Minister of youth and sports development, Sunday Dare has described the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) as a league on its deathbed.
Speaking at the ministerial briefing at the presidential villa, Abuja, on Thursday September 15, Dare noted that the league is currently in a state of disarray, with coaches, players and referees owed salaries and allowances.
He also said they’ve made efforts to speak to those in-charge but never got any response. Dare said;
βBetween May and August, we did not issue a directive because we wanted the Premier League to complete its season without any disruption.
But also, during that period, the ministry made efforts to speak with those in charge. We never got any response.βAs we sit here, our league is on its deathbed. We know the nature of our domestic league. And just yesterday (Wednesday) I got a letter from the club owners. I met with them two weeks ago. I also met with the female football leaders.
Thereβs a letter that came on September 1, I only got it yesterday stating clearly that they have numerous problems with the LMC running the league. Unpaid emoluments, referees are not paid, coaches are not paid.
βSo, in May 2022, there was a presidential directive and as a ministry, we applied reasonable judgment and delayed that communication.
But at a point when the league ended, and we saw the continuous decline of our football, we thought it was the right time to take the necessary action. And that was what we did.
Thereβs no connection between that decision with the NFF election, it stands alone.β Dare also revealed that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has received over N15 billion from the Muhammadu Buhari administration.
Former Super Eagles assistant coach, Emmanuel Amuneke has been appointed new head coach of Zambia Super League side, Zanaco FC.
According to Lusaka Times, Amuneke has agreed to the terms of the deal and is expected in the South African country in the coming days to pen his contract with the club.
Zanaco last won the MTN/FAZ Super League Division in 2016 and came second in 2021. They lost their last league match 1-0 at home on Sunday against Forest Rangers.
Amuneke led Tanzania to break the 39-year jinx after he qualified them for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, and he will be aiming to revive Zanaco who are currently struggling.
Zanaco is currently 9th on the log after winning two matches and losing two
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has inisted that he’s not ready to retire from professional football at the age of 40.
The Swedish striker turns 41 next month and had promised to bring the curtain down on his 23-year professional career after undergoing knee surgery in May.
But Ibrahimovic promised to keep playing’ after signing a one-year extension with Milan in July. Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Swede said:
‘I will be back soon. I’m not going to retire, I’m coming back and I won’t give up.’ Milan have won four and drawn two of their opening six games. They currently sit on 14 points, joint with Napoli and Atalanta.
On his retirement plan, Ibrahimovic vowed that he would eventually retire when he sees a player ‘stronger’ than himself emerge.
‘If I see a player stronger than me, I will be ready to retire. But I haven’t seen any player stronger than me yet,’ he said. ‘AC Milan have signed a top player with Charles de Ketelaere – give him some time.’
Super Eagles and Real Sociedad striker, Umar Sadiq, has been ruled out for the rest of the season after sustaining an ACL injury against Getafe on Sunday, September 11.
The striker was taken off the field after he suffered the injury.
A statement on the clubβs official website read; βSadiq Umar suffered a right knee sprain during the Getafe-RS match, held yesterday.
After the tests carried out today on the player, he has been diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in the right leg.
βHe will start physiotherapy treatment. However, he will undergo surgical treatment.β
One of Sadiqβs new teammates at Real Sociedad, Mikel Oyarzabal, is yet to return to the sideline after he suffered a similar injury during a training session back in March.
The 25-year-old, who joined Sociedad in August, has registered three goals so far this season.
Manchester United players still expect Cristiano Ronaldo to push for a move away in January.
Back in July, Ronaldo told the Premier League club that he wanted to leave after they missed out on Champions League football last season, but his request was rejected and he ended up staying at the club.
Despite scoring 24 goals last season, Ronaldo has started just one league match this term – United’s humiliating 4-0 defeat against Brentford with Erik ten Hag preferring Marcus Rashford up front instead.
However, it has been reported that United’s first-team stars think the Portuguese icon will have his sights set on an exit at the start of 2023 due to struggling to adapt to ten Hag’s style of play ‘All the players loved it when Ronaldo came back to United last season but they are frustrated he missed pre-season,’ a source told The Sun.
‘The manager put a lot of work into giving the squad detailed information about what he wanted them to do and how he wanted them to play.
