Customs breaks into Ibadan shops, carts away truckloads of foreign rice

Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Federal Operation Unit (FOU) Zone A, in the early hours of Saturday, broke into shops at the Oja Oba Market in Ibadan, and carted away truckloads of foreign bags of rice

Ripples Nigeria gathered that the officers who broke into the shops and warehouses in the market took away no fewer than eight truckloads ofΒ bags of rice.

Meanwhile, this is coming barely a month after the operatives of the service carried out a similar operation at Bodija Market, in Ibadan.

In an interview with newsmen, in Ibadan, the Public Relations Officer of NCS, FOU Zone A, Theophilus Duniya, confirmed Saturday’s operation, noting that the act, which established the service empowered it to break into any shop or warehouse where it suspects contraband items were stocked.

Yes, an operation was carried out at the market. I cannot ascertain the numbers of bags of rice that were evacuated presently.

β€œNormally after an interception, examinations are conducted where the bags are counted to ascertain the number.

”As I speak with you, am yet to get those information but I can confirm to you that there was an operation and some bags of rice were evacuated.

β€œThe act establishing the service empowers men and officers of the service to break into any shop or warehouse upon reasonable suspicion of prohibited items stocked therein, with or without warrant,” Duniya said.

Popular Nollywood actress, Foluke Daramola, says she will not allow her son represent Nigeria if he becomes a professional footballer despite his eligibility.

Oluwapelumi Salako, Daramola’s 13-year-old son is already aspiring to become a footballer but his dream of one day representing Nigeria may be on the line due to the insecurity in the country.

Daramola made this assertion during an interactive session on The PUNCH’s online sports talk show, Stars Talk Football.

β€œI might not (allow my son to represent Nigeria) because at the end of the day, there is a lot of insecurity in the country.

β€œThe moment a child comes to play in Nigeria, a lot of things are at stake. Even as a mother, the moment he starts playing in leagues abroad, then the parents may become a target of kidnap. I can vividly remember that they kidnapped a player Mikel Obi’s father. So, because of the insecurity in the country, I will definitely say no.

Asides from her WAEC,Β she also aced her IELTS, SAT, IGSSE with 99 percent success.

It still feels pretty unbelievable. I applied to so many schools because I didn’t even think any school would accept me,” Victory told CNN.

Born to Nigerian parents, mother Chika Yinka-Banjo, a senior lecturer at the University of Lagos, and Father Adeyinka Banjo, a private sector procurement and supply chain executive, Victory was given potential full scholarships from the Ivy League schools, Yale College, Princeton University, Harvard College, and Brown University.

The intelligent young girl rose to national prominence in late 2020 when she revealed that she scored 9 As in her West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) after her result was initially withheld by the exam body.

Popular singer, Teniola Apata, aka Teni D’Entertainer, has advised fellow entertainers to invest part of their earnings or go broke in future.

Speaking during an Instagram live session with media personality, Adesope Olajide, she said, β€œOne of the greatest artistes of all time, Micheal Jackson, went broke. All this love people are saying that they love you, enjoy it, but don’t get it twisted. Be smart. Prepare for your future. Save and invest. As we speak, having money in a Nigerian bank is as useless as paper. Naira is going to depreciate and one’s money is going to be useless. So, look for ways to invest and where to invest your money in order to multiply it. Your life (as a celebrity) is not like anybody’s life. You cannot go back to the job market. Even if you don’t care, people would look down on you. As an artiste, one has to prepare. One’s future is very important.

β€œArtistes have a time frame (to be in the spotlight). Don’t forget that. When it is your time, use it well and prepare for your future. At least, have a house and make sure you have something that is bringing you money. You should not go around begging, so that people would not say, β€˜Let’s donate for this person’.”

Teni also recalled that Davido had predicted that she would turn out to be a huge star a long time ago. Explaining why Davido was the only artiste she featured on her debut album, β€˜Wondaland’, she said, β€œDavido is such an amazing guy. He is special. I had known David right from Atlanta, United States of America. I remember that I met him in a studio and he said to me, β€˜Go back to Nigeria, you are going to be a huge star’. He motivated me with those words and it was just right for me to do something with him. He was already a star at the time. Imagine Davido telling me, β€˜Do your thing. You can actually do this thing’.”

