Chelsea FC has announced that Graham Potter has departed the club. Graham has agreed to collaborate with the Club to facilitate a smooth transition. In his time with the club, Graham has taken us to the quarter final of the Champions League, where we will face Real Madrid. Chelsea would like to thank Graham for all his efforts and contribution and wish him well for the future.

Bruno Saltor will take charge of the team as Interim Head Coach.Co-controlling owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali said:

Barcelona confirm talks to re-sign Lionel Messi from Paris Saint Germain

FC Barcelona vice president Rafa Yuste has confirmed that the club has contacted Lionel Messi about a possible return to the club this summer. The Argentine superstar famously left Barca in tears in 2021.

He then joined Paris Saint Germain as a free agent and signed a two-year contract which expires on June 30.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s deal at the Parc des Princes came with the option of an additional year that Messi has thus far been reluctant to take up.

Mundo Deportivo has reported on Friday that PSG are willing to offer Messi “more money and more years” than just the additional “plus one”.

On Thursday, French sports outlet L’Equipe reported that Messi currently takes home €3.375 million ($3.7 million) a month from the Ligue 1 giants, which puts him third behind teammates Neymar in second and leader Kylian Mbappe.

Speaking earlier today in Spain, Yustewhile holding a press conference, confirmed his club’s interest in re-signing Messi.

“Leo [Messi] and his family know the affection I have for them. I participated in the negotiations that unfortunately did not lead to a successful conclusion,” Yuste began, reminiscing about the Argentine’s exit.

“I have the thorn in my side that Leo could not continue in our club. If we are talking about La Masia and grassroots football, we are talking about Messi.

“Of course I would love for him to come back, for what it could represent at a sporting, social and economic level. We are in contact with them, yes,” Yuste confirmed.

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi laments bad Nigerian football pitches

Super Eagles and Everton midfielder, Alex Iwobi has lamented about the bad pitches the Super Eagles play on during home games, saying it has negatively affected the team.

Recall the Nigeria squad failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and, they were also beaten by Guinea-Bissau at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja last Friday in one of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

They later claimed an away victory in the return leg which was played days later in Guinea-Bissau.

Alex Iwobi, 26, has now blamed poor pitches for the team’s poor performances on home soil.

“We don’t know if we are going to have a nice pitch to play,” he said in an interview with The Beautiful Game podcast.

“Obviously, we got a new coach and we played Sierra Leone and we beat them 2-1 in a very difficult game, then we played Sao Tome and Principe and beat them 10-0 because we played on a great pitch.

A lot of us play in Europe now and we play on great pitches where it is easy to manipulate the ball around and play freely. If we had that in Nigeria it will be difficult to beat us and I am confident to say that not many teams can beat us.

“To start with, we don’t have a good pitch because if we have that I feel like we will be unstoppable. That is one thing about Nigeria and I don’t know what’s going on behind but we could play in Asaba, we could play in Lagos or Abuja.

We understand that everyone wants to see the Eagles play and Nigeria is a very big nation but at the same time, it will just be nice to have just one base where we know how it is going to be, the hotel we are going to stay and the food we eat. It just makes everything easier.”

The Everton midfielder added that they were still a young side and needed to learn. “Our team is still young and we still have a lot to learn and even as a team we are still learning about ourselves,” he added.

“One thing I can promise Nigerian fans is that as much as the talent is still there only God knows where we will be in the next few years and they just need to be patient with us because we are trying.”

Nigeria fail to qualify for U23 AFCON, lose 0-2 to Guinea

Nigeria’s Olympic Eagles on Tuesday failed to qualify for the 2023 Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations after losing 0-2 to Guinea in the second leg of their fixture in Rabat, Morocco.

The 0-2 loss in the final qualifying fixture made it a 0-2 aggregate loss after a 0-0 draw in Abuja on Wednesday.

Both teams fought hard on the turf of Prince Moulay Al Hassan for one hour before Guinea took the lead and added a second goal 15 minutes later.

Nigeria emerged as champions of the Africa Under-23 Cup of Nations in Senegal in 2015 and reached the finals in Egypt four years ago.

AFCON Qualifiers: Super Eagles secure revenge, defeat Guinea-Bissau

Barely 72 hours after the shocking one-nil defeat to Wild Dogs of Guinea-Bissau in the first-leg of the Group A 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers tie, Nigeria’s Super Eagles responded with a 1-0 win in the return leg at Bissau on Monday evening.

With an unwanted four-game winless run, Super Eagles needed a quick turnaround to appease football-loving Nigerians who are gradually running out of patience with the Jose Peseiro-led team.

