Oyetola explains why Osun opted out of LAUTECH joint ownership

Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun has explained why the state opted out of the joint ownership of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso.

Oyetola spoke in Abuja on Saturday while fielding questions at NAN Forum, a special interview programme of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

According to him, the decision was reached after his government weighed the options and discovered that it was more profitable to invest in its own new university than continue with the joint ownership with Oyo State.

The governor also cited the huge financial commitment and lopsidedness of faculties of the university as some of the reasons it exited the joint ownership.

LAUTECH founded as Oyo State University of Technology in April 1990 was jointly owned by Osun and Oyo States after the creation of the former on Aug. 27, 1991.

Ripples Nigeria had reported that the National Universities Commission (NUC) on Nov. 20, 2020, announced the end of the joint ownership with the university ceded to Oyo State, while the College of Health Technology was transferred to Osun.

Giving insight into the development, the governor said: “ Even in marriage there is room for divorce, so you weigh your options.

“Don’t forget that we inherited LAUTECH because it was established at the time Osun was part of Oyo State.

”It was never a question of two states sitting down together saying we want to establish a university, no, we inherited it.

At the time, they could not have broken it into two and say Osun take this, Oyo take that.

Sometimes when you have different political parties being in charge of different states, there are always issues surrounding policies and related matters.

“LAUTECH had been in crisis over the years, as far back as when Gov. (Olagunsoye) Oyinlola was in office with (Adebayo) Alao-Akala.

”They actually agreed to separate and there was a report to that effect. It was just at the point of implementation that the APC administration came in, so it was stalled.

“But I realised that the relationship was becoming a burden to Osun in the sense that we have our own university, which is Osun State University.

I had to be compelled to pay salaries of lecturers in LAUTECH, and even those of the teaching university located in Osogbo.

“Again, if you look at the issue of equitable distribution of the faculties, it was lopsided. Not less than nine were sited in Ogbomoso, for instance. We had only the School of Health in Osogbo.

“That doesn’t reflect truly the issue of joint ownership.

“I have the Osun State University to think about, at some point there was this issue of states not meeting their financial obligations.

”That puts so much pressure on our government, making it look as if we were the one not aligning or not making the university to develop.”

SERAP urges ICC to declare students’ abductions crime against humanity

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has petitioned the International Criminal Court (ICC) calling on the body to declare the incessant abductions of school children in the Northern parts of Nigeria, especially Zamfara State, as crimes against humanity.

SERAP also asked the ICC to investigate the closure of schools, and the persistent failure of Nigerian authorities at both the Federal and State levels, “to end the abductions considered as crimes against humanity within the jurisdiction of the ICC.”

In the petition signed by SERAP Deputy Director, Kolawale Oluwadare, dated September 4, and addressed to the QC, Prosecutor at the ICC, Karim A. A. Khan, the organisation urged the ICC to push for those suspected to be responsible and complicit in the commission of those serious crimes to be invited and tried.

The petition came following a string of abductions and closure of schools in parts of Nigeria, including the recent closure of schools in Zamfara State, after 73 students were abducted by bandits at the Government Secondary School, Kaya, in Maradun Local Government Area of the state.

Depriving children their right to education has severe consequences for their ability to access their fundamental rights,” the petition reads in part.

“The severe and lifelong harms that result from depriving children of the right to education satisfy the gravity of harm threshold under the Rome Statute.

“Investigating and declaring cases of abduction of Nigerian students and closure of schools, and the failure by the Nigerian authorities to provide safe and enabling learning environments as crimes against humanity would help to combat impunity, deter future human rights abuses, and improve access of the children to education.

The crime of abduction is not just a deprivation of a single fundamental human right, but a wholesale effort to re-engineer society and to deny children, including girls their human dignity and agency in all aspects of their lives.

“The persistent failure by Nigerian authorities to end the widespread and systemic abductions, and to provide safe and enabling learning environments for Nigerian children to enjoy their right to quality education amounts to crimes against humanity, which fall within the jurisdiction of the ICC.”

SERAP, therefore urged Khan, among others, to urgently commence an investigation proprio motu on the widespread and systematic problem of abductions of Nigerian students.

Northern Governors’ Wives say closure of schools over abductions not sustainable

The Northern Governors’ Wives Forum (NGWF) has condemned the incessant abductions of school children and the closure of schools in the region, but however, insisted that the zone cannot continue with the enforced closure of schools over abduction of pupils, as their children must go to school.

The NGWF, at a media parley with selected journalists in Abuja on Saturday, maintained that the continued shutting down of schools over bandits’ attacks cannot be sustained as it is just a short-term measure.

