Suarez fires back at ex-Manchester United star after Uruguay defeated Brazil

Inter Miami striker, Luis Suarez, has fired back at former Manchester United player, Andreas Pereira after Uruguay defeated Brazil in the quarter final of the ongoing Copa America 2024 at the weekend.

Pereira had claimed before the quarter-final tie that Brazil had a “team that Uruguay dream of having.”

But when asked about Pereira’s comment after Uruguay knocked Brazil out of the Copa America 2024, Suarez told reporters: “We have the best midfielders in the world, top-level players.

“To talk about Uruguay, you have to have a little more respect, know the history of Uruguay.

“Before I say which players want to be on the Brazilian national team, I have to say that the person who made that comment was [Giorgian] De Arrascaeta’s reserve [at Flamengo], who is the best player in Brazilian football.

“So imagine what it’s like for us to hear that.”

Recall that Uruguay defeated Brazil on penalty shootout, thanks to Manuel Ugarte, who scored Uruguay’s decisive spot-kick after Eder Militao’s attempt was saved and Douglas Luiz hit the post.

After his big miss, co-commentator Murphy shared his thoughts on Ronaldo’s performance.

He told the BBC: “I’d be having conversations with the manager. It does seem ridiculous at times that he keeps Ronaldo on when he is having no impact.

“He [Goncalo Ramos] kind of must be thinking, what was he brought here for?” Murphy asked.

Manchester United unveil new home kit for 2024/25 season

Manchester United have revealed their new home kit for the upcoming 2024/25 season, featuring a bold design inspired by the club’s rich history.

Officially launched on Monday, the iconic red shirt now sports a striking gradient effect, complemented by white trim and white shorts.

The kit marks the beginning of a new sponsorship era for the Red Devils, with Snapdragon taking over as the main shirt sponsor.

This change comes after a lucrative £60million deal was struck with the American tech firm, replacing the previous sponsor, TeamViewer.

The kit’s designer, Adidas, has drawn inspiration from a unique “fluorescent” concept first introduced during the legendary Busby Babes era. This innovative design was originally conceived to help players spot each other more easily under floodlights.

Describing the concept, Adidas explained, “The rayon style fabric appeared to be a different shade of red, depending on how light reflected off it under the stadium’s floodlights. For the 2024-25 expression, bold combinations of red have been blended to form a light to dark red gradient, running down the main body of the shirt – giving the appearance of an ever-changing colour.”

The kit also features a distinctive flame-like red insert along the side panel of both the jersey and shorts.

According to Adidas, this element creates “a connecting line that stands out against the stadium backdrop as players are in motion.”

Perhaps most notably, the kit introduces “a colour expression never seen before on a Manchester United home kit,” further emphasising the club’s commitment to innovation while honouring its storied past.

Fans eager to don the new colours can now purchase the home kit, with adult shirts starting at £80.

NFF denies Osimhen’s ban from Super Eagles

The Nigeria Football Federation has described as false reports in some online mediums that it banned Super Eagles’ forward Victor Osimhen from the team, for his recent social media outburst against the ex-Head Coach of the team. Finidi George.

NFF General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, in a statement on Thursday, expressed amazement at the reports.

According to him, the federation has neither instructed a process nor has a process been concluded to ban the player from the national team.

He said, “The NFF hereby implores the media to join hands with the body to positively resolve issues and then focus on the big picture all the time, rather than needlessly escalate certain matters. There was no official communication from the NFF, yet some persons have gone to town to talk about a ban on Osimhen from the National Team. This is not good at all.’’

The general secretary said that the focus of the NFF was to get the Super Eagles on track in the 2025 AFCON and 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Mr Sanusi stated, “Our focus is to resolve matters around the Super Eagles and be able to look ahead with confidence to the 2025 AFCON qualifiers and the remaining six matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series. This is not the time to spread falsehood and foul the public space the more.”

Recall that Osimhen recently ranted on social media against Mr George a few hours after the latter resigned from the job.

Osimhen accused Mr George of allegedly questioning his commitment to the national team.

Arteta changes plans after Sesko snubs Arsenal

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, is set to prioritise the signing of a central midfielder after missing out on Benjamin Sesko.

After keeping their powder dry in January, the Gunners were keen to bring in a striker.

And 21-year-old Sesko quickly emerged as Arteta’s top target.

But the Slovenia international has now decided to sign a new contract with RB Leipzig.

According to The Athletic, this has forced Arsenal to change their transfer plans.

Strengthening in midfield is now a priority, with Arteta likely to target a No.6.

The club signed Declan Rice for a record £105million last year, but his marauding performances have convinced Arteta to give the England star a permanent license to roam.

Marc Brys may replace Finidi George as Super Eagles head coach

The Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, is considering current Cameroon national team coach, Marc Brys, as a potential replacement for Finidi George, according to Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad.

Brys has constantly clashed with Cameroon’s FA chief, Samuel Eto’o.

The Belgian coach was dismissed by Eto’o last month, only to be reinstated a few days before the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Angola and Cape Verde.

As per the report, the 62-year-old had not denied the rumours linking him with the vacant Nigeria job.

Brys insists he feels good with the Indomitable Lions despite the ongoing feud with the Fecafoot president.

Marc Brys had previously coached Germinal Beerschot, Mouscron, FC Eindhoven, Den Bosch, KV Mechelen, Al-Faisaly FC, Al-Raed, Sint-Truiden and OH Leuven.

The NFF are looking to bring in a foreign technical adviser for the three-time African champions, following a poor start to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

After four rounds of matches in Group C, the Super Eagles find themselves in fifth place.

Finidi, who replaced Jose Peseiro as head coach of the national team, resigned following the NFF’s decision to appoint an expatriate Technical Adviser.
