I had to choose between greatness and death – Grammy winner, Burna Boy

Nigerian Grammy Award-winner, Damini Ogulu, also known as Burna Boy, says that at a point in his life, he had to choose between greatness and death, and that was what led to his recent successes on the global stage.

He made the statement in a recent interview with British GQ Magazine.

The ”Ye” crooner said; “Following several collaborations with foreign artistes of African heritage, I just made up my mind that I wanted it all. I wanted to be the greatest. That’s when it hit me really hard that I had to do it. It was that or death.”

Burna Boy also stated that winning a Grammy award broke the mental cycle of people who felt that certain things were unachievable.

He added; “I was not celebrating because of myself. It was almost as if I had broken a mental cycle of our people. Our people had been very mentally oppressed to feel like they could not do certain things, and that certain things were unreachable.”

The self-acclaimed African Giant also noted that he felt he had to think for a whole generation.

“Every day, I realise more that things are bigger than me. I have to think for a lot of people – basically a whole generation – before I think of myself,” he said.

Popular singer, Teniola Apata, aka Teni D’Entertainer, has advised fellow entertainers to invest part of their earnings or go broke in future.

Popular singer, Teniola Apata, aka Teni D’Entertainer, has advised fellow entertainers to invest part of their earnings or go broke in future.

Speaking during an Instagram live session with media personality, Adesope Olajide, she said, “One of the greatest artistes of all time, Micheal Jackson, went broke. All this love people are saying that they love you, enjoy it, but don’t get it twisted. Be smart. Prepare for your future. Save and invest. As we speak, having money in a Nigerian bank is as useless as paper. Naira is going to depreciate and one’s money is going to be useless. So, look for ways to invest and where to invest your money in order to multiply it. Your life (as a celebrity) is not like anybody’s life. You cannot go back to the job market. Even if you don’t care, people would look down on you. As an artiste, one has to prepare. One’s future is very important.

“Artistes have a time frame (to be in the spotlight). Don’t forget that. When it is your time, use it well and prepare for your future. At least, have a house and make sure you have something that is bringing you money. You should not go around begging, so that people would not say, ‘Let’s donate for this person’.”

Teni also recalled that Davido had predicted that she would turn out to be a huge star a long time ago. Explaining why Davido was the only artiste she featured on her debut album, ‘Wondaland’, she said, “Davido is such an amazing guy. He is special. I had known David right from Atlanta, United States of America. I remember that I met him in a studio and he said to me, ‘Go back to Nigeria, you are going to be a huge star’. He motivated me with those words and it was just right for me to do something with him. He was already a star at the time. Imagine Davido telling me, ‘Do your thing. You can actually do this thing’.”

Augustine Omini Obono, a Nigerian national residing in South Africa, has been sentenced to three life terms for sexually violating and exploiting a 12-year-old girl in the Republic of South Africa.

He was sentenced for human trafficking, rape, statutory rape, and the sexual exploitation of a minor girl in the Gauteng High Court in Benoni on Thursday, April 29.

Obono, 44, who has been in custody since 2016 following his arrest, was also slapped with seven years for keeping the victim in a brothel and an additional three years for kidnapping the minor.

According to the police, on 3 September 2016, the minor was at a recreational park in Derdepoort when she met a woman, who asked her to accompany her to a flat in Sunnyside, Pretoria.

The woman told the girl she would meet Obono, who was unknown to the victim at the time. The woman promised the minor that she would be given transport money to go to Mamelodi the following morning.

When they arrived at the flat, the woman handed the minor over to Obono. The minor was subsequently sexually exploited and forced to work as a prostitute.

National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said Obono kept the victim in his flat, against her will, for three months.

Oboni demanded that the child make him money by prostituting herself. When she refused. he assaulted and raped her repeatedly. He allegedly locked her up sometimes without food and supplied her with drugs to get her addicted so he could control her.

During that period, Obono fed the minor drugs and forced her to have sex with between five to six men a day. In December 2016, the victim managed to flee and went to her uncle’s place in Mamelodi,” Mahanjana stated.

