Tanzanians launch petition asking BET to disqualify Diamond Platnumz from this year’s Awards

A group of Tanzanian nationals have launched an online petition to have countryman, Diamond Platnumz disqualified from the 2021 BET Awards.

The Tanzanian music star was nominated in the best international act category alongside Nigeria’s Wizkid and Burna Boy as well as other African heavyweights.

The petitioners accused Diamond of ‘actively and publicly supporting deceased Magufuli’s regime’, but remaining silent when fellow Tanzanian artistes were imprisoned and abducted in 2017-2018 over video clips deemed obscene by the authorities.

As at press time, over 17,000 people have signed the petition.

Details of the petition read;

”This is a call to BET Awards hosted and produced by Black Entertainment Television (BET) to disqualify Diamond Platnumz

Diamond Platnumz is a world-renowned Tanzania music artist who used his popularity and his talent to whitewash and deodorize the brutal repression of the late dictator John Magufuli and his regime. Diamond is also a close friend and business ally of Paul Makonda the former Governor of Dar -es-Salaam who has openly persecuted and cracked down on LGBTI people. Makonda has also been designated in 2020 by the US State Department for gross violations of human rights including cracking down on freedom of expression and association.

Context:

Tanzania has suffered brutal repression and roll back of democracy since 2016 when (late) President Magufuli ascended into power. His regime curtailed democratic freedoms, basic human rights and Tanzanians witnessed never-before experienced atrocities like enforced disappearances, bodies bound and gagged washing ashore the Indian ocean, mass illegal detention of opposition politicians, critics and businessmen, crackdown on independent media, intimidation of creative people including musicians, actors and comedians. A particularly shocking event has been the brutal gunning down of opposition legislator Tundu Lissu in broad daylight. Lissu survived with 16 bullets in his body to tell his story. He is currently living in exile in Brussels, Belgium.

In 2020, Magufuli ran for re-election under his party Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) . Mr Lissu risked his life and returned to run against Magufuli under his party’s ticket – CHADEMA. The election was marred with irregularities, violence including killing of innocent civilians by forces acting for or on behalf of the regime. In the immediate aftermath of the election, Magufuli and his henchmen arrested the leaders of the opposition party and threatened them with treason charges. Some opposition leaders saw family members killed. Today several opposition leaders live in exile, while hundreds still languish in jail on trumped up charges.

Magufuli was also a rabid COVID19 denier whose repeated refusal to follow internationally accepted guidelines on prevention and treatment of COVID19 resulted in many deaths that remain undocumented to date due to the refusal of the government to publish any figures related to COVID19 since May 2020.

Diamond Platnumz’s role:

In 2016, Diamond made Paul Makonda the Patron of his music label and media company called Wasafi. Makonda has used the Wasafi Festival for publicity and to sanitize his image. Also throughout the increased level of repression when fellow artists were imprisoned and abducted Diamond remained silent. In 2017, he deliberately released a single called “Acha Nikae Kimya” (Let me remain quiet) as a response to the increasing demand from the public to speak up and condemn the crackdowns. Diamond to-date has not condemned or spoken up on any of the atrocities committed.

Diamond Platnumz is a self-avowed CCM party member and was the lead musician for the CCM campaign in 2015 and 2020. In 2020 despite a huge outcry locally and internationally against Magufuli and his regime, Diamond endorsed this brutal dictator, dedicated a song to him (“Magufuli Baba Lao”) and several times took to stage with him during campaign. In October 2020 during the #EndSARS protest in Nigeria, Diamond tweeted solidarity with Nigeria but deliberately chose to remain quiet on the atrocities happening in Tanzania during the elections.

After the BET Awards 2021 nomination for best international act, Diamond took to the media and spoke disparagingly of activists, then paid a visit to his party’s headquarters CCM whereby his nomination was hailed as some sort of achievement for the party and the nation.

Why Diamond should be disqualified:

Diamond Platnumz has failed to show basic concern and publicly express any solidarity with his fellow artists like Roma Mkatoliki, Nay wa Mitego and Idris Sultan who suffered at the hand of the dictator Magufuli.
Diamond Platnumz chose to protect and expand his personal and business interest by praising and using his star power to soften the image of a brutal dictator and his collaborators.

