Why many Nigerian youths are unemployed – Ngige

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, said on Thursday many youths in Nigeria are currently unemployed because of lack of functional skills.

The minister stated this at a one-day trade Job, Career and Employability Fair in Abuja.

The fair was organised by the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA) in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

Ngige, who was represented at the forum by the Senior Special Assistant on Job Creation to the President, Mrs. Tilda Mmegwa, urged stakeholders to be actively involved in preparing the African workforce for future challenges.

He stressed that the Nigerian government was conscious of the fact that most of the unemployed people in the country are without functional skills.

The minister said: “Our strategy, therefore, is to equip the unemployed youths with market-driven skills, which will facilitate their access to self or paid employment.

“In recognition of this reality, my ministry is keenly committed to equipping unemployed graduates with entry point competences to make them employable.

“I am therefore happy to inform you that my ministry is scheduled to train 37,000 unemployed graduates, 1,000 in each of the states of the federation and FCT, on soft skills and marketable resumes.

“In the coming months, we will also train 3,500 unemployed youth in various vocations including fashion design, catering and event management, solar panel and CCTV installation, among others.”

Buhari signs Executive Order on maintenance of public buildings

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday signed into law the Executive Order 11 on maintenance of public buildings in Nigeria.

The President signed the document shortly before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the State House, Abuja.

In his address at the forum, Buhari directed all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to set up maintenance departments in line with the provisions of the new Executive Order.

He said the order gives legal backing to the country’s national maintenance policy, following its approval by the FEC.

The President said: “Since the approval of the policy by the FEC, the Federal Government has consciously started the implementation of maintenance of strategic facilities like the Federal Secretariat in Abuja and federal secretariats in 24 states of the federation, where at least 40 people are now daily employed in each of those 24 secretariats.

The Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation has approved the establishment of a Department of Federal Public Assets Maintenance as a vital step in support of the implementation of this national policy, which is unprecedented in our history and approach to maintenance.

“In order to ensure the fullest implementation and impact of the policy, it is my pleasure to sign this Executive Order that ties maintenance directly to our economy.

“By this Order, I expect MDAs to set out and ensure the operation of their maintenance departments and make necessary procurements for their maintenance in accordance with the provisions of the Public Procurement Act.”

NAPTIP rescues 36 Europe-bound Nigerians, 12 Ghanaians, from human traffickers

The Kano State Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking In Persons (NAPTIP), has rescued 48 human trafficking victims who were on their way to various countries in Europe, the agency said in a statement on Wednesday.

The victims, according to the Command’s Zonal Coordinator, Abdullahi Babale, comprised of 36 Nigerians and 12 Ghanaians who were being trafficked to Europe and other African countries for prostitution and other menial jobs.

According to Babale, the Nigeria Immigration Service, Jigawa Command, in collaboration with the police in Niger Republic, rescued and handed the victims over to NAPTIP.

“The victims who are between the ages of 14 and 30, mostly females, consists of Nigerians mainly from Anambra, Benue, Edo, Kogi, Osun, Ondo and Rivers, and 12 Ghanaians from different parts of the West African country.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that all the victims were being trafficked to different European countries where they were meant to engage in prostitution and other menial jobs.

“Currently, they are undergoing counselling in a shelter and will be handed over to their various states and countries at the end of the counselling program,” Babale said.

Abiola’s daughter, Tudun, slams sister for comparing their father with Yahaya Bello

Tudun Abiola, the daughter of the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, MKO Abiola, on Monday slammed her half- sister, Hafsat Abiola-Costello for comparing the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, with their late business mogul.

Abiola-Costello is the Director-General of Bello’s presidential campaign organisation.

The woman, who featured in a programme on Arise TV, likened the governor’s “Hope23” campaign slogan to Abiola’s “Hope’93” symbol.

She added that the duo believed in Nigeria’s unity.

Abiola-Costello said: “These are the same qualities I have seen in Governor Bello. He dared to contest, not minding that he was from a minority tribe in Kogi and won, and he has come out again. My father did the same, when it was believed that a Yoruba man could not be President.”

However, Tudun wondered why her half-sister would drag her father’s legacy into Bello’s campaign.

She asked Abiola-Castello to leave their father out of the issue and concentrate on selling the manifestos of her principal.

She said: “I have come to expect certain things from that individual, but just because it is not surprising, does not mean it was not staggeringly inappropriate.

“I am referring to my half-sister, Hafsat, who is the DG of Yahaya Bello’s campaign, and her comparison to my dad. There were a lot of political players in his team, and not one of them decided to throw their father under the bus for the sake of their principal.

“Come out and talk about your principal, his antecedents and stands for the future of Nigeria and leave daddy out of this. It is not her right, because it is not her name. It is our name. It is the name of future Abiolas yet unborn who should be proud of the legacy. My father was tortured because according to the United Nations, it sees solitary confinement as torture.

