Barcelona are reportedly set to prioritise sellingΒ Frenkie de JongΒ this summer after agreeing a transfer withΒ Leeds UnitedΒ forΒ Raphinha.
The Catalan giants have been pursuing the Brazilian throughout the transfer window, competing with Chelsea for his signature, with the Blues agreeing a fee with Leeds for the winger.
While Barcelona initially failed to make a suitable offer, they decided to match Chelsea’s offer of Β£60m up front with a further Β£5m in add-ons.
The bid should open the door for a move to Camp Nou for Raphinha who regards Barcelona as his preferred destination.
While Raphinha could be on his way in, according to the Mirror, Barcelona will turn their focus to offloading Frenkie de Jong, who has been linked with a transfer to Manchester United.
United manager Erik ten Hag is keen to reunite with the player he once managed at Ajax, although De Jong has expressed a desire to remain at Camp Nou.
The midfielder is also owed Β£17m in unpaid wages, which is proving to be a stumbling block in a potential transfer, although Barcelona are confident that they can come to an agreement with De Jong over the matter.
De Jong, who has four years remaining on his current contract, has made 130 appearances for Barcelona.
Manchester United Β manager Erik ten Hag has been channelling his inner Sir Alex Ferguson during his first two weeks at the club.
Ferguson was renowned for being a strict disciplinarian during his 26 years in charge of United and Ten Hag also takes no prisoners.
According to The Daily Mirror, the 52-year-old has already made his players aware of the rules that they must follow under his regime.
The report states that any player that turns up late for training or team meetings will be dropped from the United team and there are no exceptions.
Thereβs a ban on alcohol during game weeks and players will have a monthly BMI check-up, as well as having a custom-made diet plan drawn up.
The managerΒ has also asked that his players come to see him if they have any issues rather than going to their agents.Β
United are currently in Thailand for the first part of their pre-season tour and will face Premier League rivals Liverpool in a friendly tomorrow.
Ten Hag oversaw a training drill ahead of the game and some of his players were forced to do push-ups after Zidane Iqbal scored against them.
βItβs been great, obviously a lot of hard work and a lot of tough sessions. But thatβs how it should be during a pre-season to get the fitness levels up,β defender Victor Lindelof recently told Sky Sports.
βTraining sessions have been really good, [Ten Hag] demands a lot from us and expects us to perform at a high level. Itβs been great.
βWe want to play good football β want to have the ball and attack as well. Weβve been working a lot on different things during training sessions
βObviously he knows how he wants to play with the ball and without the ball, so of course weβve been working on a lot of different things during these two weeks.β
Former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand, has said the club will only allow Cristiano Ronaldo to leave if they can sign Robert Lewandowski as a replacement.
Ronaldo has asked the Premier League side to listen to offers for him, as he is desperate to play for a team in the Champions League next season.
The 37-year-old has not joined the rest of the squad for their preseason tour of Thailand and Australia, amid speculation he wants his future sorted quickly.
Ferdinand has now said he does not see Ronaldo leaving United, except they bring in a big name striker.
βI canβt even think about that because you have to look at the whole situation. Itβs getting on in the window and, if United were to let him go, [Erling] Haaland and [Darwin] Nunez, probably the first two on your list, have gone to clubs.
βThe only other person who could fill into those shoes, who Iβd have confidence in, whoβs possibly capable of doing it, is [Robert] Lewandowski.
βThe only way I see it happening is if United can get Lewandowski and then Ronaldo could go then. If United canβt get a ready-made replacement to bang in 20 or 25 goals next season outside of Lewandowski or somebody [else] gettable, I donβt see it being a deal that gets done, not at all,β Ferdinand said on his FIVE podcast.
Switzerland’s Federal Criminal Court in the southern city of Bellinzona acquitted the pair in a trial.
Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini, once the chiefs of world and European football, were cleared Friday over a suspected fraudulent payment that shook the sport and torpedoed their time at the top.
Switzerland’s Federal Criminal Court in the southern city of Bellinzona acquitted the pair in a trial following a mammoth investigation that began in 2015 and lasted six years.
Former FIFA president Blatter, 86, and Platini, 67, listened in silence as the clerk read out the judgement which rejected the prosecution’s request for a suspended prison sentence of a year and eight months.
“A neutral court has finally found that no offence has been committed in this case. My client is completely cleared and relieved as a result,” said Platini’s lawer Dominic Nellen.
