Nigerian international fraudster, Obinwanne Okeke, popularly known as Invictus, will be sentenced on Tuesday, February 16, by a US court for carrying out multi-million-dollar scam running into millions of dollars.
The 33-year-old Okeke who was once listed on the Forbes Africa 30 Under 30 and described as an inspiration to many Nigerian youths before he was exposed, is said to have defrauded American citizens through fraudulent wire transfer instructions in a massive, coordinated, business e-mail compromise scheme.
He will be sentenced by a Virginia Court and faces a maximum of 20 years in prison if he is convicted
Okeke was arrested on August 6, 2019, by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), after an intensive investigation that spanned over two years. Though he initially pleaded not guilty, he later changed his stance and pleaded guilty to two charges of Internet fraud in the US that caused $11m losses to his victims.
Before his exposure and subsequent arrest, Okeke who was the CEO of Invictus Group, was a big player who had investments in oil and gas, agriculture, private equity, alternative energy, telecom and real estate, with presence in three countries including Nigeria, South Africa and Zambia.
In December 2020, a Federal High Court in Lagos ordered the permanent forfeiture of N235,451,969 found in his bank account.
Germany police hit with Jerusalema dance bill. Germany’s most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia, says it has had to pay fees to Warner Music after several of its police forces took part in a viral dance challenge.
The song Jerusalema by South Africa’s Master KG spread online last year after groups around the world choreographed it to spread happiness in the time of the pandemic.
The official video has more than 330 million views on YouTube:
The penalty to North Rhine-Westphalia, which has not been revealed, has seen some local fire services deleting their videos or cancelling plans to make one, AFP news agency reports quoting Germany’s national news agency.
The move by Warner has sparked sharp criticism on their Facebook page on Monday, with many users accusing the label of “shabby behaviour”.
But the music label has defended its action, “We love the fact that the fans are getting behind ‘Jerusalema’. But if organisations in Germany use the song to promote themselves, we think they should secure a dubbing licence,” a Warner spokesman told Focus.
“In these difficult times, it is more important than ever that artists and performers are paid for their music when it is used by third parties to enhance their reputation,” the spokesman said.

A Briton has pleaded guilty to breaking Singapore’s quarantine rules by leaving his hotel room to visit his fiancée.
Nigel Skea, 52, walked up an emergency staircase to spend the night with Agatha Maghesh Eyamalai, 39, in September. The couple are now married.
Eyamalai admitted aiding him. Breaking the rules could bring six months in jail, but the prosecutor has sought a lesser period and fines.
Singapore requires people to spend 14 days in a hotel upon arrival.
In a district court on Monday, Skea pleaded guilty to one charge of contravening a control order and one of failing to wear a face mask.
Eyamalai admitted a single charge of conspiring to contravene a control order.
Court documents said Skea had left his room three times.
Eyamalai had booked a room in the Ritz Carlton Millenia Singapore Hotel, where he was quarantined.
ANALYSIS OF THE PUNISHMENT
Nigel Skea and his now wife were both dressed casually for their court appearance, but as the facts of the case were read out, anxiety became visible on their faces – even behind their face masks.
“Guilty,” they both said meekly, when asked for their pleas.
The prosecution proposed that Skea be jailed for four weeks and fined S$750 ($567; £408) to act as a “deterrent” to others who might consider doing the same.
The offence was clearly premeditated, the prosecution said, adding that by spending nine hours together the couple had posed a risk to society. The fact that Skea was not wearing a mask when he left his room was mentioned several times.
The couple’s lawyer admitted that both had committed “mischief”, but said that this was due to a “foolish love” for each other, and the result of a long separation. He asked for a fine and a one-week jail term for Skea “to give him a slap on a wrist”.
While Singapore’s hotel quarantine system has been an effective defence against Covid-19, the government has also been clear that it will deal firmly with anyone found breaking the rules. The way the courts deal with these kinds of offences will be watched very closely indeed.
The court heard that Skea walked up 13 flights of stairs to spend the night with his fiancée, who opened an emergency exit door for him. They spent nine hours together.
Skea, from Southampton, had also been caught “loitering in the corridor” twice, according to the charges.
Sentencing is expected to take place next week.