The Chairperson of the forum and wife of Kaduna State governor, Hadiza El-Rufai, who spoke at the event, tasked the federal and state governments in the North to do everything possible to defeat the bandits once and for all.

In a statement made available to Ripples Nigeria, Hajia El-Rufai said:

“I think what the state governments are already doing, like in Kaduna State and recently in Zamfara State, where they’ve closed all the schools, is a short-term solution and cannot be sustained because we must get our children to school.

But as it is now, it is important to keep our children safe.

“The long-term solution is to deal with the bandits; we can’t continue like this, something has to change.

“I believe that the President or the people that are supposed to do the right thing are doing the right thing; these things are not just as easy as they sound.

“I believe that in the last few weeks, the bandits have been really bombarded; they are under a lot of fire from our security agencies.

“So the long-term strategy is to defeat them, so that our children can go to school without feeling that they are in danger.”

Grazing routes will end farmers/herders conflict – Bagudu

The Kebbi State Governor, Atiku Bagudu, said on Thursday mapping out grazing routes would end the herdsmen/farmers’ conflict in the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari had last month approved the review of 368 grazing sites across 25 states in the country to identify the level of encroachment on the routes.

Bagudu, who featured in a Channels Television’s programme, Politics Today, said mapping of the grazing reserves would help the government to identify the scale of the problem.

He added that the President’s directive did not exclude the prospect of ranching.

He said: “The committee is to identify grazing routes and work with states and map them. It is not to recover grazing routes, it is to identify the scale of the problem.

Mr. President is interested in an audit of grazing reserves. It is a voluntary and collaborative thing with the states.

People say we have spoken about ranching. Yes, but what is a ranch? Ranching does not take place in the air, it takes place on a piece of land.

“Ranches are as big as grazing reserves. In some countries like Australia, some ranches are bigger than some Nigerian states.

“We have interest historically to make our farmers do better. That’s why we have all kinds of programs and extension services, so our farmers can do better. And it is a desirable public goal.

“So, historically, we have invested more in the farming sector to the disadvantage of both fishing and animal husbandry.

“We want to help the herders modernise so Nigeria can benefit and generate more value from this important sector.

If we can support those in the banking sector with N5trillion to save the banks from collapsing, I don’t think we are doing any disservice to support our farmers, support millions in the animal husbandry sector and support our fishing communities as well.

Kaduna bans inter-state transportation of livestock

The Kaduna State government on Thursday banned the transportation of livestock from the state to other states.

The state’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, who disclosed this in a statement in Kaduna, said the ban took immediate effect.

Aruwan also announced the suspension of activities at the Kawo weekly market in Kaduna North local government area of the state.

He added that the decision was taken after wide consultations and a thorough review of the security situation in the state.

He warned that the transportation of donkeys into the state has become a criminal offence and anyone found culpable would be prosecuted accordingly.

The commissioner said: “The government of Kaduna State wishes to highlight that the previous directives suspending weekly markets, and selling of petrol in jerry cans in Birnin Gwari, Giwa, Chikun, Igabi and Kajuru LGAs as well as the ban on the felling of trees for timber, firewood and charcoal, and other commercial purposes in Birnin Gwari, Kachia, Kajuru, Giwa, Chikun, Igabi, and Kauru LGAs, are still in force.

“Citizens are hereby informed that all these directives will be vigorously enforced by security agencies.”

Why I didn’t stay at home after sack from Buhari’s govt, says ex-power minister, Mamman

The former Minister of Power, Sale Mamman, has reacted to reports on his absence from home since he was sacked from the Federal Executive Council (FEC) by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The President sacked Mamman and his Agriculture and Rural Development counterpart, Sabo Nanono, on Wednesday.

Reports in some sections of the media claimed that the former minister landed in the hospital after he received the news of his sack.

However, in a chat with the Hausa Service of British Broadcasting Corporation, Mamman said he had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness since last weekend.

He said: “Even before the sack was announced, I have been seriously ill. I had not even gone to the office since earlier in the week.

So, on Wednesday and Thursday I also went back to the hospital for another round of check-up, and the doctor instructed that I needed some rest. So I remained at one place to rest.

“I found a serene and quiet environment to rest and take medication as recommended by the doctor. I didn’t stay at home because sympathisers are trooping to console me. This would prevent me from resting and convalescing on time. But I was also not hospitalised, and I didn’t faint as reported.”

The ex-minister revealed that President Buhari called him on Monday night to inform him of the sack.

He added: “Whether I am fired or not, I must step down in two years away.”