Former French football great Platini released a short statement claiming to have “won the first round”, while alluding to alleged political and judicial manipulation intended to remove him from power.
“In this case, there are culprits who did not appear during this trial. Let them count on me: we will find one other,” he said.
Platini was employed as an adviser to Blatter between 1998 and 2002.
Blatter told the court that when he took over as FIFA president in 1998, world football’s governing body had a bad record and he thought someone who had been a top figure in playing the game could help.
He turned to Platini for advice, which involved political trips, reforming the international calendar and helping the national federations financially.
They signed a contract in 1999 for an annual remuneration of 300,000 Swiss francs, which was paid in full by FIFA.
But the pair were tried over a two million Swiss franc ($2.05 million) payment in 2011 to Platini, who was then in charge of European football’s governing body UEFA.
– ‘Gentleman’s agreement’ –
Former world football chief Blatter told the court that the pair had struck a “gentleman’s agreement” for Platini to be paid a million Swiss francs a year.
Platini had jokingly asked Blatter for a million, without specifying the currency, and the then-FIFA president agreed, with part of the money — outside of the contract they signed — to be paid “later”, the court heard.
The remainder would be settled when FIFA’s fragile finances allowed it, Blatter said, in a deal concluded orally and without witnesses.
Platini was accused of having submitted to FIFA in 2011 an allegedly fictitious invoice for a claimed debt still outstanding for his advisory work.
Both were accused of fraud and forgery of a document. Blatter was accused of misappropriation and criminal mismanagement, while Platini was accused of participating in those offences.
Blatter and Platini maintained their innocence throughout their trial, which ran from June 8 to 22.
But the court considered that the fraud was “not established with a likelihood bordering on certainty”, and therefore applied the general principle of criminal law according to which “the doubt must benefit the accused”.
The indictment was filed by the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland.
Both FIFA and UEFA are headquartered in Switzerland, in Zurich and Nyon respectively.
– Power drama –
Platini and Blatter were banned from the sport at the very moment when the former seemed ideally-placed to succeed Blatter at the helm of world football’s governing body.
The two allies became rivals as Platini grew impatient to take over, while Blatter’s tenure was brought to a swift end by a separate 2015 FIFA corruption scandal investigated by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Joseph “Sepp” Blatter joined FIFA in 1975, became its general secretary in 1981 and the president of world football’s governing body in 1998.
He was forced to stand down in 2015 and was banned by FIFA for eight years, later reduced to six, over ethics breaches for authorising the payment to Platini, allegedly made in his own interests rather than FIFA’s.
Platini is regarded among world football’s greatest-ever players. He won the Ballon d’Or, considered the most prestigious individual award, three times — in 1983, 1984 and 1985.
Platini was UEFA’s president from January 2007 to December 2015.
He appealed against his initial eight-year suspension at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which reduced it to four years.
Spain manager Jorge Vilda has vowed his team will come together and ‘fight even more’ after star player Alexia Putellas was ruled out of Euro 2022 on the eve of the tournament with an ACL injury.
Spain are heralded as many people’s favourites at this summer’s European Championship after enjoying sustained success at youth level for the past decade, breezing through qualifying and boasting the spine of the Barcelona team in their 23-player squad.
However, their chances of lifting a maiden major trophy suffered a setback on Tuesday when Putellas injured her left knee in training. Tests revealed it to be an ACL rupture, and the playmaker was forced to withdraw from the squad just three days before Spain’s Euro 2022 campaign kicks off.
βThe day before yesterday was not the best: it was a big shock, a huge blow for everyone: for the team and for [Alexia], thinking about what sheβs going to miss,β Vilda said.
“But the next day, 48 hours before our first match, the team met, it came together, united and made a promise. We canβt let the sadness and anger over what has happened [affect us]. There is no choice but to come together, be stronger, and fight even more.”
Spain’s Euro 2022 hopes had already been dealt a blow in June when all-time top scorer Jenni Hermoso was ruled out of the tournament after spraining a ligament in her knee, with Putellas adding to her side’s injury absentees.
La Roja begin their Euro 2022 campaign on Friday against Finland, and Vilda admitted while Putellas’ loss was one felt by the team, he was confident he still possessed a squad capable of competing in her absence.
βItβs not just football; itβs about the group too. Hers is an absence we feel,” the Spain coach said of Putellas. “But I want to show total confidence in the 23 players we have: there are alternatives and quite a few players who can play on the inside left of midfield.
