DSS invites Bishop Kukah for saying Buhari is soft on terrorism, banditry

The Department of State Services (DSS) has invited the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah for questioning, days after the vocal priest criticised President Muhammadu Buhari for failing to curb nationwide insecurity, Peoples Gazette reports.

Kukah had slammed Buhari in his Christmas sermon, saying the president has failed to show competence as terrorists, bandits and other criminals embark on a coordinated and relentless rampage across the country.

“We also have lost count of hundreds of individuals and families who have been kidnapped and live below the radar of publicity. Does the President of Nigeria not owe us an explanation and answers as to when the abductions, kidnappings, brutality, senseless, and endless massacres of our citizens will end? We need urgent answers to these questions,” he had said.

The priest’s comment, which was only the latest amongst several scathing criticisms he had directed at the president in recent years, drew criticism from President Buhari’s supporters.

According to Peoples Gazette, a top source revealed that the secret police ordered Kukah to appear at its headquarters for questioning. Kukah had, however yet to honour the invitation as of Saturday afternoon.

A spokesman for The Kukah Centre did not immediately return a request seeking comments on Saturday afternoon.

DSS spokesman declined to answer questions from The Gazette about the development.

Dowen College student, Sylvester Oromoni’s death natural – Police

The Lagos State police command said on Friday the 12-year-old student of Dowen College in Lekki, Sylvester Oromoni, died a natural death.

The state’s Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, who disclosed this at a press briefing at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja, said the final results of the post-mortem and toxicology examination conducted on the deceased in Lagos and Delta confirmed that the cause of the death was natural.

The state government had on Wednesday cleared the students and staff of the school arrested by the police in connection with the boy’s death.

Sylvester’s family had claimed late last year that their son died after he was tortured by his mates for refusing to join a cult group in the college.

The school management later dismissed the claim, saying the boy was injured while playing football with his mates.

To pave way for a thorough investigation of the incident, the state government ordered the indefinite closure of the college late November.

At the briefing, the police commissioner said there was no evidence to establish a case of torture, bullying and forceful application of poisonous substances against the suspects.

He said: “ I am compelled by necessity of duty and in the interest of justice, transparency and openness, to invite the press here this afternoon to give an update on investigation carried out into the circumstances surrounding the death of Sylvester Oromoni Jnr, the 12- year-old student of Dowen College, Lekki.

However, due to the seriousness of the incident and the dare need to carry out a diligent investigation, the State CID was directed by me to take over the investigation of the case with immediate effect.

In compliance with this directive, the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, took over the case on 3rd December 2021 and continued investigation in earnest. In the course of investigation, eight suspects were arrested. The suspects included three House Masters of the College and five students who were said to have been mentioned by the deceased before his death.

A remand warrant dated 7th December 2021 was obtained at the Yaba Magistrate Court to enable the police detain the suspects for 21 days in the first instance while investigation continued. On 9th December 2021, all the parties including the deceased’s family, the school management, and witnesses were interviewed by me at the Command Headquarters, Ikeja.

“During the open interview, it was unanimously agreed that another autopsy should be carried out where pathologists from all parties would be present. The investigation was extended to Delta State and Abuja.

“ I will like to state here that investigation revealed that same case was reported at the Area Command, Warri, Delta State on 1st December 2021. It has also been established that a post-mortem examination was initially carried out on 2nd December 2021 by a Consultant Pathologist, Dr. Clement Vhriterhire of the Central Hospital, Warri, Delta State.

JAMB warns of fraudulent persons selling UTME forms

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has drawn the attention of the public to the antics of some fraudulent persons who are engaged in the sale of yet-to-be-announced 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) and Direct Entry (DE) forms.

This was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the JAMB spokesman, Fabian Benjamin who urged Nigerians to disregard any memo regarding the sale of forms, as the board works towards fixing a date for the commencement of sales.

The statement reads “The attention of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has been drawn to the activities of unwholesome elements who had been misleading the general public on the purported commencement of the sale of the 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and Direct Entry application documents.

For the avoidance of doubt, any information in circulation purporting to have emanated from the Board to the effect that the sale of the 2022 UTME and DE forms has commenced is not only fraudulent but is a calculated attempt by mischief makers to create unnecessary panic among prospective candidates for their own selfish ends.

“It should be noted that the commencement of the sale of the Board’s application documents in any given year has never been shrouded in mystery rather it is always a well-publicised undertaking in the print media as well as online and electronic platforms.

“Although the Board has concluded all arrangements to commence the sale of the 2022 UTME/DE Application Documents in due course it is yet to fix any date for its commencement.

The Board wishes to inform the general public that they would be sufficiently informed of the commencement of the sale of EPINs once approval has been granted by relevant authorities.

“Furthermore, the announcement of a suitable date to commence the sale would be accompanied by well-defined information on the procedures for the purchase of the e-pins, creating a profile, and where to go for biometric capturing, among other essential details.”

Notorious bandits’ kingpin, Bello Turji, releases 52 kidnap victims

Following the bombardment and killing of two bandit kingpins, Alhaji Auta and Kachalla Ruga, by troops of the Air Component of Operation Hadarin Daji in the Gusami Forest and Tsamre Village in Birnin Magaji local government area of Zamfara State on Friday, another notorious bandit commander, Bello Turji, has released 52 kidnap victims his group had abducted.

Turji’s gesture of releasing the victims on Monday, according to security experts in the state, was part of his efforts to appease the state and federal governments towards granting him amnesty.

Turji had, in late 2021, reportedly written a ceasefire letter to President Buhari, Governor Bello Matawalle and the Emir of Shinkafi, asking for amnesty with a promise to lay down his arms, disband his group and release all captives in his camp.

A source at the Zamfara State Government House who confirmed the release of the abducted victims, said they were mostly from communities in Shinkafi, Zurmi, and Birnin Magaji local government areas of the state as well as Isa and Sabon Birni councilds of Sokoto State.

“The victims were released voluntarily by Bello Turji on Monday afternoon.

“The Zamfara State Governor had ordered the release of five buses which were used to ferry the victims to the Government House late in the evening. The five buses were sent to a river bank where the released victims had gathered waiting for us.

The freed captives were being taken to Gusau, the state capital, where they are currently undergoing medical checks,” he said.

Another official who also confirmed the release of the victims, said Turji took the step to appease the state governor to grant him amnesty.

“I can confirm that His Excellency knew of the decision by Turji to release the victims. For now, I know the stand is that there will be no dialogue with bandits because even the letter was disregarded.

“We also learnt that Turji has been pleading with some of his friends to release some captives as part of his plan to appease us but I’m not sure it will work,” he said.

The state police spokesperson, Mohammed Shehu, was not forthcoming when calls and text messages to his phone were not responded to at the time of going to press.

However, a senior military officer who is part of the Operation Hadarin Daji in Zamfara who spoke to Ripples Nigeria on the condition of anonymity, said Turji’s gesture was coming a bit late as the military has been given the all clear to “bring him and all bandits down.”