“He was tortured and then, he was murdered and has left his legacy only for it to be abused in this fashion.

“And I did say that I was quite consistent. We had another gentleman on the show talking about another person he was campaigning for, and using my dad to score points and I was apoplectic. Everybody should just leave his name out of this. It is especially disgusting, the false equivalence, the cynical expatiation of a genuine struggle.

Police arrests 22 suspected cultists in Ogun

Police operatives in Ogun have arrested 22 suspected cultists in different parts of the state in the last 48 hours.

The spokesman for the state police command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Monday in Abeokuta.

He said the command had set up a special squad, headed by an Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations to checkmate the disturbing activities of cultists across the state.

He said the suspects comprising members of the Aiye and Eiye confraternities were arrested at the various hideouts in Lafenwa and Oju Ogbara area of Sapon in Abeokuta.

President Muhammadu Buhari had last week ordered the police to end killings by cultists in the state.

The President’s directive followed the killing of 15 persons during cult clashes in many parts of the state.

Oyeyemi said: “Some of the suspects were also apprehended in Sagamu during a similar operation carried out by the squad.

“All the arrested suspects are currently being investigated to ascertain their roles in the cult war that had engulfed the state recently, which claimed the lives of some cult members.”

24 hours after sack, Buhari critic, Sheikh Khalid, gets new appointment

Twenty four hours after he was sacked by the Apo National Assembly Legislators’ Quarters Mosque for criticising President Muhammadu Buhari, Sheikh Nuru Khalid, has been appointed as the Chief Imam of a new Jum’mat Mosque in Abuja.

Sheikh Khalid who announced this on his social media platform on Tuesday morning while reacting to his sack on Monday, said he is to lead the congregation of the new Mosque with effect from Friday, April 8.

Commenting on the termination of his appointment by the Apo Mosque Committee, Sheikh Khalid said it was a necessary price he had to pay for “identifying with the suffering masses and speaking truth to power.”

He wrote, “My sack is a reflection of how Nigeria is today. Many people are hiding under the cover of religion to perpetrate all manner of unwholesome acts.

“Such people would stop at nothing to take away people like me, who are pro-masses and bold enough to speak the truth to power always on behalf of voiceless Nigerians.

“This is the price we pay for aligning with the people and identifying with their sufferings. By the Grace of Almighty Allah, I will be leading my new congregation this Friday, because as cleric we need a platform to operate.

“There’s a Jum’mat Mosque we built behind the CBN Quarters, in Abuja; I will now be leading the congregation there,” he added.

The spokesman for the state police command, Bright Edafe, who confirmed the development in a statement on Sunday evening in Warri, said a suspected kidnapper was killed by a combined team of police operatives attached to the Ogwashi-Uku Division and local vigilante in the operation.

He added that one AK-17 rifle was recovered from the suspect.

Edafe said: “Today, April 3, 2022, at about 0840 hours, information got to the command that a gang of dare devil kidnappers had intercepted a 14-seater bus with Registration Number: M831-FJK.

Shehu Sani faults suspension of Abuja mosque’s chief imam for criticising Buhari

A former federal lawmaker, Shehu Sani on Sunday reacted to the recent suspension of the Chief Imam of Apo Legislative Quarters mosque in Abuja, Sheikh Nuru Khalid, for criticising President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

The cleric had on Saturday slammed the President for allowing insecurity to fester in Nigeria.

He also advised Nigerians not to vote for any politician that would not address their plights in 2023.

Khalid was suspended by the mosque committee a few hours later, claimed that his utterances were against the tenets of Islam.

Sani, who reacted to the cleric’s suspension on his Twitter handle, mocked all the members of the committee and supporters of President Buhari over their misplaced reactions on the issue.

He said Khalid did what was required of a sincere religious leader in troubled times.

Sani wrote: “Sheikh Nuru Khalid dusted the mirror the clergies used to show GEJ and he showed it to the President and his colleagues couldn’t stand it. Khalid has demonstrated fidelity to his faith, to his conscience and to his conviction.”

Police diffuses another bomb in Kaduna

Police operatives in Kaduna on Thursday diffused another Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in the Rigasa community, Igabi local government area of the state.

This came a few days after an IED went off inside one of the coaches of an Abuja-Kaduna passenger train and killed at least eight passengers while 30 others sustained injuries.

The command’s spokesman, Mohammed Jalige, who confirmed the incident to journalists, said the operatives successfully diffused the bomb which was discovered in a bucket along the Makarfi road in the community.

Jalige urged the residents to report any suspicious movement within their vicinity to the nearest police station.

The spokesman said: “Yes, there was an IED planted around Makarfi Road, Rigasa this morning. We received a distress call and our officers from the EOD were deployed to the scene.

