Two Nigerians jailed in the UK for Covid-19 loan fraud

Two people of Nigerian descent, Timilehin Olasemo and David Akinneye are currently in jail in the UK for fraudulently claiming about ยฃ500k in loan meant for businesses affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The two Nigerians who exploited the UK Governmentโ€™s Coronavirus Bounce Back Loan Scheme (BBLS) by using the identities of eight innocent people to fraudulently obtain ยฃ489,000 have pleaded guilty to the crimes.

Due to the absence of the economic activity occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic, the UK Government initiated a scheme to support struggling businesses.

In a statement published on Wednesday by the Metropolitan police, Olasemo and Akinneye were said to have connived to benefit from illegal loan applications worth ยฃ489,000, and had received over ยฃ250,000 at the time of their arrest.

Olasemo, 39-year-old, who is said to be a human resource executive, was charged to court over โ€œconspiracy to commit fraudโ€, and impersonation and sentenced on Wednesday to three years and two months in prison

David Akinneye, aged 33, is described as her accomplice, and was sentenced to five years and six months in prison.

โ€œAkinneye was the first out of the two to be identified during ongoing enquiries into organised criminality by officers of the Metโ€™s North West London Economic Crime Unit. Olasemo was identified from evidence seized during Akinneyeโ€™s arrest,โ€ the statement reads.

โ€œOn Friday, 16 October, officers from Metโ€™s North West Economic Crime Unit, part of the Metropolitan Police Serviceโ€™s Central Specialist Crime Command, arrested Olasemo at her home address. She was charged and remanded in custody the same day.

The investigating officers identified that ยฃ489,000 worth of fraudulent loan applications were made using ten identities. Of this, ยฃ297,000 worth of loans were successfully obtained by the pair and dissipated. The remaining amount was successfully stopped by the banks.

โ€œIt was discovered that Olasemo had obtained and used the personal details of eight individuals in order to fraudulently apply for the loans. She had stolen these identities after accessing employee records containing personal information during her employment.

โ€œThe fraudulently obtained monies was paid into the business bank account before being dispersed into mule accounts and later withdrawn from cash machines. Throughout this process, Olasemo sought advice from an accomplice named Olufumi David Akinneye.

Akinneye provided Olasemo with guidance in relation to laundering the proceeds of the frauds and safe addresses to use as correspondence for accounts. He also acted as a middle-man between people who were willing to sell on their bank accounts for use in fraud and other fraudsters who needed mule accounts to receive money obtained from diversion frauds.โ€

Speaking on the conviction, Chris Collins of the Metropolitanโ€™s north west economic crime unit, said: โ€œTodayโ€™s result serves as evidence of the zero-tolerance approach the MPS takes to individuals found guilty of fraud.โ€

โ€œWe will continue to crack down on individuals who are found to be exploiting government schemes for their own monetary gain,โ€ he added.

Meanwhile, Akinneye, who was arrested in August 2020, was also found guilty of being involved in a romance scam.

UCH doctors commence five-day warning strike over IPPIS implementation

The Association of Resident Doctors, University College Hospital (UCH) Chapter, Ibadan, has embarked on a five-day warning strike over unpaid two-month salaries of its 370 members.

Dr Temitope Hussein told newsmen on Wednesday, March 17, in Ibadan that the strike would end on Saturday.

He said that the strike was to press home their protests over non-payment of the January and February salaries of the affected members.

According to him, 233 of the associationโ€™s members have also not been enrolled into theย Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS)ย and consequently affecting the payment of their emoluments.

Hussein said that the hospitalโ€™s management has not been responsive to the dialogue initiated by the association.

He, however, expressed hopes that at the expiration of the warning strike, an agreement would be reached.

Reacting, the spokesperson of the hospital, Mr Akintoye Akinrinlola, described as unfortunate the decision of the association to embark on a warning strike.

Akinrinlola said that the issues raised โ€œare national issues rather than issues peculiar to the hospitalโ€™โ€™.

According to him, the payment of salaries in UCH, which is a government-owned hospital, is done by the Federal Government.

The spokesperson said that although the national body of the association, the National Association of Resident Doctors was poised to embark on a national strike, it had held off on the action following interventions of the National Assembly and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.

โ€œNARDโ€™s decision to embark on a nationwide strike is currently on hold pending outcomes of meetings with stakeholders including the Minister of Health.

โ€œResident doctors in UCH are not the only ones affected by the non-payment of salaries and IPPIS data capturing.

Other doctors in other hospitals owned by the Federal Government are also affected and the Federal Government has started a dialogue with NARD to resolve the issue,โ€™โ€™ he said.

He said: โ€œFollowing how events are unfolding in the country, we are experiencing a serious conflict that I think in the history of Nigeria, this is about the first conflict that will give us a serious problem and the conflict is called asymmetric war.

โ€œWe have had in the past had some semblance of this type of war but the proper manifestation of it is the one we are seeing now. Asymmetric war is a war that requires all hands to be on deck if we really want to deal with it and nip it in the bud.

The 28-year-old revealed in her documentary Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil that the person faced no consequences after she came forward.

The singer does not say who the offender was, only that she “had to see this person all the time” afterwards.

“My MeToo story is me telling somebody that someone did this to me and they never got in trouble for it,” says Demi Lovato in it, according to Variety’s review.

“I’ve just kept it quiet because I’ve always had something to say, and I’m tired of opening my mouth.”

“And that didn’t matter to them, they did it anyways. And I internalised it and I told myself it was my fault because I still went in the room with him.”

In the series, she also talks about a “promise ring” which was worn by some young stars including herself and the Jonas Brothers, as a commitment to only have sex after marriage.

Drake reportedly making romantic advances towards Kim Kardashian following her split with Kanye West

Canadian Rapper, Drake has reportedly been showing interest in Kim Kardashian following her split from husband Kanye West.

Kim, 40, confirmed in February 2021 that she had filed for divorce from the rapper, bringing their almost seven-year marriage to an end.

Now, it is claimed Canadian rapper Drake has reached out to Kim in the wake of the split.

A source reportedly told Heat Magazine:

โ€œDrake could never understand what Kim saw in Kanye, he was saying for years how he wasnโ€™t the right guy for Kim and it would all end in tears.

โ€œHe was surprised it took her so long to realise, and started messaging her the moment it became clear that the divorce was inevitable.

Heโ€™s ready to see her whenever she says the word, basically, and heโ€™s confident that will happen fairly soon.โ€

The publication added that Kim has no intention of embarking on a new romance, with the source claiming:

โ€œKimโ€™s wary about getting involved with someone else too fast before the divorce is settled.โ€

Kimโ€™s representative, Christy Welder, confirmed the reality star had filed the divorce paperwork in a statement shared with The New York Times.

Drake and Kanye have had public spats in the past, with Kanye once tweeting: โ€œDrake called trying to threaten me.โ€