Meet the Personality of the month of April

Adichie was born in the city of Enugu in Nigeria, and grew up as the fifth of six children in an Igbo family in the university town of Nsukka in Enugu State. Her father, James Nwoye Adichie, worked as a professor of statistics at the University of Nigeria while her mother, Grace Ifeoma, was the university’s first female registrar.
The family lost almost everything during the Nigerian Civil War, including both maternal and paternal grandfathers. Her family’s ancestral village is in Abba in Anambra State.

In an interview published in the Financial Times in July 2016, Adichie revealed that she had a baby daughter. In a profile of Adichie, published in The New Yorker in June 2018, Larissa MacFarquhar wrote, “the man she ended up marrying in 2009 was almost comically suitable: a Nigerian doctor who practiced in America, whose father was a doctor and a friend of her parents.” Adichie is a Catholic and was raised Catholic as a child, though she considers her views, especially those on feminism, to sometimes conflict with her religion.

EDUCATION
Adichie completed her secondary education at the University of Nigeria Secondary School, Nsukka, where she received several academic prizes. She studied medicine and pharmacy at the University of Nigeria for a year and a half. During this period, she edited The Compass, a magazine run by the university’s Catholic medical students.

As a black African in America, Adichie was suddenly confronted with what it meant to be a person of colour in the United States. Race as an idea became something that she had to navigate and learn.
She writes about this in hernovel Americanah.

Adichie was a Hodder fellow at Princeton University during the 2005–2006 academic year. In 2008, she was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship. Police assures Osun community of peace after protests against herdsmen molestations

The Osun State Commissioner of Police, Olawale Olokode, has assured residents of Otan-Ile in Obokun Local Government Council Area that he will ensure that peace returns to the town permanently.

This is as he also promised that the Nigerian Police will work in the interest of the town and ensure that justice is served.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola made this known while confirming to DAILY POST the recent protest against molestation by Fulani herdsmen by residents of Otan-Ile town.

She revealed that the initial tension has been doused adding that the Divisional Police Officer, Ibokun has been to the palace of the traditional ruler and after a meeting with the concerned parties, peace has finally been achieved.

Meanwhile, the member representing Obokun State Constituency in the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewumi Adeyemi had earlier condemned the violent activities of the herdsmen and commended the bravery of the youths and women who had trooped out en masse to peacefully to express their grievances.

In a press release he personally signed, the legislator stated that the sad and avoidable development is what the people were coping with.

In his words, β€œProfound and bold steps must be taken to rescue the situation. The protest is sending a message of survival, peace, and safety.

β€œRecall that this is not the first time this is happening in Obokun State Constituency. I, therefore, call on the Federal and State Governments including all security agencies to help secure our communities and rescue our people from being casualties of banditry, kidnapping among others.

β€œI have contacted some leaders including members of the ancient town where I assured them of the government’s intervention to resolve the issue.

β€œI am using this opportunity to call for calm and appeal to our people to remain peaceful as security agencies continue to do everything within their powers to keep our community safe.”

A community member, Magbo Christian Chikezie stated that all the people wanted was to be safe as the majority of them living in the town were farmers.

He also complained that the king has not acted accordingly to assure the town’s people of their safety and douse the tension.

Chikezie disclosed that it all started when a Fulani herdsman was allegedly shot somewhere and other Fulanis claimed that a person from Otan-Ile was responsible for the shooting.

β€œThey went and reported the case to the police and they came and started arresting people on the farm, and those on the way to farm on the orders of the king.

β€œEach of the arrested persons was bailed with N30,000 and the king still insisted that they should pay the Fulani for damages.

β€œThis is where the people got angry that enough was enough.”

