Fighter Israel Adesanya loses BMW deal over rape comment

Nigerian-born UFC middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya has lost a massive sponsorship deal with the German-owned motor company, BMW following his rape comment in an Instagram post.

Israel Adesanya recently came under fire; for telling fellow UFC fighter and challenger, Kevin Holland, “I will fuckin’ rape you, bro” in a since-deleted Instagram post.

New Zealand’s Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson rebuked Adesanya’s remarks, stating: “There is never a time to make flippant comments about rape. It’s just not something anybody should do,” Robertson said on Radio New Zealand.

“I am sure Israel understands that. I believe he has deleted (the post) in question. It will be up to the UFC as to what they do. But I would certainly be making clear to him, and to anybody actually; that we have to take rape seriously. It is not an issue that anyone should be making jokes or flippant comments about at all.”

Israel Adesanya went on to issue an apology for his comments, but at least for one of his sponsors, it was too little, too late.

According to New Zealand news outlet Stuff, BMW has decided to part ways with Israel Adesanya days before he was reportedly set to be unveiled as the new face of BMW New Zealand.

BMW’s statement on the matter reads:

“Due to the comments made by an athlete online; we have reviewed our pending association with said athlete; and we have decided not to push forward with a specific ambassador for the brand at this time in New Zealand.”

Police arrests four for alleged murder of teenager in Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with the abduction and murder of one Edidiong Wilson, a 19-year-old, in the Eket Local Government Area of the state.

The suspects, who include a woman, who fled to Ondo State, were arrested by operatives of the homicide section of the command, after an intelligence report.

The state’s Commissioner of Police, Andrew Amiengheme, while parading the suspects before journalists on Friday, alleged that the principal suspect, Christiana Wilson, conspired with the other suspects and abducted her stepson, Edidiong, to a nearby bush, in Eket.

According to Amiengheme, the suspects beat the victim to death and buried him in the bush, but later went and exhumed his decomposed body, cut off his head, and buried it separately on the pretext that his ghost was disturbing them.

“The suspects buried the deceased in the said bush and later went back to exhume the decomposed body, cut off his head, and buried it separately on December 30, 2020, at about 7 pm, on the ground that the ghost was disturbing them. They thereafter fled to Ondo State,” he said.

The police commissioner said the principal suspect had in her confessional statement claimed that she gave the deceased the sum of N100,000 being part of the proceeds from the sales of her late husband’s vehicle for safekeeping.

However, she claimed that when she demanded the money from the deceased, he told her that he saved the money in a microfinance bank in Eket LGA and never returned it.

Ali Baba tackles ‘irresponsible’ Nigerian politicians

Veteran Nigerian comedian, Ali Baba has slammed Nigerian politicians who fail in their responsibilities as leaders, but always revert to spiritualism for support.

The comedian admonished Nigerian politicians to quit making a mess of themselves and the nation, in his post on Instagram, adding, that the leaders should serve their citizens.

On Friday, March 26, Ali Baba in his post stated that enough is enough and it was the ideal time for politicians to desist from running to God when they have failed.

That’s why our country is in a mess.
People who shouldn’t be near political offices, are making policies for professionals,” he wrote.
And when they fail, they will now start praying and asking God to take control of our country, when they did not do what was supposed to be done.

“Like NIN… if we had carried out a proper Census in Nigeria, would that not help in planning. Naaaaaaa. We will pray to God to come count us.”

He went on to give instances of when professionalism rather than prayers can only give results.

“Why do you look for a driver with experience to drive Mother in Israel? No need for drivers license sef. Employ anyone in the delivery department. Just pray,” he wrote.

Court jails POS fraudster in Uyo

The Uyo Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Friday, March 26, 2021, secured the conviction and sentencing of one Austin Christopher Essiet, a Point of Sale (POS) fraudster before Justice Agatha Okeke of the Federal High Court sitting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Essiet met his waterloo on October 19, 2020, when he was arrested by operatives of the Commission along Ifa Road, Uyo. His arrest followed information by a concerned POS operator whose account was frozen by his bank after Essiet made withdrawal from different accounts, up to the tune of N150,000 from his POS booth on Oron Road..

