NSCDC arrests two men with suspected adulterated kerosene in Niger

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested a driver and his companion for carrying 45,000 litres of suspected adulterated kerosene in Niger State.

The NSCDC Commandant in the state, Haruna Zurmi, who disclosed this to journalists on Sunday in Minna, said the two men were arrested with an articulated truck carrying the product along Suleja-Kaduna Road on August 15.

Zurmi said the suspects were conveying the product to Kaduna State.

He listed the suspects as Salisu Idris (45) and Bashir Mohammed (25).

According to him, the suspects could not present the waybill but presented a paper issued on August 12, 2020, when they were accosted by the NSCDC operatives.

The commandant said: “The corps personnel who were on a routine patrol at about 2:00 p.m. on August 15, intercepted the articulated vehicle marked ABJ 988 XK, containing 45,000 litres of suspected adulterated kerosene without a genuine waybill.

“We have directed that a laboratory test should be conducted on the product. We have since begun an intensive investigation with a view to charging the suspects to court after the investigation.

“The corps will continue with our aggressive patrol on all the major highways in a bid to check the activities of vehicles conveying adulterated products.

“Security matters should not be left in the hands of security personnel alone.

“There is need for all sundry to complement the efforts of personnel with vital intelligence information that will help the security agents in the arrest of miscreants in our society.”

Kaduna govt confirms killing of Senator Na’Allah’s son

The Kaduna State government on Sunday night confirmed the killing of Capt. Abdulkarim Ibn Na’Allah, the son of the Senator representing Kebbi South Senatorial District, Bala Na’Allah.

The deceased, a trained pilot, was killed by suspected bandits at his Malali residence in the Government Reservation Area (GRA), Kaduna North local government area of the state.

The state’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, confirmed the incident in a statement in Kaduna.

He said: “In what appears to be a case of culpable homicide, the deceased was found in a bedroom of his residence Malali, Kaduna North LGA, apparently after having been strangled with a rope.

A vehicle was stolen from his parking lot by the assailants.

In another incident, armed bandits killed one Ahmadu Tanko at Janwuriya, Kajuru LGA.

“Governor Nasir El-Rufai expressed deep sadness at the reports and prayed for the repose of the souls of the victims, and sent his heartfelt condolences to their families.

“The governor urged security agencies to conduct vigorous investigations towards apprehending the perpetrators of the attacks.

“Security agencies are investigating the incidents.”

Falana charges Nigerian govt to secure release of abducted NDA personnel

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has charged the Federal Government to secure the release of the military officer abducted during an attack on the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna.

Gunmen had on August 24 killed two military officers and abducted one other during an attack on the NDA in the Afaka area of the state.

Falana, who is also the interim Chairman of Alliance on Surviving COVID-19 and Beyond (ASCAB), made the call in a statement on Sunday.

He asked President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to unmask the killers and bring the perpetrators to book to serve as a deterrent to others.

He said the attack on the military base had confirmed that nowhere is safe for Nigerians.

The lawyer said: “The Alliance on Surviving COVID-19 and Beyond (ASCAB) strongly condemns the last week’s invasion of the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna, the brutal killing of two officers and the abduction of another officer by a group of terrorists.

“By attacking the military institution, the dangerous criminal elements had wanted to prove that nowhere is safe in Nigeria.

“To prove the criminals wrong the Federal Government should ensure the immediate release of the abducted officer and proceed to arrest the criminal elements who committed the heinous crimes.”

LASEMA, NSCDC, others avert pipeline explosion in Lagos

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) on Friday averted another fire outbreak in the Ikotun area of the state.

The incident was caused by pipeline leakages in the area.

The Director-General of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the incident in a statement, blamed the incident on the activities of vandals.

He said: “Upon arrival at the incident scene, Omoboriowo Street, Pipeline Bus Stop, Igando-Ikotun Road, Igando, it was observed that a very large volume of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) was gushing out of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) pipeline.

“Further investigation revealed that the heavy flow of PMS was caused by suspected pipeline vandalism and bunkering in the early hours of August 27.