“Our philosophy comes above all else and we have 23 players who can play that way perfectly.β
Trying to sum up Peleβs life after football is quite difficult.
Since retiring as a professional footballer in 1977, Pele has been appointed a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and Brazilβs Extraordinary Minister for Sport, received an honorary Knighthood from the Queen, published books, appeared in films, conducted soundtracks, sued Samsung, advertised Viagra and done plenty, plenty more.
But it was with great surprise we recently stumbled upon an article which revealed Pele, the Great Pele, was once appointed scout at Fulham.
Hang on a minuteβ¦what? Pele? One of the greatest footballers of all time, Pele? Three-time World Cup winner, Pele?
The man who claims to have scored over 1,000 goals (if you include friendlies, five-a-side in training and kickabouts in the backgarden), Pele? The man who had a cameo in Mike Bassett: England Manager, Pele?
He might have discovered aliens in the 1969 TV Show Os Estranhos, but we couldnβt quite believe Pele had scouted for Fulham.
Alas, a quick Google search confirms it is indeed true. On October 9, 2002, the BBC published an article which declared: βFootball legend Pele has agreed to help Fulham scout for emerging Brazilian talent.β
The seven-time Ballon dβOr winner was quoted as saying: βThere are many Brazilian players playing all over the world right now, especially in Holland, Spain and Italy. But, in England, there are so few and I am sure we can change that.
βI am hoping that one day we will have skilful Brazilian players turning out for Fulham and to do that we must plan. I think that can happen because my club Santos produces a lot of good players.β
It was, in fact, not Peleβs first association with Fulham. In the 1960s and 70s, Santos would tour Europe like footballβs equivalent of the Harlem Globetrotters, with Pele undoubtedly the star attraction.
In 1973, the final year the Brazilian outfit embarked on such a tour, Santos were beaten 2-1 by Fulham at Craven Cottage, with Pele grabbing their only goal from the spot.
As noted by the This Day in Football History website: βIt was a hard-fought victory for the hosts; post-match reports described the Fulham players as looking exhausted, while the Brazilians appeared to have barely broken a sweat.β
That night ended in acrimony when Santos, who had agreed a share of the gate receipts with Fulham, accused the hosts of fiddling the crowd numbers.
But 29 years later, Pele was back in west London, tasked by chairman Mohamed Al-Fayed with finding Fulham some of the best Brazilian players to complement a disparate group of players which contained the likes of Steve Finnan, Barry Hayles, Steed Malbranque and Louis Saha.
Al-Fayed had high hopes for the appointment, saying: βIt is fantastic for Fulham. Pele is the greatest of all time β a true legend. So who better to have scouting for us in Brazil?β
As it transpired, there were probably better options to have scouting in Brazil. No samba stars arrived the following summer, although Fulham did sign a 42-year-old Dave Beasant on a free transfer from Brighton.
While there is no record of when Pele left his role, the Cottagers did not sign a Brazilian player until 2016, when Lucas Piazon arrived on loan from Chelsea.
But still, Pele, that Pele, scouting for Fulham. Is there anything that man canβt do?
Danny Drinkwater has said he is relieved his Chelsea nightmare has ended.
According to the midfielder, he wasted some of what could have been his best years at Stamford Bridge as a footballer.
The 32-year-old, who was a key figure in Leicester Cityβs title-winning side during the 2015/16 season, moved to Chelsea in 2017 for Β£35m, signing a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge.
However, it did not work out for Drinkwater, who made just 23 appearances for the club, scoring just a single goal.
When asked if he feels like heβs wasted the best five years of his career, Drinkwater told Sky Sports: βYeah, it feels like βwhat have you thrown those five years away?β
βIf youβd stayed at Leicester, if you didnβt get injured and if the club treated you differently.
βTheyβre all ifs. Itβs frustrating, 100 per cent. Donβt think Iβm still not burning about how itβs gone. I still kick myself for it. But on the other side, am I going to keep kicking myself, because I canβt change it.β
Gabby Agbonlahor believes Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel would rather sign Raphinha or Raheem Sterling over Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Blues are in the hunt for a new forward this summer and recently emerged asΒ contendersΒ to land wantaway Manchester United superstar Ronaldo.
The 37-year-old has asked to leave Old Trafford this summer and, although the Premier League side are reluctant to sanction a move, eyes have already turned to the legendary goalscorerβs next destination.
New Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is thought to be interested in a deal for Ronaldo, having held talks with his representatives, but an official bid could rely on Tuchelβs approval.
It is understood the German is an admirer of Ronaldo, but questions linger over how the Portugal sensation would fit in Chelseaβs system.
The Blues could do with a striker following the loan exit of Romelu Lukaku to Inter, but appear to be focused on deals for Leeds forward Raphinha and Manchester City winger Sterling.
And according to Villa legend Agbonlahor, Raphinha and Sterling make more sense for Tuchel than Ronaldo.
Agbonlahor told talkSPORT: βI think [Ronaldo] would definitely be a good fit β but I donβt see it happening.
βHe would not want a big ego like Ronaldo coming in and wanting to play every game.
βHe would rather go and get Raphinha and Sterling, players who arenβt bigger than the manager or the club.
βFor me, Tuchel would definitely not want Ronaldo.
βBut if it comes from above him and the owners want him, then maybe something could happen.β
Cristiano Ronaldo, who has missed the last two days of pre-season training, has been heavily criticised for his desire to leave Manchester United this summer.
Following what was a dismal season for Manchester United, Cristiano Ronaldo has been heavily linked with a United exit of late.
Ronaldo joined Manchester United for a second time last summer, leaving Serie A giants, Juventus.
The Portuguese has since endured a mixed stint in Manchester. The legendary hitman scored 18 in 30 league ties last term and netted six in the Champions League.
However, whilst Ronaldo continued to shine at aged 37, Manchester United as a club experienced one of the worst seasons in their storied history.
This would see Manchester United miss out on a place in the Champions League for the forthcoming season.
And this, along with Unitedβs floundering in the transfer market, is said to have led to Ronaldo wanting to leave the club.
But whilst a CR7 exit would leave Manchester United very, very light up top heading into the new season, former striker Gabriel Agbonlahor does not see Ronaldo leaving as a bad thing.
Instead, Agbonlahor suggested Ronaldo doesnβt care about United, but also that Erik ten Hag will probably be happy with the Portugueseβs decision:
βIf there is something better for Ronaldo, he will go, he will drop Man United immediately, he doesnβt care,β he said.
βIβm sure itβs very disappointing for Man United fans and heβs ruining his legacy. When they needed him Man United fans will remember that he jumped ship.
βEven Ten Hag, he is probably buzzing deep down. Heβs probably delighted because he wouldnβt have started him too much next season anyway.β
Bayern MunichΒ are reportedly preparing a β¬120m bid for Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen,Β Corriere dello SportΒ reports.
The Bavarians see the 23-year-old Nigerian as an ideal replacement for Robert Lewandowski, who is on the verge of departing the Allianz Arena this summer.
Lewandowski, who has a year left on his contract, is keen to join Spanish giants, Barcelona.
Osimhen has been impressive for the Partenopei since his arrival two years ago from Ligue 1 outfit Lille and the Partenopei are aware of the interest from other clubs, but are not ready to let him leave for any amount less than β¬100m, having signed him for a club and African record fee of β¬75m.
Premier League clubs Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle United are also reportedly interested in the striker who has three years left on his contract with Napoli.
The Nigerian has netted 24 times and provided eight assists in 51 league appearances for the Naples side.
Last season, Osimhen scored 14 goals and recorded five assists in 27 appearances in the Serie A in the concluded 2021/2022 season.
He also netted four goals and one assist in the Europa League for Napoli, who finished third in Serie A last season with 79 points from 38 games.
Meanwhile, former Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has urged Bayern to sign Osimhen should Lewandowski leave, saying he will need little time to adapt to the Bundesliga environment.
βIf Bayern let Robert Lewandowski go, Victor would be a good alternative,β Rohr told Sports Bild.
βI think he would prevail in Munich. Since he already has experience in the Bundesliga and speaks a little German, his adjustment period is, of course, shorter than with other players from abroad,β Rohr added.β
Custard brand manufacturer, Checkers Africa Limited, has promised to continue to encourage talent hunt for footballers among its employees and members of the public.
The firmβs Managing Director, Mr Karan Checker, according to a statement on Thursday, made the commitment at the 2022 edition of the companyβs one-day football tourney tagged Checkers Custard Football Cup, recently.
With the maiden edition held in 2021, Checker said it became evident that the football competition, among other activities, was a panacea for employeesβ bonding, good health and general wellness.