‘Ronaldo is not up to speed with that and is relying on instinct when he plays. But that doesn’t work in Ten Hagβs system.
‘He often demands the ball too early in build-up play and drops deep for the ball, but that means when the ball is wide there is no-one in the middle to hit it into.
‘Itβs clear that the success they have had this season is from following tactical instruction rather than the individual brilliance they relied on last season.
‘Ronaldo is likely to find himself on the bench again going forward.’
The Premier League and the Football Association have postponed all matches this weekend following the death of Queen Elizabeth.
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) held a call with all major sports at 9.30am to determine the plan of action for the rest of this weekend’s calendar and left the decision over events up to the individual organisations.
However, the Premier League and EFL released a statement saying they had made the decision to postpone this weekend’s fixtures to honour Queen Elizabeth’s ‘extraordinary life and contribution to the nation’.
The Premier League released the following statement: ‘At a meeting, this morning [Friday], Premier League clubs paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
‘To honour her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect, this weekend’s Premier League match round will be postponed, including Monday evening’s game.’
Richard Masters, Premier League Chief Executive, added: ‘We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty’s long and unwavering service to our country.
‘As our longest-serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy following a life of dedication.
‘This is a tremendously sad time for not just the nation but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join together with all those in mourning her passing.’
According to the Daily Telegraph, there are now concerns about football taking place next week with police set to be redeployed to the Queen’s funeral in London.
Chelsea have confirmed the appointment of Graham Potter as their new head coach. Potter has signed a five-year deal and will take charge of Saturday’s trip to Fulham after agreeing to succeed Thomas Tuchel.
‘I am incredibly proud and excited to represent Chelsea FC, this fantastic football club,’ Potter said.
‘I am very excited to partner with Chelsea’s new ownership group and look forward to meeting and working with the exciting group of players and to develop a team and culture that our amazing fans can be proud of.
‘I would also like to place my sincere thanks to Brighton & Hove Albion for allowing me this opportunity and in particular Tony Bloom and all the players, staff and supporters for their continued support during my time at the club.
Potter is expected to bring a number of members of his Brighton staff with him to Stamford Bridge, including coaches Bjorn Hamberg and Billy Reid plus assistant recruitment chief Kyle Macaulay.
Potter, who will take Chelsea training for the first time tomorrow, received assurances that he will given the time to make things work at Chelsea in line with the contract that runs until 2027.
However, Tuchel’s coaching staff will continue to take charge of the team in the interim with a match against west London rivals Fulham on Saturday.
Sportsmail has revealed that Chelsea sacking Tuchel will cost the club Β£15m – with Β£13m going to the German and Β£2m to his coaching staff.
It is understood that the German was one of the Premier League’s top earners, on a salary in the region of Β£13m a year.
Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, has bagged a degree in Business Management from the Buckinghamshire New University, Wycombe, United Kingdom.
Europe-based Nigerian sports journalist, Ojora Babatunde, shared the news as he took to Twitter to celebrate the Nottingham Forest player.
Chelsea have been reportedly given permission to talk to the current head coach of Brighton & Hove Albion, Graham Potter, about becoming the new head coach of the club.
It was gathered that Potter had been reassured that if he were to take the Chelsea job, he would be permitted to try to bring the ethos and football structure that both he and the club desired.
Having turned down the chance to talk to other top clubs in recent years, Potter holds that Chelsea offers him the best opportunity to proceed with his coaching career at a world-class club.

Lagos Planning Commissioner resigns after Oniru building collapseLagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Idris Salako, has resigned.
Gbenga Omotoso, the Commissioner for Information made the announcement in a statement on Monday, September 5.
Omotoso said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has accepted the resignation. The official noted that Salakoβs exit “is a prelude to the restructuring of the Ministry and its agencies”.
Sanwo-Olu thanked him for his services and wished him success in his future endeavours.
The governor warned all players in the sector to respect the law or face the consequences of any indiscretion.
Salako leaves the position after multiple building collapses in Nigeriaβs commercial hub in the last few years. The most recent occurred in Oniru on Sunday, September 4.
A seven-storey building under construction collapsed. Two died and some are still trapped in the building.