Super Eagles kicked off Monday’s encounter with much dominance with the ball but it was the home team that had the first attempt at goal inside the first five minutes, with Moreto Cassama firing the ball wide.

Terem Moffi was provided with a clear opportunity to score with the net almost empty but the OGC Nice forward’s effort went wide off the post due to the rough terrain of the pitch before Moses Simon finally broke the deadlock for Nigeria with a penalty in the 30th minute.

Fenerbahce defender, Bright Osayi-Samuel, was brought down inside the 18-yard box, and the centre referee immediately gave a penalty which the Nantes forward, Simon, slotted in by sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.

In the 58th minute, Osimhen was denied by the lower post after the Napoli striker’s ball slowly went past goalkeeper Jonas Mendes and struck the bar out to safety. Had the ball gone in, it would have been Osimhen’s sixth goal of the qualifiers.

Osimhen was again denied an opportunity for another goal but this time around, it was goalkeeper Mendes who saved the forward’s attempt from close range before he pulled off another save to deny Joe Aribo two minutes later.

The game ended without another goal as Super Eagles got a sweet revenge which sent Nigeria back to the top of the Group A standings with nine points, while Guinea-Bissau are second with seven points.

Chelsea announce £121m loss

Chelsea has announced a net loss of £121.3m, which it linked to sanctions imposed on former owner Roman Abramovich by the UK government last spring.

In a statement released by new owners of the club, it was stated that the sanctions could lead to a negative financial impact for years to come because it prevented them from “entering into new contractual arrangements.”

The London-based club sold to a consortium led by new chairman Todd Boehly in late May of 2022, were unable to sell tickets or merchandise after Abramovich was sanctioned in early March.

Though Chelsea saw an overall turnover increase of £481.3m from £434.9m the previous year on account of increased matchday revenue following the return of supporters post-pandemic.In spite of the sanctions, Chelsea still saw overall turnover increase to £481.3m from £434.9m the previous year on account of increased matchday revenue following the return of supporters post-pandemic.

Commercial revenue also grew to £177.1m with the club saying it “benefited from a net increase in sponsorship revenue from new contracts and existing partner renewals.”

They invested £118m in the playing squad during 2021/22 and made a profit on player trading – with the sales of Tammy Abraham to AS Roma, Marc Guehi to Crystal Palace, Fikayo Tomori to AC Milan, and Kurt Zouma to West Ham adding up to £123.2m.

A statement released by Chelsea alongside a publication of the accounts read;

“The club was required to operate within the limitations of a special licence issued by the UK government. These restrictions were in place until the completion of the club’s sale on 30 May 2022.

“During this period, the club was restricted in a number of areas including, but not limited to, its ability to sell matchday and season tickets, sell merchandise, accept event bookings, as well as sign contracts with players and commercial sponsorship partners, which collectively resulted in extraordinary expenses and loss of revenue.

“Furthermore, some of these limitations are also expected to have an impact on the financials in the following years due to the long-term impact from restrictions on entering into new contractual arrangements.”

Morocco beat Brazil 2-1 in international friendly

Morocco continued with their brilliant performance that saw them reach the World Cup semi-finals in December 2022, beating Brazil 2-1 in a friendly game at Grand Stade de Tanger Stadium on Saturday.

Being both team’s first game after the World Cup, the Atlas Lions delivered a brilliant performance before their home fans, while the Sambo boys suffered another defeat after their humiliating exit from the World Cup.

Brazilians had a couple of clear chances early in the first half but could not convert any of them. Sofiane Boufal gave Morocco the lead 29 minutes into the game, when he made a brilliant turn in the penalty box before firing into the left corner, leaving Brazil one goal down into the first half break.

Brazil returned to the second half playing better and harder to control the game. But Morocco’s defence line proved impenetrable for the Samba Boys.

After much effort, Manchester United star Casemiro levelled for Samba Boys in the 67th minute with a curl from outside the eighteen yard box.

But again Morocco will not allow the game end in a draw.Abedelhamid Sabiri made it two for the Moroccans in the 79th minute, roofing a shot into Brazil’s net.

With Saturday’s win against five-time World Cup winner Brazil, the Moroccans made another statement that their World Cup performance last year was not a fluke.

Osimhen arrives Super Eagles camp ahead Guinea Bissau match

Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen has arrived at the team’s camp in Abuja ahead of Friday’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against the Djurtus (Wild Dogs) of Guinea Bissau.

The match will be played at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja.Eagles spokesman Babafemi Raji revealed that Osimhen, who had a flight delay in Lagos, joined the team in Abuja after Tuesday’s evening training.