TBT With Trevor Noah @trevornoah

Trevor Noah, (born February 20, 1984, Johannesburg, South Africa), South African comedian, television host, political commentator, and author who was perhaps best known as the host (2015– ) of the American television series The Daily Show. He was also noted for his stand-up comedy shows, in which he often incorporated observations about growing up in South Africa

Noah’s mother was a Xhosa woman from South Africa, and his father was a white man from Switzerland. Noah was born under apartheid, and, because interracial relationships were illegal, his parents had to hide their relationship from authorities. Noah was raised by his mother and grandmother in Soweto, an urban area just outside Johannesburg that was set aside for Black people. Fearing for his safety, they sometimes had to hide Noah from the police because biracial children were often taken from their parents. When he was about 10 years old, apartheid ended.
In 2002 Noah had an uncredited bit part in an episode of the South African soap opera Isidingo. He then hosted an educational show on a family public television channel before hosting the radio show Noah’s Ark. When he was 22 years old, friends dared him to perform a comedy routine at a nightclub. He entertained the audience with humorous stories about his friends and his life. After that night Noah continued performing at comedy clubs, gaining more and more fans along the way. As his popularity increased in South Africa, he began hosting television shows—including a sports show and a dating game show—as well as major awards shows. In 2008 Noah appeared as a contestant on the reality dance competition show Strictly Come Dancing.

In 2009 Noah performed in his first solo comedy show, The Daywalker. The sold-out event was held in a 1,100-seat theatre in Johannesburg, and the DVD recording of the show became a best seller. He later hosted the television talk show Tonight with Trevor Noah (2010–11). In 2012 Noah performed a second solo show, The Racist, at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, in Scotland; he later toured with the show. Also in 2012 Noah, who had moved to the United States, became the first South African comedian to appear on the American television talk show The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. In 2013 Noah starred in the TV comedy special Trevor Noah: African American. His comedy tours in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East were highly successful, but he remained lesser known in the United States.

In 2014 Noah began appearing as a correspondent on Comedy Central’s satirical television news program The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. The next year, after Stewart announced that he was stepping down as host, Noah was announced as his replacement. The Daily Show with Trevor Noah continued the format of a half-hour news program. The opening monologue typically summarized the day’s main stories and included sarcastic or satirical punch lines. It was usually followed by a “mockumentary” feature that consisted of humorous reporting on an unusual or newsworthy topic. The show concluded with an interview segment that typically featured a celebrity or major political figure. Noah’s popularity grew in the United States with The Daily Show, especially after he incorporated commentary on international current events.

Two hospitals rejected me while in labour, Basketmouth’s wife shares testimony

Earlier today, popular Nigerian comedian, Basketmouth, and his wife, Elsie, took to their verified Instagram accounts to share pictures of their newborn daughter.
While the elated parents shared the adorable picture, the ace comedian’s wife revealed that she was rejected by two hospitals while in labour.
Sharing her testimony, Elsie wrote, “My little miracle….. So let me share my testimony with you. So on the day I put to birth, I was rejected by two hospitals (I had registered in one of them) even though labour had started and my contractions were happening every two minutes.
“Their reason was that I hadn’t done my antenatal with them, so they didn’t want to take me in case there was an emergency.”
According to her, after 40 minutes of driving back and forth, she was eventually admitted in a hospital at Victoria Island.

She continued, “I can only thank God. It was midnight, so there was no traffic. While in the labour room, my water broke and I had a cord prolapse…. (never heard of it until that day).“So, a cord prolapse is when the cord comes out of the uterus before the baby. When this happens, it can result in a loss of oxygen to the baby, and may even result in a stillbirth.
“But God was gracious; he was kind, he didn’t let the devil win…. When I saw the doctor and nurses panic, I knew something was wrong. In that moment of fear, I started to declare life for myself and my baby. Thankfully, God came through as always.” (sic)

She further revealed that due to the complications, she had her bundle of joy via a caesarian session.
“Fortunately, the doctor knew the emergency steps to take to keep my baby alive while they prepared me for an emergency CS. The CS doctor arrived in good time and I had my baby who is well and alive. Thank you Lord,” she said.

Nigerians lucky to have Buhari as President -Shehu of Borno

The Shehu of Borno, Abubakar El-Kanemi says Nigerians, and indeed the people of Borno State, are lucky to have Muhammadu Buhari as the President of Nigeria as he has significantly changed the tide against insurgency and insecurity in the country.

The first class traditional ruler who said this on Monday when the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, paid him a condolence visit over the loss of his elder brother, said his people had “seriously suffered as a result of Boko Haram crisis,” but that they were “lucky” to have the Buhari government, which eventually changed the tide.