DAILY POST recalls that on Wednesday, 28th of April, 2021, residents of Otan-Ile took to the streets of the town in protest against alleged molestations from Fulani herdsmen.

Students and pupils of public schools in the town boycotted their classes in order to join the protest.

Will Smith’s daughter, Willow, comes out as polyamorous (VIDEO)

Willow Smith, the daughter of Hollywood actor and singer, Will Smith has come out as polyamorous to her mum, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and grandmother on The Red Table Talk.

The 20-year-old daughter of the American actors opened up on Wednesday during a discussion with her mother and grandmother.

Specifically, polyamory is the practice of engaging in multiple romantic relationships, with the consent of all the people involved.

However, Willow noted that she can’t see herself β€œgoing past two partners.”

Willow said on her mum’s Facebook show Red Table Talk:

With polyamory, I feel like the main foundation is the freedom to be able to create a relationship style that works for you and not just stepping into monogamy because that’s what everyone around you says is the right thing to do.

β€œSo I was like, how can I structure the way that I approach relationships with that in mind? Also, doing research into polyamory, the main reasons why monogamous relationships – or why marriage – why divorces happen is infidelity.”

Willow, who practices ethical non-monogamy, received support from her mother but was met with resistance from her grandmother.

ITF trains 250 youths, empowers them with essential tools in Ibadan, Osogbo

Established solely for the purpose of human capital development and empowerment, Industrial Training Fund, ITF continues to grow strong in its drive to empower youths through various empowerment programmes across the nation.

ITF has over the years made tremendous impact in generating a pool of manpower in different sectors of the economy in Nigeria by designing programmes that equip individuals with new skills, essential tools of trade and empowerment so they can become employers of labour, attain financial stability, drive development and eventually assume leadership of the nation.

The Director General in his keynote address which was delivered by the Area Manager, Mr. Peter Dalyop encouraged participants to ensure they don’t rest on their oars but rather put in more efforts to hone the skills learnt so they can showcase themselves and Nigeria to the world. He further advised them to register their business as soon as possible because business registration has many great benefits which include corporate account opening and access to loans.

He reminded them that jobs are hard to come by in Nigeria at the moment regardless of your qualification and people should start something with what they learnt instead of staying idle and waiting for jobs that are not there.

Participants were further advised by other speakers to be creative and innovative in their vocation so they could stand out.

The empowerment programme cuts across various sectors including fashion designing, crop production and cosmetology.

Talking points at the event include how to start a business, expanding a business, managing people and much more.

Parents of Nigeria Kidnap Victims Plead for Government Help

KADUNA, Nigeria (Reuters) – When Linda Peter last spoke to her daughter, the brief phone call left her relieved the teenager was alive but distraught because she could not pay any ransom demanded.

Peter’s 18-year-old daughter, Jennifer, was among 39 students abducted by gunmen on March 11 from a forestry college in the northwestern Nigerian state of Kaduna. The captors, who called from the teenager’s phone, threatened to kill the male captives and force females into marriage, but did not specify the ransom sum sought.

“The government is not doing anything to help these children,” said Peter, a widow and mother of five who sells vegetables for a living but has not worked since her daughter was taken. “We don’t have anything,” she said.

Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai has repeatedly said his state government will not negotiate with “bandits”, as the marauding criminal gangs are known, or pay ransoms.

Kidnapping for ransom has become an industry in restive northern Nigerian states where over 700 people have been abducted at education institutions since December. President Muhammadu Buhari in February told state governments that “rewarding” such crimes with money and vehicles, could “boomerang disastrously”.

Peter, faced with the prospect of losing her daughter, said the government must do more to free the students.

“I’m angry with them,” she said through tears of the Kaduna government, at a meeting of relatives whose loved ones were taken in the same raid.

Kaduna state’s security commissioner, responding to the comments, referred Reuters to an April 16 statement.

“The governor will continue to work hard until banditry is contained, without succumbing to emotional blackmail and gradual politicization of the unfortunate situation,” it said.