Presently, there is no loss of life and property, serious sensitisation, public education and awareness is ongoing in the entire community.

“This is to avoid any form of open flame and burning through explosion or any other secondary incident. The entire area had become highly vulnerable due to the heavy flow of the highly flammable PMS.

“Responders at the incident scene are LASEMA, LASEMA Response Unit (LRU), Lagos State Fire Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), NNPC, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC).

“Three fire trucks are currently on ground, while the NNPC maintenance team is working to stop the flow in order to commence repairs. Operations are still ongoing.”

BREAKING: Veteran actor Victor Olaotan is dead

Veteran actor and former Tinsel’ star, Victor Olaotan, popularly known as Big Daddy, has died.

His wife, Julia Olatan, confirmed the death to The PUNCH on Friday.

In an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, Olatan, who had been relentlessly seeking support for the actor, said her husband died on Thursday night in Lagos State.

Julia appreciated The PUNCH and donors for helping her husband while battling for his life in a Turkish hospital.

“Victor Olaotan has passed on, I don’t take the help rendered us for granted. Sadly, Olaotan had to come back to Nigeria because we could no more raise the money to continue treatment, so the hospital sent him back. I’m grateful for my husband’s life and I know all is well.

“Despite the challenges, God has been good to me and my family. He was there for five years,” she said tearfully.

The deceased had suffered a traumatic brain injury after a ghastly car accident in October 2016.

The veteran actor had celebrated his 69th birthday on Wednesday, February 17, 2021, in a Turkish hospital battling with the effects of a traumatic brain injury he suffered after the ghastly car accident in October 2016.

Julia and some other ace actors had been soliciting support on Olaotan’s behalf.

In 2019, billionaire businessman and philanthropist, Femi Otedola, donated N30m to the actor.

Julia, who often spoke with her husband via video calls, had said whenever they spoke, she could see that he was “fighting for his life”.

Man impersonates EFCC, defrauds ‘Yahoo boys’ of N38 million

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested one Ladeji Kelvin Babatunde for obtaining money under false pretense.

He is reported to have allegedly obtained over N38 million from suspected internet fraudsters commonly known as Yahoo boys, while posing as an EFCC operative.

Babatunde had boasted that he would prevent their arrest by the commission.

An EFCC statement on Facebook reads; “A four-bedroom uncompleted apartment located at Ikola Road, Alagbado, Lagos, which was developed with the proceeds of the fraud, was recovered from him”.

Babatunde will be charged to court after the completion of investigation.

Police kills four hoodlums in Osun

Police operatives in Osun State on Wednesday killed four hoodlums at the Ilesha area of the state.

The spokesperson for the state police command, Yemisi Opalola, who confirmed the development in a statement in Osogbo on Thursday, said the gunmen ambushed a vehicle conveying murder suspects to a correctional centre in the town.

According to her, the vehicle was attacked after it developed a fault at Osunjela River along the Osogbo-Ilesa Road.

She said auto mechanics were working on the vehicle when the criminals, emerged from bushes on motorcycles, and shot sporadically in a bid to free the suspects.

Opalola said: “In the ensuing gun duel between the gunmen and the police, the hoodlums abandoned their motorcycle and fled into the bush.

Three locally made guns, one pump action gun; two cut-to-size barrel guns with fourteen live cartridges were recovered from the assailants.

“Three out of four of the hoodlums died from gunshot wounds at a hospital in Osogbo while the body of the fourth suspect was recovered from the bush.

“When we combed the bush for possible arrest of the fleeing suspects, the dead body of one of the attackers was recovered with bullets wounds.

“While searching his body, two live cartridges and a piece of paper with an incantation written in the Yoruba language with the names of the perpetrators were found in his pocket.”

Ondo Assembly urges resident doctors to suspend strike

The Ondo State House of Assembly on Thursday appealed to the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) to suspend their ongoing nationwide strike in the interests of Nigerians.

