Jonathan outlines ways to ensure peace in West African subregion

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has revealed that the achievement of peace is paramount towards resolving the challenges in the sub-region.

Jonathan stated this on Wednesday at the strategy meeting of the West African Elders Forum(WAEF), aimed at shoring up democracy and peace in the West African sub-region.

The former President of Nigeria noted that entrenching democracy requires a collective action and consensus building by all stakeholders to safeguard it.

“The fate of the West Africa democracy is been put to question by unconstitutional change of government as recently witnessed in Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso,” Jonathan said.

The meeting also assessed some of the current trends and events happening within the West African sub-region and proposed a plan of action towards forestalling a further deterioration of peace and stability of the sub-region.

Jonathan said, “Leaders must interrogate some fundamental issues such as recurring military intervention, democracy and good governance, peace and security, economic development as well as human trafficking in the sub-region.

“Democracy as a communal asset requires a collective action and consensus building by all stakeholders to safeguard it.

“These sad developments which have occasioned a gradual erosion of our civic space and value system is what has necessitated this meeting today.

Our gathering today therefore seeks to articulate possible solutions and strategies that will help consolidate our democracy.

“This is with a view to actively engaging with governments and key stakeholders to stem the tide of democratic backsliding and the breakdown of law and order in our nations.

“I am worried that some members of the sub-region are beginning to opt for military intervention because of what they consider as the weaknesses and flaws of democratically-elected leaders.

“As respected leaders, I am aware that many of you here wield great influence in our sub-region and continent.

“Together, we can leverage our experiences and the power of diplomacy to resolve the crisis in ECOWAS today.”

He, however, appealed to all leaders across the nations to make democracy work for the interest of all citizens.

“This is why we need to continually advocate for the strengthening of our democratic institutions. Strong institutions are the pillars for the sustenance of our democracy and the development of our nations.

“As stakeholders we must therefore, help in this regard and fashion out the best approach towards the strengthening of political systems.

“As I conclude, let me re-emphasise the point that is often made that for democracy to endure, it must yield basic public goods to its citizens. These include economic development, good social services, freedom, justice, peace and security.

This underscores the place of good governance in our discourse of democracy. Democracy losses its meaning if it does not guarantee the economic status and social security of the citizens.

“Today, we must interrogate some fundamental issues such as recurring military intervention, democracy and good governance, peace and security, economic development as well as human trafficking in our sub-region.”

Buhari, Sanwo-Olu predict boom in agric sector, job opportunities from Dangote Fertilizer Plant

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday predicted a boom in the economy, especially the agricultural sector as a result of the commissioning of the Dangote Fertilizer Plant, situated in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State.

The world-class fertilizer plant was built at a cost of $2.5 billion, with the capacity to produce 3 million metric tonnes (mt) of urea yearly.

Nigeria’s average fertilizer application of 20kg/ha, is regarded as the lowest in Africa, as it lags behind some other African countries, including South Africa and Egypt.

The Dangote fertilizer plant is expected to bridge this deficit.

The plant, which is located at the fast-growing Economic Free Trade Zone, is acclaimed to be the largest of such projects in West Africa.

In his speech during the commissioning, Buhari revealed how the project will ensure the massive creation of job opportunities for the youth.

“I praise Alhaji Aliko Dangote for the project to create job opportunities for economic growth. I am confident that this investment will replicate the group’s earlier exploits in FCMG and other countries.

Dangote is the second biggest employer of labour in the country after the Federal Government. The creation of jobs by the private sector is very important to the development of the country.

In the agricultural sector, we expect a boom due to the availability of agro-chemicals needed for productive food production. Let me assure all Nigerians that our government aims to provide an enabling environment for the private sector to thrive. I commend the CBN and other stakeholders for allowing this project to come to fruition.”

Corroborating the President’s sentiments, the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu noted that this project would trigger the growth of entrepreneurs such as Dangote which will aid the development of the country.