He said the competition not only induced more beneficial interaction among the workforce, but also helped promote quality work environment for better output.
Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo has stated that his wait for a league title in his professional career took 17 years.
Ighalo won the Saudi Pro League with Al-Hilal on Monday night finishing as the leagueβs highest goal scorer with 24 goals.
Expressing his gratitude for winning his first league title, the former Manchester United striker took to his Instagram page to share the win with words of encouragement.
βI waited 17 years before winning my first league title, it doesnβt matter how long it takes, if you keep working hard and never give up, you will get it right one day. God is the greatest,β he wrote.
Ighalo, who started his professional career with defunct Julius Berger FC, Lagos, has played club football in six countries across Europe and Asia without winning a league title.
The former Watford star has, however, won the highest goal scorer award at different clubs he had played.
Romelu Lukaku said he was βvery happyβ to be back after the Belgian international striker arrived in Milan on Wednesday ahead of his return to Inter Milan on loan from Chelsea.
A beaming Lukaku emerged from Linate airport in the early hours of Wednesday morning and gave his short but delighted response to the handful of reporters awaiting his arrival.
The 29-year-old will undergo a medical later in the day before making his long-awaited Inter comeback official.
Chelsea agreed to a reported deal in which Inter will pay an initial β¬8 million plus a further potential three million euros in bonuses for the loan.
Lukaku will again lead Interβs attack as they attempt to regain the Serie A title after taking a pay cut β a reported 8.5 million euros for the coming campaign.
Lukaku leaves London after failing to make an impression for a second time at Chelsea, not meeting high expectations following a Β£97.5 million move from Inter last summer.
He had made himself a fan favourite over two years at Inter after scoring 64 times in 95 games and driving them to their first Serie A title in over a decade, the 2021 Scudetto ending both an 11-year drought and Juventusβ grip on Italian football.
However, the financial problems of Interβs owners the Suning Group, exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic led to coach Antonio Conte leaving the club almost as soon as the title was won.
He claimed the cost-cutting required by Inter would have prevented him from building the team he wanted to challenge domestically and in Europe.
Lukaku followed Conte out the door after then European champions Chelsea offered a whopping sum which eased some of Interβs financial issues and started well on his return to Stamford Bridge.
Coach Thomas Tuchel said βhe was the type of guy we were missingβ after he netted four times in his first four games, but his next goal didnβt come until early December and injury, Covid-19 and poor form kept him out of the team.
He then infuriated Chelsea fans by conducting an interview with Sky Sport Italia in which he expressed his unhappiness and said he had Inter in his heart and wanted to return.
Those comments also led Interβs hardcore ultras to say they werenβt interested in having him back, considering his move to Chelsea a betrayal of his claim to love the Milanese club.
They told other fans not to arrive en masse to welcome Lukaku back as he is now βjust one of manyβ after previously being βtreated like a kingβ by supporters.
Lukaku will be critical to coach Simone Inzaghiβs bid to snatch back the league crown from AC Milan after they finished two points behind their local rivals last term.
French interior minister Gerald Darmanin has apologised to βeveryone who suffered from bad managementβ at the 2021/2022 UEFA Champions League final match in Paris.
However, the 39-year-old, who had previously made outlandish claims about the number of counterfeit tickets in circulation at the Stade de France, stopped short of saying sorry to the Liverpool fans.
He had blamed them for the problems on the night of the clubβs defeat to Real Madrid.
βShould the Stade de France have been better managed? The answer is `yesβ,β he said, following the incidence of supporters being locked out and then tear-gassed after serious congestion problems developed.
βAm I partly responsible? The answer is `yesβ. Of course, I readily apologise to everyone who suffered from this bad management of the event.β
After the match, supporters complained of being robbed by local gangs, with the police offering no protection.
The police had earlier employed heavy-handed methods in an attempt to deal with the growing crowd issue.
Darmanin said they had learned from that and Franceβs two recent UEFA Nations League matches and the Top 14 rugby final at the stadium all passed off without any major incident.
βIt profoundly changed the organisation of the police headquarters,β he added.
βI changed the organisation to fight against delinquency because, if there was something that went wrong at the Stade de France, it was the fight against delinquency.β
Earlier this month the interior minister apologised to a French Senate committee hearing for βthe disproportionate use of tear gasβ.