Salako suggested the developer was a powerful man. While addressing the media, Salako recalled how the developer chased state officials away during enforcement.
He also disclosed that the developer broke the seal of the site on three separate occasions.
Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly called for Manchester United captain Harry Maguire to be dropped last season because he was “part of the problem”‘ at the club.
The Portuguese striker returned to Old Trafford last season but failed to help the club avoid a sixth-place finish in the Premier League.
Details have now emerged surrounding the Portuguese striker’s demands, from team selection to formation tweaks.
According to the Athletic, Ronaldo was part of a group of players who went up to Rangnick at Carrington in February this year. Among them were Raphael Varane and Paul Pogba but Ronaldo’s message came through clearly when he said:
‘Maguire is part of the problem.’ Rangnick is said to have told the players including Ronaldo that it was ‘inappropriate’ to speak about Maguire when the player himself was not present.
A few players from the group subsequently apologised to the interim boss, who departed the club in the summer.
Ronaldo also had a view on the team’s formation and during the impromptu meeting told the manager in no uncertain terms how he wanted them to set up.
The 37-year-old wanted to play alongside Edinson Cavani up front but his pleas fell on deaf ears.
The report helps shed light on the summer of discontent at Old Trafford – which has largely been overshadowed by Ronaldo pushing to leave.
Ironically, Maguire, who Ronaldo called to be dropped, has also been out of the team during their recent games with the striker only starting from the bench.
Barcelona forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and his family were victims of a violent robbery at his house in the Spanish city in the early hours of Monday morning, August 29.
El Pais reports that several armed men climbed into his garden at the complex in Castelldefels and threatened him with firearms and iron bars.
Aubameyang was assaulted by the men in front of his wife Alysha Behague and two children, Curtys, 11, and Pierre, six, the report claims, with the criminals escaping in a white Audi A3 after gaining access to the player’s safe.
Behague quickly alerted Spanish police, who are now searching for the culprits. The incident comes as Aubameyang is linked with a return to the Premier League after interest from Chelsea, just seven months after he left Arsenal due to disciplinary breaches.
This is not the first time Barcelona players have been victims of robberies and theft.
Aubameyang’s team-mate Robert Lewandowski had his Β£59,000 watch stolen outside the club’s training ground. The watch was snatched as the 33-year-old greeted fans ahead of an evening training session with Barca.
The thief is said to have opened Lewandowski’s car door and taken the watch as the Polish international signed autographs, before attempting to run after the thief himself.
Police quickly arrested a suspect and Lewandowski got his watch back before participating in the practice session ahead of Sunday’s LaLiga game at Real Sociedad.
A woman who claims that a Premier League footballer raped her yesterday admitted she felt ‘pressured’ by police to press charges.
She said she had not initially considered her encounter with Manchester City’s Benjamin Mendy, 28, to be rape and told officers she didn’t want to get involved in the case.
The woman, aged 22, is one of three who claim the French international raped them at a two-day pool party at his Β£4.8million mansion in Prestbury, Cheshire, last summer.
Testifying from behind a screen, she told Chester Crown Court that she was contacted by officers five months later and felt like she was ‘being dragged into the situation’ and it was the police who first called what happened to her ‘rape’.
The footballer allegedly forced himself on her during a ’20-second’ attack, which left her feeling ‘dirty and ashamed’.
She told the court: ‘I felt the word rape meant like a stranger or in an alleyway. But he was my friend and it was his house.’
She added: ‘It was not any different to what I had experienced before. I felt there was pressure on me but boys can be quite pressuring.’
She accepted that before giving her police interview she had Googled: ‘How much is Benjamin Mendy worth?’ and that she kept in touch with him on social media following the alleged rape.
She also agreed that there was a group of people, including some of the alleged victims, known as ‘the Manchester circle’ in the city’s clubs. She claimed that after Mendy’s arrest, his co-accused and alleged ‘fixer’, Louis Saha Matturie, 41, messaged her: ‘Ben’s done a lot of crazy stuff.’ Mendy denies eight counts of rape, one of attempted rape and one of sexual assault.
Saha, of Eccles, Greater Manchester, denies eight rapes and four sex assaults.