Much of the fear felt by Peter and other worried parents at the meeting, held on Wednesday, stems from the killing of five students who were among around 17 people kidnapped on April 21 from Greenfield University, elsewhere in the state.

Catherine Saleh, whose 29-year-old son Stephen Shuani was taken from the forestry college, said she too had received calls from the kidnappers, initially demanding 500 million naira ($1.31 million) – an unattainable sum for the teacher with a 100,000 naira monthly salary – before reducing that to 50 million.

“We cannot raise that money,” she said. “If I had the money, I wouldn’t send my child to that school.”

The men purporting to be the captors told her to call government officials to demand they negotiate with them, but she does not know anyone to contact.

“These children are between life and death. They can shoot them at any time,” Saleh said.

On the same day as the meeting, Dorathy Yohanna, one of the dead Greenfield students, was buried.

Her father, Yohanna Meck, said he hoped state officials would learn from the tragedy.

“Government should be proactive, they should not just keep quiet,” he told reporters after the funeral. “They should be proactive to help the situation because it’s getting out of hand.”

β€œBuhari Should Be Impeached If He Doesn’t Want To Resign”- Fr Mbaka

Worried by the alarming spate of insecurity in the country, the Catholic Priest and Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry, Enugu, Fr Ejike Mbaka, has called for the impeachment of President Buhari.

Speaking at the Adoration Ministry in Enugu recently, the clergyman wondered how the President will maintain grave silence despite the wanton killings across the country.

β€œLet me tell you; if it is in a civilized country, by now, President Buhari would have resigned with what is happening. Nigerians are crying because there’s no security in the country, the House of Representatives should impeach the president if he doesn’t want to resign.

A good coach cannot watch his players be defeated when he has players sitting down on the bench. It is either Buhari resigns by himself or he will be impeached.

This statement is too mysterious and supernatural, I know many people will begin to fight it, saying did you not pray for Buhari? Did Samuel not anoint Saul? Am I the creator of Buhari? God created him, Nigerians supported him because he did well sometimes. But now, how can people be dying and the chief security officer of the country will be sitting down without making any comment? Gunmen attacking people everywhere.

House of Representatives should impeach the President if he doesn’t want to resign. If the members of these two houses do not want to impeach him and they want to begin to fight Fr. Mbaka, something worse than what they never imagine would happen to the members of the House of Senate and the members of the House of Representatives. Disaster is coming”he said

Ogun Poly shut over security concerns

Authorities of the Gateway (ICT) Polytechnic, Saapade, Ogun State have shut the institution following the worsening security challenges around the polytechnic.

The institution also indefinitely put on hold the ongoing semester examination until β€œthe security situation improves.”

The Nation gathered the school was shut on Wednesday as students’ battle with robbery and rape cases around their residences took a frightening dimension in the last few weeks.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) had threatened showdown with the Government over abduction and robbing of students in some institutions in the state.

Chairman of the association, Kehinde Simeon, had while speaking with reporters on Tuesday, cited Gateway (ICT) Polytechnic, Sapaade and Igbesa as examples where students grapple with fears of kidnapping and robbery.

He asked the government to address the challenges within seven days or risk mass action.

The Acting Registrar of the Gateway Polytechnic, Saapade, J O Popoola, ordered students to proceed on mid -semester break immediately until the security situation improves.

The internal memo dated April 28, reads: β€œIn line with the decision of the management, all students are to proceed on mid semester break with effect from the close of work on Wednesday, 28th of April, 2021.

β€œThis is due to the security challenges around the students residences. Please note that the ongoing examination shall continue immediately the security situation improves.

β€œMeanwhile, all students should vacate their residences and go home. Any student that stays behind does so at his or her own risk.

β€œThis is for your information and strict compliance.”

It was learnt two members of local vigilance group have been arrested in connection with the growing security challenges around the institution with some of them allegedly detained at the Police Command Headquarters, Eleweran.

But Ogun police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the security situation in the area has not β€œdegenerated to level of asking the students to go home.”

He told The Nation: β€œThey might ask them to go home for any other reason.