“This is a classic tale of two lovers wanting to be together and trying to be as close as possible to each other, but breaching the law,” the couple’s lawyer S.S. Dhillon told the court.
Singapore has been been one of the most successful countries in tackling the pandemic. Despite a big outbreak among its foreign workers early on, local infection rates have for months been low.
A Nigerian, Mike Nwankwo, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a High Court in Tanzania, after he was found guilty of drug trafficking.
Nwankwo, who claimed to be a businessman dealing in used clothes in Abuja, was arrested with his Tanzanian girlfriend, Mastura Makongoro, on February 12, 2014, at the Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA), when a search on them revealed they had 5,126 grams of heroin they were transporting to Freetown, Sierra Leone.
However, the presiding judge, Justice Mohamed Gwae, who heard the case, acquitted Makongoro, due to lack of evidence against her.
The verdict against Nwankwo and his girlfriend was handed down on Friday where Judge Gwae said the testimony of nine witnesses to the prosecution and 18 exhibits, “confirmed the indictment against the Nigerian citizen beyond any reasonable doubt.”
The prosecution in the case was led by state advocates from the National Prosecution Service (NPS), Ignas Mwinuka, while Nwankwo was represented by advocate Diana Solomoni.
During the sentencing, the court heard that Makongoro had asked Nwankwo for the sum of Sh15 million for the construction of a house, and the latter replied that he would find her a job that would provide her with the money.
Nwankwo then assigned Makongoro to transport a bag containing the drugs to Sierra Leone.
On the day of their arrest, the Nigerian was said to have escorted his girlfriend to KIA where she entered and underwent inspections and was given a boarding pass by Ethiopian Airline.
Upon completion, Makongoro who was a student at Bandari College, went to sit in the waiting room and her bag was sent to an Xray machine for inspection.
However, security officers became suspicious and called the accused to reduce some of her belongings. It was still heavier than the allowable luggage weight and the officers suspected something was hidden.
Police officers decided to tear up the bag and came across four envelopes that contained the drugs and in an initial questioning, the accused claimed the bag had been given to her by her boyfriend.
The suspect was taken to the KIA Police Station, and while she was being held there, Nwankwo returned to the scene searching for his girlfriend after he suspected something was wrong.
While at the scene, the police suspected that he was the one mentioned as the bag owner and arrested him.
Judge Gwae said he acquitted Makongoro because in the way the drugs were stored in the bag, she would not have been aware that there was anything extra in the bag.
Telling lies is one of the major vices we have in our society today, with children, youths and adults are not left out. Telling lies has become a norm, which we as humans have accustomed ourselves to. We pay deaf ears to the Bible verse which says “The Truth shall set you free at all times” and most often we use lies to cover up previous lies and it gets to a point where you can no longer lie. We need men and women in our society who will speak up against this issue of telling lies in our society and one man who has distinguished himself because of preaching against lies is 72-years-old Evangelist Ismail Badmus.
Evangelist Ismail Badmus became popular when a video of him saying “Lori Iro” went viral on the internet. “Lori Iro” is a Yoruba phrase for “Lies”, as he preached against the common lies which are spread by many in the society, making reference to some lies that men tell ladies when they are in a relationship.
In a video posted by BBC NEWS PIDGIN, Evangelist Ismail Badmus was interviewed about his viral “Lori Iro” video. He said that he was not aware that someone was recording him while he was preaching and cannot remember the exact place and time he was recorded. He spoke on his inspiration of “Lori Iro”, saying he was inspired by his early life experiences, the Bible, human daily activities, which are full of lies. He revealed that many people usually make fun of him, calling him all sorts of names, but he is not bothered because it was a work which God Almighty called him to do.
He said that despite his age, he still evangelizes on a frequent basis, because he derives joy in doing it and that is what have kept him alive and healthy. Speaking about his early life, Evangelist Ismail Badmus revealed that he was born into a Muslim family, but along the line he changed religion, as he converted to Christianity. His conversion to Christianity angered his brothers and sisters, who has decided not to speak with him for a very long time. He said that his siblings usually make jest of him, calling him names such as “Baba Lie Lie”.