BET awards have been always held in high esteem by many Africans for its recognition of talent of exemplary artists. The international act which was established in 2018 has consistently gone to artists who have been very conscientious and stood up for justice for African lives. Both Davido (2018) and Burna Boy (2019 and 2020) have been in the frontline at the #EndSARS protests using their star power and fame to shed light on injustice and even protect civilians from police brutality. Diamond Platnumz is a selfish, greedy opportunist and an apologist of a repressive regime who chose to deliberately turn a blind eye to atrocities and associate, praise and collaborate with renowned human rights violators like Paul Makonda and John Magufuli.

We believe that once BET independently verifies these facts, it will be clear that Diamond Platnumz does NOT deserve ANY recognition in these prestigious awards.”

It can’t get up – Pastor cries out for help after side chic ‘locked’ his manhood

A South African Pastor has cried out for help over the numbness of his manhood, accusing his side chick of being responsible.

According to the man, his mistress ‘locked his manhood’ for breaking up with her.

The 47-year-old Pastor told Daily Sun that the lady who had been asking when he will divorce his wife, didn’t take the break-up very well when he first called off their romantic relationship in March.

He said the relationship continued but it was no longer as much fun. The cleric said when he confronted her about it, she gave him an attitude and said she doesn’t have a reason to respect an unfaithful man.

The Pastor from Glenvista in Johannesburg, said; “Sometimes when I asked to see her, she’d tell me she’s with another man

“I realised this one was trouble so I ended the relationship. That didn’t go well.

“She told me I’ll regret the day I met her and she’d destroy my marriage in any way she could.”

He further revealed that he noticed that he had become impotent after trying to have sex with his wife in April. It continued even after he visited a urologist who gave him some pills and advised him to eat healthy.

The Pastor said; “Last month, I tried again but the same thing happened. My heart dropped as my 4-5 hanged its head.

“I really regret what I did to my wife. I want my life back

“When I asked her what she did, she told me I messed with the wrong woman and ended the call.”

He said when he tried calling her back, she didn’t answer. Asked if he’s visited a sangoma (native doctor), he said he’s a man of God and doesn’t believe in those practices.

I know the nyatsi has something to do with this, but I don’t think I want to take that route to fix my problem.”

Speaking to Daily Sun via telephone, the 28-year-old side chick said she assumed the pastor dated her because he loved her and planned to divorce his wife.

Asked if she indeed locked his penis, she reportedly laughed and then said he will learn to stop toying with women’s feelings before ending the call.

She said; “He’s a man of God and I didn’t think he was just using me for a poke. I thought what we had was real.”

However a urologist, Dr Kenneth Mulongo said most of these cases are caused by a combination of physical and emotional problems. He advised the pastor to come see him.

Mulongo said; “Just about any medical condition that affects your nerves or blood vessels could hurt your ability to have an erection.”

A native doctor, Joseph Dungamanzi confirmed the man’s penis was locked and also said nothing will work until he goes for a cleansing.

Twitter should have office in Nigeria to resolve issues – Governor Sanwo-Olu

Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu of Lagos State Governor, says if Twitter had an office in Nigeria, resolving the current ban would have been easier.

Sanwo-olu made the suggestion in an interview with Arise TV on Monday, June 7, 2021.

He noted that he cannot categorically say if the federal government’s action against Twitter is wrong or right because he does not have the same prognosis as the president and commander-in-chief.

The governor also said that the federal government had only suspended Twitter operations in Nigeria, rather than out rightly banning it.

He further suggested that Twitter and the government should come together to resolve the issues rather than allow it to continue to degenerate to the detriment of the economy.

“On both sides, there are issues that can be resolved between Twitter and the Government and I think what they’ve done is not a ban but a suspension like they said, so in the period of suspension let us sit down

“So in the period of suspension, let’s sit down, if we have 40 million users of micro-blogging user and they chose to take their investment to country with five million users, it speaks to the reason why we also need to have that conversation with them so that perhaps if they have an office here things would have been done along quicker and better,” he said.

On June 4, the Nigerian government issued a statement suspending operations of Twitter after the microblogging site deleted President Muhammadu Buhari’s ‘civil war’ tweet.