According to the POS operator, shortly after the defendant left his shop, his account was immediately frozen by his bank, following reports of fraudulent withdrawals by the various account owners. He alleged further that the bank compelled him to pay back the withdrawn sums to the various owners.

The defendant was arraigned on Tuesday, November 17, 2020, and he pleaded “not guilty”, which led the prosecution, through its counsel, Agbo Abuh to open trial, to prove its case against Essiet.

On November 27, 2020, the prosecution called three witnesses; John Effiong Etim, the petitioner (PW1); Godswill Vesta Utong, Access Bank staff (PW2); and Unyime Moses, an EFCC operative (PW3).

The witnesses tendered documents which were admitted in evidence.

The prosecution however, closed its case on December 12, 2020. But when the matter came up on March 18, 2021, for the defendant to open defence, his counsel, G. N. Ezugwu informed the court of the defendant’s intention to change his plea and the matter was adjourned to March 26, 2021.

When the matter came up yesterday, Abuh informed the Court about an amended information and asked that the charge be read to the defendant. When the charge was read to him, he pleaded “guilty” to the one-count count charge bordering on fraud and stealing to the tune of N150,000.

In view of his plea, Abuh urged the Court to rely on the testimonies of the witnesses earlier presented and the exhibits admitted in evidence, to convict Essiet.

Justice Okeke convicted and sentenced the defendant to one year imprisonment without an option of fine, with effect from the date of his arrest. The court also ordered the convict to pay the sum of N150,000 as restitution to the petitioner.

Veteran TV show host and presenter, Frank Edoho has made a case for Ebuka Obi-Uchendu to continue as the host of Big Brother Naija after 4 years running.

His comment comes amid calls for a new face to be introduced as season 6 of BBNaija is set to begin in a few months.

It all started when a Twitter user opined that a lady known as Jollz would make a good host of the reality TV show, her post triggered a web of opinions as some said a female co-host should be added, another group called for Ebuka’s outright replacement, while others said that people like Nancy Isime and Frank Edoho would do better jobs.

However, Edoho did not buy into the idea of him being tapped to replace Ebuka. He said that if he was allowed to host WWTBAM for 13 years, why shouldn’t Ebuka who has successfully hosted it for four years, be allowed to host Big Brother even longer.

Taking to Twitter, he quoted a tweet calling for him to takeover from Ebuka and said;

What did Ebuka do to deserve all this? Why would you want to change someone that has done a show successfully for only 3 years and have him replaced with one who did WWTBAM for 13 years?

Leave Ebuka alone! Please.”

When a fan appeared to misunderstand his post, he replied;

No. No. No. That’s not what I meant. If I could do mine for 13 years, why shouldn’t Ebuka?”

JAMB registrar explains why UTME students must register with NIN

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has explained why students who wish to sit for the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), must register with their National Identity Number (NIN).

Specifically, the Registrar and Chief Executive of JAMB, Prof Is-haq Oloyede, on Friday, said the move was for security reasons and to checkmate examination malpractice, noting that the directive was from the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu.

Speaking during a virtual meeting with owners of Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres, service providers, and other stakeholders to kick-start the 2021 UTME registration, Oloyede said, “We don’t even require the name of the candidate, we just want the NIN. We will then do the needful to pull the data of the candidate and the process will go on from there.

It is for security reasons. For us at our small level, it helps us to avoid impersonation, but there is a bigger picture. There is insecurity in the country and we know that many of these problems are there because we have identification problems. We can’t identify every citizen, where he is and what he is doing.”

According to Oloyede, candidates must make use of accessible SIM cards that have never been used for UTME registration.

He said discussions were ongoing with the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami, to grant a conditioned waiver to an estimated 20 per cent of candidates without SIM cards.
