Mbappe accuses French federation boss of ignoring racist abuse

France international Kylian Mbappe on Sunday accused the president of the French Football Federation (FFF) of ignoring racist abuse after his penalty miss at Euro 2020.

The Paris Saint-Germain star’s decisive spot-kick against Switzerland was saved in the last-16 shootout, resulting in the world champions exiting the tournament.

The 23-year-old was vilified on social media by furious fans, and even considered quitting the national team as a result.

In an interview with a Sunday newspaper, FFF president Noel Le Graet spoke of the lack of support Mbappe had felt after the Euro elimination.

Le Graet said β€œhe (Mbappe) considered that the federation had not defended him after his missed penalty and the criticism on social media networks”.

β€œWe saw seen each other for five minutes in my office,” continued Le Graet, adding the striker β€œno longer wanted to play in the French team – which he obviously did not think”.

On Sunday, Mbappe responded on Twitter, regretting that Le Graet had not taken into account the β€œracism” of which he would have been a victim.

β€œYes finally I explained to him (Le Graet) above all that it was in relation to racism, and NOT to the penalty,” Mbappe said.

β€œBut he considered that there had been no racism…”

Le Graet had already come under fire last September after declaring that racism in football β€œdoes not exist or hardly exists”.

A few months before the Paris prosecutor’s office announced it was investigating racist messages towards certain French international players after the Euros.

On Saturday, FIFA published a report pointing to the increase in the number of insults against footballers on social media.

According to this study, 38 percent of them were racist in nature.

Arsenal ready to break bank to splash €100m on Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen.

Premier League side, Arsenal are reportedly preparing to make a second offer for Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen,  to match the €100m (Β£86m) price tag, Napoli are asking for the 23-year-old.

This comes after Gunners’ first €60m bid was rejected by the Italian club on Monday, June 13.Β

According to Italian daily, La Gazzetta dello Sport, Arsenal are keen to sign the 23-year-old Nigeria international as a replacement for former skipper Alexandre Lacazette, who rejoined Lyon on a free this summer.

β€œArsenal are gearing up to enter talks with Napoli for Osimhen and are keen to sign the €100m valued striker. Manchester United are also keen on a move but the Gunners hold the edge for the time being,” the report said.

β€œThe deal could be concluded later this month, allowing Napoli to immediately reinvest the funds and carry out a decent transfer window.”

The striker, who scored 18 times and made six assists in 32 games last season, is also attracting interest from other top European clubs.

‘I’m not sure if I will be jailed or killed for these words, but I am speaking as it is’ – Β Former Russia captain, Igor Denisov says as heΒ criticizesΒ Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Former captain of the Russian football team, Igor Denisov, has criticized Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine describing it as a ‘catastrophic.’

The Russian parliament recently passed legislation that could see dissenters against the country’s military action jailed for up to 15 years.

But Denisov, 38, a former defensive midfielder who captained the Russian team between 2012 and 2016, shunned the new legislation to criticize the ongoing brutal conflict.

‘These events are catastrophic,’ Denisov told Nobel. ‘It’s horrific. I am not sure if I will be jailed or killed for these words, but I am speaking as it is.’

He added that he no longer feels any pride in his country and even wrote to President Putin asking for him to halt the war, which has seen thousands killed and millions more driven from their homes.

Denisov, who played for Russian clubs Zenit Saint Petersburg, Dynamo Moscow and Lokomotiv Moscow during his club career, was an influential player for the national team.

He played 54 times for Russia between 2008 and 2016, representing them at the 2012 European Championship and the 2014 World Cup.

Russia have been banned from playing in international competitions as a result of the invasion of Ukraine, with their club sides also banned from European competitions such as the Champions League.

Last week, Jose Peseiro’s men beat Sierra Leone 2-1 in Abuja to open their 2023 AFCON qualifier account.

Following the outcome of today’s game, the Super Eagles now top the Group A standings with six points followed by Guinea Bissau on three but with a game at hand.

Peseiro eyes AFCON qualifiers group top spot.

Super EaglesΒ coach is hopeful of upstaging Guinea Bissau at the top of Group A of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, after their clash against island country Sao Tome and Principe on Monday (today).

The game comes up in Marrakech, Morocco after the Sao Tomeans couldn’t present a suitable home venue for the qualification series.

The Eagles beat a stubborn Sierra Leone side 2-1 in their first game of the qualifiers in Abuja on Thursday but are placed second on goals difference after Guinea Bissau hammered Sao Tome 5-1 in their opening tie in Marrakech.

Speaking ahead of the tie against the Sao Tomeans, Peseiro said with his side’s pedigree, they deserved to occupy the top spot in Group A and would do so with a convincing style against their less-fancied opponents today.

