World Bank projects 2.5% growth for Nigeria’s economy in 2022

The World Bank on Tuesday projected a 2.5 percent growth for the Nigerian economy in 2022.

In its latest Global Economic Prospects report released in Washington, the Bretton Wood institution cited higher oil prices and accelerated growth in telecommunication and financial services as some of the factors responsible for the rebound of the country’s economy.

World Bank projected a 2.4 percent growth for the Nigerian economy in 2021.

The bank expected the global growth to decelerate markedly from 5.5 percent in 2021 to 4.1 percent in 2022, then 3.2 percent in 2023.

The report read: “In Nigeria, growth is projected to strengthen somewhat to 2.5 percent in 2022 and 2.8 percent in 2023.

“The oil sector should benefit from higher oil prices, a gradual easing of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) production cuts, and domestic regulatory reforms.

“Activity in service sectors is expected to firm as well, particularly in telecommunications and financial services. However, the reversal of pandemic-induced income and employment losses is expected to be slow; this, along with high food prices, restrains a faster recovery in domestic demand.

“Activity in the non-oil economy will remain curbed by high levels of violence and social unrest as well as the threat of fresh COVID-19 flare-ups with remaining mobility restrictions being lifted guardedly because of low vaccination rates — just about 2 percent of the population had been fully vaccinated by the end of 2021.”

Gov Wike double-faced, aiding illegal oil bunkering in Rivers —APC

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has alleged that the state governor, Nyesom Wike is aiding illegal oil bunkering in the state.

In a statement signed by the APC Publicity Secretary in the state, Senibo Finebone, the opposition accused Wike of being double faced and selective in his fight against illegal oil bunkering.

Recall that Governor Wike, on January 9, 2022, declared wanted, those he described as “kingpins of bunkering and illegal crude oil refining activities”

Wike had published a list of 19 names of alleged illegal oil bunkers and crude oil refiners.

The governor also threatened to publish names of people behind illegal bunkering activities in Okrika communities, Port Harcourt Township, Rivers South-East and Rivers South-West Senatorial Districts, if they fail to voluntarily report themselves to the police.

Reacting to the governor’s naming and shaming act, the APC said it had conducted an investigation, which “has revealed indirect largescale complicity by the Rivers State Government in the menace.”

The party alleged that Julius Berger Construction Company, a major partner of the Rivers State government in execution of projects, patronizes illegal oil bunkers and that the governor was aware.

The statement reads in part: “From 2015 to date, most major projects by the Rivers State Government since its inauguration are being executed by Julius Berger Nigeria Ltd.

“At the present peak of Julius Berger activities in Rivers State, the company consumes on the average about 300,000 litres of AGO per day. This has undeniably become one single biggest AGO consumption volume in Rivers State. Sadly, the entire volume of AGO is sourced from illegal refiners of the product locally called ‘kpofire’ and the reason is that Julius Berger in Rivers State buys AGO at between N220 and N240 per litre, whereas, the official ex-depot price of AGO from NIPCO and other major importers range from N315 to N350 per litre”.

It was further stated that Julius Berger provided a ready market for illegal refiners, thereby “encouraging so many people (young and old) to join the illegal refining business”.

The APC alleged that Wike had only published few names while protecting others because of self interest.

The statement queries, “Who is the governor afraid of in declaring all suspects involved in the illegal business wanted in all the LGAs particularly those contiguous to Port Harcourt?

“Rivers APC is deeply worried that the hurried action of the governor in declaring some persons wanted and and leaving out others, is typical of the kneejerk style of Gov Wike and will only scratch the problem on the surface without getting to its very roots with a view to stamping it out.”

The APC urged Wike to choose the protection of lives of residents of Port Harcourt and Rivers State over his alleged interests in Julius Berger Nigeria Ltd.

Illegal oil bunkering and crude oil refining has resulted in a surge of airborne particulate (black soot) in parts of the state, causing health harzards to the residents.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command on Monday revealed that it had yet to receive any memo towards commencing a manhunt for 19 persons allegedly involved in illegal oil refining and bunkering.

This was disclosed by the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Friday Eboka, in response to questions from the media over the state government’s pronouncement.

Ripples Nigeria had reported that Governor Nyesom Wike announced a list of 19 kingpins wanted for alleged illegal oil refining and bunkering.

However, in his statement, Eboka said, “Actually I heard over the news that some people have been declared wanted by the State Government. We are still expecting to get the list from the government so we can work on them.

“We don’t act on what we hear on the radio. By the time we get the list, we will go after them and I want to assure you that they will be arrested and prosecuted if we have evidence to prosecute them.”

He said it all started when he was introduced to a young beautiful lady whose physique he really like. He showed interest in knowing more about her.

