Malian singer detained in Italy over child custody row

Famous Malian singer Rokia Traoré has been arrested at the main international airport in Italy’s capital Rome over a conviction in Belgium arising from a child custody dispute.

She was arrested at Fiumicino airport as she flew in for a concert, Italian media reported.

A spokesperson for the airport told the AFP news agency on Sunday that border police had confirmed her arrest.

Traoré was initially detained in France in 2020 on a Belgian arrest warrant after failing to heed a court order to hand over her child to her Belgian father.

Months after she was conditionally released, she flew out to Mali on a private flight, defying a ban from leaving France until her extradition to Belgium.

Last October, Traoré was sentenced in absentia to two years in prison by a court in Belgium on charges of parental abduction for “failing to hand over a child to the person entitled to custody”, Belgian prosecutors told AFP.

Her daughter, who is now aged nine years, has lived in Mali since turning four.

A lawyer for the child’s father, Traoré’s former partner, reportedly said he had not had any contact with his daughter since then.

When she was initially arrested in 2020, she had been travelling from Mali to Brussels intending to appeal against the custody ruling, her lawyers had said.

Mali’s government then came out in support of the singer, saying that she had a diplomatic passport.

Traoré is one of Africa’s best known vocalists. She has won several awards, including the BBC Award for World Music in 2004 and the 2009 World Music Album of the year in the Victoires de la Musique, the French equivalent of the Grammys.

She is also known for her advocacy work for refugees, becoming a goodwill ambassador for the UN’s High Commissioner for Refugees in 2015 in West and Central Africa.

Davido pressuring me for s*x despite being with Chioma- Sophia Momodu

Sophia Momodu, baby mama to Nigerian singer David Adeleke known as Davido, has accused her baby daddy of pressuring her for s*x despite his public relationship with Chioma.

The allegation came days after Davido took a legal action to get joint custody of their daughter, Imade.

Ms Momodu’s allegation is contained in a statement dated June 22, 2024, issued by her legal representatives, Punuka Attorneys & Solicitors and Bimpe Ajegbomogun & Co, and exclusively obtained by Pulse Nigeria.

According to the statement, Sophia and Davido were in a relationship from 2014 to 2017 and then again from 2020 to 2022.

During these periods, Davido provided financial support for their daughter, covering essential expenses such as school fees, rent, and other living costs.

Ms Momodu alleged that since their breakup in July 2022, Davido has been harassing her with demands for sexual favours.

The statement issued by her legal representatives read: “Since then, David has repeatedly threatened to make Sophia’s life miserable if she does not make herself available to him sexually.”

The statement highlights Davido’s lack of contact with their daughter since July 2022 saying that despite Sophia not denying him access, Davido has allegedly chosen not to see their daughter, missing significant events in her life such as birthday and Christmas.

Her lawyers emphasized, “Sophia has never denied him the opportunity to see his daughter. He has not reached out on special occasions such as her birthday or Christmas for the past two years, which has left his daughter distressed and questioning why her father has cut contact with her.”

Ms Momodu claimed that Davido failed to pay for their daughter’s school fees since July 2022, leading to repeated contacts from the school. Eventually, Davido’s father, Adedeji Adeleke, had to step in to settle the outstanding fees.

“David has not fulfilled his financial responsibilities towards their daughter, leaving her school fees unpaid,” the statement added.

Since their breakup, the lawyers alleged that Ms Momodu had borne the financial burden alone, covering rent, living costs, healthcare, and other expenses for their daughter.

Despite these challenges, she recounted attempts to establish a formal co-parenting arrangement two years ago, which were allegedly rebuffed by Davido and his legal team.

Her lawyers noted, “Two years ago, Sophia initiated efforts through her legal team to establish a formal co-parenting arrangement with David. But he and his lawyers have consistently refused to cooperate toward a mutually agreeable resolution. Sophia has never denied David access to their daughter, only access to her body and intimacy, which he has taken issue with.”

The statement read that Ms Momodu wished Davido well in his public relationship and she refrained from commenting.

“David is in a publicly known relationship, and Sophia wishes him well. She seeks to move forward in her life free from harassment and verbal abuse. Sophia refrains from further comment as the matter has escalated into a legal dispute,” her lawyers stated.

Despite Davido frequently referring to Chioma as his wife, suggesting they may already be legally married, they are still anticipated to hold a formal wedding ceremony soon.
