The Oyo State government has suspended three teachers over their alleged involvement in sexual harassment at the state’s training school for the physically challenged in Ogbomoso.

The state’s Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Rahman Abdu-Raheem, who confirmed the development in a statement on Friday, said the government had commenced an investigation into the case.

Abdu-Raheem also revealed that the principal of the training had been transferred.

He said: “After the video on the sexual harassment at the centre was made public, the staff members were immediately handed suspension and transfer over their alleged involvement in the indecent act.”

He also asked school principals, headteachers, and others to check acts that would jeopardise the government’s efforts at improving the standard of education in the state.

Emirates Airlines resumes operations as Nigeria, UAE resolve differences

The Federal Government on Friday announced that the suspension of flights by Emirates Airlines into and out of Nigeria had been officially lifted.

According to the government, the suspension was halted following the resolution of differences between Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates after the UAE lifted some of the restrictions imposed on travellers from Nigeria as part of measures to contain COVID-19.

The development was disclosed by the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyema, at the headquarters of the Federal Ministry of Aviation on Friday night in Abuja.

Sirika said, “We are all aware of the situation of Emirates Airlines operations in Nigeria. So today we received communication removing some of the conditions for travel which we had concerns about.

And having done so, and being the only impediments to their operations, we also accept to lift the ban on the operations of Emirates to the country beginning from today. This is a product of lengthy negotiations between us and them.”

Sirika said the ban was lifted unconditionally, adding that going forward, Nigerians could fly directly to the UAE and back into Nigeria without restrictions.

It would be recalled that in July this year, the UAE had insisted on travellers from Nigeria undergoing several other COVID-19 tests after the initial test in Nigeria.

“In line with government directives, passengers flights to and from Nigeria (Lagos and Abuja) are suspended with immediate effect from June 21, 2021, until further notice,” Emirates Airlines had announced in a statement.

However, the aviation minister said on Friday that the issues had been resolved and that Emirates had officially resumed operations in Nigeria.

Lawyer who sued celebrities for supporting EndSARS has been killed in Anambra

Human rights activist and lawyer, Kenechukwu Okeke has reportedly been murdered in Anambra state.

His family made the disclosure to Daily Post on Thursday, stating that Okeke was allegedly macheted by his attackers numbering seven in his compound and a keg of fuel poured on him before he was lit up and left to burn to death.

The controversial activist had filed criminal complaints before a magistrate court in Abuja against 50 persons over their alleged involvement in #EndSARS protests last year.

Some of the persons listed in the suit include Nigerian football star, Kanu Nwankwo, musicians’ Folarin Falana, better known as Falz, Innocent Idibia aka Tubaba, and David Adeleke better known as Davido.

Daily Post reports that Okeke was killed in Nkpor, near Onitsha, Anambra State, in the presence of his wife, Mrs Blessing Odinakachi Okeke and his little daughter.

Okeke’s wife was quoted as saying; “Kenechukwu Okeke was killed by his tenant.

”The Tenant, Chiadiobi, was living in our house, but when he packed out without our knowledge and asked to be given two months of his rent that he left, we told him he should have notified us that he was packing out.

“My husband was not around the day he came but I told him he packed out of the house without our knowledge and should not be given back any money. He threatened to deal with us, saying he will teach my husband a lesson. I called my husband and told him what the boy said and that he should not come to confront him, since they say he is a bad boy.

My husband later reported the matter to the DSS and to the police, and he was made to write an undertaking, but he was still coming to terrorize us. Sometimes he will come to our house and break open the gate and come in and pick whatever he wants to pick.

“One day, he came to our house and my husband confronted him, without knowing that he had many boys with him downstairs, and before my husband could do anything, they macheted him, and the fuel we wanted to pour into our gen, they poured it on him and lit him up, and that was how my husband died.

“That day was Sunday and not everyone was around, and the few people around tried to quench the fire and also stop it from burning our house, and later we took him to hospital in Enugu, and that was how he died.”

Mrs Okeke lamented that since after her husband’s death in October, the family has been left alone with the burden of catering for his burial, just as no mention or quest by any organisation to take up his matter has been heard of.

