One year after, Adams begs FG, Lagos to compensate Abule Ado explosion victims

The Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has called on the Federal and Lagos State Government to compensate the victims of the March 2020 Abule Ado pipeline explosion in Lagos.

Adams made the call on Sunday in Lagos, at a memorial prayer in honour of those who lost their lives during the pipeline explosion on March 15, 2020.

The event was organised by the Soba Landlords and Residents Association (SLARA), and was held at the site of the former Bethlehem Girls College where five people, including the School’s Principal, Rev. Sis. Henriatta Alokha, died.

Adams, who is also the Chairman of the Association, said the event was to ensure that memories of the incident; the lives lost, the losses incurred and the damage to the community, we’re not forgotten.

He said the occasion was also to remind the government of the promises they made to the victims of the explosion and urged them to fulfil them.

According to him, it was unfortunate that the association had to resort to publicly reminding the government of their promises.

He noted that 30 people including the Association’s Vice Chairman, his wife and two children, died instantly from the explosion, and over 300 houses were destroyed during the explosion.

“The governor was here, even the speaker of the house was here, some South-West governors were here and they made promises to those affected by the disaster that certain amount will be paid as compensation.

We are using this opportunity to appeal to the LASG, as a state with honour and the economic nerver centre of our nation to fulfill all promises made to the victims. The federal government should do something tangible for the victims,” he said.

Meanwhile, Adams disclosed that the Association had taken legal action against the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) over the disaster.

Also, Vice Chairman of SLARA, Philips Akinduro, urged LASG to help improve the lives of the members of the community by fulfilling its promises to the victims.

He said the state had set up a N2 billion trust fund for the victims with an initial contribution of N250 million and another N200 million from The Governors’ Forum.

“Many of our landlords borrowed money to do renovations that you see today. Many of our members were hospitalised, only few have paid the hospital bills,” he said.

Akinduro urged LASG to release monies that had been contributed so far to help cushion the suffering of the victims.

The traditional ruler of the community, Jimoh Agbebeji, said the community was yet to recover from the incident and would appreciate every help rendered to the victims.

CP orders probe of policeman for allegedly snatching housewife, detaining son

The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Monday Kuryas, has ordered the probe of a policeman, Danladi Edibo, for allegedly snatching the wife of another man in the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed, disclosed this to newsmen on Sunday in Awka.

Mohammed said a petition had been received against Danladi and it was receiving attention, noting that “it won’t be right to pre-empt the investigation.”

Meanwhile, Danladi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police attached to the Anti-Cult Unit in Enugwu-Ukwu in the Njikoka Local Government Area of the state, allegedly handcuffed and detained 22-year-old Chukwunonso Ogbukagu, for disapproving his relationship with his mother.

Chukwunonso, who revealed this to journalists after he escaped from the unlawful detention, said he visited Nimo, a town in the Njikoka LGA to see his mother, who recently left his dad to rent a separate apartment, but noticed that she had a male friend, who always visited her in the apartment.

He said, “When I demanded from my mother who the man was, I found out that he was the same police officer, who had a problem with my father and also caused my parents to separate.

“Having realised that I knew who he was, he called some policemen, who came with guns and handcuffed and detained me in a toilet in the apartment.

I stayed there for four days without food or water, and later I realised that I could die if I continued to be there; so, I summoned courage and managed to escape.

“I’m begging the Commissioner of Police to come to my aid, because my life is in danger as Danladi may come after me.”

The father of the victim, Ikenna Ogbukagu, had petitioned the CP about the development, begging him to restrain Danladi from further harassing him and members of his family.

He said, “ASP Danladi Edibo has been harassing me and members of my family. He took away my wife from me and I said I had no problem with that, that he could keep her. He has taken her, rented a house for her in Nimo and I did not protest, yet he has been threatening me.

“The last time he came to my house around 1am with police officers, destroyed my doors and arrested me, saying that I sponsored cultists. There is nothing he has not done to me. I am very afraid for my life now; that is why I petitioned the Commissioner of Police to come to my rescue.”

Beyoncé and Taylor Swift make history at the 2021 Grammy Award

Beyoncé has set a new record at the Grammy Awards with her 28th win.

The star is now the most-awarded woman in Grammys history, overtaking bluegrass singer Alison Krauss.

“I am so honoured, I’m so excited,” she said while accepting her record-breaking trophy, for best R&B performance.

Taylor Swift also made history at Sunday’s ceremony, by becoming the first female artist ever to win album of the year three times.

