Larry Flynt, founder of Hustler magazine and self-proclaimed “smut peddler who cares”, has died aged 78.
Flynt died in his sleep at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles with family by his side, according to his manager.
He frequently courted controversy and was subject to lawsuits during a career spanning five decades.
Flynt was shot in 1978 while standing outside a courthouse in Georgia during a trial for obscenity.
The assassination attempt left him a paraplegic. He had his wheelchair gold-plated and lined with velvet.
The man alleged to be the perpetrator was never charged. However he was executed years later, in 2013, in connection with a series of unrelated murders.
Born in Kentucky in 1942, Flynt was a school drop-out who began his career in the adult industry by launching strip clubs in Ohio along with his brother.
A newsletter about those clubs evolved into Hustler magazine, which was first published in 1974.
According to Flynt, at the height of circulation the publication was bought by about three million people a month.
His pioneering legal battles were depicted in the 1996 film The People vs Larry Flynt, in which he was played by Woody Harrelson.
One lawsuit in particular saw Flynt sued for a sexual parody cartoon of televangelist Jerry Falwell that appeared in Hustler in 1983.
The cartoon, a fake advert, showed Mr Falwell saying his first sexual encounter had been with his mother in an outhouse.
Mr Falwell sued Flynt for $50m (£36m) for libel and won in a lower court, but the case went up to the US Supreme Court.
Flynt then won the case with a unanimous 8-0 verdict, which reinforced free speech rights and protections for satire in the US.
His business empire extended into other areas of entertainment and was thought to have a $150m turnover at one point, according to Reuters.
Away from pornography, he launched and lost long-shot bids at political office and was married five times.
Minda Gowen, spokeswoman for Larry Flynt Publications, said Wednesday that he died from “from the recent onset of a sudden illness”.
His brother told US media that the death was caused by heart failure.
Getafe’s Spanish defender Marc Cucurella (L) challenges Real Madrid’s midfielder Marvin Park during the Spanish league football match between Real Madrid CF and Getafe CF at the Alfredo di Stefano stadium in Valdebebas, on the outskirts of Madrid on February 9, 2021.
Real Madrid’s Marvin Olawale Akinlabi Park – who is of Nigerian origin – was on Tuesday handed his first senior start for the club as the Los Blancos defeated Getafe 2-0 in a Spanish La Liga match. Coach Zinedine Zidane named the 20-year-old born to a Nigerian father and a South Korean mother in the lineup as the multiple European champions moved within five points of league leaders, Atletico Madrid.
The fleet-footed right-winger had before now impressed for the team’s youth sides and did not disappoint in his first start for the club. He made his debut for the Spanish giants in their 2020/21 league opener against Real Sociedad, coming on as a 70th-minute substitute.
“An attacking-minded midfielder who is a danger when he joins the attack, his ability in one-on-one situations also makes him a threat,” Real Madrid wrote about the youngster who joined them in 2016 after a spell with English side, Tranmere Rovers. “He took his first steps in the game in his native Balearic Islands and possesses a very direct style, which fully exploits his pace and power. He also has a fine ability with both feet.” The midfielder caught the former French legend’s eyes in a friendly against Getafe in September 2020.
He was, however, away from the first team before making a return to the senior side for last weekend’s game against Huesca. The youngster had replaced Ferland Mendy, playing in the right-wing in his second senior match for the Madrid-based club. Marvin played a key role in the club’s UEFA Youth League, bagging two assists in the semi-finals and one more in the final last season.

‘After the corona test, which he also needs to enter Germany, he will travel home and will not be available to us until further notice.’
‘Jerome came to me and asked me to return home. After a negative (COVID-19) test he will return home and not be available until further notice.’
Speaking about Lenhardt’s death, a friend told MailOnline: ‘Yesterday was her son Noah’s birthday. Kasia was at home on her own. A member of her family called the police because they could not get hold of her and they were worried.
‘She died a week after Jerome gave an interview in which he said their relationship was over. He said some really nasty things about Kasia. She was very upset by it.’

Lenhardt had been dating 32-year-old Boateng for 15 months before their relationship crashed on February 2 amid bitter accusations of blackmail and infidelity.
German news outlet Bild exclusively revealed that Kasia had been involved in a car accident in the footballer’s Mini on January 5, resulting in the vehicle being a write-off.
After crashing into a street lamp, Kasia was taken to hospital where she was found to have 0.6 per thousand alcohol in her blood.

“I had to take this step and draw a line. I apologise to everyone I’ve hurt especially with my ex-girlfriend Rebecca and our children.
“I am disappointed in myself too. A man has to take responsibility and act in the interests of his family and I’m doing it now.
“I wish Kasia all the best. Jerome Boateng.”
Kasia responded by saying she had ended the relationship because of the World Cup winner’s “lies and constant infidelity”.
She also branded Boateng ‘the devil’ and vowed to ‘speak up’ and ‘fight back’ once she had recovered from the break-up.
‘I will definitely speak up, but I have to collect myself. Please give me time. I will fight back! Because I’ve never been so deceived, used, and lied to. Give me a moment,’ she wrote.