The resident doctors embarked on an indefinite nationwide strike on August 2 over grievances that include the delayed payment of salaries and allowances.

The lawmakers made the call during a debate on the matter at the plenary.

They asked the striking doctors to toe the line of peace, and return to work.

The Speaker of the House, Bamidele Oleyelogun, stressed that the NARD’s dispute with the Federal Government had lingered and urged the association to end the strike.

Oleyogun called for a tripartite meeting involving medical personnel, the executive and the legislative arms of government in a bid to resolve the dispute.

According to Dailystar, Jessica lost consciousness and was airlifted to the hospital, where she underwent surgery and was left with permanent scarring.

CHOLERA: Kogi confirms eight deaths, 129 cases

The Kogi State government on Wednesday confirmed 129 cases of cholera and eight deaths in the state.

The state’s Epidemiologist, Dr. Austin Ojotu, who disclosed this in a statement in Lokoja, said the cholera outbreak was recorded in Kogi, Bassa, Lokoja, Ankpa, and Kabba -Bunu local government areas of the state.

He added that the cases were recorded between February and August.

Ojotu said: “Seven communities were affected in the aforementioned council areas with 129 cases.

66 cases were recorded in three communities in Kogi, Lokoja, and Ankpa local government areas where all the eight deaths were also recorded.

These are border communities with hard to reach terrains.

“It is important to mention at this point that most of the deaths occurred before the reports got to the local government/state authorities.

“Our findings also revealed that majority of the deaths in all the outbreaks occurred at home.”

Actress Destiny Etiko, colleagues survive ghastly auto crash

Nollywood actress, Destiny Etiko and several of her colleagues on Wednesday survived a ghastly auto accident while returning from late actor, Stanley Okoro’s funeral service in Owerri, Imo State.

The talented Okoro died from suspected food poisoning on August 11 and the deceased’s colleagues went to his hometown to pay their last respect.

A candlelight service was held for the deceased on Tuesday, and he was laid to rest in Owerri on Wednesday.

On their way back, the car conveying the Nollywood players collided with a Peace Mass Transit bus.

Suspected armed robbers attack bullion van, kill driver, policeman in Ondo

Gunmen suspected to be armed robbers on Wednesday evening attacked a bullion van in Ore, Odigbo local government area of Ondo State and killed two people.

An eyewitness told journalists that the victims were the driver of the bullion van and a policeman attached to the vehicle.

He said: “The dare-devil armed robbers opened fire on the bullion van which was carrying an undisclosed amount of money and the police escort car.

“The bullion van driver and a policeman were shot dead in the process while the undisclosed amount of money in the bullion van was carted away by the gunmen after the attack

The spokesperson of the state police command, Funmilayo Odunlami, who confirmed the incident, said police operatives are on the trail of the assailants.

She urged people of the state with useful information to assist the police in the investigation that would lead to the arrest of the hoodlums.

Odunlami said: “Yes, I can confirm to you that the driver of the bullion van and a police officer died in the attack, but the police had launched an investigation to trail the gunmen.

“We urge residents with concrete information to come forward, we don’t need them to drop their names but give us useful information that will lead to the arrest of the gunmen.

Angry youths storm Plateau Assembly with bodies of indigenes slain by bandits

Protesting youths on Wednesday stormed the Plateau state House of Assembly following the killing of persons by bandits in the state.

On Tuesday, armed men attacked Yelwa Zangam community in Jos North Local Government Area of the state.

During the attack, the gunmen were said to have killed over 30 people and injured several others while setting their houses ablaze.

Youths on Wednesday, put the bodies of the slain victims in a truck and took them to the state Assembly and demanded to see the speaker.

The group later marched to the government house.

A man has been punished for allegedly stealing money from his grandmother in Soshanguve community in Pretoria, South Africa.
It was gathered that members of the community beat him up and afterwards tied him to the tree on Wednesday morning, August 25.
It was also learnt that another alleged thief, pictured in the third slide , was caught stealing electrical cables by community members and also tied to the tree few days ago.