She said what was more heart-rending was that her husband’s killer; Chiadiobi, is still in the neighbourhood, bragging about having dealt with Okeke, while also confronting her husband’s aged mum.

“He even recently confronted my husband’s mother, warning her that he heard that she is taking the matter up, and was warning her to be careful. The boy is still free, going around and without remorse, and we are just left alone to do the arrangements of the burial.

“Up till now, he has not been arrested, even though we took him to police and DSS, and he was made to write an undertaking that he will not disturb us again, but he has finally killed him. I’m not even understanding the police on this matter. I’m confused. The boy is behaving like he is untouchable, and everyone is saying that he is a bad boy and we should be careful. We live in Nkpor, near Onitsha, Tarzan junction.”

Spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, DSP Toochukwu Ikenganyia, when contacted by Daily Post, said that the police is aware of the matter.

It is a reported case, but for now I can tell you that the matter is still sketchy. Just give me some time, I will get back to you with the full details of the matter,” he said.

This responsibility has occasioned conducting joint activities with members of the civil and paramilitary organizations. These joint operations with other security agencies particularly the Nigerian Police (NP) create occasions for the police to equate its hierarchy with the NA and this has often led to friction, especially at the lower levels.

“This friction has occasionally led to bodily harm and in some cases death to our troops. This is in spite of the fact that the victims have been identified and established to be serving personnel.

“This Dept is therefore conducting an evaluation of these occurrences with a view to establishing the frequency and recommend possible remedial measures to stem the tide. Consequently, all NA corps, formations and establishments are please requested to forward all recorded incidence of police brutality against personnel of the NA.

The report should cover the last 2 years. Returns to reach this NLT 8 December 21 and should be forwarded using enclosed formal.“

Female passenger breaks bottle, stabs Lagos Uber driver over N4100 fare

An Uber driver, identified only as Adewale, has accused a passenger, Laura, of stabbing him with a bottle during an argument in the Agungi area of Ajah, Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Adewale conveyed the lady from Ajao Estate to her friend’s house in Ajah on Tuesday.
After they got to the place, the driver demanded payment, but Laura reportedly claimed that she could not transfer money to him because her bank’s mobile application was not working.
Speaking with our correspondent, the 42-year-old driver said the passenger went inside the building to get money from her friends and returned with N2,000.

He stated that he demanded his complete payment of N4,100, but the situation led to an argument, as Laura allegedly used a bottle to stab him for refusing to let her go.
Adewale said, “Around 12pm on Tuesday, this lady, Laura, requested me to carry her from Ajao Estate to Agungi in Ajah. I drove down to her location, picked her up and conveyed her to Ajah.
“When we got there, I dropped her off and asked for my money as the Uber app brought up N4,100 as the transport fare. But she said she could not transfer money to my account because the banking app on her phone was not working.

“She requested to meet her friends inside the building to get the money, but I told her to enter my car so I could convey her to the bank to make a cash withdrawal and pay me, but she refused and told me to wait. She went inside and on returning, gave me N2,000 as against the N4,100.
“She told me to give her my account number so she could send the rest, but I declined as I had faced similar situations in the past. She said since I was the one that did not want to agree, she would delay me there.

“I pleaded with her to give me my money to avoid any delay, but she started laughing. I never knew when she went inside, she returned with a bottle. So, when she said that she was going inside without paying my balance, I held her and she attacked me with the bottle. She broke the bottle and used it to stab me in the hand.”
The Ogun State indigene said neighbours around took him to a chemist for treatment, adding that he reported the case at the Ilasan Police Station.
A security guard in the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he was asleep when he heard the driver and the passenger fighting, adding that he intervened for peace to reign.
He said, “The two of them were fighting and I did not know how she did it because the girl injured the man in the hand. The girl was the one using the bottle; she came to see her friend, Blessing, who stays in the house. I had to call Blessing and her friends to come outside to see what happened.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu, said policemen had been detailed to arrest Laura, adding that the command had commenced investigation into the case.