In his words; ”When A Man uses peit, wire, blow, knife, slap, or any domestic violent means on his wife, He is worthy to be awarded a duplex at Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital or He Can Just Go there Himself and tell them to Admit Him there until He is okay.

And A Wife That Beats Her Husband is DEAD and Rotten while she is Living!”

”No retreat No surrender” – Nigerians continue tweeting despite government’s prosecution order

Nigerians have continued to tweet in defiance to the Muhammadu Buhari-led government’s order to arrest and prosecute anyone who still uses Twitter in Nigeria.

The Federal Government on Friday banned Twitter, blocking citizen’s access to the micro-blogging platform, after Twitter deleted a controversial tweet of President Buhari referencing the civil war.

On Saturday, Attorney General and minister of justice, Abubakar Malami, ordered the arrest and prosecution of any Nigerian seen using Twitter. But the threat has not deterred Nigerians from tweeting and engaging on the micro-blogging site.

General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, took to Twitter shortly after Malami ordered the arrest and prosecution of whoever uses Twitter in Nigeria.

No retreat. No Surrender”, Adeboye tweeted, sharing a video of his message.

No Retreat No Surrender #WeMove #ForJesus — Pastor Adeboye (@PastorEAAdeboye) June 5, 2021

Like Mr Adeboye, the senior pastor of Omega Fire Ministry, Apostle Johnson Suleman, took to his Twitter page to question how it is possible to arrest people for using Twitter without monitoring them on the same platform.

“You want to arrest anyone still using Twitter?.

How did you access them if you are not secretly doing same? A deaf and dumb puts on ear-piece.!!” — Apst Johnson Suleman (@APOSTLESULEMAN) June 5, 2021.

Demola Olarenwaju said the order would only give security agencies to harrass and extort young Nigerians.

”Malami’s order of prosecution for tweeting is a declaration of war on young people by pushing them into the trap of security agencies of state who now have one more illegal reason to extort, detain, harass or even kill anyone for the alleged ‘crime’ of using Twitter.” — Demola Olarewaju (@DemolaRewaju) June 5, 2021.

Deji Adeyanju, an activist, questioned the legality of Mr Malami’s order.

”Dear Nigerians,

Don’t allow them to bully you. The goal is to bully you with their illiteracy. Nobody can arrest you for using Twitter. I hereby, volunteer myself for Malami’s experiment. Which police station should I report to for using Twitter?’‘ — Comrade Deji Adeyanju (@adeyanjudeji) June 5, 2021.

Segun Awosanya, another activist said;

”Malami and his fellow travelers are arrogating powers that they don’t have unto themselves because of the dearth of leadership and gap in responsibility of the state. As far as they are concerned they wield the powers of all arms of Govt combined at the expense of us all.” — SEGA L’éveilleu (@segalink) June 5, 2021.

Catholic Church bans Father Mbaka from commenting on partisan politics

The Catholic church has banned Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministries Enugu, Rev. Fr Ejike Mbaka, from commenting on partisan politics.

In a letter to Mbaka dated June 3, Bishop of Enugu diocese, Callistus Onaga, also converted the adoration ministry to chaplaincy.

Unlike in the past where Mbaka solely oversees the activities of the ministry as its spiritual director, making it chaplaincy brings it under the control of the Enugu diocese and gives the bishop the power to appoint a chaplain to oversee its operations.

Although the bishop said Mbaka still leads the chaplaincy, he added that he (bishop) can appoint any ministerial officer “to assist the chaplains to oversee the pastoral activities of the ministry.”

There shall be no partisan politics either by way of active engagement or by prophetic naming of candidates for position of power,” he said.

Nigerians resort to using VPN as service providers block Twitter

Nigerians on social media have embraced the use of a Virtual Private Network (VPN) following the suspension of the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, by the Nigerian Government.

VPN, according to kapersky.com, is a connection that allows users to establish a protected network connection when using public networks. It encrypts internet traffic and disguises the user’s online identity. This makes it more difficult for third parties to track users’ activities online and steal data.

On Friday, Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension in a statement citing the “persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.

Shortly after the federal government announced that Twitter has been suspended, virtual private network (VPN) started to dominate discussions on social media platforms.
