Angry father shuts daughter’s salon after she refused to be trafficked to Italy for prostitution

The Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Person (NAPTIP), Dr. Fatima Waziri-Azi, has recounted how a father sealed up his daughter’s hair salon for refusing to be trafficked to Italy for prostitution.

Speaking at a sensitization campaign and community dialogue against human trafficking in Idunmwuniye community, Edo state, in collaboration with the Oba of Benin task force on human trafficking, Waziri-Azi, said the dialogue is aimed at finding solutions, creating and implementing action plans to address challenges related to human trafficking and unsafe migration practices prevalent in the communities in the state.

She alleged that some parents force their children to go to Italy for prostitution so as to make money for the family.

“The father (name withheld) called his daughter that he has concluded arrangement for her to go to Italy and make money for the family but she said no.

The father got annoyed and locked up her salon and threatened to disown her since she had refused to travel to make money for the family.

Parents should stop forcing their children to embark on this dangerous journey because many lives have destroyed all in the name of making money for the family abroad.

We are not saying people should not travel abroad, every body has a right to travel but you must travel safely and with the right documents so that you would not be exploited and forced into sex slavery, prostitution and force labour among others.”

She said NAPTIP is partnering with traditional institutions and communities because traffickers have shifted focus to communities while many people are not still aware of the danger inherent in human trafficking and irregular migration.

The representative of the Oba of Benin, Chief Isaac Oghafua Oyeoba, (Oyeoba of Benin), said the Benin monarch and the palace are totally against human trafficking.

“In 2018, he placed curse on those responsible for human trafficking in the state. That curse still exists because it lasts forever; anyone who disobeys it will get the repercussion.

The palace is against human trafficking and that is why it suggested to the NAPTIP boss during her visit that the sensitization should be brought to the nook and cranny of the state especially Edo South” he said

Singapore to end ban on gay sex after years of debate

The Singaporean government will decriminalise sex between men, the prime minister announced on Sunday, August 21, effectively making it legal to be homosexual in the city-state.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the government would repeal Section 377A of the penal code, a colonial-era law that criminalises sex between men, adding that society was becoming more accepting of gay people.

“I believe this is the right thing to do, and something that most Singaporeans will now accept,” he said in his annual National Day rally speech.

However, Lee said the government had no intention of changing the city-state’s legal definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

“Even as we repeal Section 377A, we will uphold and safeguard the institution of marriage (…). Under the law, only marriages between one man and one woman are recognised in Singapore,” Lee added.

Singapore retained the colonial-era ban on gay sex after it won independence from Britain in 1965.

Singapore is the latest place in Asia to move on LGBT rights, after India, Taiwan and Thailand.

Actor Gary Busey pictured sitting in a public park with his pants down after being charged with groping three women

American actor Gary Busey has been seen in shocking photos with his pants down in the middle of the day at a public California park a day after being charged with groping three woman at a New Jersey horror movie convention.

Busey, 78, was spotted getting down and dirty at Point Dume Park in Malibu on Saturday afternoon, August 20.The actor was charged Friday with four counts of sexual contact and harassment following multiple alleged incidents at the convention last weekend with cops saying they expect more victims to come forward.

Busey appeared unbothered as he pulled out his phone and then pulled down his pants. The actor stuck one hand down the front of his pants, and then looked around to make sure no bystanders had caught him in the lewd act.

Once done with his actions, Busey lit a cigar and looked out over the ocean for nearly 30 minutes before getting back in his car and leaving the park.

Busey, who lives in Malibu, faces two counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, one count of attempted criminal sexual contact, and one count of harassment, following the allegations made in New Jersey.

The charges stem from offenses that are alleged to have occurred at the annual Monster Mania Convention at the Doubletree Hotel last weekend in Cherry Hill, NJ, police said.

Cherry Hill Police say three women were touched by Busey inappropriately during an autograph signing and meet and greet.

It was about contact. It was about touching,’ Cherry Hill Police Lt. Robert Scheunemann told the Philadelphia Inquirer, noting that ‘multiple complaints about the actor’s conduct had been received throughout the weekend.

Police have revealed they fully expect to hear from more women in the coming days after an incident in which Busey had to be removed from a portion of the event after he was seen groping women, according to Fox 29. At the convention, Busey was said to be appearing alongside other actors including Ralph Macchio, Tom Skerritt and Veronica Cartwright.

A lawyer for the convention, Nikitas Moustakas, said the convention company was ‘assisting authorities in their investigation into an alleged incident involving attendees and a celebrity guest at its convention.”Immediately upon receiving a complaint from the attendees, the celebrity guest was removed from the convention and instructed not to return,’ he said.

