Citing witnesses the BBC reported that the driver of the vehicle exited the car and began firing a weapon after the crash.

City officials confirmed the incident happened at the intersection of Bourbon and Canal Streets during New Year’s Eve celebrations, a period when large crowds typically gather in the French Quarter.

Footage from the scene showed police officers surrounding a cordoned-off area, while emergency services responded to the situation.

The injured have been taken to hospital, and authorities say that public safety personnel remain at the scene.

The event followed a week after a car rammed into a German Christmas market, killing five and injuring over 200 persons.