Raji said the arrival of Osimhen brought the number of players in camp to 22. Portugal-based defender Zaidu Sanusi is the only player expected and will join the team on Wednesday.

The Eagles have six points from two matches as they confront Guinea Bissau in a top-of-the-table fixture. They are favoured to qualify for the competition slated for Cote d’Ivoire early next year.

Meanwhile, tickets for the encounter have been calibrated in price ranges of N2,000 and N10,000 for ordinary and VIP seats, respectively.

Ademola Olajire, communication director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), said the tickets are available at the football secretariat at the Package B of Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

Olajire said tickets are also available at the Old Parade Ground, NFF’s former office at Wuse Zone 7 and other designated places, which details will be announced on broadcast stations nationwide.

Egyptian referee Mahmoud Elbana will be in the centre, with his compatriots Youssef Elbosaty, Sami Halhal and Ahmed El-Ghandour as first assistant referee, second assistant referee and fourth official, respectively.

Prosper Harrison Addo from Ghana will be the match commissioner, and his compatriot Kotey Alexander will be the referee assessor.

Emmanuel Adebayor retires from football aged 39

Togolese footballer, Emmanuel Adebayor has called time on his professional football career. Adebayor spent over a decade in England playing for Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham and Crystal Palace but has now called time on his career.

The forward won the African Footballer of the Year award in 2008 during his time at Arsenal.He was also named Togo’s Footballer of the Year for five consecutive years between 2005 and 2009.

Adebayor spent most of his peak years in England, but also enjoyed spells in France with Metz and Monaco at the start of his career, and had a brief stint at Spanish giants Real Madrid in 2011.

After moving back to England following his time in Madrid, Adebayor had three years at Tottenham and six months at Palace before moving to Turkey to join Istanbul Basaksehir at the start of 2017.

He would go on to play for fellow Turkish outfit Kayserispor, prior to trying his luck in Paraguay with Olimpia.

He finished his career back in his homeland at Semassi, and is now walking away from the sport after over two decades as a professional.

Seyi Vibez who is currently making a wave in the industry with his Afro-pop shared the news of her death with a blank picture on his Instagram page.

Vincent Enyeama named Greatest African Goalkeeper Of All Time

Former Nigeria international footballer Vincent Enyeama has been named the greatest African goalkeeper of all time.

Enyeama was named Africa’s all time best by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS).

The all time goalkeeper ranking was decided from 1987 to 2022.

The IFFHS released the list of greatest goalkeepers in each FIFA federations with Enyeama selected from CAF.

Enyeama represented Nigeria at three FIFA World Cups in Korea/Japan 2002, South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014.

He featured in all the Super Eagles’ matches as they became African champions at the 2013 AFCON in South Africa.

Enyeama also won back-to-back CAF Champions League titles in 2003 and 2004.Italy’s 2006 World Cup winner Gianluigi Buffon was named the greatest goalkeeper from Europe and of all time.

Jose Luis Chilavert of Paraguay was picked as South America’s greatest, Mohamed Abdullaziz Al-Deayea of Saudi Arabia was selected for Asia, former Real Madrid and Costa Rica shot stopper Keylor Navas won in CONCACAF.

The IFFHS was founded in 1984 by Alfredo Pöge in Leipzig.

It has no official relationship with FIFA, but the world football governing body has cited awards and records conducted by IFFHS on it’s website.

Former Super Falcons coach Mabo dies at 80

Ismaila Mabo, a former coach of the Super Falcons, has died at the age of 80. His death was announced today, March 13, by his younger brother and a former Golden Eaglets star player, Salisu Nakande Mamuwa.

Mamuwa wrote:

“Inna lillahi wa Inna ilaihir raji’un , i just lost my elder brother these morning, Coach Mabo Ismaila, former Chief Coach of Super Falcons of Nigeria, may Aljanna Firdausi b his final abode, Ameen thumma Ameen.” His funeral rites will hold today in Jos, Plateau State.

Ismaila was the head coach of the senior women’s national team at the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup, 2000 Summer Olympics and 2004 Summer Olympics.

He led Nigeria to the quarter-finals of the World Cup, the team’s best ever result.

Cristiano Ronaldo suffered his first Saudi Pro League defeat on Thursday as Al Ittihad claimed a 1-0 win to replace Al Nassr at the top of the table.

Al Nassr had not lost any of their five league games since Ronaldo’s debut on February 3, drawing his first match before racking up four successive wins.But that run ended against their title rivals at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah.