He said that the viral video of his preaching is meant to draw us to the awareness that the issue of lying, is a very serious and important matter and should not be taken for granted. He admitted that lying is a issue that thrives among both young and old, Christians and Muslims and everybody in general.
He expressed anger in the fact that several persons have attempted to impersonate him, using bank to dupe people.

The Occupy Lekki protest was met with fierce resistance in the form of armed policemen as they clamped down on the protesters during the early hours of the day.
They arrested a popular comedian, Mr Macaroni who was on ‘Instagram Live’ as people watched how he was locked up in a police van alongside other persons. He was also a mouthpiece during the EndSars protest and stood firm throughout the protest.
Many people were tagging him with some undesirable names, someone said he was looking for cheap popularity while others stood by him and said he will be remembered for his stance against the government.
A Twitter user named Toby who was saddened by the events wrote on how Mr Macaroni has been a person with a good heart since their secondary school days.
In his words; “Being in the same hostel as @mrmacaronii 2008-09, seeing him stay up till 3am washing 70m of gutters so juniors wouldn’t get punished, removing his socks to give to someone who didn’t have any so they could avoid being punished always baffled me.”
He followed that up by saying he was really sad after seeing him in a police van for trying to protest peacefully.
This is someone who knew him personally and it’s synonymous with almost everyone when you feel sad because you see people whom you know genuinely care for others go through some pains
Without sentiments, do you think Mr Macaroni was searching for cheap popularity?
“A special sunrise, on this precious day, a great woman was born. During my hard times when depression would have taken the better part of me, you were my bedrock. When it was like the whole world was against me, you stood by me, even took some missiles because of me.
When I thought I lost it all, you encouraged me to hope on God that he will give me back all I have lost. Happy birthday Mrs Churchill. Age with grace, I have got your back 247 by the special grace of God.”
Rosy Meurer then replied:
“Aww thank you so much. I appreciate you always. We thank God and I’ve never doubted you”

It is a very bad thing to allow your anger to take over you. Anger spoils things, it destroys things, it is very dangerous, please don’t allow your anger take over you.

Manchester City powered seven points clear at the top of the Premier League as Ilkay Gundogan’s double inspired a 3-0 win that piled pressure on Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho, while Liverpool’s problems mounted after a dismal 3-1 defeat at Leicester on Saturday. Pep Guardiola’s side stretched their English top-flight record run to 16 successive victories in all competitions. They are unbeaten in their last 23 matches and look odds on to win the title for the third time in the last four seasons.
Manchester United can close the gap to five points if they beat lowly West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, but City will still hold a game in hand to strengthen their grip on top spot. Tottenham were no match for the red-hot leaders on a freezing evening at the Etihad Stadium. The latest clash between old rivals Guardiola and Mourinho was a mismatch from the moment Rodri put City ahead. Gundogan has been the main man during City’s winning streak and he finished off Tottenham with two ruthless strikes. Since City last lost — at Tottenham in November — they have climbed from 13th place and overturned an eight-point gap to Mourinho’s men, who were top at the time.
In stark contrast, Tottenham have now lost five of their previous six matches in all competitions. Amid Mourinho’s awkward rifts with Gareth Bale, who came on as a late substitute, and Dele Alli, there is a growing feeling Tottenham’s season is spiralling out of control. They are languishing in eighth place, four points adrift of the top four.
Tottenham nearly took the lead in the 15th minute when Harry Kane hit the post with a superb free-kick that curled round the City wall from 25 yards. But it was City who went ahead in the 23rd minute after Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg tripped Gundogan with a trailing leg. After Gundogan made it three penalty misses for City this season in their thrashing of Liverpool last weekend, Guardiola had hinted Ederson might take their next one.
City’s keeper did start moving towards the Tottenham area for a moment after the challenge on Gundogan, but he was sent back and instead Rodri stepped up to drive the spot-kick past Hugo Lloris. Their killer second goal duly arrived with a flourish five minutes after half-time. Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden combined in a blur of quick passes to carve open the Tottenham defence.