“On getting to the scene, they identified the device as Improvised Explosive Device and they successfully defused the device without causing harm to anyone.”

Oshiomhole charges Nigerians to demand quality education from govt

The former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, on Thursday charged Nigerians to demand quality education from the government.

Oshiomhole, who made the call at an event in Abuja, decried the poor quality of educational facilities in schools.

He said: “Talking about education, one thing I want us to do is not to be carried away by politics. We have a law that says if a child is not in school, the parents should be prosecuted.

“That is the law of universal compulsory education, but as we speak, we have children who are being taught under the tree, that is if they are being taught at all. And we have teachers who can’t even spell their names and they can only spread illiteracy.

“It is about harassing, engaging, terrorising and if I may quote Obasanjo, even behaving like a rebel to force governors and governments to get priorities rights with regards to education

“It is not possible for us to boast of the ultra-modern government house but the most dilapidated schools and even to employ teachers and not pay them.

“You have angry and hungry people in the classroom. They can’t be nice to our children and when they show no kindness to those children, those children grow up without care, without feeling, believing that the society is uncaring.”

Polytechnic lecturers threaten fresh strike

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) on Thursday threatened to embark on a fresh strike over the Federal Government’s refusal to meet its demands.

The union gave the government one month to honour the agreement signed by both parties last year.

The ASUP President, Anderson Ezeibe, who disclosed this to journalists at the end of its 102nd National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Yola, said the ultimatum would begin on April 4.

He recalled that the union suspended its last strike with the hope that the government would address its grievances.

Ezeibe said: “You may recall that our Union suspended a 61-day long industrial action on the 10th of June 2021 following the signing of an MOU with the government.

The suspension period was to enable the government to conclude processes already initiated in the direction of the fulfilment of the terms of the memorandum of action.”

“Following exhaustive deliberations on the issues raised above, the 102nd of the unions National Executive Council has resolved to give the Federal Government a further one month as an ultimatum to address the outstanding issues.

“Our union’s National Executive Council shall be reconvening after the one month period which takes effect from 4th April 2022 for further decisions on this subject.”

House Leader, Doguwa charges Nigerians to defend themselves against Boko Hram insurgents, bandits

The Majority Leader in the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, on Thursday charged Nigerians to defend themselves against the Boko Haram insurgents, bandits, and other criminal elements in the country.

Doguwa, who made the call at the plenary in Abuja, insisted that security agencies had failed to protect Nigerians.

The lawmaker was reacting to Monday night’s attack on the Abuja-Kaduna passenger train by terrorists.

At least eight persons died and several others were injured when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by terrorists in the train went off and forced it to derail from the track a few minutes into the trip.

Doguwa urged Nigerians to organise themselves in the form of civil defence, and protect themselves.

He said: “Mr. Speaker, I arise to speak in the capacity of the majority leader who of course is the ambassador of the government on this floor.

“When you have a government in place, the major responsibility of that government, especially a democratic one that was elected by the people, is to ensure the safety of lives and property of the innocent citizens.

Mr. Speaker, when things like this continue on a daily basis, those of us who are representatives of the government become speechless. We become speechless here to defend actions by the government. This is an elected government, under a popular democracy but day in, day out, there are killings, massacre and armed robbery all over. Left, right and centre.

This is a report from just one local government out of the 774 — Giwa local government, and the case of Giwa is not just a new case.

“Giwa has fallen coincidentally in a state (Kaduna) where you have the representation of the Nigerian military and other security agencies. Why should this thing continue to happen?

“The government in this case has to rise up to its responsibility. Call a spade, a spade. If it is about funding, each of us here knows we have never had any cause to contemplate funding our security agencies. I believe our relevant committees are following up in terms of implementation of such funding through our budget, their oversight processes.

“Why should things continue this way? We are here for the Nigerian people and we must speak for Nigerian people. We can not sit down here and fold our arms; see our electorate being killed by the day.

With all sense of responsibility, with all sense of commitment, with the fact that yes, even after this world we shall all rise to answer our fathers’ name in the next world to account for actions. I think Nigerians should at this moment be allowed to also take arms.

“Nigerians must be allowed to take up arms in defence of their innocent souls, defend their hard-earned resources and properties because it is like a monumental failure.

“If the agencies of security have failed, then Nigerians should not be seen as failures. Let Nigerians organise themselves in the way of civil defence. Let them organise and raise defence for their innocent souls because if the responsibility of the government and the security agencies cannot be carried out democratically, then let’s go to the jungle.”

He expressed concern that the state has been turned to a battlefield by rival cult groups, committing murders, kidnappings and sexual assault.

Buhari said: “What should frighten us is that the deadly cult groups are increasingly attracting lonely, anxious, troubled youth who they trap in unorthodox social practices.

“Parents and religious leaders must come to grasp what is going on and halt the radicalization of our youth.”