“We are disappointed because we did not deserve to lose,” he said. Al Ittihad scored a goal the way they like, on the counter-attack. The league is still long. PSG and Argentina football icon Lionel Messi has been named the 2022 Best FIFA Men’s Player ahead of his club’s teammate Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid star Karim Benzema at an event held in Paris, France, on Monday night.

Messi played an essential role as Argentina national team won the FIFA World Cup in Qatar last year, scoring seven goals to help the South American nation win its first world title in almost four decades and his first World Cup title to crown his achievements in football.

It would be the second time the former Barcelona star would win the coveted honour after clinching the award in 2019, now tied with long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo with two FIFA Best Awards each.

Barcelona midfielder and Spain international Alexia Putellas was voted The Best FIFA Men’s Player ahead of Arsenal forward and England international Beth Mead and San Diego Wave and the United States Women’s National Team’s Alex Morgan.

She was an important player in the Barcelona Femení’s squad as they won the UEFA Women’s Champions League, Spain Women’s Primera División and the Supercopa de España Femenina last season.

Man United Women’s and England goalkeeper Mary Earps won the FIFA Best women’s goalkeeper thanks to her triumph with the Three Lionesses at the Women’s European Championship last year, while Argentina FIFA World Cup hero Emiliano Martinez won the men’s category.

Polish amputee footballer Marcin Oleksy won the Puskas Award for his overhead kick goal for Warta Poznań against Stal Rzeszów ahead of Richarlison, Dimitri Payet. He made history by becoming the first amputee to win the honour.

Three Lionesses head coach Sarina Weigman won the FIFA’s Best Women’s coach award after leading the England national team to their first-ever European title at the 2020 Women’s European championship; the Dutch have now won the prestigious honour for the third time in her managerial career.

Argentina national team manager Lionel Scaloni was voted the ‘The Best FIFA Men’s Coach’ for 2022 after guiding the La Albiceleste to their first World Cup title in 36 years at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar in which they defeated France in the final on penalties to clinch the most prestigious trophy in football.

Georgian footballer Luka Lochoshvili claimed the Fair Play Award – for saving the life of an opponent from swallowing his tongue, while the Best FIFA Award for 2022 went to the Argentina fans.

Arsenal beat Aston Villa to reclaim EPL top spot

Arsenal defeated Aston Villa 4-2 on Saturday in the English Premier League to go top of the league.

The Gunners were displaced from the top spot by Manchester City on goal difference after last week’s defeat to The Citizens at the Emirates.

Arsenal, however, returned to the top spot, snatching a crucial win in the late minute at Villa Park after coming from behind twice.

It took the home side just five minutes to shake the Gunners’ net, courtesy of Ollie Watkins.

But Bukayo Saka levelled up for the Gunners in the 16th minute as they settled into the game better.

Philip Coutinho restored Villa’s lead a few minutes to the first half break, leaving the Gunners one goal behind into the second half.

Mikel Arteta’s boys outplayed Villa in the second half to secure a dramatic win.Oleksandr Zinchenko pulled another equaliser for the Gunners in the 61st minute, scoring his first EPL goal for Arsenal since he moved to the Emirates from City.

Emiliano Martinez’s own goal in the storage time gave Arsenal a crucial win , as Gabriel Martinelli ran with the ball into an empty net as Martinez joined his players hunting for an equaliser for Villa from a corner kick.

Arsenal are now three points ahead of City on the log with 54 points in 23 games.

Ghanaian footballer, Christian Atsu found dead after going missing in Turkey earthquake

Former Chelsea and Newcastle United forward, Christian Atsu has been found dead after he went missing for days after the earthquakes in Turkey.

The Ghanaian footballer, who played for Hatayspor before his tragic death was one of the star players from the Chelsea academy before heading to Turkey.

The 31-year-old was residing in an apartment in Hatay city which suffered huge damages during the quake.

His club Hatayspor initially reported he was rescued “with injuries” but a day later that position changed. The news of his death was confirmed by his agent in Turkey, Murat Uzunmehmet.

“Christian Atsu was found and had unfortunately passed away,” he said through a brief statement on social media.

Atsu was staying in a building with a number of Hatayspor team-mates and officials. The club’s sporting director Taner Savut is also missing.

Atsu scored late in injury time to give Hatayspor a 1-0 win over Istanblul-based Kasimpaşa S.K. in the Turkish league on Feb. 5, earning him praise from his new club hours before the earthquake struck.

Some survivors are still being rescued after the quakes and aftershocks in southern Turkey and northern Syria that are known to have killed more than 40,000 people.

Atsu who previously played for English clubs Chelsea and Newcastle, signed for Hatayspor late last year.

