Only former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has won the award more times (11).

Liverpool announce Slot as Klopp’s successor

Liverpool have officially confirmed that Arne Slot will be their manager from the 2024/2025 season.

The Dutchman replaces Jurgen Klopp, who took charge of his last game on Sunday.

Slot will resume work on June 1 with the Premier League side.

He emerged as Liverpool’s top choice, after they missed out on Xabi Alonso and Ruben Amorim.

In April, Slot disclosed that Feyenoord and the Reds were in talks over a compensation package.

It is believed Liverpool have paid around £9.4million (£7.7m plus £1.7m in add-ons) for the 45-year-old.

“Liverpool Football Club can announce Arne Slot has agreed to a deal to become the club’s new head coach, formally taking up the position on June 1, 2024, subject to a work permit.

“The 45-year-old will join the Reds from Feyenoord ahead of the 2024-25 season after a deal was reached with the Eredivisie club for his services,” Liverpool said in a statement on Monday.

Manchester United decide Sofyan Amrabat’s transfer

Manchester United have decided not to make midfielder Sofyan Amrabat’s loan deal permanent following a lacklustre spell at the club, according to Football Insider.

The Morocco international, who joined on loan from Fiorentina for £8.5 million, will return to his parent club at the end of this season.

Amrabat, who gained significant attention after his impressive performances for Morocco in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, joined Man United last summer.

However, his time at Old Trafford was marred by an initial injury, limiting his early contributions.

When he did return, an injury crisis forced him into an unfamiliar left-back role, where he struggled to make an impact.

Throughout the season, the 27-year-old made only 20 league appearances with just nine starts, failing to secure a regular spot in manager Erik ten Hag’s lineup.

Despite a brief improvement in form, Amrabat did not do enough to convince the Red Devils to trigger the £21.4 million purchase option.

As Amrabat heads back to Fiorentina, Man United will now look to address their midfield needs, especially with Casemiro’s struggles, making their next midfield signing a crucial one.

Chelsea win Women’s Super League in Emma Hayes’s last game as manager

“In the meantime, I’d like to thank Roberto and his staff for all their hard work in the past two seasons. They all leave our club on good terms and with our very best wishes for the future.”

Similarly, De Zerbi noted how sad he was leaving the club.

“We have agreed to end my time at Brighton so that the club and I can continue to work in the way that suits each of us best, following our own ideas and visions, as well as our work and human values.

“I have really enjoyed an intense and challenging two years working in the Premier League, not least competing in four major competitions this season. Leaving now provides me with time to take a break before deciding on my future plans.”

Tottenham, Chelsea, Man United to fight for Europa, Conference League spots

Four Premier League teams will be fighting for European football on the last day of the season.

Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa have all qualified for next season’s Champions League.

But Tottenham, Chelsea, Newcastle and Manchester United are fighting for European qualification.

On Wednesday night, United beat Newcastle 3-2 and Chelsea won 2-1 at Brighton.

The result leaves Spurs in fifth (63points), Chelsea in sixth (60), Newcastle in seventh (57) and United in eighth (57).

The teams that finish fifth and sixth will qualify for the Europa League if Manchester City win the FA Cup.

In that instance, seventh would go into the Conference League.

However, if United win the FA Cup, they will qualify for the Europa League, as well as the team finishing fifth.

In that scenario, the side in sixth would play in the Conference League and the side in seventh would miss out on Europe.

But if United finish sixth and win the FA Cup, the Conference League place again moves down to the side finishing seventh.

On the last day of the campaign, Manchester United are away at Brighton, Chelsea welcome Bournemouth, Spurs travel to Sheffield United and Newcastle take on Brentford.

Nwabali contributed immensely to Nigeria’s second-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.

The 27-year-old is now a subject of interest from clubs outside South Africa.

World Cup-winning coach Menotti dies aged 85

Argentina’s World Cup-winning coach Cesar Luis Menotti has died aged 85.

Menotti led his country to victory on home soil in the 1978 tournament, beating the Netherlands 3-1 after extra time thanks to two goals from player of the tournament Mario Kempes.

“The Argentine Football Association regrets to report with great sadness the death of Cesar Luis Menotti, former world champion coach of Argentina,” said the AFA in a statement.

As a player, Menotti, a striker, played alongside Pele for Brazilian side Santos and won 11 international caps.

He then embarked on a coaching career which lasted 37 years including winning two trophies in a two-season spell with Barcelona and spells in Italy, Mexico, Uruguay and Argentina.

He took over the Argentina role in 1974 but there was controversy around the 1978 win after he opted not to include a 17-year-old Diego Maradona in the squad despite giving him his international debut the previous year.

But the following year, with Maradona in the squad, Menotti led Argentina to the Under-20 World Cup, beating the Soviet Union 3-1 in the final.

His reign ended after the 1982 World Cup in Spain where Argentina were eliminated by Brazil 3-1 in the second round with Maradona sent off.