The star was rewarded for her lockdown album Folklore – after previously winning with Fearless in 2010 and the pop opus 1989 in 2016.

Only three other artists have ever won the album of the year prize three times: Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder.

  • Record of the year: Billie Eilish – Everything I Wanted
  • Song of the year: H.E.R. – I Can’t Breathe
  • Best new artist: Megan Thee Stallion

More winners and nominees

Beyoncé’s 28th Grammy was presented in honour of Black Parade, a celebration of black power and resilience, which she released on June teenth last year.

“As an artist, I believe it’s my job to reflect the times, and it’s been such a difficult time,” she said as she collected the award.

“So I wanted to uplift, encourage, celebrate all of the beautiful black queens and kings that continue to inspire me and inspire the world”.

The star has now equalled super-producer Qunicy Jones’ total of 28 Grammys. Only classical conductor Sir Georg Solti has more, with 31.

Beyoncé was also part of another historic moment – when Megan Thee Stallion became the first female artist to win the best rap song award.

The Houston musician picked up the prize for her breakout hit Savage (Remix), on which Beyoncé delivers a guest verse.

H.E.R
image captionH.E.R. also won best R&B song for Better Than I Imagine

Black Parade was not the only award-winner song to reflect the Black Lives Matter movement: R&B Singer H.E.R. won song of the year for I Can’t Breathe, which quotes the last words of George Floyd.

The 46-year-old died while being arrested by police in Minneapolis last year. His death, along with that of Breonna Taylor, sparked a global wave of protests.

Accepting the prize, H.E.R. said she never imagined “that my fear and my pain would turn into impact”.

“That’s why I write music,” she added, “and I’m so, so grateful”.

The singer, whose real name is Gabriella Wilson, was accompanied by her co-writer Tiara Thomas, and she recalled how they’d written I Can’t Breathe “over FaceTime” last summer.

“I recorded this song by myself in my bedroom at my mom’s house,” she said. “And I want to thank my dad – he cried, he was in tears when I wrote the song and I played it for him. He was the first person I played it for.”

“But remember,” she concluded. “We are the change that we wish to see and you know that fight that we had in us the summer of 2020, keep that same energy. Thank you.”

‘Bringing the concert to you’

Aside from the awards, the four-hour ceremony deliberately put the focus on live music.

“I know that you haven’t been able to go to a concert in a long time,” said host Trevor Noah. “So tonight we’re bringing the concert to you.”

Harry Styles
image captionHarry Styles was the first performer of the night

The show kicked off with three back-to-back performances from Harry Styles, Billie Eilish and Haim, who performed from a circle of stages that recalled the set-up of Jools Holland’s BBC TV show.

Styles raised the curtain with his hit single Watermelon Sugar, sporting a lime green feather boa and an open-chested leather jacket.

The song went on to win best pop solo performance later in the ceremony, making him the first member of One Direction to win a Grammy – either as a solo artist or as part of the group.

“It’s crazy to think someone that talented and handsome is from the same place as Boris Johnson,” joked Noah as Styles’ performance ended.

Billie Eilish, who dominated last year’s ceremony, followed with her ballad Everything I Wanted; while Haim played The Steps from their album-of-the-year nominated Women In Music Pt III.

Earlier in the day, Eilish was awarded best song written for visual media, for her Bond theme No Time To Die.

“It was a dream to make the song,” said the singer. “I have no words. I can’t believe this is real. I couldn’t believe it was real then…”

Billie Eilish
image captionElish won the “big four” Grammy prizes last year: Album of the year, record of the year, song of the year and best new artist

The majority of the ceremony was held in a marquee outside the LA Convention Center, with nominees sitting at socially-distanced tables.

“So there’s more tension in that tent than at a family reunion at Buckingham Palace,” joked Noah, who added: “Tonight is going to be the biggest outdoor event this year, besides the storming of the capital”.

Other prize-winners included Dua Lipa, who picked up best pop vocal album; and Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande, who became the first female duo to win best pop collaboration for Rain On Me.

Megan Thee Stallion
image captionMegan Thee Stallion’s speech for best new artist was interrupted by passing traffic

One of the most emotional speeches came from Megan Thee Stallion, who dedicated her best new artist prize to her mother, who died of a brain tumour in 2019.

“She couldn’t be here with me tonight,” she had said on the red carpet earlier in the night. “But she always knew that I would be at the Grammys, and I would be like, ‘Oh mom, that’s so far away’ but it came so quick.

“And I’m just so appreciative that I’m here.”