“We are here to commission the largest fertilizer plant in Africa. The President and I discussed in London, how to provide job opportunities to our youth and this is a testament to the provision of such opportunities.

This plant will also cascade into the agricultural sector. Alhaji Dangote was able to achieve this project due to his resilience and love for the country. We need to ensure the replication of many Dangotes in our midst in order to drive development in the country.”

The union disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday by its chairman, Mr. Edet Emenyi and secretary, Mr. Victor Amirize, in Uyo.

The teachers embarked on strike on March 15 over the non-payment of leave grant from 2017 and 7.5 percent contributory pension refunds to members, among other demands.

Singer Davido tackles Gov Oyetola over campaign promise to Osun farmers

Nigerian recording artiste, David Adeleke popularly known as Davido has questioned the decision of Osun State governor Gboyega Oyetola’s to wait until his second term to fulfill his promise to farmers in the state.

Davido aired his opinion on his official Twitter platform on Sunday, March 20.

This was after the Osun State governor engaged members of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) on Sunday in the Odo-Otin local government area of the state.

He mentioned during the programme that he had not neglected his plans for them as the farmers would be his priority should he emerge victorious in the coming Osun State governorship election on July 16.

Oyetola added that his administration would continue to support farmers with necessary farm inputs.

Reacting to Oyetola’s declaration, Davido questioned why the governor could not do the needful now since he was still in power. He asked why the governor had to wait for a second term to take care of the farmers’ needs.

Davido wrote:

“Why not fulfill it before election?
Must you wait to be reelected?”

David I’d uncle, Ademola Adeleke, popularly called, the dancing senator, is also contesting for the governorship seat of Osun State under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Dead BRT passenger, Bamise’s family rejects police invitation for autopsy

The family of the late fashion designer, Oluwabamise Ayanwola, on Friday explained why the date given by the police for the conduct of autopsy on the deceased was rejected.

Oluwabamise was declared missing after boarding a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus at Lekki area of Lagos on February 26 and found dead some days later.

A member of the Ayanwola’s family, Pelumi, who addressed journalists at Right House in Adeniji Jones Street, Ikeja, Lagos State, said the family rejected the date given by the police for conduct of autopsy on their late daughter because of short notice.

He said: “We received an invitation on Wednesday from the police to come and witness Bamise’s autopsy on Thursday.

We rejected it because we felt that such time was not enough for us to gather the family members to witness it and we also deserve to invite our own pathologist because we want fairness.”

Pelumi said without autopsy, the cause of his sister’s untimely death was known to the public.

He added: “Bamise boarded a BRT bus. She was supposed to alight at Oshodi, the driver of the bus did not drop her, it was even the police that took her body to the morgue.

“The following day when we started looking for her, we went to several stations, but they were hostile to us.

“They saw the evidence, listen to the video but they were still helpless. Nobody seems to believe the police any longer as they are not doing their jobs as expected.

It is not even the police that got him arrested, they are incapacitated.

Why is the security of Nigeria not so important anymore? With Bamise’s death, it is obvious that the places of safety are no longer safe, we have many wars to win.

It is a neglect of duty to allow BRT buses to operate and be transporting passengers without security features installed in them; no Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras installed inside them to record happenings while in transit.

“Why is the state in hurry to bury my sister, that is immature?

“How can we bury her when justice has not been served?

“There is no security provided for our parents, we don’t know who is who, different people kept calling but God is on our side.”

The family’s lawyer, Mr. Ayo Ademiluyi, said they rejected the autopsy because it would be conducted by pathologists appointed by the Lagos State government.

“We received an invitation from police that we should come for autopsy a day before it would be performed.

“We rejected it because it will only be conducted by the appointed officials of Lagos State Government alone.

“Lagos State is a party in this case, they cannot be a judge in their own case, they can only be witnesses.”

“It is better for them to invite pathologists that are neutral in this case, ” he said.