During their date, they visited different beautiful places and he bought all kinds of food as they had fun like lovers.

Atoyebi revealed that in one of their conversations, the lady asked him about his opinion on yahoo boys (internet fraudsters) and in response, he said they are criminals.

After their date, the lady told him their relationship can never be as he cannot handle her bills as yahoo boys would.

The man thought the lady was only playing pranks until she blocked him. Months after, Atoyebi was informed that the lady was murdered by her boyfriend.

He shared; ”This beautiful lady. Tall, Lanky and caramel skinned was introduced to me mid last year by one of my friends. I loved what I saw and I wanted to know more about her.

We went on a date and it was so fun filled. We visited 3 different places that day. From Magic Land to Shoprite, we were doing like love birds. We ate different stuffs, things I have never tasted in my life.

During our conversation, she asked what’s my view on Yahoo guys, I told her they are criminals.

Later that night, she told me we can’t work because I can’t handle her bills. She said she only date yahoo boys. I thought she was joking until she blocked me.

She didn’t even know my name – Man celebrates woman who paid his school fees despite him being a stranger

A young Ghanaian graduate has shared a moving story of how a woman came to his aid even though she didn’t know him.

Efo Korku Mawutor, in a post on LinkedIn said the woman personally handled payment of his school fees in order for him to pursue further education.

According to Mawutor, he was able to secure admission to study at the Ghana Institute of Journalism, in 2015 and 2016, but had to forfeit it due to a lack of financial support.

The young man had gone as far as visiting the rector of the school, to personally beg for a chance to pay the fees later and also applied for a Mastercard scholarship at the Ashesi University to no avail.

But luck came his way when one of his teachers, Madam Makafui Aku Akpah, made him aware that her sister, Gladys Akpah, would be able to support him, and based on that, he applied again in the year 2017.

He gained admission into the Journalism Institute and the woman paid his school fees despite not knowing him.

Sharing her photo on LinkedIn, he wrote;

”I got admission to study in the Ghana Institute of Journalism, in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

On the first two occasions, I could not raise the admission fee. In fact, I carried my skinny short but confident self to meet the Rector in 2016, Dr. Dzisah, to beg him to allow me start the school so I pay the admission fees later but it was an exercise in futility.

I had paid my own school fees throughout senior High school cos my parents could not afford it. And I was catering to two of my younger siblings.

In 2016 and 2017, I applied for Mastercard Foundation scholarship at Ashesi University but I couldn’t get in because I had C5 in Core Maths, (my worst grade in the WASSCE)

So, in 2017, based on the confidence from my teacher that her sister would support me by paying the first years fees, I applied to GIJ again. And guys, this woman who didn’t even know my name, nor had ever seen my face, paid my admission fees to enter the university in 2017.

Her generosity is what set me on the path to reaching where I am today.

Today I celebrate Madam Makafui Aku Akpah and her sister, my teacher, Gladys Akpah.

Three quick lessons:

1. Live a life worth recommending.

2. Gold-hearted humans exist in this world, no matter how many dark ungrateful hearts you meet on a daily.

3. God’s Not Dead”

After 15 years, Nigerian govt to conduct first census with N177bn

Figures obtained from the 2022 signed budget has revealed that Nigeria will be spending N177.33 billion on Population and Housing Census in 2022, the first since 2016.

The last time Nigeria conducted a census the Nigerian Population Commission (NPC), said the country was 140 million Nigerians with 72 million men and 69 million women.

Since the last census, Nigeria’s population figure has been based on the National Bureau of Statistics estimates.

NBS had projected that the country’s population would have grown up to 193 million persons in 2016, a 37.8% increase over a ten-year period.

While the NPC embedded on its website a worldmeter figure which was put at 213,887,204 as of Sunday, January 9, 2022.

Breakdown of 2006 census

NPC in 2006 said Kano had the highest population figures with 9.4 million persons, followed by Lagos with 9.1 million persons.

Other states that made up the top ten states with the highest population figures according to the 2006 census were; Kaduna (6.1 million persons), Katsina (5.8 million persons), Oyo (5.5 million persons), Rivers (5.1 million persons), Bauchi (4.6 million persons), Jigawa (4.3 million persons), Benue (4.2 million persons) and Anambra (4.1 million persons).

Falana charges Lagos govt to adhere to Supreme Court ruling on Magodo

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, on Monday implored the Lagos State Government to adhere to rule of law and implement the judgement of the Supreme Court in the ongoing Magodo land case.

Falana made this appeal during an interview with Channels Television “Sunrise Daily” monitored by Ripples Nigeria.