β€œYes, we want to be at the top of the table, that is why we must fight hard against every opponent and we must commit ourselves fully to winning every match. Like I said last week, Nigeria have a huge pedigree with quality players. It’s very important that we select the best at all times to win the big games,” Peseiro said.

AFCON 2023: Super Eagles Labour To Beat Sierra Leone In Abuja.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Thursday achieved a 2-1 victory over Sierra Leone in a Day 1 encounter of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification series at the MKO Abiola Stadium on Thursday.
The Leone Stars, who fought gallantly to come back from four goals down to tie the match 4-4 in an AFCON qualifier against Nigeria in Benin City in November 2021, showed they mean business as early as the 4th minute when a rasping shot from Mohamed Turay was tipped over the bar by Francis Uzoho.
Two minutes later, a good pass by Aribo was followed by a teasing cross from Calvin Bassey but Victor Osimhen’s header failed to find the target.Β  In the 10th minute, a brilliant pass from Sadiq Umar found Osimhen, whose shot drifted away.
At the other end, just a minute after, Jonathan Morsay scored a stunning goal with a diving header from a beautiful cross by Musa Kamara.

Four minutes later, the advantage could have been stretched for the visitors when they hit the upright on another counter-attack.
However, in the 16th minute, Nigeria were level when an exchange of passes between Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon ended with the former emphatically finding the far corner of goalkeeper Mohamed Kamara’s post.
Three minutes later, Kamara saved a strong Moses Simon header, and in the 35th minute, Musa Kamara came close with a stinging grounder as the visitors swarmed forward once more.
Four minutes before halftime, Osimhen scored Nigeria’s second when he drove the ball into the roof of the net from a Simon header off Ola Aina’s cross from the right.
In the second half, the game flowed from one end to the other, but Nigeria should have made it 3-1 in the 58th minute when Iwobi ansd Osimhen carved open the visitors’ defence, only for Samuel Chukwueze to get too much purchase on his shot and drag it wide.
Aribo, Osimhen and substitute Ademola Lookman all missed chances as Nigeria pushed for another goal, but in added time, it took Aribo’s last-second intervention to deny the Leone Stars.
The Eagles pocket three points and are top of Group A, as they head to Agadir, Morocco for their Day 2 encounter against the β€˜The Falcons and True Parrots’of SΓ£o TomΓ© and PrΓncipe on Monday evening.

Liverpool confirm departure of Origi, Karius, five others

Liverpool have confirmed the departure of seven players, including striker Divock Origi, when their contracts expire at the end of this month.

Goalkeeper Loris Karius and former first-team players Sheyi Ojo and Ben Woodburn have also been released, along with three members of the club’s academy.

Origi spent eight years at Merseyside and sealed the Reds’ stunning second-leg comeback to sink Barcelona 4-3 on aggregate in the UEFA Champions League semi-final in 2019.

Announcing the Belgian’s departure, Liverpool wrote, β€œDivock Origi will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of June.

β€œThank you for an incredible eight years of service and leaving us with so many special memories. [Divock Origi], Liverpool legend.”

Karius became notorious for his error-strewn performance in the 2018 UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid, and spent much of his subsequent Anfield career on loan.

Ojo made 13 senior appearances, scoring in the FA Cup win over Exeter.

Woodburn became the club’s youngest goalscorer β€” a title he still holds β€” when he scored in the League Cup match against Leeds United at the age of 17.

Gattuso joins Valencia on two-year deal

Gennaro Gattuso has been appointed as head coach of Valencia on a deal until June 2024.

The AC Milan legend replaces Jose Bordalas, who was dismissed just one season into a two-year contract.

This was after a campaign in which Valencia finished ninth and lost the Copa del Rey final to Real Betis.

Valencia said Gattuso β€œjoins the club following an extensive career both as a player and as a coach.

β€œAfter hanging up the boots, he started his coaching career in 2012 with teams like AC Milan and SSC Napoli, with whom he won the Coppa Italia in 2020.”

Gattuso spent 18 months in charge of the Rossoneri after being appointed in November 2017.

They narrowly missed out on UEFA Champions League qualification by a solitary point during his one full season in charge.

He later took over Napoli, who he led to Coppa Italia glory in the 2019/2020 season.

But Gattuso departed a year later after again missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification.

The 44-year-old was appointed Fiorentina boss in May last year, only for the two parties to rescind that agreement a month later.

Gattuso has also had spells in charge of Sion, Palermo, OFI Crete and Pisa before re-joining AC Milan β€” initially with their Primavera side.