According to El-Kanemi, all the local government areas in the state, which were under the control of Boko Haram had been taken back by the troops, adding that normal business activities had also returned in the state.

He also rejoiced at the news that Boko Haram elements were surrendering, saying, “it’s a welcome development”, because “Borno is a home of peace and we are for peace.

We are lucky to have President Muhammadu Buhari as our leader as he had done what nobody thought would be possible to do.

“Before his coming to power, we could not sleep, we could not go out to do our businesses.

“Our people were fleeing to neighbouring countries because of Boko Haram but today, peace has returned because Buhari has lived up to expectations. We are lucky to have such a dedicated man as President,” the Shehu added.

Jigawa police arrest six students for forcefully entering man’s house, cutting his hair

The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested six students for allegedly entering a man’s house forcefully and barbing his head against his wish.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Lawan Shiisu, disclosed the development in a statement made available to newsmen in Dutse on Tuesday, noting that four other suspects were reportedly at large, while the police have launched a manhunt for their arrest.

According to Shiisu, the suspects, who were said to be students of the Federal University Dutse and Jigawa Polytechnic also in Dutse, forcefully entered the victim’s house on August 20, around 1 am.
He said the victim, identified as Ibrahim Sambo, who resides at Yalwawa quarters in Dutse, the state capital reported the case on August 27, saying he became sick two days after the incident.

On Aug. 27, at about 1600hrs, one Ibrahim Sambo of Yalwawa quarters of Dutse reported that on Aug. 20, at about 1000hrs, some students of Federal University Dutse and Jigawa Polytechnic, Dutse, entered his house, restrained him and forcefully barbed his hair and left. And after two days, his health started failing and he became sick,” Shiisu said.

The spokesperson added that upon receipt of the complaint, police detectives swung into action and arrested the six students aged between 18 and 19 in connection with the offence.

“The suspects, who confessed to the crime, will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation,” he added.

Cleric warns Buhari to return Nigeria to how he met it or risk Allah’s punishment

An Islamic cleric, Sheikh Nuru Khalid, has come out hard on President Muhammadu Buhari over insecurity and the activities of bandits in the country, saying the President should return the country to how he met it, or risk eternal punishment from Allah.

Sheikh Khalid, who is the Chief Imam of Apo Legislative Quarters Mosque in Abuja, in a viral video at an event on Monday, insisted that Buhari has derailed from the mandate Nigerians gave him and “God will punish Buhari if he fails to return Nigeria to the state he met it.”

The fiery cleric, speaking in Hausa language, noted that Nigeria had no challenge of banditry before Buhari assumed power, but the situation has gotten out of hand because of the President’s ineptitude.

Addressing worshippers during his sermon, the cleric vowed that “Allah would punish Buhari if he fails to tackle bandits.”

Go and tell President Muhammadu Buhari that under his government, some group of people are issuing threats to local communities, demanding that they should be paid some amounts of money or face attack.

“And they would gather the money and announce publicly on the BBC that they (bandits) would be paid this Friday to avoid attack.

“Tell the president that there is a country we pay allegiance to, and there is a part of the country we do not know, which is governed by bandits.

“The president should either return the country as one nation where bandits are not killing people anyhow, just the way he took over, or Allah will deal with him.

“Tell him that I, Sheikh Nuru Khalid says Allah will surely punish him if he fails to deliver on the mandate Nigerians gave him,” the fiery Sheikh added.

Nine family members, including children, killed in US drone attack in Kabul

Nine members of the same family, including six children, have been confirmed killed in a US drone attack targeting the ISIL-affiliated State in Khorasan Province (IS-K), members in Kabul on Sunday.

According to Red Cross official who has been helping injured civilians in the war-torn Afghanistan, the US drone attack destroyed a car laden with explosives near the international airport in Kabul.

The United States’s Central Command (CENTCOM) said it was aware of “reports of civilian casualties” following the drone attack, which it said hit “multiple suicide bombers” who were preparing to attack the ongoing evacuations at the Kabul airport.

The Command added that it was still “assessing the results of the attack, which we know disrupted an imminent ISIS-K threat to the airport.”

Sunday’s attack was the second by US forces in Afghanistan since the Kabul Airport bombings last week where over 175 people, including 13 US troops, lost their lives.

The IS-K had claimed responsibility for the attack, leading to President Joe Biden vowing to hunt down the assailants and taking them out.

A senior US official said Sunday’s attack came after “individuals were seen loading explosives into the boot of a vehicle parked in a residential compound near Kabul airport.”

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said two IS-K members who were targeted were killed in the drone attack.