Performance highlights included Taylor Swift, who sang a medley of songs from her lockdown albums Folklore and Evermore, from an enchanted forest set.

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion got together for the first ever TV performance of their X-rated single WAP. While Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak unveiled their new “supergroup” Silk Sonic, channelling the 70s soul sounds of Earth, Wind And Fire.

The show also highlighted the plight of music venues by having staff from venues, including New York’s Apollo Theater and LA’s Troubador, present some of the awards.

Michael Ikechukwu murders his 38-yr-old girlfriend for refusing to leave

A 38-year-old lady, Chinyere Orji, is dead after her 27-year-old live-in lover, Michael Ikechukwu, allegedly stabbed her during a quarrel, last Monday, at their apartment at 11, Abuja street, Alaba Rago, off Mile 2 Badagry expressway.

Vanguard News reports that the mother-of-two was killed by the suspect over prostitution. Michael claimed to have known the deceased as commercial s*x worker at Apapa, for three years and four months , adding that the incident that led to her death occurred during an argument on his insistence for her to quit prostitution.
“When I asked where she was going, she said I shouldn’t ask her. I locked the door, preventing her from leaving. “She started shouting at the top of her voice that I should open the door and that I should not ask her where she was going, since I knew she was a hustler.

At that point, I started calming her down but she insisted on leaving. She said she was going to look for money. She started scattering everywhere, insisting she must leave. Out of provocation I slapped her and told her to re-arrange the room.

In an attempt to scare her, I slammed the standing mirror on the ground and it shattered. Unfortunately, a piece pierced into her right rib and she started shouting that I had stabbed her. I rushed outside to get a tricycle to take her to the hospital. By the time I came back, I met policemen attached to TaskForce, in the apartment.

They held me and informed me that she was dead. They took me to their office, where I spent the night. “The next day I was taken to Ojo Police division from where I was brought to the SCIID. If I had known, I would have allowed her to go and hustle”.

Last year, I told her to stop prostituting because I intended to marry her. She had two children of ages 21 and 9. Her first child is married with a baby, while the younger one lives with her aunt. Yet I didn’t mind spending the rest of my life with her . I never meant to kill her, I only wanted to prevent her from going out that night “, he said

Mba Daniel, UNN Student Commits Suicide After His Phone Was Seized In Exam Hall

A 300 level Biochemistry student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Mba Daniel, was on Saturday, confirmed dead after committing suicide, VANTAGE NEWS reports.

Our correspondent gathered that the student apparently made different attempts to take his own life between Wednesday and Friday before he eventually succeeded in hanging himself.

VANTAGE NEWS learnt that his phone was seized by a lecturer on examination supervision duty after he was caught cheating with it while writing BCH 353 exam on Wednesday, 10th March.

Daniel’s course mates who spoke on the condition of anonymity said that he last came to school after the incident on Wednesday. Some of them believe his quest to take his own life was due to depression that he suffered after he was caught engaging in examination malpractice.

His lodge mates at his residence in the Odim Gate area of the university community where the ugly incident happened told VANTAGE NEWS that Hypo bleach mixed with dye, hair relaxer and Captain Jack liquor were found in his room.

They also reported that rope tied in the ceiling of his room, knife, syringe and belt were also found.

According to them, it seemed he had attempted to take his life through the items but was unsuccessful.

Daniel eventually hung himself at the balcony in the second floor of the three storey building where he fell from the rope and landed on the floor, suffering a broken leg.

He was rushed by neighbours to a nearby hospital where he was confirmed dead in the early hours of Saturday.

Confirming the incident, the President of the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry Students, UNN chapter, Silas Ijaja, said, “the information reaching me through the closest person is that the guy attempted to kill himself with corrosive chemical, relaxer and strong ethanol he mixed and drank but it did not work. He then used rope to hang himself from the balcony of his room where he fell from and fractured his leg. He was rushed to the hospital and confirmed dead on Saturday.

It is obvious he died of depression over the incident that happened in exam hall on Wednesday. It may not also be unrelated to his inability to cope with the pressure of the ongoing examination. We have a lot to read and write this period and it is driving so many students into depression,” he added.

All efforts made to contact the Head of the Biochemistry department and school authority prove abortive.

Abducted Kaduna students appeal for help

The abducted students of the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation, Mando, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, on Saturday, March 13, were depicted in a video purportedly released by the terrorists, appealing to the Federal Government to pay the ransom being demanded.

Bandits had invaded the Kaduna college around 11.30 pm on Thursday, abducting 39 students, comprising 23 females and 16 males, according to the state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan.