Ryan Giggs’ defence team has said said the former Manchester United footballer’s ex-girlfriend is lying about being physically assaulted, claiming her anger with the footballer turned coach lies solely on his cheating and philandering ways, which aren’t crimes.Chris Daw QC claimed that Kate Greville had told so many lies and that the ‘source of her deep, deep anger’ was Giggs’ ‘infidelity’.
PR executive Kate Greville accuses Giggs, 48, of displaying controlling or coercive behaviour towards her and also headbutting her at his home, and elbowing her sister Emma Greville on the same occasion on November 1, 2020.
Giggs denies all charges and is standing trial at Manchester Crown Court.
His barrister Daw told jurors on the 11th day of the trial on Monday, August 22 that ‘morality plays no part in a court of law’.
He said Giggs is not on trial for ‘being flirtatious’, being a ‘compulsive womaniser’, an ‘adulterer’ or a ‘liar’ or a ‘cheat’.
“He is not on trial for any of those things,”. “If they were crimes, just think how many prisons we would need.
“He accused the prosecution of ‘cherry picking’ evidence from more than 19,000 messages the couple had exchanged during their near six year relationship.
Jurors heard Giggs accepted using ‘truly appalling’ language, including when he called Ms Greville a ‘c***. ”
But he said these were not representative of their relationship completely. Daw claimed a letter entitled ‘The Final Goodbye’, which Greville shared with a friend and didn’t send on to Mr Giggs, showed she was angry about his infidelity.”Truth be told, infidelity is what this case is all about,” Daw said.
“The reason Ms Greville was upset was because of that.”He said there was no reference to ‘control’ in the letter.
“Clearly that was the source of her deep, deep anger by the time we reach October (2020),” Mr Daw said.
He told the jury Greville had told lies ‘from the outset’, including when she claimed to police on the evening of November 1 that Mr Giggs had headbutted her before.
“Members of the jury, there are so many lies that she has told,” the QC said. “So many things she has said that can’t possibly be true.”
Daw told the jurors how Ms Greville told Giggs she needed to go to the hospital because she had ‘cancerous cells’, but that she was actually having her contraceptive coil removed so she could get pregnant for Giggs for financial reasons. “She denies that that was a plan at all,” Daw said.
“You have got to decide whether you can trust or believe what she says.” He added how Ms Greville can be ‘incredibly manipulative when she wants to be’. Daw said there was ‘no evidence of Giggs controlling anything she ever did’.”She was earning good money, she was independent,” he said. “She had her friends around her.”
“This is a woman who is extremely self confident and in control.” Daw described claims of an alleged assault in a Dubai hotel in 2017 as ‘absolutely ridiculous’. Greville alleges she was ‘dragged’ naked out of the room by Mr Giggs, while he says she was bruised during ‘rough s*x’.
He dismissed her claims of Greville being a ‘slave’ to Mr Giggs and her account of lockdown being a ‘living hell’ was ‘entirely subjective’ to present a ‘false’ picture.
Speaking of the alleged headbutt in November 2020 during an incident at Mr Giggs’ home in Worsley, Daw told jurors:
“We suggest to you that it is simply utterly incredible, that there is an attack with a headbutt in the way described.
“He argued a ‘minor’ injury to her lip was not consistent with a forceful headbutt alleged.
Daw said Mr Giggs had chosen to give evidence, and described prosecutor Peter Wright QC’s cross-examination of him as being ‘almost a form of bloodsport’.
“Whatever you made of him, you may think he was in effect a rabbit in the headlights in that witness box, faced by Mr Wright,” Daw said, describing Mr Wright as ‘one of the leading prosecution barristers of the last 40 years’.
He claimed Mr Giggs ‘pretty much agreed to anything’, and said the ex-footballer was ’embarrassed to admit’ if he didn’t understand a word, or what was being asked of him.
βIt was no less a mismatch than putting Mr Wright in goal against Mr Giggs at his absolute peak of footballing ability,” Daw said.
The lawyer also made reference to the evidence of Sir Alex Ferguson, who told jurors that Giggs had ‘fantastic temperament’ when he managed him at United.
“You remember Sir Alex saying to you he used to deliberately pick on Ryan Giggs in front of the players because he knew he could,” Daw said.