But his claims that 35,000 and 40,000 supporters without tickets or fake tickets were present around the Stade de France were debunked by a UEFA official.
The official had said UEFAβs count of counterfeits was closer to 2,600.
Chelsea legend, Petr Cech will leave his role as Technical and Performance Advisor at the club on June 30.
Cech is the latest to leave the club following the Todd Boehly-Clearlake takeover after the departures of chairman Bruce Buck and director Marina Granovskaia.
Cech said: “It has been a huge privilege to perform this role at Chelsea for the past three years. With the club under new ownership, I feel now is the right time for me to step aside. I am pleased that the club is now in an excellent position with the new owners, and I am confident of its future success both on and off the pitch.”
Todd Boehly, chairman and co-controlling owner, said: “Petr is an important member of the Chelsea family. We understand his decision to step away and thank him for his contributions as an advisor and his commitment to the club and to our community. We wish him the best.”
Cech was appointed three years ago to provide advice and guidance on all football and performance matters at Chelsea having played 333 times for the club.
However, according to The Telegraph, part of Cechβs decision to leave his role at Chelsea was based on how much his influence had been diluted under the new ownership.
He reportedly disagreed with Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly over his decision to loan Romelu Lukaku back to Inter prior to leaving.
Cech had acted as a go-between for Chelsea managers and director Marina Granovskaia, playing an instrumental role in a number of transfer and football decisions, notably recommending the signing of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
With Granovskaiaβs departure last week, Boehly has taken on the role of βinterim sporting directorβ, with both the American and manager Thomas Tuchel now in charge of transfer decisions with Cech sidelined. Β
Outgoing Manchester United player, Paul Pogba has agreed to join Juventus.
The French midfielder joined Manchester United in 2016 for a then record Β£80m but failed to live up to expectations after 6 years at the club marred with controversies, injuries and talks of discontentment within his camp.
Pogba is a free agent after his contract with Manchester United was allowed to run down and expires on June 30.
Sky Sport Italia say Paul Pogba will have his Juventus medical in the first week of July and his agent is set to finalize the details today Thursday June 23 .
According to Sky Sports’ Italian reporter, Gianluca Di Marzio, Pogba is expected in Turin for his tests some time between July 5 to July 8.
“Thursday is going to be decisive for the final details of the contract, as agent and lawyer Rafaela Pimenta will meet with the Bianconeri directors to write out the paperwork.”
“It seems there is only one real issue remaining, whether the contract is for four years or for three with an option to extend for a fourth.”
Pogba’s move is a return to the Allianz Juventus Stadium for the France international, who already wore the Juventus jersey from 2012 to 2016 until his transfer to Manchester United.
Bayern Munich have completed the signing of Sadio Mane from Liverpool in a deal worth up to Β£35m, ending his six-year stay on Merseyside.
The 30-year-old Senegalese striker on Wednesday, June 22,Β signedΒ a three-year contract worth Β£ 250,000 a week at the Allianz Arena,Β until 2025.
Bayern will pay Liverpool an initial Β£27.5m with a further Β£5m based on appearances, and will pay another Β£2.5m based on individual and team achievements.
Speaking for the first time as a Bayern player, Mane said: ‘I’m very happy to finally be with FC Bayern in Munich.
Β
‘We had a lot of talks and I felt the great interest of this big club from the start. So there was no doubt in my mind right from the start.
‘This is the right time for this challenge. I want to achieve a lot with this club.’
The Senegal star, who arrived at Anfield from Southampton in 2016 for Β£34m, played his last match for the Reds in the Champions League final defeat by Real Madrid.
In a farewell interview with Liverpool, Mane added: ‘Obviously it is strange β really, really strange β to no longer be a Liverpool player after six years spent at Anfield.
‘But of course I had a great time, an unbelievable time, and since my first day I really, really enjoyed training, playing, at Anfield especially and in front of these amazing supporters. Now itβs come to the end, so what can you say?
‘I think whoever is leaving Liverpool, with those supporters you will always miss them because so far [they are] the best in the world and I have always said it.
‘I would love one day to come back to Anfield to say hi to them and of course to watch Liverpool playing because for me, I am going to be Liverpoolβs No.1 fan β after the supporters!’.
When asked about the prospect of returning to Anfield in the Champions League, he said: ‘You know the Champions League and how the draw always goes on, it can happen for sure and if it happens it happens.
