Nigerian media gave Burna Boy credits for records I set – Seun Kuti

Grammy-nominated Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, has lamented that Burna Boy is erroneously being credited for records set by him and others in the Nigerian music industry.

He recalled that Burna Boy was widely reported as the first artiste to play in Coachella in 2020 despite his (Kuti’s) performance at the festival in 2012.

The controversial singer stated that despite earning another Grammy nomination for his contributions to Janelle Monae’s ‘Age of Pleasure,’ which was nominated in the Album of the Year category at the 2024 Grammys, the media didn’t mention him among the Nigerian artists nominated for the 66th Grammys.

“My brother [Femi Kuti] has been nominated at the Grammys multiple times. They’ve nominated me, I was also nominated in the last edition. It was only my name that they [Nigerian media] didn’t mention among the Nigerian artists who were nominated for the 66th Grammys. That’s what they do every time as if I’m from Togo.

“That’s how they said Burna boy was the first Nigerian artiste to play in Coachella in 2020 where me I’ve played in 2012 as if I’m from Togo,” he lamented.

Howard University revokes Diddy’s honorary degree over sexual assault allegations

Howard University has revoked the honorary degree conferred on music mogul Sean Combs, popularly known as Diddy, over sexual assault allegations.

A spokesperson for the university informed Fox on Friday that the honorary degree, given to Diddy in 2014, has been returned and unanimously accepted by the Howard University Board of Trustees.

This acceptance revokes all honours and privileges associated with the degree.

Accordingly, the Board has directed that his name be removed from all documents listing honorary degree recipients of Howard University.

Diddy is facing scrutiny after a video emerged showing him apparently assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, in a hotel hallway in 2016. The recently obtained video from eight years ago, exclusively obtained by CNN, showed Diddy chasing after Ventura while wearing only socks and a towel. This video gave credence to Ventura’s November lawsuit against the music mogul.

In May, the rapper apologised, describing his actions as “inexcusable,” but he did not mention Ventura by name. He said, “It’s so difficult to reflect on the darkest times in your life, but sometimes you got to do that. I was f—ed up – I hit rock bottom – but I make no excuses. My behaviour in that video is inexcusable. I take full responsibility for my actions in that video.”

Mixed reactions trail Mohbad’s autopsy result

Diverse reactions have continued to trail the result of the autopsy conducted on singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

The autopsy result which surfaced on the Internet on Friday, May 7, 2024, revealed that although there was no conclusive proof of the cause of the late singer’s death, he appeared to have died from a reaction to drugs.

The report of the autopsy conducted at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital revealed that samples of Mohbad’s gastric content, blood, bone marrow, liver, kidney, and lungs were received for a complete toxicology examination.

The report read, “It is noteworthy that the body neither had an autopsy nor embalmed before interment on the second day. Following the Order for Exhumation, the body was exhumed on 21/09/2023 (eight days after the burial).

“Autopsy revealed moderate to marked decomposition of organs. Aside from the superficial injury on the right forearm, no significant gross finding could be attributed to death.

“Against this background, samples were taken for toxicology. This was to determine if there was any anaphylactic reaction, substance abuse, overdose or common household poisoning. Toxicology revealed positive findings of Diphenhydramine, an anti-histamine. However, this concentration was not in a fatal or lethal range. The other analytics were unremarkable.

“Unfortunately, this was prevented or made impossible by the burial of the deceased on the second day. In the light of the preceding, the cause of death could not be ascertained. However, the possibility of a fatal anaphylactic shock (drug reaction) could be considered given the absence of any significant post-mortem and toxicology findings.”

However, the report has stirred mixed reactions, as some of the late singer’s fans argued that the result was released late. In contrast, others stated that his father’s action of burying him immediately hurt the autopsy result.

A fan, augustinaariemi, commented, “My own is that Baba Bohbad didn’t do well by burying that boy like that. He is one of the reasons that boy has not got justice.”

Leeeymarrrrh wrote, “The father is part of the people that did not allow this guy (Mohbad) to get justice.”