As a player, Gattuso won two Serie A titles and two UEFA Champions League medals during a glittering 13-year stay with AC Milan.

He was also a FIFA World Cup winner with Italy in 2006.

Robert Lewandowski has announced his desire to leave Bayern this summer, whilst there are also doubts over the futures of Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane at the German club.

Sterling has previously spoken of a desire to play abroad and with Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez arriving at Manchester City to increase competition this summer, could decide on a new challenge after seven seasons with the club.

CHELSEA CONFIRM CLUB TAKEOVER BY TODD BOEHLY-LED CONSORTIUM

Chelsea have today confirmed the long-awaited news that the club has been taken over by a consortium led by Todd Boehly.

The Blues have been searching for new owners since Roman Abramovich was sanctioned by the British government for his alleged links to Vladimir Putin over the invasion of Ukraine.

And, in that time, a consortium led by Todd Boehly has emerged as the next suitor, with a takeover finally happening for upwards of Β£4bn for the west London outfit.

It makes Chelsea the most expensive club ever to be sold across any sport, and will see the Blues usher in a new era.

What the Blues said

In a statement, the club wrote:

β€˜The consortium led by Todd Boehly, chairman and CEO of Eldridge, and Clearlake Capital Group, L.P. (together with its affiliates, β€œClearlake”), today announced completion of the ownership transfer of Chelsea Football Club (β€œChelsea FC” or β€œthe Club”). The consortium also includes HansjΓΆrg Wyss, founder of the Wyss Foundation, and Mark Walter, co-founder and CEO of Guggenheim Capital. Walter and Boehly are owners of the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Los Angeles Sparks. The transaction has received all necessary approvals from The Government of the United Kingdom, The Premier League, and other authorities.

Under the terms of the agreement, Boehly and Clearlake will share joint control and equal governance of the Club. Boehly will serve as Chairman of the holding company.’

Meanwhile, Boehly added:

β€œWe are honoured to become the new custodians of Chelsea Football Club”

β€œWe’re all in – 100% β€” every minute of every match. Our vision as owners is clear: we want to make the fans proud. Along with our commitment to developing the youth squad and acquiring the best talent, our plan of action is to invest in the Club for the long-term and build on Chelsea’s remarkable history of success.”

β€œI personally want to thank ministers and officials in the British government, and the Premier League, for all their work in making this happen.”

Erik ten Hag has been unveiled at Old Trafford, as new Manchester United manager.

Erik ten Hag has been unveiled by Manchester United at Old Trafford as the club’s new manager.

On Monday morning, May 23, Ten Hag was shown around the stadium by director of football John Murtough, ahead of his press conference.

Another picture showed Ten Hag holding Manchester United’s 2021/22 season kit and posing for the cameras.

Speaking to the club website, Ten Hag said: β€œI would say the word β€˜exciting’. I really look forward to doing this job, at this club with massive history, and we want to restore it where it belongs.”

The Dutchman replaces Ralf Rangnick, who was the interim manager after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fired.

United finished in sixth place this past season and have just gone five years without winning any silverware.

Ten Hag believes United are better than the league position this past season suggested, adding: β€œAlso know one year ago, this club, this team was second in the Premier League. There’s potential and now it’s up to us to get that out. It’s a process, it will take time but I’m convinced we will come to that point where we get success. We have to work hard and it has to be based on the right philosophy and strategy.”

Liverpool Sign Fulham Forward Fabio Carvalho.

Liverpool have finally completed the signing of Fulham forward Fabio Carvalho after failing in a bid to bring the 19-year-old to Anfield in January, the Premier League runners-up announced on Monday.

The Portuguese teenager, who is understood to have signed a five-year contract, will officially join the Anfield club on July 1.

Carvalho, out of contract at the end of June, was set for a move four months ago on deadline day when a Β£5 million ($6.3 million) deal was agreed with the Championship winners but the transfer window closed without a medical and formal paperwork being concluded.

Liverpool have reportedly agreed to pay extra in add-ons and attach a 20 percent sell-on clause.

Carvalho played a key role in Fulham’s promotion back to the Premier League, scoring 10 goals and providing eight assists in 36 games as Marco Silva’s side won the Championship title.

He made his debut for Portugal U21s in March, having previously represented England at youth level.

Carvalho’s arrival will add another fresh face to Liverpool’s dynamic forward line, already boosted by the arrival of Luis Diaz in January.

Long-serving Belgium forward Divock Origi has not played enough matches to trigger a contract extension and was given a send-off at Anfield after Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Wolves.

Origi missed the match with a muscle injury and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed he had played his last game for the club as he would not be fit for Saturday’s Champions League final against Real Madrid.
