US states, including Ohio, and police are investigating what happened on the night of the party.

Mr Foltz was a second-year business student at Bowling Green State University (BGSU), and a new member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.

The university has suspended the fraternity and has warned people not to speculate on social media.

Family lawyer Sean Alto said the death was “a tragedy”.

“We are actively investigating the facts of the case and will be interviewing witnesses and gathering information to figure out exactly what happened,” he said in a statement.

“Investigations involving hazing are complex and take time, but the Foltz family will eventually know the truth”.

US media report that Mr Foltz was at an event organised by a chapter of the fraternity on Thursday night.

Mr Alto said that other members of the fraternity took Mr Foltz home afterwards. However, concerned about how drunk he was, his roommates called an ambulance in the early hours of Friday morning.

He was in a critical condition in hospital for two days before dying on Sunday.

Mr Alto said the student’s organs have been donated “so that others may have a second chance at life”.

BGSU tweeted on Saturday that it had placed the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity on “interim suspension for alleged hazing activity”, and that it would review the “short and long-term future of fraternity and sorority life at BGSU”.

Pi Kappa Alpha said it was “horrified and outraged” by Stone Foltz’s death, and that it has a “zero-tolerance policy towards… bullying hazing”.

There are more than 200 chapters of Pi Kappa Alpha across the US and abroad, and Mr Foltz was part of the Delta Beta Chapter.

Hazing is banned in many US states, but it remains an ongoing issue at college campuses.

In Ohio hazing is classed as a fourth-degree misdemeanour, punishable with 30 days in jail or a fine of up to $250 (£180)
