Legendary actor Val Kilmer dies at 65

Prolific American actor Val Kilmer, who was propelled to fame with “Top Gun” and went on to starring roles as Batman and Jim Morrison, has died at age 65, the New York Times reported Tuesday.

The cause of death was pneumonia, his daughter Mercedes Kilmer told the Times. He had battled throat cancer following a 2014 diagnosis, but later recovered, she said.

AFP has reached out to his representatives for comment.

Originally a stage actor, Kilmer burst onto the big screen full of charisma, cast as a rock star in Cold War spoof “Top Secret!” in 1984.

Two years later, he gained fame as the cocky, if mostly silent fighter pilot in training Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in box office smash hit “Top Gun,” playing a rival to Tom Cruise’s “Maverick.”

A versatile character actor whose career spanned decades, Kilmer toggled between blockbusters and smaller-budget independent films. He got a shot at leading man status in Oliver Stone’s “The Doors,” depicting Jim Morrison’s journey from a psychedelics-loving LA film student to 60s rock frontman.

After a cameo in Quentin Tarantino-written “True Romance,” Kilmer went on to star alongside Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in “Heat” and took a turn as the masked Gotham vigilante in “Batman Forever,” between the Bruce Wayne portrayals by Michael Keaton and George Clooney.

A 1996 Entertainment Weekly cover story dubbed Kilmer “The Man Hollywood Loves to Hate,” depicting him as a sometimes surly eccentric with exasperating work habits.

A New York Times interviewer in 2002 said Kilmer “hardly lives up to that reputation” and found the actor instead “friendly, buoyant and so open that he often volunteers personal details about his life and is quick to laugh at himself.”

“You have to learn to speak Val,” director D. J. Caruso told the newspaper.

– ‘ Magical life’ –

Born Val Edward Kilmer on New Year’s Eve 1959, he began acting in commercials as a child.

Kilmer was the youngest person ever accepted to the drama department at New York’s fabled Juilliard school, and made his Broadway debut in 1983 alongside Sean Penn and Kevin Bacon.

In Hollywood, the Los Angeles native longed to make serious films but found himself in a series of schlocky blockbusters and expensive flops in the early 2000s.

Chastened by a decade or more of low-budget movies, he was mounting a comeback in the 2010s with a successful stage show about Mark Twain that he hoped to turn into a film when he was struck by cancer.

“Val,” an intimate documentary about Kilmer’s stratospheric rise and later fall in Hollywood, premiered at the Cannes film Festival in 2021 and showed him struggling for air after a tracheotomy.

Kilmer “has the aura of a man who was dealt his cosmic comeuppance and came through it,” US publication Variety wrote of the film. “He fell from stardom, maybe from grace, but he did it his way.”

When he reprised his role as “Iceman” in the long-awaited sequel “Top Gun: Maverick,” Kilmer’s real-life health issues, and rasp of voice, were written into the character.

“Instead of treating Kilmer — and, indeed, the entire notion of Top Gun — as a throwaway nostalgia object, he’s given a celluloid swan song that’ll stand the test of time,” GQ wrote.

On his website, Kilmer said he had led a “magical life.”

“For more than half a century, I have been honing my art, no matter the medium. Be it literature, movies, poetry, painting, music, or tracking exotic and beautiful wildlife,” he wrote.

According to the Times, he is survived by two children, Mercedes and Jack Kilmer

The actor recognised the significance of his fans’ support, stressing that every view, share and comment made a difference.

Drake is a million times better than Kendrick Lamar – Kanye West

American rapper Kanye West has stated that Drake is vastly superior to Kendrick Lamar in terms of relevance and impact on hip-hop culture.

In a recent interview with DJ Akademiks, West asserted that despite Lamar’s apparent victory in the hip-hop beef between the two in the U.S., Drake’s influence on the global music scene is unparalleled.

He drew comparisons between Drake’s cultural significance and that of Future and Young Thug.

According to West: “One thing is, Drake is a million times better than Kendrick [Lamar] and a million times more important [to the hip-hop world]. What Future and [Young] Thug have done is what Drake culturally is. That sh*t was insane, bro. It’s universal”.

The Canadian rapper Drake and the American rapper Kendrick Lamar have been involved in a rap feud since 2013, when Drake responded to Lamar’s verse on the Big Sean song “Control”.