The school is located close to the Nigerian Defence Academy along the Kaduna Airport Road.

In the viral video, the kidnapped students were seen sitting on the ground and pleading that the ransom for their release be paid while they were surrounded by about seven gun-wielding bandits dressed in military camouflage.

Some of the females were dressed only in their nightwear, some only having wrappers covering their bodies. The kidnappers were seen using whips on some of the students.

Many of the students were seen crying and begging the government to come to their aid.

Ripples Nigeria gathered that the kidnappers had earlier contacted the school management on Friday to demand ransom.

According to a parent, the kidnappers demanded N500m ransom.

Some parents and friends of the kidnapped students confirmed the authenticity of the viral video on Saturday.

In the video, a male student spoke on behalf of others, calling on the government to raise the ransom for their release before it was too late.

He said, “We are pleading with the government to come and rescue us. Most of us here have been badly injured. Time is running out. Most of us here have health issues.

“They (bandits) are complaining about the government trying to send security agencies to rescue us, which is almost impossible because they have surrounded us here and they said if anybody tries to come and rescue us or do anything by force, they are going to take our lives.

“We are appealing to the government to come now that it’s early because these people have bad minds towards us. We are appealing to the government to come and help us.”

A female student, following an order from one of the kidnappers, said in Hausa that their abductors had warned that should troops attempt to rescue them, “none of us will go back home alive.”

However, the Presidency on Saturday said it would not allow kidnappers and bandits to destroy the school system.

In a statement titled ‘President Buhari Commends the Military for their Prompt Response to Kaduna Abduction,’ the President was quoted as saying the military’s efforts led to the rescue of 180 students and eight staff members.

Buhari also ordered that the abducted students should be found and returned safely to their families.

It is always a case of women being judged or stigmatised. ”

On breaking up with her former fiance, she stated;

We had a little misunderstanding and the rule was that if one party offended the other, the guilty person would do a frog jump.
I also do it when I am wrong.
However, he refused to do the punishment when he erred because his friends told him not to.
But I have forgiven him.”

She went on to reveal what led to their break. Cossy had this to say;

“My relationship with my ex-lover went sour because we allowed too many people to have a say in the relationship.

Both of us are on talking terms and I have asked him why, he said some false things about me on Instagram.

He told me he had deleted the false claims from his page.

When I leave a man, I do not try to go back to him.

I try to leave in peace and avoid being enemies with my past lovers. I guess he was just trying to get attention.

He sought to fleece him using the cloned gmail account: dawnayero@gmail.com.

The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him.

Following his ‘guilty plea’, counsel to the EFCC, Andrew Akoja, invited to the witness box, one Olumide Olasode, an operative of the Commission to review the facts of the case.

He narrated how intelligence report led to the arrest of the defendant on September 14, 2020 at Offa area of Kwara State.

Petition from concerned citizens of Offa, statement of the defendant and all the fraudulent messages printed out of his email were tendered and admitted in evidence by the Court.

Akoja, thereafter, urged the Court to convict the defendant based on his plea, the exhibits tendered and the evidence of the sole prosecution witness (PW1)

Consequently, Justice Oyinloye found Ademola guilty of the charge and accordingly sentenced him.

He, however, gave him an option of fine of N50,000.

The judge in addition, ordered the forfeiture to the Federal Government of the convict’s phone, used as instrument to perpetrate the crime.

Why I dumped my victim’s body in the bush and fled – Nursing mother

It was an accident and I was told that I would be hanged if I report the case to the police.” Those were the words of Anita Harrison, 29-year-old nursing mother, Anita Harrison accused of disposing off the body of a woman she knocked down while driving around Ikeja, Lagos, on March 3, 2021. She was responding to my question as to why she dumped her victim’s body in the bush and fled, without bothering to report the case to the police.

She was alleged to have knocked down the victim, later identified as Nafiat Idowu, picked her up initially and drove her to a hospital where she was confirmed dead. But on realizing that the victim, aged 35, was dead, Anita and her friend, at moment, at large, dumped the body at an isolated area of Ogun State and fled. But soon the game was up for her when she was later tracked down and arrested the following day. She is currently being detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti.

More information that has come to light since the incident shows that her world started crumbling when her victim’s family realized that their sister and wife who went to market to make some purchases was not back home as at dusk. They tried to reach her on her phones. But they were switched off. But on asking around, they were told that she had an accident. Said a police source: “The traffic warders who were also at the scene confirmed same but told the family that the person who hit her had taken her to the hospital. It was at the hospital that they were told that Nafiat was brought in dead and they advised the suspect to head to the nearest police station and report the incident. They also showed the family the picture of the vehicle and the body of their lifeless sister.”