‘Monster-Mania also encouraged the attendees to contact the police to file a report. The safety and well-being of all our attendees is of the utmost importance to Monster-Mania, and the company will not tolerate any behavior that could compromise those values.’

Revocation of Licence: NBC Extends Deadline for 52 Broadcasters to Pay Debts Till August 24

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has extended the revocation of the operating licences of 52 broadcast stations owing debt amounting to N2.6 billion in licensing fees until August 23, 2022.

This is coming as the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union of Nigeria (RATTAWU) has condemned the revocation of the 52 licences of broadcast stations.

In a statement signed Saturday by its Director-General, Balarabe Shehu Ilelah, NBC said the extension was due to appeal by the affected broadcast stations, relevant stakeholders, and public-spirited organisations.

Ilelah said the commission would enforce the revocation order on the affected stations by August 24 if they fail defray their debts after the expiration of the grace.

The statement was titled: ‘NBC Extends Enforcement of Revocation Order on Debtor Broadcast Stations from 24 Hours to Wednesday, August 23, 2022.’

“This is to inform all the affected broadcast stations whose licences were revoked and given 24 hours to pay all outstanding license fees that the National Broadcasting Commission has extended the period, which all outstanding debts are to be paid from 24 hours to Wednesday, August 23, 2022.

“All affected broadcast stations who fail to defray their debts on or before August 23, 2022 are directed to shut down by 12 am on August 24, 2022.

“This extension is due to appeal by the affected broadcast stations, relevant stakeholders, public-spirited organisations and organisations,” Ilelah said.

However, the Nigerian chapter of International Press Institute (IPI) said the concession by the NBC followed its intervention and the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) on how to explore amicable resolution of the dispute.

IPI Nigeria said following the revocation of the licences of the stations on Friday, it had engaged the Ministry of Information and Culture, the NBC and BON.

IPI Nigeria President, Musikilu Mojeed, said yesterday that Ilelah had graciously agreed to grant an extension on compassionate ground.

He said although the concession was a temporary relief, IPI was hopeful that all parties would engage in few days with a view to arriving at a lasting resolution of the matter.

“We thank the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed and Mallam Illela for listening to us and allowing a window for dialogue,” the statement explained.

Meanwhile, the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union of Nigeria (RATTAWU) has condemned the revocation of 52 licences of broadcast stations by NBC.It described the revocation as an untimely action with likely severe consequences.

A statement by the General Secretary of the union, Aniete Akpausoh, said that most broadcast stations are going through a lot of challenges, adding that the broadcast environment is not healthy and friendly.

RATTAWU said it has no other option but to caution NBC that “while it has the unreserved constitutional right to revoke the licences of radio and television stations that have not done the needful; however, the prevailing climate makes such an action untimely and with grave consequences. This is because most of these stations are yet to recover from the COVID-19 shock”.

It noted that during the lock-down, these stations did brave services of sustaining broadcasting.RATTAWU also made a case that the broadcast stations be given special COVID-19 palliative, considering the laudable role they played.

“Just after the upliftment of COVID-19 lock-down, the Nigerian state got stuck in the unexplained muddy waters of hike in the prices of diesel, which most stations rely on to run their programmes in the near absence of power supply from the Electricity Distribution Companies (Discos).

“This is an issue that is, at best, embarrassing to the Nation.“From the foregoing, it is needless to say that the broadcast environment is not healthy and friendly.

“Therefore, decisions that affect the broadcast environment should be taken with sapiential guidance and consideration.

“The action of the NBC is unilateral. It is not a product of stakeholders of the broadcast industry. Therefore, it stands to be half clever. This is because of the following reasons,” it said.

RATTAWU further expressed worry over the likely multiplier effects that the action of NBC would have on workers. It said already, that the economic reality of the nation is not healthy.

“Please note that shutting down media stations invariably leads to disengagements of workers which is another influx into the unemployed market and its attendant consequences.

“Therefore, any government organisation that means well to citizens will not do anything that will compound the situation.

“It is on the strength of the foregoing that RATTAWU, while urging the debted stations to do the needful, also condemns the action of NBC, describing it as untimely and uncircumspect,”

RATTAWU added.

It said the Nigerian state is preparing for the general election by 2023, adding that revoking the licenses of 52 stations and directing their total shutdown implies limiting the possibility of voter education and other electioneering activities.