‘It is football and of course I have to come and I have to play. But like I said, Liverpool is Liverpool and we will see. We will see what is going to happen.’
There manyΒ NigerianΒ players that switched their international allegiance to different countries. Some is as a result of place of birth while others do it purposely. One of them isΒ Sheyi Emmanuel Adebayor. He is a Togolese professional footballer who plays as a striker. He previously played forΒ EnglishΒ clubsΒ Arsenal,Β Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace.
He represented the Togo national team at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. In 2013, he returned to the Togo team for the 2013 African Cup of Nations in South Africa, where he helped them to qualify for the quarter-finals. He is currently Togo’s all-time top goal scorer with 32 goals.
In 2008, he was voted African Footballer of the Year while playing at Arsenal. During his latter career, he became the most iconic signing in Paraguayan football and the highest paid player in the country’s history when he joined Olimpia AsunciΓ³n in 2020.
He was born in Lome to Nigerian parents who are Yoruba by tribe. He was also eligible to play for Nigeria but chose to represent the country of his birth, Togo.
President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) to immediately commence the process that will lead to elections into its executive committee at the expiration of the current administration in September.
Buhari also directed that the instrument of football administration in the country, the NFF Statutes, be amended to include other stakeholders, who had hitherto been disenfranchised or denied equal representation in the NFF congress.
In a letter addressed to NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, dated June 17, 2022 and signed by Youth and Sports Development Minister, Sunday Dare, Buhari, who reinforced the Federal Governmentβs support for football development in the country, urged the leadership of the NFF to ensure that the amended statutes reflect the national yearnings, aspirations and peculiarities of Nigeria as a sovereign nation, while aligning with the principles and objectives of football as set by the world soccer governing body, FIFA.
Meanwhile, a former chairman of the Gombe State Football Association, Alhaji Ahmed Shuaibu Gara Gombe, has appealed to interested persons eyeing the NFF presidency in the September elections to exercise restraint.
About five aspirants, comprising one administrator and former Nigeria internationals, have so far indicated an interest in the NFF top job.Β
βI think it is rather too early for such declaration to be made by anyone yet. There is the issue of statute that has not been sorted while the NFF Congress will still have to seat and draw out the electoral guidelines as well as announce the election date,β he said.
According to Gara Gombe, βWhatever anyone is doing at this time with regard to the election is hasty and it cannot amount to anything tangible at least for now.β
There are reports that the former Gombe FA chairman has been encouraged by some football stakeholders, including politicians, civil servants, diplomats, and key figures in Corporate Nigeria to declare interest in the NFF top job.
Former Real Madrid right-back, Cicinho has revealed he used to turn up for training drunk while suffering from alcoholism.
Cicinho spent two years at the Bernabeu after completing a move from Brazilian side Sao Paulo in 2005, featuring 32 times for Real and collecting a La Liga winners’ medal in 2007.
In an interview with EPTV show Ressaca, via Goal, the ex-Brazil spoke candidly about his struggle with alcoholism over the past decade. He also recalled arriving for training during his time in Madrid while intoxicated.
‘If you ask me if I’ve ever been to training drunk at Real: yes. And I drank coffee to remove the smell from my breath and bathed in perfume.’
‘Speaking of my profession, as a former professional football player, it was easy, I didn’t need money to get [drink]. People were happy to give you everything in restaurants.’
He departed for Roma that summer after falling out of favour under new boss Bernd Schuster due to his problems off the pitch. At Roma, his battle with alcoholism continued.Β
The 41-year-old admits he also attended training with Giallorossi drunk, although club officials were quicker to notice this time around.
Speaking about his time in Rome, Cicinho said: ‘Started drinking after training. I did the physiotherapy work, came home around 2 p.m., 2.30 p.m., and only stopped drinking at 4 a.m.
‘Every time I arrived at Roma drunk, the leaders saw it and that made me fall into disrepute.’
Cicinho, who spent five years with Roma before later enjoying stints in Turkey and back in Brazil, first starting drinking as a teenager and soon found himself on a slippery slope.
‘At 13 years old, when I tasted alcohol for the first time, I never stopped,’ he said.
‘I lived in the countryside, in Pradopolis, close to Ribeirao Preto, and on weekends we gathered friends and used to go out in the squares, to the clubs.
‘There was a bar nearby, because I was a minor, I tried to hide it, I asked whoever was older to buy it and I kept drinking hidden from my parents, the police.’