Don’t disrespect your husband because you’re paying the bills – Obasanjo’s wife tells women

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s wife, Aduke Obasanjo, has said that women should not to expect their husbands to apologise to them, rather they should try to appease them.

Speaking at the 41st Adult Harvest Celebration of the Celestial Church of Christ International Headquarters, Ketu, Lagos State on Sunday, Mrs Obasanjo advised women on how to keep their homes, and cautioned them against involving third parties in their marriages.

Aduke also urged women not to disrespect their husbands, especially those paying bills in the family, adding that they are only lucky to be blessed by God.

She said: “Women who shoulder the responsibilities of their husbands are only lucky to be blessed by God; it’s never enough for them to disrespect their husbands.

Instead of expecting a man to say sorry, women should learn how to lead their husbands to the bedroom and touch them romantically.

Whatever you do in the house will have an impact on the children and those children are the seed that will give us rest of mind. The rest of mind you give your husband is important.”

Nigeria ready for local production of vaccines – NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) said on Monday that Nigeria has met all the World Health Organisation (WHO) requirements on production of vaccines.

The NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, who disclosed this at a joint press conference with the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, in Abuja, said the country has met the WHO Maturity Level Three recommendations on local production of vaccines.

She revealed that Maturity Level Three is a compulsory status for any country that wanted to go into vaccine production and other activities.

Adeyeye noted that WHO made 868 recommendations to Nigeria and they had been met.

She said: “The journey for the feat started in January 2018, and by October 2021, Nigeria through the efforts of NAFDAC with support from Federal Ministry of Health, has met the recommendations and it’s expected that soon, WHO officials would give approval for Nigeria to begin the production of vaccine.

“Having met all the criteria, we are waiting for the WHO officials to physically visit the headquarters of NAFDAC to assess the requirements before a final decision on Maturity Level Three status. What it simply means is that Nigeria is closer to manufacturing vaccines, and the success was as a result of a change in culture and way of doing things.

“We have expanded our drugs laboratory in Yaba, and our vaccine laboratory is also being built in Oshodi, both in Lagos, and it will be completed soon.

“The rules that apply to medical sciences several years ago may not be relevant in today’s world or must have been modified.

“Undoubtedly, we produced yellow fever and other vaccines in Nigeria years ago, but the rules have changed. The rule is that any country that wants to produce vaccines must have a strong regulatory system, and that might be the reason for the many recommendations of NAFDAC.”

The Osun State police command said on Sunday the autopsy on the slain post-graduate student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Timothy Adegoke, was delayed because his family wanted to be part of the process.

The command’s spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, who disclosed this to journalists in Osogbo, said the autopsy would now be carried out on Monday at Osun University Teaching Hospital in the state capital.

Opalola, however, said the deceased’s body was deposited at UTH not at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH) as she mentioned earlier.

She said: “The family has indicated that they will be available on Monday (today) for the conduct of the autopsy.

“I will like to add that the deceased’s family members were equally present when the remains of the deceased were exhumed.

The police, a pathologist, and family members of the deceased witnessed the exhumation of the body and the family members can attest to it that no part of the deceased’s body was missing.”

Adegoke, who was on his way to Osun for an examination at OAU Distance Learning Centre, in Moro, Ife North Local Government Area when he was declared missing on November 7.

Be ruthless with bandits, kill them and take their weapons,’ Army chief charges troops

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Farouk Yahaya, on Sunday, charged troops to eliminate suspected bandits and kidnappers and take their weapons.

Yahaya made the call during the inauguration of some facilities at the Nigerian Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) Headquarters in Minna, Niger State.

He said: “I am here in Minna today as part of my operational visits across the country to ginger our soldiers for the good job they are doing.

“I urge them to continue and to be more resolute and decisive in dealing with the criminals.

“When we engage criminals such as bandits and kidnappers, we are not looking for prisoners of war but to kill them and take their weapons.

That is what we will continue to do until we stamp them out.”

The army chief said some areas of challenges highlighted by commanders would be addressed by the military authorities.