The case had been protracted over the refusal of the Lagos State Government to implement the Supreme Court ruling granting the 549 original Magodo landowners ownership of their lands.

This snowballed, last week, when the Attorney General of Nigeria, Abubakar Malami, in collaboration with the Nigerian Police Force sought to enforce the ruling by posting some personnel to the estate.

Despite the efforts of the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to make the security operatives stand down, he was unsuccessful.

Speaking on the matter, Falana charged the government to ensure the peace by abiding with the ruling of the court.

He said, “We must allow the due process of law to run its due course which the Supreme Court reiterated about the 549 plots at Magodo. For ten years, the judgement was not enforced and this does not happen in any civilised society whereby a ruling by the Supreme Court be treated with disdain.

“As far as the law is concerned, once the SC has issued a ruling it shall be final and no appeal will arise from it so you can’t say those who were granted the ruling were wrong. The ruling must be complied with. That was what led to the incident with the Governor and the Chief Superintendent of Police.

Neither under the colonial regime or the military regime was the Supreme Court’s ruling flouted. This is the second time. The first was in 2006 when the Supreme Court ordered the Obasanjo administration to pay the LASG funds and he refused to pay. This is the second time and it is unfortunate that LASG are now the villain.

“I will also send a letter to the Attorney General to comply to various pending Supreme Court rulings since he has done this by enforcing the judgement regarding the Magodo Case.”

Police making a mockery of death of Dowen College student, Sylvester —Falana

A human rights activist, and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana has lambasted the Lagos State Police Command of making a mockery of the death of Sylvester Oromoni, a student of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos.

He said it was inhumane and a mockery of the death of Master Oromoni for the Lagos State commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu to speak on the report on the cause of death of the late student.

Sylvester had reportedly told his parents before he died that he was beaten by some senior students of the school, and dived to drink a concoction, because he refused their cult group.

Odumosu had addressed a press conference in the state where he had told members of the public that the report on the inquest from Lagos on the cause of death of Sylvester showed that he died of “natural causes”.

But Falana who spoke on Channels TV Sunrise Daily on Monday, lamented that Odumosu had no right to read out such a report, adding that the only person permitted by law to read the report was the coroner.

According to him, stating that Sylvester died of ‘natural causes’ was vague, and it was not specific on the actual cause of death, as an inquest report from Delta State had previously stated the exact cause of Sylvester’s death to include a collapsed lung due to chemical poisoning.

He accused the Lagos Police command of a cover up in the death of Sylvester, adding that as the lawyer to Sylvester’s family, he had applied for a copy of the report, but had not been given.

Akeredolu orders security agents to fish out perpetrators of attack on Ondo community

The Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, on Sunday ordered security agents to fish out the individuals behind the attack on Molege community in Ose local government area of the state.

Suspected herdsmen on Friday killed three persons during the attack on the community.

Residents told journalists the criminals attacked the farmers after they were prevented from grazing on the farms in the community.

Akeredolu made the call when he visited the community alongside the state’s Commissioner of Police, Oyediran Oyeyemi, and the Commander of Amotekun Corps, Adetunji Adeleye.

He said: ”I commiserate with you on the death of your loved ones. May their souls Rest In Peace. No government will be happy with this kind of development.

“But you have to be prepared. These herdsmen are becoming too problematic.

We are not sleeping. You can see police and Amotekun here. With this one they have done, we will ensure that it is their last evil act here.

Those behind this are criminals. Those supporting them are all criminals too. Anyone who commits crime will answer for it.

“The police and Amotekun with other security agencies will set out and bring them to justice. We will treat them like criminals.

“Both the police and Amotekun have briefed me that they were being shot at. But for their boldness and courage, the criminals would have overwhelmed them.

“I want to assure you, don’t be scared. We are still on their track. They have ran to Edo now. But for the houses that were raised down, the government will bring relief materials. We will rebuild the ones that were razed completely.”

Criticising pastors attracts leprosy – Bishop Oyedepo

Senior Pastor and Founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide (Winners Chapel), Bishop David Oyedepo, has admonished Christians, urging them to desist from criticizing men of God.

The revered clergyman said such behaviour attracts dangerous punishment such as leprosy.

Oyedepo gave the warning during the Leadership Empowerment Summit at the church’s headquarters, Canaanland, Ota, Ogun State.

According to him, many critics of his ministry must have becomes victims for failing to heed the warning which is based on spiritual insights.

He said; “Beware of speaking hurt against the Ministry you claim to be part of advancing, it’s a risk. Beware of speaking hurt against a Prophet you claim to believe.

It is dangerous. It can make a man leprous. It is dangerous. We don’t have the data of how many victims may have come from this warning, but I know quite some would have been victims.”