Gundogan applied the finishing touch as his close-range finish eluded Lloris’s weak attempted save. The in-form German midfielder wasn’t finished yet and in the 66th minute he sprinted onto Ederson’s long kick, gave Davinson Sanchez a subtle nudge and swivelled away from the stumbling defender before firing past Lloris. Gundogan’s 11th goal in his last 12 league games came with a frustrating coda however as he limped off injured soon after.
Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp admitted his side’s slim chances of retaining their English Premier League (EPL) title are over after they were beaten 1-3 at Leicester City on Saturday.
Three goals in seven minutes from James Maddison, Jamie Vardy and Harvey Barnes overturned Mo Salah’s opener; as Liverpool suffered their third straight defeat. The result put Leicester up to second, four points behind Manchester City, who beat Tottenham later on Saturday to stretch their lead to seven points with a game in hand. Liverpool are fourth, 13 points off the pace and short on confidence.
“I can’t believe (the question), but yes,”Klopp said, when asked if the title chase was over. “I don’t think we can close that gap this year. “We are not worrying or whatever about the title, we are not silly. We have on Tuesday a tough game (away to RB Leipzig in the Champions League)… Then on Saturday again, a derby.
‘‘So, these are the things we are thinking about. We want to have still a good season in the end, we have to win.” Liverpool gave Ozan Kabak a debut at centre-back and they were much improved for the first hour, with a number of chances to score.
And when Salah placed a superb shot into the far corner on 67 minutes after nifty footwork from Roberto Firmino, it looked like they would win it. But after Thiago gave away a free-kick on the edge of the area; eventually confirmed by video review (VAR) —- Maddison fired the free-kick into the net.
The goal was given by VAR after it was initially ruled out for offside against Daniel Amartey. For the second match in succession; Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson then made a massive mistake in a mix-up with Kabak; allowing Vardy to run in on an empty goal. Barnes finished things off with a clinical third goal, leaving Liverpool with a third straight Premier League defeat.
Liverpool full back Andy Robertson said the result was “a huge blow”. “We played with a lot of confidence for large parts of the game —— played the ball really well,” he said. “Then I don’t know what happened in the last 10 to 15 minutes. It can’t happen in a game like this. We really need to look at that. Every game is massive for us now. We need to put an end to it.”
Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers was delighted with the win over his former club. “It was a very good win. They players deserved it. “We didn’t sink when we went a goal behind. We stayed calm and the players were brilliant in that period —- a real collective team performance. “You can see the improvement in the team’s mindset. Our reaction was superb,” he said.
In another 2020/2021 EPL match, Burnley moved up two places to 15th; thanks to a 3-0 win at Crystal Palace, with Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Jay Rodriguez and Matthew Lowton scoring.
Terrible things have really been happening and it’s so unfortunate that many children have been dragged into such kind of bad things happening in the society. When a child is seen doing wrong and his excesses are not curbed early enough by his parents or guardian, it becomes difficult stopping such children when they get into their teenage years.
I remember back in the days growing up and was still in primary school, how whenever I take my pencils to school, I don’t return home with them because some of my classmates, steals them either during break hours or while I’m taking a nap, whenever I realize this I usually cry but no one would speak up as to who took the pencils, until one day I caught this very boy and that was how it ended, because I reported him to our class teacher, he was disciplined and that ended my pencils from missing.
Some parents are the reason some of their children turn out in life, the way they did because while they are stealing and bringing it home, they kept encouraging by helping them to hide all that they bring to the house.
In a trending video I came across today February 13,2021 that struck me and broke my heart is that of a small boy, who was caught with pistol stolen from the Nigerian Police Force, during the End SARS peaceful protesters that was hijacked by the hoodlums, to cause mayhem in the country. The boy if closely looked at, is not more than 10 or at maximum 12years of age.
He claimed his brother was the one who taught him how to shoot the pistol and he has joined his brother who is now at large with his gang members to rob people of their belongings and so far from the time he joined them, they have killed two people. He looked like one who has been introduced to weed smoking, judging from his looks and lips that looks so much like that of a chain smoker.
He claimed that it was during the End SARS protest at Oba market in Benin-City, Edo State that they stole the guns from the police station they set ablaze. He said whenever they rob their victims of their money, they go to Ted located at somewhere called Cartel in Benin-City to share the money. This boy’s case to me, is case of a boy from a dysfunctional home.