It escalated in 2024 with Lamar’s lyrics in the song “Like That”.

The two began on favorable terms in 2011 but on August 14, 2013, Lamar dissed Drake, among many rappers, on “Control”, but claimed his verse was “friendly competition”.

Over the next decade, the two denied speculation that they had dissed each other on various songs.

In 2023, on rapper J. Cole and Drake’s song “First Person Shooter”, Cole claimed that he, Drake, and Lamar were the “big three” of modern hip-hop; on “Like That” in March 2024, Lamar rejected the notion of a big three, saying the top spot in hip hop was “just big me”.

On May 4, on “Not Like Us”, Lamar accused Drake of pedophilia. On May 5, Drake released “The Heart Part 6”, which denied Lamar’s accusations and claimed Drake’s team fed Lamar false information about a second child. In January 2025, Drake filed a petition against and then sued Universal Music Group (UMG), his and Lamar’s record label in the Southern District Court of New York, for releasing “Not Like Us”, alleging that the song was defamatory and that it was promoted by UMG with illegal tactics.

In 2025, Drake reflected on the feud on “Fighting Irish Freestyle”; and Lamar won five Grammy Awards for “Not Like Us”, performing it and “Euphoria” at Super Bowl LIX.

She stated that being at the top is what makes one a topic of conversation.

The actress also revealed that her family opposed her remarriage due to her age but she stood firm, knowing what she wanted.

Aigbe expressed her love for marriage and having a partner, saying she’s the type of person who loves to have a “crown” (husband) on her head.

“I love love, actually. What you said now, a lot of people do ask me, even some family members. They would be like, I’m close to 50 years old; what am I looking for? But I believe everybody knows what they want.

“What you want might be different from mine. I know what I saw, and I know what I wanted. I am the kind of person who loves to have a crown (husband) on my head and loves to be married.

“Maybe, if I’m still in my baby’s daddy’s house, I wouldn’t be known as Mercy Aigbe. Definitely people will talk when you do something good. If you are not known, you can’t be the topic. When I was young, I never thought my life would turn out this way,” she said.

Kazim Adeoti, popularly known as Adekaz, has been a behind-the-scenes figure in the entertainment industry for years.

However, his marriage to Mercy Aigbe in 2022 thrust him into the spotlight.

Despite the controversy surrounding their union, with many criticising Kazim’s involvement with Mercy as the reason for his first marriage’s demise, the couple has remained strong.

They continue to defy critics and publicly display their love for each other.

Lady Gaga sued over ‘logo theft’ for ‘Mayhem’ album cover

Popular American singer Lady Gaga is facing a lawsuit from surfboard company Lost International, which accuses her of copying its Mayhem logo for her new album.

Lost International, which has been selling merchandise with the Mayhem brand for over a decade, claims that Gaga’s album design looks almost identical to its own logo.

According to court documents, Lost International says it contacted Gaga—whose real name is Stefani Germanotta—about the issue before the album was released. However, the company alleges that she ignored their concerns and continued using the logo.

The lawsuit, filed in a U.S. court, demands that Gaga stop using the logo and pay damages, including any profits made from it.

“The way she styled the word ‘Mayhem’ is nearly identical to ours,” the company stated in its filing.

The firm claims to have copyrighted its version of the logo since 2015 and has provided side-by-side images of its products and Gaga’s album design as evidence.

Gaga’s Mayhem album, released on March 7, has been a major success, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and topping charts in 21 countries.

The album features popular singles like “Disease” and “Abracadabra”, along with her Grammy-winning duet with Bruno Mars, “Die With A Smile”.

Music critics have praised the album, calling it a “return to dance-floor Gaga.” She is set to headline Coachella next month and will embark on a concert tour to promote the album.

In a recent interview on Beat FM, Zlatan expressed frustration with those who spend their days online, jumping from one celebrity’s page to another, asking for money.

He shared an experience where he tried to help someone in need, but disqualified a woman who had previously trolled him.

He said: “I don’t mean to be petty but I know how people move on the internet. It’s like these people are just there from morning till night and they are under your activities wanting giveaways. I can’t talk too much sha before they remind me that I was once there.

“One particular day I was wondering how to help but I didn’t want to give random people money . So I went through people tweeting about their jobs and if I see that you say you’re a tailor but there’s nothing on your page about it, you must have posted about your services.