“Can you imagine being picked on by Sir Alex Ferguson in his prime in front of lots of other people?”No reaction, no loss of temper.”Concluding his speech, the barrister added:
“Members of the jury, take a cold hard look at the evidence in this case, and putting everything out of your mind, the only true verdict I suggest on all three counts must be not guilty.”
The Judge, Hilary Manley will conclude all the evidence in the case on Tuesday, before the jury is sent out to deliberate on its verdicts.
Manchester City footballer, Benjamin Mendy has arrived at Chester Crown Court today for the second week of his rape trial.
The French footballer, 28, denies eight counts of rape against five women, one count of sexual assault, and one count of attempted rape.
The offences are alleged to have taken place on five different occasions at his Cheshire mansion between October 2018 and August last year.
Last week, one of his alleged victims said she was left feeling like she ‘didn’t want to be here anymore’ after allegedly being raped by Mendy.
Mendy’s co-defendant Louis Saha Matturie, 41, from Eccles, Salford, has also pleaded not guilty to eight counts of rape and four counts of sexual assault, relating to eight women.
Prosecutors allege Mendy, a French international, is a ‘predator’ who ‘turned the pursuit of women for sex into a game’.
None of the women involved can be identified and reporting restrictions apply ahead of the trial.

Eager Manchester United fans have tweaked British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Wikipedia page to incorrectly name him as owner of the club.
Ratcliffe, the billionaire owner of chemicals company Ineos, on Wednesday, August 17 announced plans to take over at Old Trafford amid calls for current owners, the Glazers, to depart.
The Glazers have faced protests from supporters ever since their arrival in 2005 over financial constraints they have placed on the club, while withdrawing millions of pounds in dividends payments for their own personal profit.
Coupled with Manchester United’s dismal start to the season, the pressure on their unpopular owners to sell the club has increased.
The club’s supporters have now taken their eagerness to another level as they have doctored the Wikipedia page of the 69-year-old.
After being tweaked by an eager fan, Ratcliffe’s occupation on Wikipedia briefly read: ‘Chairman and CEO, Owner of Manchester United’ before being swiftly deleted.
Super Falcons and Barcelona striker, Asisat Oshoala has missed out on the final three-woman shortlist for the 2022 UEFA Womenβs Player of The Year award.
Last week Oshoala was named in a 20-woman list of nominees for the 2022 Womenβs Ballon dβOr, making her the first-ever African woman to achieve the feat. UEFA has now announced Beth Mead, Lena Oberdorf and Alexia Putellas as the final three contenders for the accolade.
Oshoala, who missed about seven weeks due to injury last season, finished as the Spanish topflight leagueβs top scorer, netting 20 goals in 19 games, tied with Madrid CFFβs Geyse Ferreira.
Last month, Oshoala was named CAF Womenβs Player of The Year for a record fifth time, surpassing fellow country-woman Perpetua Nkwochaβs four awards.
Gunmen have kidnapped five grassroots female footballers and owner of Itugbe Queens football club, Precious Agbajor in Uronigbe, Orhiomwon Local Government Area of Edo State.
The victims were kidnapped at the border town between Edo and Delta State while returning from a football tournament at Owa-Alero in the Ika North-East Local Government Area of Delta State on Friday, August 12, 2022.
A source from the locality, who confirmed the incident, said that the abductors had contacted the families of the victims, demanding a sum of N5m ransom each for the victims.
“They (footballers) went to Owa-Alero to play a football match. On their way back, they were kidnapped at the Uronigbe area, the boundary between Delta and Edo states,β the source disclosed.
“The victims include Mrs Precious Agbajor, one Abraham, Nancy, Beatrice, and the driver. They are six in number that are in the kidnapperβs den. The matter has been reported to Uronigbe police station. The kidnappers have contacted the family of Agbajor and asked them to pay N5 million for his wifeβ, the source added.
Spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the kidnapping incident, adding that the abduction happened in Edo.
But his Edo State counterpart, Chidi Nwabuzor, when contacted, said from the record available at the State Command, that there was no information about the incident.
“You know, we transmit our records to Force Headquarters everyday. There is no record of that before us. From the Commandβs record, no such incident happened yesterday (Friday), so the police will not give an account of anything unreported.” said Nwabuzor.