A Nigerian man based in the United States who came back to the country to have a good time with his loved ones has had a hell of an encounter with kidnappers.
It was gathered that the United States of America-based Nigerian reportedly escaped from kidnappers’ den after turning the heat against one of his captors and beating him to a pulp, according to a report by Punch. The man, identified simply as Chinweizu, was said to have been abducted on the Akara Isuikwuato Road in Abia State alongside an unidentified woman. It was gathered that the kidnappers, suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, seized the duo around 3pm on February 3, 2021, and took them into the forest. A source close to Chinweizu said while inside the bush, three of the kidnappers left the male victim with one of their armed colleagues and took the young woman away to possibly rape her.
But Chinweizu was said to have attacked the kidnapper when he turned his back on him.The source, who preferred not to be mentioned, said, “He (Chineweizu) kicked the kidnapper from behind and picked his gun and used it’s butt to consistently hit the eyes of the gang member until the white part of one of eyes almost popped out.”The source, who preferred anonymity, said the kidnapper’s gang members left the young woman when they heard the cry of their colleague and rushed to help him. The source stated,
“But before they could get there, the kidnapped victim had gone after inflicting a serious injury on one of the kidnappers, who is a Fulani man. He (Chinweizu) also took the kidnapper’s gun away.“He reported the matter to the Army and said the kidnappers would rush their colleague to a nearest hospital. Some of the hospitals were informed about the development and on the same day, the kidnappers came to one of the hospitals with their injured colleague.“They were immediately rounded up. The victim was called upon to identify them before they were taken away by security operatives.”
Another source in Isuikwuato corroborated the story of how Chinweizu escaped from the kidnappers’ camp. The source said, “They kidnapped an Ahaba man and a woman of unconfirmed origin. Both were taken to their camp in the heart of the forest.“The man disarmed and wounded one of his captors and escaped, while the others were attempting to rape the female captive. The cry of the disarmed kidnapper disrupted the rape and the two victims escaped in different directions.“Today, three of the kidnappers came to Ahaba junction for medical attention for the injured kidnapper. Unknown to them, a trap had been set and in time, soldiers and policemen arrived and took them away.” Confirming the incident, the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, Geoffrey Ogbonna, said the suspected kidnappers seized Chinweizu and a woman after they had shot a 63-year-old man dead.
When people find love that leads to a lasting union, it is a thing of joy for everyone that is watching on the outside. So a couple, some hours ago, Victor Udochukwu Nwaogu popularly known as Nkubi gave us some really uplifting news – that he is getting married and he is finally off the market of single guys. He is a TV presenter and an actor who has been in the Nigerian entertainment industry for over a decade. He announced his marriage via his official Instagram account and he shared some really cute photos of him and his wife to be.
Nkubi’s marriage announcement becomes the most significant when we remembered an interview he had back in 2016. The man is a successful man but a mere glance would reveal what his limitation is – his height. This height has limited him even in acting for it is hard to find a character that is tailored to his height but that is by the way. In the interview, he revealed that he had been in a serious relationship with a girl who he planned to marry. When it was time to see the parens of the girl, they said, they cannot give him their daughter because of his height. The girl was someone who liked to obey her parents so she called off the relationship in his own words.
Succeeding against all odds is not new to Nkubi at all despite limitation and disappointments. He found a way to succeed in Nollywood despite his obvious limitation. Now he has won yet another battle to add to his accomplishments and become a husband. He has put behind him the pain of rejection, mended his broken heart and now he has found his missing rib.
Mary Wilson, who co-founded The Supremes and remained a member of the group until they split up, has died at the age of 76.
The singer passed away at her home in Henderson, Nevada, her publicist Jay Schwartz announced, but he did not confirm the cause of death.
The Supremes were known for hits such as Baby Love and You Can’t Hurry Love.
The group was founded in Detroit as The Primettes in 1959, when Wilson was 15 years old.
Singer Beverley Knight tweeted:”Mary Wilson along with Florence Ballard and Diana Ross changed the game permanently. Hit after hit after hit, on regular rotation to this day. A Supreme Titan may have left us but that legacy will never be surpassed.”
The founder of Motown Records, Berry Gordy, said in a statement: “I was extremely shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of a major member of the Motown family, Mary Wilson of the Supremes.
image captionMary Wilson, Florence Ballard and Diana Ross made up The Supremes
“The Supremes opened doors for themselves, the other Motown acts, and many, many others… I was always proud of Mary. She was quite a star in her own right and over the years continued to work hard to boost the legacy of the Supremes. Mary Wilson was extremely special to me. She was a trailblazer, a diva and will be deeply missed.”
A funeral for Wilson will be held privately due to Covid-19 restrictions, her family said, but a celebration of her life will take place later this year.
Wilson was an original member of the group alongside Diana Ross, Florence Ballard and Barbara Martin.
Martin left the group before they became successful, and The Supremes continued as a trio. The Supremes became Motown’s most successful act of the 1960s scoring 12 number one singles in the US.
image captionWilson released a memoir in 1986 titled Dreamgirl: My Life As a Supreme
Their first number one was 1964’s Where Did Our Love Go, which was soon followed by Baby Love, Come See About Me and Stop! In the Name of Love.
Baby Love was the only single to reach number one in the UK, but several of their singles hit the top 10 including You Keep Me Hangin’ On and You Can’t Hurry Love.
In 1967, Ballard was replaced by Cindy Birdsong and Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross and the Supremes.
Three years later, Ross left to pursue a solo career. After her departure, Wilson was left as the only original member of the group.
Wilson continued performing with Cindy Birdsong and Jean Terrell as the “new” Supremes, better known today as the “70s Supremes”.
The group disbanded following Wilson’s 1977 departure.

Wilson became a New York Times bestselling author in 1986 with the release of her autobiography, Dreamgirl: My Life As a Supreme.
The Supremes were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
Interest in the group’s legacy was renewed after the release of the film Dreamgirls in 2006, which starred Beyoncé Knowles and Jennifer Hudson.
The movie was based on the story of The Supremes, although Wilson said it did not depict their true story.
In 2019, Wilson took part in Dancing With The Stars, the US version of Strictly Come Dancing.
Just two days before her death, Wilson uploaded a video on YouTube announcing that she was working on releasing new solo material.