The club is based in Antakya, near the epicenter of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck in the early hours of Feb. 6, one of two major earthquakes, along with ensuing aftershocks that devastated southern Turkey and northern Syria.

Senegal defeat Algeria to win CHAN; now holder of AFCON, BSAFCON titles

Senegal are champions of the 2023 CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament, edging host nation Algeria 5-4 on penalties in a tightly contested final on Saturday night in the North African country.

The competition, initially marred by controversy after Morocco national team were denied entry into the country due to long-standing diplomatic rift, began on January 13 and ended yesterday at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Baraki Algiers in Algeria.

Algeria were the favourites coming into the final, thanks to a massive home support and given they have the best record from the group stage all through to the final. They were undefeated in the previous rounds while Senegal lost a game to Uganda in the group stage.

But those advantages were not enough to derail the Senegalese contingent from claiming honour inside the enemy’s territory.

Amid huge support from the thousands of Algerians in the stands and roughly 200 times more than their Senegalese counterparts, who were less than 300, both the regulation and extra time ended in a goalless draw as the game went into penalties.

The Lions of Teranga came out 5-4 victorious after penalties shootout to become the first West African country to lift the biennial football showpiece for African players plying trade in their home country’s national leagues.

Senegal are now the holder of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) which they won last year in Cameroon, the CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations (BSAFCON), a record seventh title also won last year in Mozambique and now CHAN.

Man United forward Mason Greenwood cleared of rape, assault charges

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood have been cleared of all criminal charges one year after he was charged with rape, assault and using coercive behaviour, authorities in UK announced.

His trial was initially scheduled to begin in November this year but the withdrawal of key witnesses and the emergence of new evidence abruptly changed the direction of the situation.

Greenwood was arrested in January last year by the Greater Manchester Police and charged with one count of attempted rape, a count sexual assault and repeatedly engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour following a series of clips of the incident posted on social media by his alleged ex girlfriend.

Immediately after the arrest, the England international was released on bail and had remained suspended from the first team squad by Manchester United pending the outcome of the legal proceedings.

He was rearrested in November 2022 for breaking his bail conditions before he was released on bail again.

In a surprising twist on Thursday afternoon, the Crown Prosecution Service announced that “the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction.”

The CPS added:

“In these circumstances, we are under a duty to stop the case. We have explained our decision to all parties. We would always encourage any potential victims to come forward and report to police and we will prosecute wherever our legal test is met.”

Meanwhile, the club is yet to release a statement about the latest development as speculation continues to build up about the future of the youngster, currently on a £75,000-a-week wage in a contract that runs until summer of 2025.

France defender Varane announces retirement

France and Manchester United defender Raphaël Varane has announced his retirement from international football to focus on club duties.

Varane last game for France, the team he was the vice captain before his retirement, came in the final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

“Representing our great country for a decade has been one of the greatest honors of my life. Every time I wore this very special blue jersey I felt immense pride,” the 29-year-old said in a statement on Thursday afternoon.

He continued:

“The duty to give it all, play my heart out and win every time we put on the field. I’ve been contemplating this for several months and deciding it’s the right time for me to retire internationally.”

The former Real Madrid star made his debut for the France national team in the Les Bleus’ 3-1 World Cup qualifier victory over Georgia in 2013 and went on to earn 93 appearances for his country.

He played a pivotal role as France won their second-ever global triumph at the FIFA World Cup in Russia almost five years ago and was also part of the squad that almost defended France’s World Cup triumph in Qatar last year.

Unfortunately, the two-time World Cup champions lost in the final to Argentina on penalties after both the regulation and extra time ended in a dramatic 3-3 draw.

During his ten years stint with Les Bleus, Varane also won the UEFA Nations League, a feat France achieved in the final against Spain that took place in Italy in 2021.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr coach has claimed the forward will ‘go back to Europe’ before retiring from football.

The superstar player only secured a move to the Saudi Arabian side last month in a big money deal.

Now his own coach Rudi Garcia has suggested that the five-time Ballon d’or winner will have one final stint in Europe before hanging up his boots.

According to SPORT, Al-Nassr head coach Garcia said: ‘Cristiano Ronaldo is a positive addition as he helps disperse defenders.

The 58-year-old manager added: ‘He’s [Ronaldo] one of the best players in the world. He won’t finish his career at Al-Nassr, he’ll go back to Europe.’

Garcia disclosed this after the side’s 3-1 defeat to Al Ittihad in the semi-finals of the Arabian Super Cup, where Ronaldo failed to get on the scoresheet.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star is yet to score for the club in the Saudi Pro League, having featured in one competitive fixture.