Yahaya added: “The essence of the visit is to interact with the soldiers and identify some areas of concern, address them and ginger the officers and soldiers to do more.”

He stressed that the army was doing its best with other security agencies to tackle insecurity across the country.

“We are addressing security challenges in collaboration with other security agencies and stakeholders.

“It is not easy to tackle security challenges but I must tell you that we are doing our best.

“There is the need for the public to give accurate and useful information to the security agencies to tackle insecurity.

If we take security as everybody’s business, we will have more synergy and improve on what we are doing,’’ he concluded.

Afe Babalola wants EFCC, NUC to prosecute operators of illegal varsities

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Afe Babalola, on Sunday charged the National Universities Commission (NUC) and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to move against operators of illegal universities in the country.

Babalola, who made the call at the 9th Convocation Ceremony of Afe Babalola University (ABUAD), Ado-Ekiti, said the arrest and prosecution of operators of illegal universities would safeguard the nation’s education system from imminent collapse.

The ABUAD founder urged the NUC to be strict and thorough in regulating the establishment of universities in Nigeria.

He also cautioned state governors against establishing universities for political reasons.

He stressed that many of such universities become unsustainable after the governors leave office.

Babalola said: “Most disappointedly, the National Assembly for some time now approved the establishment of one subject universities in members’ constituencies.

“One remembers the fate of state universities established by some governors in their localities, which were not sustainable after they left power.

I call these universities political universities. I call on NUC, which in law is authorized to approve the establishment of universities, to ensure that the conditions laid down in law are strictly followed.

“The NUC on its website had been publishing names of illegal universities annually. This means no action had been taken against those which were discovered the previous years.

“The damage done to education by these illegal universities is irreparable.

“I call on the Federal Government, Federal Ministry of Education, NUC, EFCC to identify these universities, their operators and teachers and take appropriate sanctions which include forfeiture of the property and imprisonment of collaborators.”

Family of salesgirl killed during Yoruba nation rally gets new house from Lagos govt

The family of late Jumoke Oyeleke, the 25-year-old salesgirl who was killed by a police stray bullet during the Yoruba Nation rally in Lagos on July 3, has been given a well-furnished two bedroom apartment by the Lagos State government.

While presenting the keys of the new apartment which is located in the Ikorodu area of the state to the family, as well as cash gift of N1m on Saturday, the state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Administration, Mrs. Titi Oshodi, said the government has been following the matter of the slain girl and the first in line of intervention was to relocate the family from its former abode to a decent apartment.

“We are in the new place of the family of the victim of Yoruba Nation Rally which took place a few months ago,” Oshodi said.

We have been to her initial place of abode, we have been in touch with the mother of the deceased, Mrs. Ifeoluwa Oyeleke since the time of the incident, following up her state in every ramification to find out how she is doing, economically.

‘’Due to the compassionate nature of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in ameliorating their suffering as possible, he felt if it is not possible to bring back the dead we can at least ameliorate the suffering of the family of the deceased.

“So here we are at the place of abode for Mrs. Ifeoluwa Oyeleke with her three children and effectively present these keys to her and also present a little bit of a token of N1 million from the governor to help fit into the next phase of life.

Since the tragic incident was not planned, the governor decided to make a quick arrangement for the family by renting apartment in the interim for her and the other children, while pursuing other action, moving forward.’’

Responding to the kind gesture of the state government, Mrs. Oyeleke recalled that her late daughter, Jumoke, was working as a shop assistant when she was hit by a stray bullet.

Our former house was a rented apartment but we left because the house was sold to a developer and since I couldn’t afford another house, we had to move to a shanty and we have been staying there for about a year before Jumoke died. This is indeed a great relief. I’m grateful.

‘’It was a church member who allowed us to stay in the shanty. I work as a domestic assistant. I help people wash clothes, and clean their compounds. I thank the government for remembering me and my children.

“God will bless Governor Sanwo-Olu and what happened to me will not be his portion. God will grant his heart desires.

’I want the government to help me find a profitable job so I can train my children properly. My children used to attend a private school but I enrolled them in a government school because I could no longer afford the fees of a private school.”