“This portends great danger and disservice to the nation. Third, the ravaging insecurity of lives and properties required that the Nigerian state should make the free flow of information as much as possible.

“This will help the citizens to report to the authorities and the authorities in return will tell the citizens what needs to be done,” the statement said.

Mummified bodies: Edo government, police call for calm

With the controversy generated over the discovery of 20 mummified bodies in Benin still on, Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki has called for calm and has given the police seven days to carry out a comprehensive investigation to unravel the ownership and purpose of the facility.

Obaseki stated this at a joint press conference with the police at the headquarters of the Edo State Police Command on Friday.

Represented by his Special Adviser on Media Projects, Crusoe Osagie, Obaseki said the public would continuously be briefed on the progress of the investigations.

He said:

“We want to call for calm from the public. We don’t want to preempt the outcome of police investigation but the police are actively doing their investigations.

There are a lot of speculations going around; some people suspect that the place is a quack morgue or a place for ritual purposes.

“People have been apprehended and they are undergoing questioning. Some people are still being looked for. The governor has given seven days for them to come back to us with the details of what they have found out. Was it just a morgue or is there any ritual involved? No conclusions have been reached yet so police will be allowed to do its work.

“We are going to continuously brief the public and we are also taking measures through the Ministry of Health to ensure that there is no public health crisis in that area. Edo is safe and there is no evidence yet that anything ritual is involved until the police are through with their investigation.”

On his part, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, SCID, Olawore Oluwole who is handling the investigation assured that the police would do a thorough job.

“So far, we are still looking for one of the suspects and efforts are being made to get him and his name is Otu Chukwu who is alleged to be the owner of the bungalow.

I want to appeal to all members of the public to remain calm as the command is assuring that everything will be done to ensure that all hidden facts are unraveled,” he added.

Man accidentally cuts off his testicles while dreaming about cutting meat

A man is in hospital for surgery after accidentally cutting his own testicles off while sleeping.

Ghanaian farmer Kofi Atta, 47, also known as Wofa Atta, dozed off in an armchair and said he managed to pick up a knife while sleeping and dreaming about cutting meat. In his sleep, he said he mistakenly cut his testicle.

Still in a dream-like state, the farmer from Assin Akomfede called for two neighbours who rushed to his house and found him alone, covered in blood. He was rushed to St Francis Xavier hospital in Assin Fosu.

Speaking to BBC Pidgin he said: “I was sitting in my chair when I dozed off. In my sleep, I dreamt that I was cutting some meat in front of me.

“I don’t remember how I picked up the knife, even I am confused.” He explained that he was still unsure of what had happened when his neighbours arrived, although he stood up and felt a sharp pain in his genitals.

Perhaps as a result of the loss of blood, Kofi only came out of the dream state when in hospital. That’s when he realised he hadn’t been chopping meat for a family meal, but rather his own testicles.

The victim’s wife, Adwoa Konadu, disclosed that the latest incident is not the first time her husband has carried out such activity while sleeping.

She said that he frequently moves, converses, and occasionally fights while he is asleep. It was during one of such episodes that Wofa Atta ended up damaging his genitals.

OnlyFans model accused of murdering Nigerian boyfriend requests his corpse be dug up

The OnlyFans star charged with the fatal stabbing of her Nigerian boyfriend has demanded that the corpse of her ex be dug up. Courtney Clenney, 25, known on social media as Courtney Tailor, was arrested in Hawaii last month and is currently awaiting extradition to Florida.

She will face a second degree murder charge following the death of her boyfriend, 27-year-old Christian Obumseli, in April.

She has always denied the murder and claims that she acted in self defence. Clenney allegedly stabbed the 27-year-old Obumseli in the chest on April 3 following a fight at their luxury apartment building in Miami, as neighbours in the building, said they had a long history of domestic disputes.

Clenney’s defense attorney, Frank Prieto, claimed that she was forced to stab Obumseli after he grabbed her by the throat following weeks of stalking the OnlyFans star.

Courtney’s attorney is set to take to the stand later today, Friday, August 19, to make an official request on his client’s behalf that Obumseli’s body be dug up and inspected by medical experts. At the time of her arrest, Mr Prieto said:

“I’m completely shocked, especially since we were cooperating with the investigation and offered to voluntarily surrender her if she were charged. “We look forward to clearing her name in court.”

Despite Prieto’s claims that Obumseli was violent towards Clenney, a friend of the couple claimed that Clenney had been violent against her estranged boyfriend in the past. Also, video footage released days ago shows Clenney hitting Obumseli in a lift.