How she was caught

Unknown to Anita, these details were what were used to track her down her after she dumped her victim’s body somewhere after the Long Bridge in Ibafo area of Ogun State.  The body was, later, discovered by a passerby who quickly raised an alarm. Togther with others, the woman who, incidentally, turned out to be a distant relative of the deceased, informed the police and they got the body evacuated to Sagamu General Hospital morgue. But the relative who did not initially establish the corpse’s identity, was taken aback when she got home to learn that her relative was involved in an accident and that the suspects disappeared with her body.

Equipped with the photograph of Anita Harrison’s car number plate and other photographs gotten from the hospital where she and her friend initially took the victim to, before she was confirmed dead on arrival, the police in Lagos swung into action. They were able to track her to her house.

Having been cornered with such incontravertible evidences, she broke down, admitted guilt and took the police to the scene where she dumped the body, only to find that it was longer there. Again, unknown to her, it had been evacuated a day earlier, on the order of police. It was then it occurred to the victim’s relative who helped to discover and to draw police attention to it that the unidentified corpse could be the woman they are talking about. With the information she provided, they were able to trace the police station that helped evacuate the body. The corpse still lying in Sagamu General Hospital mortuary will soon be sent for autopsy, Saturday Sun leant, as soon as it is confirmed to be COVID-19 free.

At the homicide section where she is being detained, along with her baby, Anita told Saturday Sun that she agreed to dump the body of the deceased and run away because of the fear of being accused of murder. The woman who hails from Akwa Ibom recounted what led to the accident.

Her account: “I live at No. 3 Sabina Close, Iju Ishaga, in Lagos and I am a housewife. On March 3, 2021, a friend called to meet her at Computer Village, Ikeja. She said she wants to introduce me to a business.  On our way back, at about 3pm, as I turned under the Ikeja bridge and faced the route that leads to Agege, people started screaming at me to stop. I did. As I stepped out of the car, I was made to understand that I hit a woman. I really did not see her till I was stopped. She was already on the ground. Some people that gathered around the scene helped my friend and me to put her in the car and carry her to the nearest hospital. I don’t remember the name of the hospital now, but it has a Yoruba name.

When we got there, the nurses came out and snapped the photo of my car and the woman. I begged them to attend to her immediately. But they told me to hold it, that the doctor would soon attend to us. About five minutes later, the doctor came out. He checked her and said that she had internal bleeding. The next thing he said was that the woman was dead. I fainted. When they finally revived me, the doctor told me to carry her corpse to the nearest police station. I was shattered and scared. It was then that my friend told me that we should not go the police as I could be accused of murder.”

In tears, Anita said she was terrified when it dawned on her that she could be sentenced to death according to her friend. “I was confused and scared. She told me that dumping the body was the only way out since no one else was with us at the hospital. She warned me that I could be sentenced to death and she would have to testify that what happened was true. We waited till it was dark and she took me to a spot where she said it would be easy to dump the body and no one would see us. She said that the police would find the corpse and her family would pick it and say that it was a hit-and-run incident. It was already dark, so it was easy for us to dump it and disappear. We drove to a place along Lagos-Sagamu expressway and stopped at a lonely spot in Ibafo. My friend quickly stepped off and dragged the body down and we zoomed off.

I dropped her off at Berger and drove home. When I got home, I told my husband what happened and he advised that we report to the police since it was an accident. He made some calls and I agreed to turn myself in the following day. But on that day while he was preparing to drive me to the police station to report the matter, he was stopped at the gate. The men that stopped him told him that they were policemen from Ikeja and that they were looking for me. This was how I was arrested.

“I took them to the place where the body was dumped but it was no longer there. But later, they were able to trace it. I thank God that the body was found. If they did not find it, I would have been accused of using her for ritual purpose. It was an accident; I was so scared when it happened. My friend who helped me cannot be found as her phones are all switched off. My husband did not know what happened; neither did he advise me to throw away the body. My husband is a food supplements marketer and a good man.”

Anita who has a valid driver’s licence which she got in Lagos, said she has been driving for more than two years. But right now, she is in police detention with her seven months old baby who she is still breastfeeding. The state police spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the incident, said that the suspect would be charged to court after proper investigation. He advised motorists on the need to be cautious of other road users and to quickly report any accident to the nearest police station.