“When she arrived, she informed her uncle about her ordeal. The uncle reported the matter to the police. The victim pointed out the flat where she was kept against her will. When police arrived at the flat, they found Obono and arrested him,” Mahanjana said.

The minor is currently undergoing counselling.

Police confirm Baba Ijesha will remain in custody pending legal advice

The Lagos State Police Command says comic Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, will remain in custody pending legal advice.

Specifically, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, made this known while parading suspects at the command’s headquarters on Thursday.

According to him, Baba Ijesha would remain in custody pending the legal advice from the Ministry of Justice, as all the parties involved, including the victim and the accused, were questioned at the police command on Wednesday.

His words: “You don’t do trial on pages of the newspaper. There are two cases involved in the Baba Ijebu case: he was alleged seven years ago to have defiled a girl and the girl is now 14 years. At that time, no complaint was made, but last week, a video went viral where he was arrested for sexual assault.

When a man touches a woman where he is not supposed to, without authority and consent, that is what is called sexual assault. That is exactly what is there. He admitted that he assaulted.

“The case of defilement added to it is still under thorough investigation. Sexual assault is a bailable offence, it is not like rape. For three hours yesterday (Wednesday), they were all with me, I interviewed all of them, one after the other, including the girl that was allegedly assaulted, the mother of the girl, and Baba Ijesha.

“We have compiled the case and sent it to the DPP, Office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lagos State, for legal advice. Based on legal advice, action would be taken, but for now, Baba Ijesha is still in our custody.

Amputee hawker apologizes to Nigerians for lying; accuses her grandma of trying to blackmail her for money

Mary Daniel, the amputee hawker, has apologized to Nigerians for not being completely truthful about her condition.

The 27-year-old single mother received N25 million donations from Nigerians who were touched by claims that she lost her leg in an accident that claimed the life of all passengers, including her parents.

However, it has been claimed that there was no accident and she was amputated “from birth”, a claim she denies. It was also reported that her father is still alive.

Speaking to SaharaReporters, Mary said she made a mistake by claiming her father was dead, but she did so because the man abandoned her.

Mary, however, denied claims that her presence in Oshodi was staged to garner sympathy. According to her, she said she had been hawking for a while to make ends meet.

She explained that she used to hawk in Onitsha, Anambra state, from where she moved to Asaba in Delta state and then to Lagos.

Also, she denied claims that she had been receiving strange calls from the people who staged her story as they want their share of the donations.

While speaking to SaharaReporters, she mentioned that it was her maternal grandmother who had been making the calls to demand for money even after she sent her N200, 000.

She said I’d rather send more money or she will expose me and I will go back to selling pure water. I was shocked and asked what sort of thing is this. She’s my maternal grandmother, she is really old.

My aunties and uncles from my mother’s side are the ones pushing my grandmother into this and if she continues like this, later she will regret it. I have told her to calm down that I will take care of her but she refused. She is busy following her children around, making videos, that’s their business.

“Nigerians should forgive me. People that stay on the streets and in noisy places, they hardly have a settled mind and I said my father is late so Nigerians can help me. I made a big mistake; Nigerians should please forgive me.

“I want to open a supermarket in Lagos. I have always been a pure water hawker. Lagos is not the first place, I started from Onitsha, from there, I sold pure water in Asaba from there I came to Lagos. I don’t beg, even in my condition, I hawk that water so I can survive. That’s the business I have always been doing.

I really appreciate the Lagos state government, Mr Idris, the hotel man that gave me accommodation, that celebrated my birthday. I also appreciate Princess Aderemi, for all the support and everyone that helped. I promise not to fail Nigerians.”

Also speaking, His Royal Highness, Sani Yakubu Ejima, Onu Igala, leader of the Igala people in Lagos and Chairman of all the Kogi Igala traditional rulers in Lagos told SaharaReporters that Mary Daniel was not handed over to the police as some reports had claimed.

According to him, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Civic Engagement, Aderemi Adebowale, handed Daniel over to a committee, including Irede Foundation and to him so they can assist Daniel in setting up a business.