Tribunal fines DSTV, GOTV N150m, orders one-month free subscriptions

The Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal on Friday fined Multichoice Nigeria, the owners of DSTV and GoTv services, the sum of N150 million for disobeying its orders, which restrained the pay-TV company from increasing its monthly subscription pending the determination of the suit brought before it.

The tribunal also ordered the pay-TV company to provide its Nigerian customers with a one-month free subscription to its DStv and GOtv packages.

Recall that the tribunal had previously ordered Multichoice not to increase its subscription fees without proper notice, following a lawsuit filed by an Abuja-based lawyer, Festus Onifade, who said the 8-day notice given for the price increase was inadequate.

Onifade then proceeded to file contempt charges against Multichoice after it disobeyed court orders and proceeded with its price hike as announced via email to its customers.

The contempt charges which were filed on May 7 were instituted against the Manager of the Abuja branch of Multi-Choice Nigeria Ltd, Mr Mohammed Sani.

The contempt was hinged on the company’s disobedience to the court order and Onifade, sought an order of the tribunal, directing MultiChoice to pay the sum of N1 billion “or any amount the tribunal deemed fit appropriate in this circumstance for the company’s deliberate actions in disobeying, contravening, and failing to comply with the interim order” granted on April 29.

In a Notice of Consequence of Disobedience to Order of Court, Form 48, marked: CCPT/OP/02/2024 dated and filed on May 7, the notice, warned Sani against disregarding the tribunal order.

“Take notice that unless you obey the under-listed order of the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal, Abuja, given on the 29th day of April 2024, thus: “An order restraining the 1st defendant/respondent either by itself, agents, representatives, officers or privies, howsoever described from carrying out the impending increase in tariffs and cost of its products and services intended to take effect from 1st May 2024, until the hearing and determination of the motion on notice already filed before this tribunal”.

Multichoice, on its part, argued that previous rulings had settled price regulation issues.

Onifade insisted the length of notice was inadequate and more pressing than the price hike itself, prompting the tribunal to affirm its jurisdiction and ruling against Multichoice.

The court fixed July 3 for a hearing of the substantive suit of the plaintiff.

WW2 veteran aged 102 dies on way to D-Day event

A World War Two US Navy veteran travelling to France for an event marking the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings has died, a veteran organisation has confirmed.
Robert “Al” Persichitti from Rochester, New York, was airlifted to a hospital in Germany on 30 May after suffering a medical emergency aboard a ship heading to Europe.

He died the following day, aged 102.

Remembered as a “great, humble man,” Mr Persichitti was involved in the allied operation in Japan.

Honor Flight – a veteran organisation Mr Persichitti belonged to – confirmed his death on social media and said he had “served his country bravely without hesitation”.

The non-profit helps transport former US servicemen to the memorials of the respective wars they fought in.

The 102-year-old was selected to attend the event in Normandy by the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, which paid for and organised the trip, a local affiliate of CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, reported.

“I’m really excited to be going”, he told broadcaster WROC-TV a day before he set off.

His cardiologist had encouraged him to travel, he added.
Al DeCarlo, who served alongside Mr Persichitti in Japan, was also on the trip. He told local media in Rochester that his friend did not die alone.

“The doctor was with him… he was at peace and he was comfortable,” he said, according to ABC news agency affiliate, WHAM-TV.

“She put his favourite singer, Frank Sinatra, on her phone and he peacefully left us.”

The pair served in Iwo Jiwa together, a Japanese island the US captured from the country’s imperial army in 1945.

Mr Persichitti’s friend of 46 years, Pastor William Leone, told WHAM-TV “he had a real zest for living” and would visit children in local schools to talk to about his experiences.

The veteran was also a former teacher. In April, students at a local school helped organise a birthday celebration in his honour.

In 2020, he was named an honouree of New York State Senate’s Veteran Hall of Fame by the then Senator Rich Funke.
His local chapter of Honor Flight in Rochester said they will miss him.
